Same Day: Secret Facility
Rick looks at Pacifica and Marcy. They say nothing. They look at Rick, and the look in their eyes says that they agree with Steven about taking SHIELD down completely in order to end HYDRA forever. Rick looks at Mordecai.
Mordecai tells Rick gently, "Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower."
Rick looks at Mabel. She stands firmly beside Steven. He knows she agrees with Steven 100%. Rick looks at Steven and scoffs quietly and softly, knowing he's defeated, "Well..." He shares a look with Tambry one more time. She doesn't back down. Rick sighs and leans back in his chair as he reluctantly gives up the fight, "It looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain." Steven stands tall and determined, thinking about getting his best friends back and taking down HYDRA once and for all.
Minutes Later: Another Room
Mabel is alone in another room, sitting on the floor, going through her stuff. Pacifica walks by and notices her. She walks closer and startles Mabel as she speaks up.
Pacifica states with a smirk, "I think that's about the seventh time you checked your bag in the last 20 minutes or so."
Mabel barely glances at Pacifica, "Just making sure I have everything."
Pacifica nods, "You could continue doing that, or you can tell me what's bothering you." She stands in front of Mabel, looking down at her.
Mabel stops and looks at Pacifica, shrugging after a second. She lies, "Nothing's bothering me."
Pacifica shakes her head, "I swear it's like all the Pines are stubborn." She leans forward a bit, "And they are terrible at hiding their emotions." Mabel sighs, annoyed, and Pacifica stands straight, "It's about Steven, isn't it?" Mabel stays quiet, and Pacifica continues, "The fact that his old girlfriend is back from the dead, and you're wondering where that leaves you two together?"
Mabel looks at Pacifica in confusion, "What are yo-"
Pacifica interrupts knowingly, "I know about you and Steven." Mabel looks at her questioningly with a slight panic in her eyes. Pacifica tells her, "I knew you two would be together sometime soon..." She crosses her arms and tilts her head a bit, "And... I kind of heard you two the other day at Mordecai's place."
Mabel nods and looks down as she mutters sarcastically, "Of course you did." Mabel looks at Pacifica, "How much did you hear?"
Pacifica shrugs as she shakes her head a bit, "Not much, just that you want whatever you two have to stay quiet. And there was a lot of loud smooching sounds." She talks about how loud Steven and Mabel kiss.
Mabel looks at Pacifica with wide eyes, "It wasn't that loud."
Pacifica chuckles as she nods her head, "Yes, it was."
Mabel shakes her head in denial, "I don't believe you." Pacifica shrugs, not going to argue with Mabel but knowing that she, herself, is right. Mabel turns more serious as she looks down, thinking, "You're right. It's bothering me, knowing that Steven will go running back to Connie the first chance he gets." Mabel looks down as she cries quietly.
Pacifica sits beside Mabel on her right, assuring her, "He won't." Mabel looks at her with tears coming down her eyes, "And you know why?" Mabel shakes her head, "It's because he loves you." Pacifica nods her head a bit, "Yes, Connie is his first love, but Steven has you now. He would do anything to protect you and to make sure you're okay and happy, just like you have been doing for him since you met him." Mabel sniffles as she listens intently, "You have been there to help him, teach him, and guide him in this new modern world. You have had his back, just as he had yours." Pacifica leans closer to Mabel, "Trust me. Steven won't walk away from the bond you guys share that easily, especially now, since you both took the next level and began a romantic relationship."
Mabel sniffles again, fiddling with her fingers, feeling better, and assures, "Really?"
Pacifica comfortably wraps her left arm around Mabel, "Positive." She smiles at Mabel, who wipes her tears and smiles back. Pacifica then brings Mabel in for a hug.
After a few moments, Pacifica and Mabel pull away. Mabel asks Pacifica curiously, "Was the smooching sound that loud?"
Pacifica laughs and nods as she stands up, making Mabel smile slightly. She leans down towards Mabel and whispers loudly, "Oh yeah." Mabel's lips are pressed together, nodding in appearance at the answer, and Pacifica pats Mabel's shoulder twice before she walks away.
Mabel looks after Pacifica for a second, her smile disappearing. Looking down, she shakes her head. Despite what Pacifica said, the Connie and Steven situation still bothers her, as do many other things going on at that moment. She goes back and finishes packing her bag.
Night: Bedroom
In the middle of the night, Steven is sleeping. He rolls over the bed and reaches his arm over. He wakes up in confusion as he finds the place next to his empty. He narrows his eyes, gets out of bed, and walks out of the room.
Open Spaced Area
Steven walks around and comes to a semi-lit area to find Mabel sitting on a stool at a table with her damaged/broken suit chest piece on the table. He stops and watches as she slowly takes out the broken Arc Reactor and sets it on the table. She leans down and narrows her eyes as she studies the broken part, her not noticing him yet.
Steven smiles faintly before walking towards Mabel. He softly grabs her attention, "Hey."
Mabel looks up at Steven, "Hey."
Steven asks Mabel as he reaches the table, standing across from her, "What are you doing up?"
Mabel grabs the reactor and twists the protectant off as she answers, "I couldn't sleep."
