Chapter 7: The First Rescue and Remembrance
With Classic Sonic and Tails dealing with Metal Sonic in Stardust Speedway, the older and modern Sonic returned through the shimmering portal of the Chemical Plant hub and stepped back into White Space. The hedgehog turned and looked at the plant, now seeing its color and life restored, thanks to the Blue Blur's speed and actions in that past adventure.
"I'm glad to see that this hub is back alive," Sonic remarked, looking with pride. "But, I won't miss that purple water anytime soon!"
Sonic's attention then turned to the statue of Tails nearby, and he walked up to it. As he approached, he could see the colorless and lifeless statue beginning to shimmer with a glimmering light. The transformation started at Tails's shoes, the light slowly rising, restoring color and life to the two-tailed fox. Inch by inch, the vibrant hues of Tails's fur and attire returned, the light climbing up his legs, torso, and finally reaching his face.
As the light completed its journey, Tails blinked twice, feeling the freedom to move again. The fox looked around in bewilderment, then at his two hands, and finally placed one of his hands on his chest, tilting his head with a smile.
"Tails!" Sonic said, his voice filled with happiness and relief at seeing his friend restored to normal.
Tails lifted his head and turned to Sonic, a big smile spreading across his face.
"Thanks, Sonic," he remarked, his tone filled with gratitude but tinged with the lingering fear of his recent ordeal. "I thought I was gone for good! It was like floating around in a black limbo..."
The two-tailed fox hugged himself tightly, his body trembling slightly as he recounted the experience.
"I'm going to have nightmares for weeks..." he added, his voice shaking.
Sonic stepped closer, placing a reassuring hand on Tails's shoulder.
"You're safe now, buddy," he said gently.
Tails felt the comfort of Sonic's words and the reassurance from his gesture. As the hedgehog removed his hand from his shoulder, the two tailed fox continued to look around White Space, his genius mind trying to piece together everything around him.
"Where are we anyway?" Tails asked, gesturing as he spoke. "This whole place looks like something sucked all the life and colour of it."
"You could say that," Sonic replied, folding his arms, watching Tails start to move around and look at the hub world behind them.
"Is that... the Chemical Plant?" Tails muttered, examining the landscape of the hub world closely.
"It sure is," Sonic affirmed, unfolding his arms and walking to Tails's side.
"Oh man, every time I think of this place...the memories of the purple water come back," Tails muttered. "It makes me very nervous just thinking about it."
"Me too, little buddy," Sonic replied, agreeing with the fox. "I had to go into this past adventure to save you, and bring it back to life."
"So, this was drained of color and life also?" Tails asked, trying to understand what was going on.
"Yeah," Sonic confirmed, his expression serious. "When I first got here, it was just as colorless and lifeless as the rest of this place. It's all Terios's doing."
"Terios..." Tails muttered, piecing it together. "Is that the indigo hedgehog who crashed your party?"
"Yeah, that's the one," Sonic replied, his tone laced with frustration. "He's part of this group called the 'Organization'."
"The Organization?" Tails repeated, curiosity piqued.
"Yeah, they're like a shadowy group with some seriously bad intentions," Sonic replied, his expression serious. "I don't know all the details yet, but from what I can tell, they're bad news.
"So, what exactly is Terios doing?" Tails replied, nodding and taking in the situation.
"He's messing with the past, changing events, and creating false realities," Sonic explained. "He's using his powers to drain the life and color out of these places, turning them into voids. Our memories, our adventures, everything's being twisted and messed up."
Tails's eyes widened in realization, "So, Terios is meddling with time and space, distorting our past adventures?" the fox asked.
"Exactly," Sonic nodded. "And we need to restore each place to its original state to fix things. But there's more to it. There's a mysterious man with red bandages around his face. He's been helping me, but he seems to have disappeared for now."
Sonic glanced around, his green eyes scanning the whiteness of the void and the other hub worlds nearby that still needed saving. The absence of the mysterious man was noticeable, leaving Sonic feeling a bit uneasy.
Tails's mind raced with thoughts and theories.
"So, this man with the red bandages... he's not part of the Organization, right?" he questioned.
"No," Sonic replied, shaking his head. "He seems to be against them, but I don't know his full story yet. He knows a lot about what's going on."
Tails pondered for a moment, using his intellect to take in what Sonic was saying and trying to process the situation. The fox always seemed to have a hypothesis when something didn't make sense or add up.
"I have a theory," Tails remarked, his eyes lighting up with a spark of insight.
"What you got, buddy?" Sonic asked, his curiosity piqued.
