I wish you a joyful New Year! I'm excited to share another chapter of this story. As we delve into it, Rachel awakens in a room with Nyx by her side. Nyx cautions her about the individual in charge of the place she finds herself in. Let's explore and find out more.
Chapter #2 ~ The Tour
As Rachel and Nyx exited the hospital room, they strolled along the grand hallway of the castle, its walls adorned with tapestries depicting tales of ancient glory. The atmosphere shifted as they ventured further. The antiseptic aroma of the hospital gave way to an aroma of old stone and polished wood almost mangled with gravel walls.
Rachel scanned the surroundings, glancing left and right, absorbing the scenery around her. She tilted her head, keeping her hands down close together while Nyx remained focused on the walkway as the rainbowlass stayed nearby and placed her vision forward.
The duo then turned a corner, finding themselves in an incomplete ballroom. Rachel's eyes and eyebrows widened in confusion and amazement as she took in the grandeur of the cavernous space. She raised her head upward and immediately downward.
The room's towering walls reached skyward, with unfinished paintings, large, unadorned windows, and many humanoid beings and strange creatures with aprons, paint, canvas, varnish, paint brushes, clay, cups of water, rags or paper towels, drawing boards and palettes.
Sweat dripped from their heads as some noticed the robots nearby, while others took breaks to wipe their heads and drink water. While observing, she noticed teller mechs resembling Bobert but with feminine frames, sturdier legs, and a maid-like texture on their bodies. These mechs had cannons for arms, and their attention focused on the artists.
On the walls, vibrant paint splatters resembled a cosmic explosion, as if the universe itself were being born anew. Speckles of gold and silver dust shimmered, suspended in the artistic void. One painting drew the eye with its swirling vortex in cerulean blues and emerald greens. Wisps of white paint floated like ethereal spirits, hinting at a celestial dance frozen in time. A lone figure, barely outlined, reached toward the heavens, fingers stretching into the void as if desperately grasping for an elusive truth.
Adjacent to it, a canvas seemed caught in the chaos of creation. Strokes of ochre and crimson clashed with cool indigo, forming an abstract battleground of emotions. Thick coatings of impasto added tactile depth, creating a palpable tension that lingered in the air. The artist's tools lay scattered, and the brushes and palette knives abandoned mid-motion, as if the painter had momentarily stepped away from the tumultuous scene.
On another wall, the haunting visage of a spectral figure emerges, half-formed, as if caught while materializing from the abyss. Wisps of ethereal color hint at a story yet to unfold—the artist's brush frozen in mid-swirl, leaving an otherworldly aura suspended in the inky background.
Adjacent to this spectral scene, an abandoned cityscape materializes from obscurity. Its skyscrapers stretch toward the unknown. Silhouetted against the indigo sky and buildings rise and fade, as if the artist ceased their work just before revealing the secrets concealed within the urban labyrinth. The city, suspended in an eerie limbo and fire, beckons with the promise of untold stories.
Further along, a forest begins to take shape, its trees reaching upward like skeletal fingers clawing at the obsidian void. Hints of emerald and sienna suggest a forest teeming with life. Yet the shadows swallow the details, leaving the observer to imagine the creatures and mysteries that dwell within the incomplete thicket. The final artwork features a silhouette in the shape of a heart. It bore a striking resemblance to the emblem previously affixed to Bobet.
Nyx, familiar with the room, couldn't help but look down at Rachel's reaction.
"Interesting, isn't it?" Nyx remarked suddenly, her voice echoing in the vast, echoing chamber. Rachel nodded, her gaze dancing between the skeletal framework of the grand chandeliers and the intricate patterns etched into the unpolished marble floor.
Together, they began to explore the forgotten beauty of the incomplete ballroom, an unexpected detour that unveiled the hidden wonders within the castle's ancient walls. In the backdrop of the incomplete zones, a mesmerizing cinematic mural captured the enigmatic presence of a cloaked figure adorned with a heart-shaped mask, surrounded by ethereal tendrils of blazing flames.
"I supposed this is some sort of...art gallery?" The girl asked as the phantom looked at her.
"Something like that, and these artists are doing a fine job getting it done. And making sure the area has the finest detail possible." Nyx pivoted, her gaze drawn to a group of artists on a break from their canvases. Returning to Rachel, she extended her finger, gesturing downward to the floor. She nodded as she hovered above the artists.
