Guardian sighed. They wished they were better at this. But humans were messy and complex, especially the Yagami siblings…
Have you ever fallen in love so deeply you can't breathe? You can't think, you can't focus?
That was me with Mei, my secret girlfriend. Yep, I was not too ready to come out to my family or other friends just yet. Light would understand, but I was already hiding so much from him. And everyone else. A couple more secrets wouldn't hurt.
Mei had kept it a secret from her family as well… they weren't the most accepting people. It was horrifying and yet so wonderful dating someone, even when the whole world had gone to Hell. When we weren't discussing the Anti-Kira business we talked about the future.
"We'll move to England," Mei told me.
"Why there?" I giggled.
Mei shrugged. "I don't know. I want to go on one of those big red buses."
"No way," I snorted. "We should go to the palace!"
"Bleh, royals," Mei stuck her tongue out, and I rolled my eyes. We laid on her bed, holding hands. I breathed out, my arms shaking from pure excitement. Tears filled my eyes. Tears of joy? Fear? I didn't even know.
"You can't see them, but I have a Guardian Angel," I told Mei.
"Oh?" she asked.
Guardian said nothing, their eyes harsh.
"They give me advice," I looked right back into their glare, "I'd be screwed without them."
"Makes sense," Mei giggled. "Nice to meet you, Guardian. Even if I can't see you."
"Hmm…" Guardian mused.
"What did they say?" Mei asked.
"Not much," I admitted. "They're not very chatty at the moment."
"That's fine," Mei shrugged.
She grew closer to me; the both of us blushed.
"We don't have any privacy then," she sighed.
"Oh…" I gulped. "Um? Guardian…?"
"Something may happen while I am gone," they replied.
"It's just the two of us," I rolled my eyes. "We'll be fine! Don't worry!"
As Long as Mei was here, everything was fine. Guardian's form tensed up, their wings in the air.
"I will be back in twenty minutes," they said, before dissipating.
"Twenty minutes," I rolled my eyes. "Well, better than nothing."
"Sayu…" Mei reached over, her lips inches away from mine. Heat rose to my cheeks. I giggled, putting my face in my hands.
"What will you do when we find Kira?" she asked.
That caught me off guard. I looked away, swallowing.
"Tell the cops," I said, "no way am I gonna kill them."
"What if killing them was the only option…?" Mei asked.
I pulled my hands through my hair.
"I…" my skin was clammy.
What if it was the only option? It was only one person. One very evil person. But I didn't want to be like Kira. No one deserved to die. Right?
"Maybe some people deserve it," Mei told me, "dying."
"No," I turned away. "No one deserves it. Kira will go to jail."
Mei just stared at me, listlessly. She sighed, moving under her covers.
"Being stuck in jail for the rest of their life," she muttered. "That's just as bad."
My throat was all choked up. My eyes were burning with more tears.
And then I was back under the covers with her, so close, so safe.
"No more questions," I pleaded.
"Okay," she sighed.
I loved her so much. My relationship with her is what kept me sane, what kept me going. Without her… I'd be done for. Her, Guardian… and my family, of course.
I didn't think about a thing, as the two of us fell asleep.
Speaking of girlfriends, Light's-not-so-secret girlfriend Misa Amane came around a few times. She was a nice girl, with a cute smile and a nice laugh. She was always nice to me, giving me a friendly wave and a hug whenever she stopped by.
Guardian didn't seem too fond of her, but they weren't fond of a lot of people, honestly. So much for a guardian angel.
"Hi, Sayu!" Misa chirped, pulling me into a big hug. Once again she was visiting, carrying a bag over her shoulder.
I hugged her back, eyeing my brother over her shoulder. I jerked at Light's bedroom.
"So, you and Light getting busy in there?" I teased.
Misa went bright red, while Light ground his teeth.
"Don't you have homework to catch up on, Sayu?" he asked, smiling with a murderous glare.
I stuck my tongue out, heading into the hall. Light did not seem very happy… I wished the guy could just get with the man he loved already. But Light and I were different like that, I suppose.
"... you're stressed about Kira as usual," Light said, looking over me. He'd just barged into my room, the prick he was. Annoyance hit me like a brick.
I sat up. "My girlfriend said-" I gasped, covering my mouth.
Light titled his head. "Your girlfriend?"
"Oh, you know how us girls have our girlfriends," I giggled, anxiously.
Light narrowed his eyes. "Is that so?"
Damn. He could read me as well as I could read him.
"... don't tell Mom and Dad," I whimpered.
"I won't," he promised. "How long have you been together?"
"Only a week so far," I replied. "And don't get me wrong! I still like boys!"
"No escape from Hideki Ryuga," he joked.
I sat close to my brother. I hoped Kira didn't kill him, because then they'd get hell from me.
"Lightie," my voice was strained.
"What's wrong?" he asked, concerned.
I swallowed, my throat dry.
"Nothing's wrong," I told him, "because we're gonna catch Kira!"
I ignored the sickness, because I was with the smartest guy in the world. The man I was going to save from Kira.
Naomi and I walked alongside each other. Her brow was knitted, fists clenched.
"Two Kiras?" she asked, eyeing me over.
"Yeah," I replied.
"L came up with the same theory," Naomi replied, "give yourself more credit."
I went all hot in my cheeks, looking away.
"How are we going to catch both Kiras…?" I asked.
"The Kiras have different ways of thinking," Naomi replied. "The 2nd Kira seems to be a lot more reckless. Perhaps we could take advantage of that…"
I couldn't believe it. There was no way they'd go through with a plan like this. It was madness.
"You want me to be Kira?" Light asked.
"It's clear this Kira is dragging us into another game," L mused, "we'll play along with a few tapes of our own… which means we'll need a Kira too."
"You can't be serious!" Dad spoke up.
"Yeah!" I jumped in. "My big brother-"
"Everyone, please," Light spoke up. "It's alright. It's only an act, after all."
The rest of the police force stared at him.
"Wow, he really is mature," Matsuda muttered.
I supposed Light had a point, but I felt uneasy anyway.
"That's Lightie for ya," I grimaced.
"Then let's get recording," L spoke up.
I stood next to L, eyeing the monitors on the wall.
"See me later," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper.
And the uneasy feeling grew worse.
L was staring at me, tilting his head. He had another dessert in front of him. Man, they just kept on coming.
"Two Kiras…" he muttered, thoughtfully.
"What if another Anti-Kira shows up?" I asked.
"That will not happen," Guardian answered, a ghostly hand on my shoulder. "Only one Life Note exists at a time."
In a way, it was a weight off my chest. Two people having life notes was just as terrifying as the death notes. At the same time, I didn't want to be alone. I didn't want any of this, and it's not like I wanted to force it on anyone, but having another alongside me would mean so much.
L tapped his fingers together.
"So, do you have any guesses about the 2nd Kira's identity?" I asked.
"I do," he responded.
He turned to his monitor, which displayed an image of none other than Misa Amane?!
I gasped, jumping back.
"Why her?!" I asked.
My stomach sank. There was no way I could picture anyone like Misa-Misa being Kira, but on the other hand, who would picture ME being the Anti-Kira?
I swallowed. If Misa really was the 2nd Kira…
"My brother's in danger!" I shouted.
I knew Light was really smart and mature and the rest, but I wasn't going to underestimate Misa.
"You of all people shouldn't underestimate him," L replied. "Chances are, he's already got it figured out himself."
That was a good point. L must've noticed my nervousness, so he gestured a hand, letting me sit down.
L turned away. "You see… I have a new plan in mind."