Tails looked thoughtful as he began to explain, "If Terios is manipulating time and space, creating distortions in our past adventures, then there must be a pattern to his actions. These distortions aren't random. They follow some kind of logic, some kind of plan."
Sonic nodded, encouraging Tails to continue.
"Go on," the hedgehog said.
Tails continued, his voice filled with conviction, "I need more evidence to confirm this, but what if the distortions are linked to key events in our past? Moments that are crucial to our history and our growth. Terios might be targeting these events to destabilise us and weaken our resolve."
Sonic's eyes widened as he considered the possibility.
"So, you're saying that by figuring out which events he's targeting, we can predict his next move and stop him?"
"Exactly," Tails replied. "But we need more information. We need to understand the exact nature of these distortions and how they're affecting the timeline. If we can identify the pattern, we can use it to our advantage."
Sonic nodded, appreciating Tails's quick thinking.
"Makes sense. We need to keep our eyes open and gather as much information as we can."
Tails's eyes gleamed with determination as he replied, "And we should also look for clues left behind by this mysterious man with the red bandages. If he knows a lot about what's going on, he might have left hints or messages for us to find."
"Right," Sonic agreed. "We need to be on the lookout for anything that can help us understand Terios's plan and how to counter it."
Tails looked around the White Space, his mind racing with possibilities. However, before either could reply, Sonic started to feel a small headache coming on. The pain made the hedgehog place his gloved hand on his head, his facial expressions showing he was feeling a slight discomfort. Tails, having looked around the void, turned to see his friend's expression.
"Sonic, are you okay?" Tails asked, concern deep in his tone.
"I'm... I'm remembering something," Sonic muttered, his voice strained.
Tails looked surprised, surely a memory shouldn't cause this much pain. "What do you see?" Tails inquired, eager to know what Sonic was experiencing.
"It's like, one of those blurred memories is becoming clearer," Sonic affirmed, still gripping his head.
Just then, Tails began to feel a slight pain also. It was as if the pain was connected. He winced, holding his head.
"Sonic!" Tails exclaimed, his voice filled with alarm. "I'm seeing the gap in my memory returning too!"
The friends continued to hold their heads as their blurred memories started to piece together. Fragments of past events flashed through their minds, bringing both clarity and confusion.
Returning Memory
The memory unfolded in their minds, showing the night they ended up in Traverse Town after Mobius was consumed by the Heartless. Sonic and Tails stood in the Third District with Leon and Yuffie, their surroundings bathed in the dim glow of street lamps. Three other figures, initially blurred, began to become clearer in their vision.
Sonic and Tails focused on the three figures, their details gradually coming into sharp relief. The first figure was a boy with brown spiky hair, dressed in a red jumpsuit with a long zipper running through the middle, ending in puffy shorts. He wore a crown-chain on his left side and a loosely worn blue belt. Over his jumpsuit, the boy wore a black hoodie, blue on the inside and black on the outside, with white sleeves ending in grey edging. White gloves adorned his hands, and around his neck hung a crown pendant. His shoes were mainly yellow and black with belt-straps holding them closed, the lower portions grey and ending with a small triangular patch of blue.
The second figure was a duck, his attire consisting of a blue hat and matching vest with yellow accents, each with a buckle and zipper. He also wore a short blue cape and a pair of gold bangles.
The third figure, who looked like a dog, wore a green turtleneck sweater, a black vest, baggy yellow pants, and a yellow hat with a pair of red goggles. His shoes were metal-toed.
The five of them were in discussion after Sonic and these three mysterious allies had defeated the Guard Armor. The vivid details of their clothing and appearance came flooding back, making the memory feel as real as the present moment.
However, as quickly as the memory had sharpened, it began to fade away in a white light. The edges of the scene blurred and softened, the colors bleeding into the whiteness. Sonic and Tails reached out as if to hold onto the memory, but it slipped away, dissolving into the void.
However, as quickly as the memory had sharpened, it began to fade away in a white light. The edges of the scene blurred and softened, the colors bleeding into the whiteness. Sonic and Tails reached out as if to hold onto the memory, but it slipped away, dissolving into the void. They found themselves back in White Space, surrounded by the vast emptiness, more questions swirling in their minds than answers.
"Those three guys with us..." Sonic pondered, his mind deep in thought.
"I saw them too, Sonic. But for the life of me, I can't remember their names?" Tails wondered aloud, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Sonic shook his head, trying to grasp the slipping details.
"I remember they helped me take on that Guard Armor in Traverse Town, but everything else is a blur."