The rainbow-haired woman watched as the materials were organized, her chin scratching and one eyebrow raised. Some bowed on their knees before her, proclaiming, "Greetings, Your Majesty," while others curved with their legs standing tall and their torsos moving up and down.
In the room, an ethereal presence lingered, almost palpable. It was as though the phantom stood among them. The unseen entity radiated soothing empathy, and an unexpected comprehension gently enveloped the artists like a calming tide.
Rachel tilted her head as her eyes fell upon the ghost near the painters.
Huh. Upon sighting the ghost, the phantom raised her hand, and a faint glow illuminated it. Objects around the artists then started to move around as if being controlled by an invisible force. The ghost was arranging the materials around it, sorting them into their respective sections as the mechs watched in awe, not daring to move their cannons.
Rachel inched towards the artwork, her eyes roaming over its details. Her curiosity guided her, prompting subtle turns of her head to absorb the surrounding elements. As she approached, her eyebrows lifted, and her eyes narrowed in response to the vivid creative expressions that unfolded before her.
The room buzzed with a silent agreement as every painter acknowledged the unspoken directive. Then, the ghostly apparition shifted her attention to the mechanical beings nearby. A once-present smile faded, replaced by crossed arms.
"Mom-Units Psi and Omega, let the painters have breaks here and there. After all, they can't rush art," Nyx declared. The robotic entities synchronized in their nod.
"Yes, Your Highness." Both mechs responded as The ghost appeared next to Rachel instantly, and she turned to see the phantom standing not far away. Nyx lifted an eyebrow, her eyes resting on the rainbow-haired girl.
"I take it you're fond of fine art?" She asked as Rachel stammered to find the right words.
"Y-Yes. It looks, uh, amazing. Yeah... I thought I would do something while I wait rather than just stand around aimlessly while you're...occupied." The rainbowlass responded as Nyx understood and nodded.
"Very well. Now, let's continue the following section," She said as the two left the area. The corridor stretched seemingly endlessly, its stone walls and tiled floors illuminated by flickering torches.
Rachel and Nyx made their way down the grand marble staircase, the sound of the rainbowlass' steps gradually being swallowed by the air outside. They stepped into the outside world, and the atmosphere shifted drastically. The ominous sky hung low, painted with a sinister palette of grey, orange, and red, casting an eerie glow over the landscape.
As Rachel wandered along, she peered up at the gigantic clouds swirling around the peak of the colossal skyscraper. Its spiky protrusions resembling stalagmites seemed to stack up like the levels of a birthday cake. Her pulse raced, and her pupils shrunk.
On closer inspection, she detected a glowing halo stemming from the further outer walls and a gentle heat surface in the atmosphere. A gentle breeze rustled around Rachel and Nyx, causing their dark locks to flutter.
As the two strolled along, they encountered a collection of statues facing each other, with a few more artists painting and sculptors almost finished with an artwork.
The courtyard, a bleak and desolate scene, was enshrouded in an everlasting gloom. The ashen sky above seemed to mirror the bleakness of the dismal ground below. Splintered cobblestones coated in a blanket of moss. The twisted branches of skeletal trees stretched like bony fingers, clawing at the air and casting eerie shadows across the courtyard.
The thin, sickly light of the wrought-iron lanterns barely penetrated the heavy mist in the air. The atmosphere was heavy with sorrow. As if the very stones beneath one's feet.
"What's this space?" Rachel and Nyx turned their heads towards her, the latter opening up the expanded center of the area.
"This is the courtyard, a central hub for this castle, and where the sculptors and artists are nearing completion of their... project," The ghost replied. The girl scanned the surroundings, noticing various openings. She raised an eyebrow, hands on her hips, before turning her attention to the towering structure and scratching her chin.
"And the tower behind us?" The rainbow-haired girl inquired as the phantom gazed at the skyscraper. The ghost sighed lightly and faced the girl again.
"That tower beneath which we stood is a testament to his might. He dubbed it his 'crowning achievement,' surpassing even New York's Empire State Building. It comprises multiple layers, and we find ourselves in the midst," Nyx explained, levitating away from the courtyard.
Rachel followed suit, breaking into a sprint. They entered the first opening ahead, stumbling upon a corridor. The girl slowed her pace cautiously as the ghost halted near some spikes. A magical aura materialized before Rachel. She gasped as it enveloped her, and in an instant, the two vanished, reappearing in another area.
