"This hospital is a "farm" which is part of a human-Cylon breeding program to bring the Cylons 'closer to God' by being able to procreate. Female patients at the hospital are being harvested of their ovaries so there is a steady supply of test subjects. There are plenty of these across the colonies, and on Caprica, there are several hundred thousand in our captivity. We also have a substantial number of colonial servicemen and women, several tens of thousands along with a few prominent government officials. Additionally, there are some cult groups, spin-offs of the Soldiers of the One, who were spared."
Sharon ValeriChapter 26: The Farm
"His vitals are stable, and he is starting to wake up." Dr Cottle said to the senior officers of the fleet, along with President Roslin. Just in time for the fleet to reunite, Adama showed signs of waking up. He had been in critical condition for some time and Cottle had been away on other ships responding to several cases of various sicknesses and illnesses. This had forced a young medic to operate on him and even though this medic wasn't exactly qualified he had done a superb job. He'd probably be getting a promotion soon if he hadn't already.
Adama began to wake up, his vitals growing stronger until he was awake.
"What the hell happened to me?" He asked. Everyone around him recounted the recent events that had taken place since he had been shot. It was an interesting journey, and Adama paid close attention especially when the damage to the ship was recounted.
"I see." He replied. "So Starbuck is still out there somewhere?"
"That's right, Commander," Lee replied. "We've had no contact with her since this all began and she left."
"There is something else that should be discussed, commander, and this is that you tried to overthrow a legitimate government of the colonies," Roslin said. "You had no authority to carry out the arrest, and there was no legal agreement I would keep out of military matters. I am the only one here who can declare martial law, and the colonial fleet can't even arrest people. You said before that there is a reason that the military and police are separated, the military fights the enemies of the state, and the police protect and serve its people. When the military becomes both, the enemies of the state tend to become the people. Have you not uttered that quote before?" She said her voice slowly rising as time went on. Adama nodded in response. He had said that multiple times before.
"Now under other circumstances, you'd probably be arrested for treason, tried, and due to the current situation, executed. However, let's just say that none of that will happen if you apologize and don't take any action against me or Starbuck if she does ever come back. You will remain in command of the fleet and continue like this had never happened." Roslin replied with a sly smile. Adama didn't say anything for a bit.
"Alright. I apologize and accept the offer." He said weakly. "Though I do hope you will stay out of military affairs."
"That I intend to do. The officers here are all the experts in their field, and I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of them." She said, looking around at all of them. "I hope you have a safe recovery, Admiral."
"Well, that could have been a lot worse," Baker said as they walked out, leaving Adama alone.
"This is probably the best outcome." Hudson agreed. "If Adama was prosecuted, there would be uproar within the fleet. He still has a lot of supporters."
"Sometimes, the law needs to be bent to do the right thing. Especially if this could lead to civil war." Rendino said.
"I won't disagree," Garrett said, sighing. "It's what we have to do in the circumstances. But I don't like it. We're just going to pretend that he didn't just try to overthrow the democratically elected government of the colonies?"
"I wasn't elected. I just succeeded Adar." Roslin replied. "My power rests on nothing more than people believing that I am the president."
"So how do we make sure something like this doesn't happen again?" Hudson asked. He had stayed relatively quiet this entire time. This entire set of circumstances had put him in a difficult position due to his relationship with the commander being stronger than anyone else here except maybe Roslin.
"I doubt he will try that again," Roslin said. "He may be in command of the fleet, but he now knows that the three of you will not just go along with any order he gives."
"I sure hope so," Rendino replied as they began to walk their separate ways.
Meanwhile back on Caprica, Starbuck, Helo, and Grinham made good time down the backroads that they were using to their location. They didn't see anyone else as they were traveling to their destination and managed to avoid the detection of the Cylons. They soon in fact began to get close to the base, with only a day on the road left till they reached it.
So far the three of them had been lucky. They had managed to avoid getting into trouble with the Cylons probably because they traveled to places that they were not looking.
However, that was about to change. They had to turn onto a major highway for a bit. They did so, and soon they were passing the ranks of burned-out abandoned vehicles that had been strafed by raiders that had been circling the planet for quite some time.
As they drove along, they all noticed something was off. It was soon figured out what it was going to be.
The Cylons were on to them.
Helo popped into the combined heavy machine gun and anti-tank missile turret and began firing away at the Cylons as Starbuck hit the gas. The raiders' shots mostly went wild with the few that hit mostly being glancing blows. Cylon after Cylon was cut down as they escaped.
