Chapter 4: SFIT: Meeting Baymax, Akela & Callaghan
Hiro, Genji and Kaiya followed Tadashi to his lab as Fred continued talking. "Laser eyes?" Fred asked. "What?" Honey Lemon asked. "Tingly fingers?" Fred asked. "Never gonna happen." Wasabi said. "Hey, what about a growth serum, huh?" Fred asked. "Are you quite done?" Hornet asked in annoyance.
Later, Tadashi and his triplet siblings entered his lab. "Honey, I'm home!" He called. A Polynesian boy around Tadashi's age walked out from behind a display case. "Hey, there he is. The genius of my dreams." He said as he walked up to Tadashi and greeted him with a kiss. "Hiro, Genji, Kaiya, this is my boyfriend." Tadashi introduced. "Akela Kameāloha. It's nice to finally meet Tadashi's triplet siblings." Akela said, shaking each of the triplets' hands. "Oh, you're Akela. Tadashi's told us so much about you." Genji said. "Thank you. Tadashi's told me about you guys too." Akela said. "Akela's not only my boyfriend, but he's also my lab partner." Tadashi said. "You flatter me, babe. But please don't stop." Akela flirted.
"So, uh, what have you guys been working on?" Hiro asked. "I'll show you." Tadashi said. He picked up a roll of duct tape and bit off a piece. "Duct tape? I hate to break it to you, bro. Already been invented." Hiro said with a sigh. Just then, Tadashi took Hiro's arm and unrolled his sleeve. "Hey." Tadashi stuck the tape on and ripped it off. "OH! Dude! Ow!" Hiro screamed in pain. "Tadashi, what did you do?!" Genji exclaimed. "Are you insane?!" Kaiya exclaimed. Suddenly, a red box nearby activated and opened up as a white robot activated and inflated itself. "This is what we've been working on." Tadashi said. Hiro, Genji and Kaiya looked on in awe. The robot stepped off its platform and started walking towards the triplets. But it stopped for a second after it walked into a stool. It picked up the stool, looked around and placed it off to the side before walking back up to the triplets. "Hello. I am Baymax. Your personal healthcare companion. I was alerted to the need for medical attention when you said 'Ow'." The robot, Baymax, introduced, with Tadashi mouthing the word ow. "A robotic nurse." Hiro said. "He looks pretty cool." Genji said. "Yeah, he's so cute." Kaiya said. "On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your pain?" Baymax asked, showing a pain scale on his chest. "Physical or emotional?" Hiro asked, glaring at Tadashi, who gave him a pouty face.
"I will scan you now." Baymax said, scanning Hiro for any injuries or symptoms. "Scan complete. You have a slight epidermal abrasion on your forearm." He said, showing the injury on Hiro's arm."I suggest an anti-bacterial spray." "Whoa, whoa, whoa. What's in the spray specifically?" Hiro asked. "The primal ingredient is bacitracin." Baymax said, showing the diagram of bacitracin. "That's a bummer. I'm actually allergic to that." Hiro said. "You are not allergic to bacitracin. You do have a mild allergy to…peanuts." Baymax said. "Huh. Not bad. You two have done some serious coding on this thing, huh?" Hiro asked as he allowed Baymax to tend to the injury, spraying the anti-bacterial spray from his finger. "Uh-huh. We programmed him with over 10,000 medical procedures." Tadashi said, tapping a button on Baymax's chest, which opened a compartment holding a green medical chip with Tadashi's name and a doctor emoji. "This chip is what makes Baymax…Baymax."