A sudden flash of light illuminated the lower sections of the castle, and Rachel and Nyx appeared before another building in the vicinity. Rachel was taken aback and panting slightly. She swiftly checked her body, as there was something on it—nothing so far. Nyx gently levitated towards Rachel and placed her hand on her right shoulder. Rachel looked up at the ghost with a raised eyebrow.
"Did we just...relocate without walking?" Rachel asked, and Nyx nodded.
"Yes. I guess you never heard of magicians." She asked as she removed her hand from her shoulder, and the rainbowlass twisted her head left and right and looked downward on the ground. She scratched her head instantly.
"N-N-No... Not at all. So, where are we now?" The girl asked as she looked around, noticing something from the distance. A second wave of mechs and armored magicians appeared, silently watching, their gorgeous robes embroidered with magical symbols. The shimmering aura of their presence was a reminder of the powerful spells woven into their armor. Every mage was holding a complex staff, the end of which radiated with mystical force.
The male magicians had an aura of stoic determination, their armor decorated with intricate designs that showed off their experience in the arcane arts. In comparison, the female magicians wore garments, and each had a staff or wand that was charged with magical power, ready to be used at any time.
Next to them, a diverse army of mythical creatures stood. Mammals, avians, mechs, reptiles, rainbow-lasses similar to Rachel, amphibians, plants, bugs, magicians, objects, arachnids, humans, and many others. Throughout marching, chants screamed from their mouths as they marched with medial-inspired gear, and each had a heart symbol.
As they strode past, the soldiers noticed Nyx nearby and stood tall like any typical soldier. Some people, however, were taken aback by the rainbow, but they quickly refocused on their routine.
Every trooper stood in an expanded area, each with specific buildings designed to serve a particular task. One of the most notable elements is a moving bridge that regularly crosses the moat and may be raised or lowered to control who has access to the castle.
Another noteworthy building is an elaborate enclosure or defensive outwork protecting the castle's entrance, usually placed in front of the gatehouse. The massively fortified main entrance of the castle, which includes defensive features such as a drawbridge, portcullis, and murder holes, is located next to these aspects.
The palace is filled with well-placed turrets along the curtain walls that act as lookout posts, additional defensive positions, or homes for archers and artillery. The castle's outer walls enclose it and create a protective barrier. They're frequently reinforced with battlements to give archers an advantage.
"As you can tell, we're at the castle's frontier. And the structures are very concrete: curtain walls, towers, a gatehouse, barbicans, arrow slits or loopholes, battlements, and a drawbridge. Each played a specific role, either in terms of protection or entry, depending on the situation. Before your arrival, my "commander" faced several hardships and grew more watchful with each one. So, he set up the best possible security system using mechs, magicians, and military men." Nyx uttered as they appeared outside the castle and stood next to it. Gradually turning her head, Rachel's mouth dropped open in shock at what she saw.
The formidable castle looms with strength, its base firmly planted in the rocky landscape. A majestic moat surrounds the fortress, with crystal-clear waters at the top, cascading down from a natural spring and creating a shimmering surface that reflects the azure sky above.
As it descends, however, the moat turns into a menacing river of molten lava, a blazing inferno that swirls and churns ominously. The contrast between the tranquil water and the fiery depths creates a captivating scene, stunning and dangerous. Connected to the mountain by a series of imposing bridges, the castle stands guard at a strategic vantage point, with the dual elements of water and lava ensuring that any invaders attempt to breach its defenses.
Rachel uttered a quiet "Woah" as her eyes took on a black tint, her pupils shrunk, and her jaw dropped in awe.
"Indeed. The king was proud to have the people "help him" create this self-proclaimed masterpiece," The phantom articulated, crossing her arms and clearing her throat before looking away and closing her eyes.
"The castle is massive even from the outside! How long did it take to build?" The rainbow-haired girl asked, turning her head to the phantom, who opened her eyes and faced her again.
"It took a while, but it's exactly how he wanted it to be," Nyx replied, loosening her arms slightly. "But anyway, the tour's not done, so hold on."
A mystical energy cloaked the two of them, and in an instant, they vanished, leaving no trace of their presence.
This chapter has been quite captivating, huh? Rachel has only had a glimpse of the castle's exterior, but the following chapter will allow us to explore the palace further.