Tails pondered, his eyes darting around the blank expanse.
"If we can save more hubs and restore the adventures from our past, maybe the memories will become clearer."
Sonic nodded, his determination unwavering, "Sounds like a good plan. Let's move on to the next one."
The two scanned the expanse of White Space, searching for the next hub. Tails pointed out one nearby, his eyes lighting up with recognition.
"Hey, that one looks familiar," the fox commented.
Sonic followed Tails's gaze and nodded, a hint of curiosity and excitement in his eyes.
"Come on, let's check it out!" the hedgehog said.
They moved towards the new hub, their footsteps echoing in the eerie silence of White Space. The faint outline of another adventure began to materialise, shrouded in a mysterious aura. The details of the new hub slowly emerged, hinting at another piece of their shared past that needed uncovering.
MEANWHILE
Axel and Larxene entered a sleek and technologically advanced research facility. The walls were lined with glowing screens displaying streams of data, and the air buzzed with an electric hum. At the center of the room stood a hooded member of the Organization, his fingers dancing over the keys of a console, inputting complex data.
Axel and Larxene approached, their expressions a mix of impatience and determination.
"Hey, we need a word," Axel called out, his usual laid-back demeanor tinged with urgency.
The hooded man barely glanced up from his work.
"Leave. I'm busy," he said curtly.
Larxene's temper flared, and she stepped forward, her eyes flashing.
"This is a warning. Wind in Terios. We have our tasks to stop Sora, not to deal with Terios's attitude."
The man turned slowly, his hood casting a shadow over his face. He scoffed, his voice dripping with disdain.
"Are you really making demands, Larxene?"
Axel stepped in, trying to diffuse the tension with his usual charm.
"You are his creator, after all..." he remarked.
The hooded man smirked beneath his hood as he replied.
"All is in order," he said, dismissively.
Axel crossed his arms, a smirk playing on his lips.
"It's hardly been a great start for your boy, Doctor."
The hooded man, the Doctor, shook his head as he replied.
"A bumpy start, perhaps, but haven't you ever heard the phrase, 'Great oaks from little acorns grow'?"
"Oh, one for philosophy, I see," Axel remarked sarcastically.
"Mock me, Axel, but remember, every grand design starts with small steps," the Doctor retorted, his tone icy and dismissive.
Larxene's patience snapped as she couldn't bear to listen to this conversation anymore.
"Just mind your own business dealing with Sonic," she remarked, her patience thin.
Just then, a new figure materialised from the darkness, his presence imposing and cold. Axel's eyes widened slightly, and he raised an eyebrow.
"Oh look, it's Vexen!" Axel remarked with mock cheerfulness.
Vexen ignored Axel's sarcasm, his icy gaze fixed on the Doctor. Vexen, tall and imposing with long blond hair and sharp, piercing eyes, was dressed in the same black coat as the other Organization members, but his demeanor was more severe, his intellect evident in his every move.
"Doctor, we must discuss the data for the program you are working on," Vexen said, his voice carrying a weight of urgency and importance.
The Doctor nodded, turning away from Axel and Larxene. His attention now fully on Vexen.
"Indeed. But more data is required," he said cryptically, his words hanging in the air.
Larxene's patience wore thin, and she scowled at being dismissed so easily.
"Rude much?" she muttered, her eyes narrowing at the Doctor.
The Doctor turned his head slightly, a smirk playing on his lips from under his hood.
"If you have time to complain, perhaps you should be focusing on your own tasks. Your antics are hardly beneficial to our goals."
Axel chuckled, but his eyes were serious.
"Well, Doc, you might want to remember that we all have a part to play. Terios's actions are causing ripples we have to deal with."
Vexen stepped forward, his expression stern.
"Enough. Both of you should leave. The Doctor and I have critical matters to attend to."
Larxene opened her mouth to retort, but Axel placed a hand on her shoulder, guiding her towards the exit.
"Let's go, Larxene. We've got our own missions to worry about."
As they left, Larxene shot a final glare at The Doctor and Vexen. Once the door closed behind them, the tension in the room eased slightly.
Vexen turned his gaze to his fellow scientist, his eyes reflecting a mixture of impatience and curiosity.
"The program must be flawless. Any deviation could compromise everything."
The Doctor nodded, his focus back on the console.
"Understood. I will ensure the data is perfect. Our plans hinge on its success."
Vexen watched as The Doctor resumed his work, his mind already calculating the next steps. The stakes were high, and failure was not an option. Together, they delved into the complexities of the data, their combined intellects pushing the boundaries of their dark ambitions.
