The clash of steel and the hiss of lightning filled the air as Jupiter fought against the relentless tide of dark minions. She was fury incarnate, her eyes blazing with electricity as she whipped a bolt of lightning towards a rock outcropping. The stone splintered and cascaded down, crushing a small group before they struck.
Around her, the mouth of the cave loomed ominously, its entrance a gaping maw that seemed to swallow the very light. The jagged rocks and twisted roots around the entrance gave it a sinister, almost alive appearance, as if the cave itself were part of the darkness. Shadows danced in the flickering light of the battle, creating an eerie tableau of conflict.
Despite not being sensitive to the spiritual side of things, even she could sense the terrible dark aura that penetrated this place. Her heart thudded in time with the lightning, each beat fueling the rage that coursed through her veins. The scent of earth and moss mingled with the tang of electricity, heightening her senses. Every movement was a precise strike, every bolt a testament to her wrath and determination.
Every muscle burned with the effort, but she welcomed the pain. It was a reminder of her purpose, of the need to rescue Serenity and crush the darkness that threatened to consume them all.
A dark minion lunged at her, its eyes void of any humanity. With a snarl, she swung her fist, a crackle of electricity arcing from her knuckles. The creature convulsed and fell, its body twitching as the life drained from it. Jupiter didn't pause; she couldn't afford to. The tide of enemies seemed endless, each one more determined than the last to drag them into the abyss.
Beside her, the cave walls echoed the sounds of battle—the clang of weapons, the grunts of exertion, and the cries of pain. The darkness inside the cave felt palpable, a living entity that sought to pull them into its depths. But she refused to be cowed. She was a Guardian, a warrior, and she would fight until her last breath to protect those she loved.
Snapping a bolt like a whip, she narrowly missed Nephrite. He snarled a curse. "Watch what you're doing, Thunder!"
"Stars, I love it when you call me that," Jupiter said with a menacing grin as she knocked down another group. "It's not my fault you're in the way!"
He spun, deflecting an arrow headed for her chest. Nephrite remained close to her, fighting by her side. Their movements blurred together, a seamless dance of power and precision against the tide of darkness. They calculated each strike, ensuring precision in every maneuver. Despite never having fought side by side before, they could anticipate each other's moves and reactions with an almost supernatural ease.
"Watch your left!" Nephrite called out, his sword flashing as he parried a strike aimed at Jupiter.
Jupiter responded with a fierce kick, sending her attacker sprawling. "Thanks! Stay down!" She swung her arm, and a bolt of electricity arced from her fingertips, striking a cluster of enemies.
Despite being neck deep in enemies, she had to admit that Nephrite was very attractive. The flashes of electric white sure did wonders for his complexion.
Nephrite grinned, his eyes glinting with a rather fascinating mix of bloodthirsty rage and fear. "You're welcome. Nice shot!" He spun his sword, slicing through the air with deadly precision. A group of dark minions fell back, their forms disintegrating into shadows.
Another wave of enemies surged forward, the darkness almost oozing from every inch of the transformed shadows. Jupiter and Nephrite pressed on, their combined efforts creating a formidable barrier against the dark tide. The air hummed with energy, the acrid scent of battle mingling with the damp, earthy aroma of the cave.
Nephrite raised his sword, catching a stray bolt of electricity that had arced from Jupiter's attack. With a swift motion, he redirected it towards an advancing group of minions, their bodies convulsing as the electric energy surged through them.
"Impressive. Do that again," he said.
There was something about his forearms that made her weak in the knees. Well, not literally. Nothing made her weak. But stars, his forearms could have done it. It was something about the strength and how the muscle rippled with the strike of his sword. It was a magnetism that pulled her attention even amidst the chaos of battle.
Jupiter smirked, her eyes flashing. "Only if you beg, Nephrite." She summoned another bolt of lightning, her power crackling around her like a living thing. The energy pulsed through her, feeding her strength as she unleashed it upon their enemies.
The two warriors moved with deadly grace, their attacks synchronized in a symphony of destruction. Jupiter's fists crackled with electric energy, each punch sending a surge of power through her opponents. Nephrite's sword sliced through the air, its blade a blur as he cut down any who dared approach.