As Hiro reinserted the chip, he and his siblings inspected Baymax. "Vinyl?" Genji asked, poking Baymax's inflatable coating. "Yeah, going for a non-threatening huggable kind of thing." Akela said. "Looks like a walking marshmallow. No offense." Hiro said. "I am a robot. I cannot be offended." Baymax said. "Hyperspectral cameras?" Kaiya asked, inspecting Baymax's optics. "Yep." Tadashi said. The triplets then pushed their faces against Baymax's chest to check out his robot skeleton. "Titanium skeleton?" Hiro asked. "Carbon fiber." Tadashi said. "Right. Even lighter." Genji said. "Whoa. Killer actuators. Where did you get those?" Kaiya asked. "Oh, we just machined them right here, in-home." Akela said. "Really?" Hiro asked. "Yep. He can lift 1,000 pounds." Tadashi said. "Shut up." Hiro said in awe. "You have been a good boy. Have a lollipop." Baymax said, holding up a lollipop. "Nice." Hiro said as he took the lollipop and unpackaged it. "I cannot deactivate until you say you are satisfied with your care." Baymax said. "Well then, I am satisfied with my care." Hiro said. With that, Baymax walked back towards his box. "He's going to help a lot of people." Tadashi said. "Hey, what kind of battery does he use?" Kaiya asked. "Lithium ion." Tadashi said. "You know, supercapacitors will charge way faster." Hiro said as Baymax stepped back onto his box, deflated and shrunk down. "Huh. I'll make a note of that." Akela said.
"Burning the midnight oil, you 2?" A voice asked from the entrance. The Hamadas and Akela turned around to see a man standing in the door. "Oh, hey, Professor. Actually, we were just finishing up." Tadashi said as he and Akela walked over to their computer. "You must be Hiro, Genji and Kaiya. Bot-fighters, right. When my daughter was younger, that's all she wanted to do." The man said. "Sounds like quite a girl." Genji said. "Oh, yes. May I?" The man asked, gesturing to the triplets' bots. "Sure." Hiro said as he, Genji and Kaiya handed their robots to the man. "Hmm. Magnetic-bearing servos." The man deduced. "Pretty sick, huh? Wanna see how we put them together?" Hiro asked. "Hey, geniuses. He invented them." Tadashi said through the hologram widow. "Wait a minute. You're…Robert Callaghan?" Kaiya asked in shock. "As in the Callaghan-Catmull spline and Callaghan's Laws of Robotics?" Hiro asked. "You're really that Robert Callaghan?" Genji asked. "That's right. Ever think about applying here? Your ages wouldn't be an issue." Callaghan said as he handed the triplets back their robots. "Oh, I don't know. From what Tadashi told me, these 3 are pretty serious about their careers in bot-fighting." Akela said as he and Tadashi exited their lab. "Well, kind of serious." Hiro said. "Yeah, we had a few ups and downs. Especially earlier tonight." Genji said. "I can see why. With your bots, winning must come easy." Callaghan said. "Yeah, we guess." Kaiya said. "Well, if you kids like things easy, then my program isn't for you. We push the boundaries of robotics here. My students go on to shape the future." Callaghan said.
Hiro, Genji and Kaiya put this to thought. "Come on, geniuses. We better head out." Tadashi said as he headed towards the elevator with his lover. Hiro and Genji followed, but Kaiya stayed a little longer when she noticed Callaghan staring at her. "Is…something wrong, Mr. Callaghan?" She asked. "Oh! No, not really. It's just…you remind me of my daughter. Just a little bit." Callaghan said. "I see. She must be beautiful." Kaiya said. "Yes…she was." Callaghan said with a hint of sadness, slight of anger in his tone which Kaiya didn't notice. "Kaiya, let's go!" Hiro called as he held the elevator door. "Coming, guys!" Kaiya exclaimed as she hurried to the elevator. "Nice to meet you, triplets. Good luck with the bot-fights." Callaghan said as he watched her go into the elevator with her brothers.
Wasn't that cool? Hiro, Genji and Kaiya meet Tadashi's lover, Akela, and their special project, Baymax. Afterwards, they met the institute's main professor, Robert Callaghan. But there was something odd about the way he was looking at Kaiya, saying that she reminded him of his daughter. What dark secret was he holding? Will Hiro, Genji and Kaiya change their minds about going to school? Leave a review if you'd like.