WHITE SPACE
Sonic and Tails walked over to the next colourless and lifeless hub, As they approached, it became clear that this was indeed a past adventure, one from their early days. The familiar architecture and floating islands gave it away immediately.
"Hey, this is the Sky Sanctuary," Sonic remarked, nodding as he took in the sight before them.
The hub was a majestic ruin suspended high above the clouds, but unlike their memories, it was now colorless and lifeless. The once vibrant architecture and floating islands were drained of their golden glow, replaced with a dull hue. White marble pillars stood tall, though many were cracked and weathered by time, their intricate carvings barely visible. Platforms that once shimmered with life now floated in the air, connected by crumbling pathways and precarious jumps. The remnants of ancient machinery were scattered around, their purposes long forgotten, adding to the mysterious allure of the place. The sky, instead of a vibrant blue, was a bleak, overcast expanse with clouds drifting lazily below the floating islands.
As Sonic and Tails continued to look around the hub, Sonic's gaze fell upon a solid statue nearby. It was Knuckles, frozen in mid-action, his fists raised as if he were ready to fight. The statue was completely devoid of color and life, making it look like a solemn monument.
"Look, it's Knuckles!" Sonic pointed out, his voice tinged with concern.
Tails looked at the statue, his eyes wide with fascination.
"So I was like this?" he asked, marveling at the lifelike yet lifeless figure.
"Yeah," Sonic confirmed. "You were."
Tails examined the surroundings, his curiosity piqued by the intricate details of the Sky Sanctuary.
"This place is incredible. The architecture, the atmosphere... It's amazing, even without the colour."
"Yeah," Sonic agreed, his eyes scanning the lifeless landscape. "But seeing it like this... it's eerie. Remember when we first came here?"
Tails nodded, a small smile playing on his lips.
"Yeah, I remember. We were chasing after Eggman, and Knuckles was trying to stop us, thinking we were after the Master Emerald."
Sonic chuckled, the memory bringing a brief warmth to the otherwise cold surroundings.
"He really gave us a run for our money. But we teamed up in the end and took down Eggman together. This place was so full of life back then."
"Now it looks like all the energy has been sucked out of it," Tails said, a hint of sadness in his voice as he gazed at the colorless ruins.
"We'll bring it back, Tails," Sonic remarked, his confidence shining through. "I'll restore the color and life to this place, just like I did with the Chemical Plant."
Tails smiled, nodding in agreement.
"Right. And I'll stay back and analyse this place, maybe that man with the red bandages will return, and I can introduce myself properly," the fox replied.
"Good idea," Sonic retorted, turning back to the lifeless statue of Knuckles. "I better go in and save this place and old Knucklehead."
Tails examined the statue more closely, his eyes filled with curiosity.
"It's fascinating, really. Seeing Knuckles like this... it's almost like he's frozen in time, trying to fight back."
"Yeah," Sonic said with a determined nod. "I'll handle this, Tails. You keep an eye out here."
"Be careful, Sonic," Tails said, his voice filled with concern. "I'll be here when you get back."
With a final nod from Tails, Sonic stepped into the portal, feeling the familiar rush of energy as he was transported into the Sky Sanctuary.
"Hang in there, Knuckles," Sonic muttered to himself, his determination hardening. "I'll bring you back, and this place too."
Back in White Space, Tails examined the lifeless hub, his mind racing with possibilities. He studied the intricate carvings on the pillars, the remnants of ancient machinery, and the eerie stillness that had settled over the sanctuary. He knew that understanding the distortions and the energy drain was key to restoring the hubs.
"I wonder what kind of data I can gather here," Tails mused aloud. "Maybe there's something hidden in these ruins that can give us a clue about Terios's plans."
As he continued his analysis, Tails kept an eye out for the mysterious man with the red bandages, hoping for an opportunity to learn more about their enigmatic ally. The path ahead was uncertain, but with Sonic's determination and Tails's intellect, they were ready to face whatever challenges lay in wait.
ELSEWHERE
Meanwhile, in Naminé's room, Larxene paced back and forth, her irritation palpable. The sterile, white room was filled with her agitated energy, contrasting sharply with the calm, focused atmosphere created by Naminé's drawing. Axel leaned casually against a nearby wall, his arms crossed and a smirk on his face.
"Who does he think he is?!" Larxene fumed, her voice dripping with venom. "That doctor thinks he's so important, bossing us around like that."
Axel chuckled, shaking his head.