"Behind you!" Nephrite shouted, lunging forward to intercept a dark minion that had tried to flank them.
Jupiter spun, her hand outstretched as a tendril of electricity snaked from her fingers, wrapping around the minion and pulling it to the ground. "Got it! Let's finish this!" She stepped forward, her eyes locked on the remaining enemies.
With a final surge, they pushed the dark minions away from the cave entrance. Nephrite's sword flashed, and Jupiter's bolts of electricity danced through the air, each strike inflicting damage.
As the last of their enemies fell, Jupiter and Nephrite stood side by side, their breaths heavy but victorious. Although they had neutralized the immediate threat, the tension lingered in the air, reminding them of the ongoing battle against the darkness.
Jupiter glanced at Nephrite, a hint of a smile on her lips. "Not bad, Nephrite. Not bad at all."
Nephrite chuckled. "I'll say the same to you, Thunder."
It had been frantic when the moon cried out at the loss of its princess. Upon arriving on Earth, they had immediately joined the battle to free her. Endymion's Kings had been fighting tirelessly to break through the waves of dark minions that guarded the cave where Serenity and Endymion were.
She could still feel the pulses of adrenaline with that potent mix of fury and fear as she thought about the prince and princess trapped in that hellhole. Now, with the immediate threat outside the cave quelled, the only thing that remained was finding Endymion and Serenity.
Mercury and Zoisite vanished into the cave, and Jupiter itched to join them. But there would already be a crowd in the cave, and she didn't enjoy small dark spaces. Better to stay out here.
Mars and Jadeite worked together to cleanse the area of the poisonous dark aura that had accumulated. Her holy fire burst into life at random intervals, bathing the growing night with a new light. Jadeite's own red power swirled around, accentuating when needed.
Venus and Kunzite wandered a little way off, checking the other cave entrances to make sure they didn't conceal more dark minions. Her golden burst of power flared to life occasionally to check for hidden pockets of darkness.
Jupiter bounced on the edge of her toes, unable to stay still while the urge to fight and kill something was so strong. If she didn't do something soon, she was going to go crazy! Hopefully, Venus and Kunzite would find another pocket of dark minions because then she could at least DO something.
"Nervous?" Nephrite asked.
She snorted. "No, too much excess adrenaline. I'll be fine soon."
"But for now, you're going to bounce off the walls?"
"Yep." She grinned at him.
Despite the tension, she couldn't help but notice how Nephrite's presence seemed to anchor her. The way his muscles flexed beneath his tunic, the strength evident in every movement he made—it was mesmerizing.
His forearms, corded with muscle and dusted with a light sheen of sweat, caught her attention. She found herself wondering what it would feel like to run her fingers along them, to feel that power beneath her touch. His steady, confident demeanor only made him more attractive. It was intoxicating.
The post-battle clarity brought everything into sharp focus. She couldn't deny the attraction she felt towards him. His rough edges, the way he handled himself in combat, even the playful glint in his eye when he teased her—it all added up to a magnetic pull she couldn't resist.
Now she was gawking at him, admiring the way the growing twilight highlighted his features. The raw power he exuded was electrifying, and she couldn't shake the desire to be closer to him, to feel that energy directly.
But before she could fully appreciate the soft way the dying sunlight caressed Nephrite's skin, a sudden movement at the cave entrance caught her eye. Endymion emerged, his face etched with anguish and desperation. In his arms, Princess Serenity lay unmoving, her body cradled against his chest. Jupiter's heart clenched at the sight of her princess, once so vibrant and full of life, now reduced to a lifeless shell.
"Jupiter." Nephrite's voice was soft.
Serenity's hair, usually a shimmering silver, hung limp and dull. Her skin, normally glowing with the moon's radiance, was ashen and gray. Even her dress, a symbol of her ethereal beauty, was tattered and stained, a testament to the horrors she had endured.
"Jupiter, wait," Nephrite cautioned, his voice low and steady. "Don't do anything rash."