The Humvee was in front and took the brunt of the fire, but it was armored against small arms and therefore did not take that much damage. So they managed to survive the encounter without much issue. The vehicle would survive, and hopefully, they would avoid detection as time went on. This appeared to be the case, as they were coming up to a major road junction where several major highways and smaller roads intersected. They got onto another back road and kept driving, and soon had left the Cylons behind. Fueled by stim pills, energy drinks, and candy that they had raided from the grocery store back, they were soon only six hours away from where they were headed, which was the base.
However, as they were driving they noticed several heavy raiders coming and going from a place in the distance. The large Cylon craft didn't seem to have noticed their presence, however, which made them relieved.
"There's something in there," Starbuck said. "Hello, do you have the map?" He pulled out the map and began consulting it. There were hundreds of lines, labels, and other information on it but he soon figured out where they were.
"It's the Jason General Hospital." He said.
Starbuck signaled to the truck behind them. "Let's stop, and figure out what they're doing there. Recon on foot." The three of them were soon out of their vehicles, which they had parked deep in some underbrush. They took some supplies and began their recon mission.
They soon approached the hospital, sneaking up on a nearby hill. What they saw was both shocking and disturbing, but also gave them a little bit of hope.
The hospital had been converted into a Cylon base. There were several additional buildings that they had built in the area, including a small airbase with a squadron of raiders parked neatly along with a few heavy raiders. Those seemed to be primarily delivering cargo and other supplies to the base. They could also see plenty of Centurions, along with several armored vehicles.
But when they looked at the hospital itself they were the most concerned.
There were ranks of prisoners being moved around by Centurions. By what they could see there were a majority that were women, in fact well over half.
"We have to do something about them!" Helo said.
"You think the three of us can take on an entire garrison?" Grinham replied. "That's a great way to die."
"If you get back to your base, they can organize a strike against this place." A voice behind them said. It was Sharon, in her colonial flight suit. Everyone immediately pointed their guns at her. She put her hands up."
"I'm not here to kill you or reveal your location. I left to run interference. The Cylons have been barely looking for you, and when they have been it's been in the wrong places. And I've gained a lot of useful intel for all of you."
"How can we trust you?"
"The fact that I have your baby, Helo." She replied. And also, I know the coordinates of the base. It would be destroyed by now or at least under attack by now if I wanted to."
"You're still a fraction toaster." Starbuck turned to Helo. "And you fraked a toaster.
"And I also have valuable intelligence." She replied. "I can tell you what's going on over there."
"Then frackin tell us!" Grinham replied.
"The Cylons still know that there is significant resistance in the colonies, both on the ground and in space. The raid on that convoy several weeks ago wasn't the only occurrence, and while these resistance fighters only have so much in terms of supplies they're causing significant trouble. If Galactica can liberate one of these farms, not only will they gain a major advantage in manpower but it will save a lot of people."
"How can we be sure that this isn't some sort of trap?"
"By the time Galactica mounts a rescue mission I won't be relevant anymore. I won't be able to contact them and therefore figure out what to do with them." Sharon replied.
Helo glanced at Starbuck. "Alright, you can come with us."
"This is absurd," Grinham replied.
"Yes, but she had valuable intel," Helo replied. "And my child. We take her back up the base and then get a raptor or some other small craft and head back to Kobol."
"No, that's not going to work," Sharon replied. "Whatever you get is not going to be able to make the trip back to Galactica in a reasonable amount of time. I'll take a heavy raider, steal it, and use it to bring us back to Kobol. From what I understand, Galactica and her fleet are still in the vicinity of that planet, but I can't tell how long they will be there. So that's why getting there in a reasonable amount of time is paramount to your survival."
"Alright, you do that then," Helo said as she walked away.
"Well, I guess we will continue to the base," Starbuck said. The three of them got back to their vehicle and began driving away, making a wide loop around the hospital to avoid detection.
They were soon followed by a heavy raider which came by at low altitude. It waggled its wings to indicate the fact that it was friendly and followed them for the next few hours as they approached the base. There was an entrance that went right into the building and they were soon entering the code to get into. They soon made it in, and into a long set of underground tunnels that would lead them to the place that they wanted to go, their base.
Eventually, they kept on following the tunnels to the point that they found the door that led to the base. They opened it with the same code and soon found themselves in the base.
Author's note: Well, we're coming up to the conclusion of this story. Just a few more chapters, covering the end of the Kobol arc which will end with the temple. After that, there will be an epilogue that focuses on what's going on with a few other survivor groups across the colonies, mostly the ones we saw in Reap the Whirlwind along with a Cylon perspective. It's always useful to include them here and there. They always give a different perspective to the story.