"You still salty about it, Larxene?"
"Salty?" Larxene snapped, turning to glare at Axel. "If Terios did his job properly to begin with, he wouldn't be hogging the White Space area. It's throwing everything off!"
Naminé, sitting quietly, continued to draw, but her hands trembled slightly. She glanced nervously at the two, the tension in the room making her uneasy. Axel shrugged, unfazed by Larxene's outburst.
"Would have been nice to use that space instead of the levels of this castle. But we've got our agenda to stick to," Axel said.
Larxene's eyes narrowed as she replied, "Our agenda? Maybe I should just end Terios's schemes in their tracks and take down Sonic myself."
"Yeah, good luck with that. And what exactly is that going to do for us?" Axel questioned.
Larxene's fists clenched, electricity crackling around her fingers.
"It would get that annoying hedgehog out of the way, for one!" she moaned.
"And leave us with a bigger mess to clean up," Axel retorted, his tone mocking but his eyes serious. "We need Terios for a reason. Remember, it's all part of the plan."
Naminé's pencil hovered over the paper, her heart pounding. She knew better than to intervene, but the tension between Larxene and Axel was suffocating.
Larxene scoffed, turning away from Axel and crossing her arms.
"I just don't see why we have to rely on that unstable creation."
Axel pushed off the wall, walking over to Larxene.
"Look, I get it. Terios is a wild card. But we need him to keep Sonic and his pals busy while we focus on the real goal."
Larxene glared at Axel, her anger simmering just below the surface.
"And what if he fails? What if Sonic gets through?"
Axel's expression softened slightly, though his tone remained confident.
"Then we adapt. But for now, we stick to the plan. Terios is our best bet to keep them distracted."
Naminé's eyes flicked between the two, her anxiety growing. She knew how crucial their roles were in the larger scheme, but the infighting was dangerous.
"Whatever," Larxene scoffed, her voice dripping with disdain.
She gave one last glare at Axel before disappearing into a corridor of darkness, leaving Axel and Naminé alone in the room.
Axel shook his head, muttering under his breath, "Always gotta be dramatic, huh?"
He glanced over at Naminé, who was trying to focus on her drawing but was clearly unsettled. Axel walked over to her, his usual nonchalant demeanor replaced with a rare moment of concern.
"Don't let her get to you, Naminé," he said, his tone softer. "She's all bark, no bite. Well, mostly."
Naminé looked up from her drawing, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and curiosity.
"Is... is everything really going according to your plans?"
Axel sighed, leaning on the edge of the desk.
"As much as it ever does around here. Terios is a wild card, sure, but the Organization needs him. And we need you too. What you're doing is important."
Naminé nodded slowly, trying to absorb Axel's reassurance.
"I just... I worry that things are getting out of control."
Axel smirked, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Out of control is our middle name. But we've got this. Just keep doing what you're doing. Leave the rest to us."
Naminé returned to her drawing, though her hands were still a bit shaky. Axel watched her for a moment longer, then turned to leave the room.
"Stay focused, kid. We're counting on you," he said over his shoulder, his voice carrying a rare note of sincerity.
As the door closed behind him, Naminé took a deep breath and steadied her hands. She knew the stakes were high, but she also knew that she had a part to play in this complex game.
"I need to warn him," she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible.
Her eyes fell on her drawing. It depicted a sprawling ruin suspended high above the clouds, platforms and ancient structures bathed in an eerie, colorless light. Sonic was there, his form a blur of motion as he dashed across ancient looking pathways. But something else caught her attention—she had drawn herself into the picture, standing on a distant platform, her hand reaching out as if trying to communicate something vital.
The scene was hauntingly beautiful yet filled with a sense of urgency. The distant spires and floating islands seemed to shimmer, the lines of the drawing almost vibrating with hidden energy. Naminé's figure, small but unmistakable, stood out against the intricate backdrop.
She traced a finger over the image, feeling the weight of the unspoken message. The ancient ruins, the lifeless pillars, and the shadowy figures lurking in the background—all pieces of a puzzle that needed to be solved.
The girl closed her eyes, focusing on the image, willing her message to reach its intended recipient.
"Please, understand," she murmured. "There's more at stake than you realise."
As she opened her eyes, the drawing seemed to come alive, the shadows deepening and the lines blurring ever so slightly. She knew Sonic was out there, racing through the ruins, and she could only hope that her warning would reach him in time.
With a final, steadying breath, Naminé picked up her pencil and continued to draw, each stroke infused with a desperate hope that the pieces would fall into place before it was too late.