All of Jupiter's protective instincts surged to life, a tidal wave of anger and guilt crashing over her. She had failed in her most sacred duty—to protect the moon princess. The weight of that failure settled heavily on her shoulders, a burden she would carry forever. But she refused to let it crush her. No, she would make amends. She would redeem herself with blood and sacrifice, do whatever it took to ensure that nothing like this ever happened again.
Crossing the space between them in several massive strides, Jupiter slid to a stop before the prince of Earth. "Give her to me," she demanded, her voice raw with emotion.
Almost imperceptibly, Endymion's grip tightened around Serenity, his eyes flashing with a protective instinct that mirrored Jupiter's own. She tensed, ready to rip the princess from his unworthy hands if necessary. "She's hurt because of you!" Jupiter accused, her words laced with venom. "Hand her over!"
Nephrite approached from behind, his presence a solid warmth at her back. He laid a comforting hand on her shoulder, a gesture meant to soothe and calm. But Jupiter shrugged off his grasp, unwilling to accept comfort when her princess was in such obvious distress.
Endymion made no move to surrender her princess. The twilight sky cast an eerie glow over the scene, the fading light filtering through the dense forest canopy. Shadows lengthened, creeping across the rocky terrain like dark tendrils. The cave entrance loomed ominously, a gaping maw that seemed to swallow the remaining daylight. The air was heavy with the scent of damp earth and the lingering traces of dark energy, a cloying smell that clung to the back of Jupiter's throat.
"I know you're hurting, Thunder," Nephrite said. "But you need to think this through."
Jupiter shrugged off his touch and whipped around to glare at him. "She's the moon princess. I'm a guardian of the moon. I can actually help her."
"I'm not going to just hand her over," Endymion said, a sharp edge to his voice.
Jupiter clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. The pain grounded her, a sharp contrast to the dull ache in her chest. The scent of battle still clung to them—sweat, blood, and the acrid tang of dark energy—a reminder of the ordeal they had all endured. But none had suffered more than Serenity, and Jupiter would not rest until she saw her princess safe and restored.
Mercury probably saved the prince's life. She darted out of the cave, smudges of dust on her uniform and face. Her blue hair was disheveled, and her eyes wide with worry. Zoisite emerged soon after, nearly imperceptible traces of dark energy clinging to his body like a second skin. Jupiter used the distraction to lunge at Endymion. If he wouldn't willingly surrender Serenity, then Jupiter would take her by force.
Endymion and Nephrite acted at the same time, their movements fluid and synchronized. The prince twisted and dodged her outstretched hands, his cape flaring out behind him like a shadow. Nephrite took hold of her shoulders, his grip firm but gentle. In a smooth motion, he turned her away from the prince, his body a solid barrier between them.
"Get your hands off of me!" Jupiter snarled. She could feel the crackle of electricity beneath her skin, itching to be released.
Mercury was there now, her gaze focused solely on Serenity. Her fingers trembled slightly as she reached out to touch the princess, her brows knitting together in concentration. Zoisite eyed Jupiter with hostility, his stance protective as he positioned himself beside Mercury. Jupiter almost snorted at the implications. If anything, he'd be more likely to hurt Mercury.
Mercury's voice was strained as she spoke. "The princess is alive, but she needs the moon! Now!" The urgency in her tone was palpable, cutting through the tense atmosphere like a knife.
Venus stepped into action, commanding the scene. The fading light glinted off her golden hair as she strode forward, and Jupiter knew that determined expression. This time, Endymion didn't hesitate to hand the princess over, and Jupiter glared at him, hoping to get the chance to electrocute him into next week.
At least now, the princess was in the hands of a proper guardian. Instantly, Mercury worked on summoning a moonpath, her hands glowing with a soft blue light. The skin on her arms tingled with the influx of power that sprouted with the action.
Venus turned toward her. "You and Mars stay here. Look for any stragglers and take care of them. Make sure no one follows us. Mars, try to cleanse the area more. I don't want anyone from the Dark Kingdom to use the moonpath remnants to get to us."
Mars gave a quick nod, her raven hair swaying with the motion. Without words, Endymion nodded at Jadeite, a silent understanding passing between them. The two walked off, their footsteps muffled by the soft earth as they summoned their sacred powers once more.