Steven says, sitting on the stool, "With the day we had, I'm surprised you're not out like a light. But, then again, I'm not."
Mabel looks at Steven, knowing he's talking about the times when she wouldn't sleep for days, and when she slept, she would have nightmares, "Why are you up?" She uses tweezers to move some pieces around the inside of the reactor, trying to see if it's flexible.
Steven shrugs, "Got lonely in bed." He smiles faintly at Mabel, who smiles softly back. Steven looks down at what she's doing and tells her softly, "Come on, come back to bed."
Mabel tells Steven, "In a bit, I want to see if this is fixable." She focuses on the reactor.
Steven asks Mabel curiously, "And is it?"
Mabel presses her lips together, takes a second as she debates in her head, and she shakes her head, "I don't think so. The reactor's crushed." She leans up, standing straight, sighing in frustration as she puts down the tweezers and uses a rag to clean her hands. Steven watches silently as Mabel leans her elbows down on the table, rubbing her face in her hands, stressed.
Steven asks Mabel knowingly, "Mabel, what's really wrong?"
Mabel puts her hands down and looks at Steven, who looks at her, waiting for the answer. Mabel shakes her head, "Nothing, Steven. We should go back to bed." Mabel leans back up and walks around the table to leave, but Steven softly grabs her right hand, stopping her, and he gently pulls her closer to him.
Steven wraps his arms loosely around Mabel's waist. She slides her hands up his chest to his shoulders and wraps her arms loosely around his neck, looking down and not at Steven, who leans his head down a bit to look at Mabel's eyes. He whispers, "Hey, tell me what's wrong?"
Mabel sighed and looked Steven in the eyes, "I'm... I'm just afraid of losing you. Even though I just got you. I'm afraid of losing you to..." She trails off, not wanting to tell him.
Steven finishes for Mabel as he realizes, "To Connie?" Mabel shamefully nods.
Mabel points out the truth and obvious, "She's your first love. It only makes sense that you both, you know..." She trails off, saying that it only makes sense that Steven and Connie get back together now that Steven knows Connie's alive. Mabel looks at Steven. His expression is of mixed emotions. She realizes how bad and selfish she sounds and pulls away as she steps back, rants, "I'm sorry, I'm being selfish-"
Steven interrupts Mabel, "You're not." Mabel looks at him in disbelief. Steven assures her, "Trust me, you're not." He pulls her closer again by the hips, "I completely understand where you're coming from." He nods his head, "Yes, it was a big shock to find out that my two best friends are alive. But..." He looks at her intently, "I wouldn't have agreed to this if I wasn't fully ready and moved on from the last person I was with." He's talking about their new relationship.
Mabel looks at Steven and argues, "Steven, this isn't just anybody. This woman is the love of your life."
Steven nods with his eyebrows raised, not looking at Mabel, "I know, and she will always have a place in my heart, but-" He looks at her lovingly, "-I want to be with you."
Mabel fiddles with Steven's shirt, looking vulnerable as she stares at his shirt, "Really?"
Steven pulls Mabel closer, wrapping his arms around her waist, pressing his lips against hers for a soft, promise kiss. He pulls away, whispering to her lips, "Really. I love you." Mabel leans her forehead against Steven's. It's silent for a bit, before Steven breaks it, asking her knowingly, "You still have your doubts, don't you?"
Mabel tells Steven truthfully, "Yes." Steven leans back a bit playfully, and Mabel wraps her arms around his neck, "But it's not stopping me from loving you." Mabel presses her lips against Steven. They kiss passionately. Mabel suddenly pulls away, her eyebrows narrowing as she realizes, "That is loud." She talks about how Pacifica mentioned that her kiss with Steven makes a loud smooching sound. Steven looks at her in confusion and goes to ask her about it, and Mabel shakes her head, telling him, "It's nothing." She pulls Steven's head closer and crashes her lips against his for a passionate kiss.
After a few moments, the kiss gets heated, and Steven stands as he leans down and lifts Mabel up by the thighs, carrying her back to their bed, where they spend part of their night, proving to one another how much they love each other.
Morning: Bridge
Steven stands on a bridge by the Dam, looking out in the distance with his hands in his pant pockets. He's thinking about his two best friends from the time he spent with Lars, Connie, and Sadie after Steven's mother's funeral before the serum.
Flashback: 1940's, Brooklyn, New York
A small-looking Steven, Connie, Sadie, and Lars were walking up the stairs towards Steven's apartment before Steven and Connie lived together.
Connie says, "We looked for you after."
Lars says, "My folks wanted to give you a ride from the cemetery."
Steven looks sad, his hands in his pockets. He tells them, "I know. I'm sorry. I just... kind of wanted to be alone."
Sadie asks Steven softly as they reach his floor, "How was it?"
Steven answers as he walks towards his apartment door with the three following, "It was okay. She's next to Dad."
Lars starts, "I was gonna ask..."
Steven tells Lars, "I know what you're gonna say, Lars." Lars raises his eyebrows, knowing he will get this reaction/answer, "I just..." Steven trails off as he reaches his apartment door and checks his pockets.