When the moonbeams collected, there was a tangible sigh of relief when they landed on Serenity. The moon welcomed its lost princess with a soothing caress of power and a cascade of effervescent energy. Then Venus, Mercury, and Serenity started up towards the moon.
Endymion stayed where he was, watching the figures as they moved higher into the sky.
Jupiter's hands twitched, eager to find more enemies to fight, to channel her anger and guilt into something tangible. The growing darkness pressed in around them, the forest now a sea of shadows broken only by the faint glow of Mars and Jadeite's power. She scanned the treeline, her senses on high alert, ready for any sign of movement or threat. The night was far from over, and Jupiter would not rest until she knew her princess was safe.
"Come on." Nephrite grabbed her elbow.
She shrugged him off quickly and gave Endymion one last glare before turning. They'd only walked a few paces before the heavens opened and the rain started. In the downpour, the air took on new life. It smelled like rebirth, with the crisp scent of stone mingling with the damp earth. Sounds became muffled as the clop of water drowned everything else out.
Jupiter cursed and flicked her soaked hair aside, the droplets splattering against her face. Despite the sudden downpour, she didn't mind staying and finding more baddies to crush.
Nephrite gave her a lopsided smile, his hair plastered to his forehead. "Lucky for you, Endymion wants me to join you."
She snorted. "Unlucky is more like it. Why would I want a pathetic excuse for a warrior to come with me?"
Jupiter almost started drooling as she noticed the rain roll across the edges of his forearms. As if on cue, thunder rumbled overhead, and lightning arced across the sky, illuminating their surroundings in a brilliant flash. Jupiter tilted her head up, closing her eyes as the rain pelted her face, a smile spreading across her lips.
"I can't decide which is more beautiful, the starry sky or you," he murmured, his words nearly lost in the storm's din.
Jupiter's eyes snapped open, and she smacked his stomach hard enough that he doubled over, coughing and laughing.
"Stuff it," she said, but there was no real heat behind her words.
Secretly, she loved hearing those words from him. Loved that someone found her attractive instead of intimidating. No one on the moon had ever shown any interest. If there was anyone she could picture herself with, it was him. And not just because she wanted to lick his forearms.
They continued to walk through the rain-soaked landscape, constantly on the lookout for any remaining dark minions. Lightning continued to dance across the sky, and Jupiter plucked a bolt from the air before it could strike Nephrite, the energy crackling in her palm before dissipating harmlessly.
"You're handy to have around in a storm, Thunder."
She grinned at him. "Not so much. You wouldn't be in danger if I weren't here. I attract electricity."
"Still, your company is enough."
"Why are you being so cheesy? It's forbidden for us to be together."
"Perhaps, but from what I'm seeing, everyone else is developing feelings. Why can't I?"
Jupiter didn't know what to say to that. Because that almost sounded like a declaration of some kind. But she couldn't imagine herself disobeying the rules like that… could she? Then again, she really enjoyed being around him. There was something about Nephrite that made her feel both feminine and powerful. No one else had that effect.
And his forearms were amazing.
As they roamed around the cliffs and rocks, their conversation flowed easily, the earlier tension of battle melting away. Jupiter found herself glancing over at Nephrite, marveling at how the flashes of lightning cast his features in a striking light.
Watching how the raindrops curved down his chin distracted her, which is why the errant bolt smacked right into her chest and arced between them. The lightning threaded back and forth, linking them in a dazzling display of energy. Jupiter didn't know what it meant because that had never happened before.
As the lightning died away, she could still sense a crackling connection between them, like an invisible string of electricity binding them together. Now a low cracking energy resided in her chest where there was none before. It was both comforting and disconcerting.
Nephrite turned to her, his expression serious. "I'm never going to walk in the rain with anyone else. Only with you," he said, his voice low and earnest.
A blush crept up Jupiter's neck, and she made a split-second decision. With little consideration, she yanked Nephrite close and into a searing kiss. Their lips met in a clash of electricity and pent-up emotion. The rain continued to pour down, but they lost themselves in the moment. The world faded away, and only the lightning and thunder bore witness to their passion.
