Chapter 11: The Golden Wolf.
After being checked over a few times by Madam Pomfrey, then told he had to stay in the Hospital Wing as a precaution, Harry sat in the bed watching the people around him talking; everyone was surprised about what had happened and what Professor Ikol had done, though Harry was thankful that she saved him, he couldn't figure out how she had done it. Oliver Wood was off somewhere pouting about losing the match.
"Did anyone see where my Nimbus went when I fell?" Harry asked. Ron and Hermione glanced at each other, giving Harry a bad feeling. "What?"
"When you fell off, it got blown away," Hermione said.
"And?"
"And it hit the Whomping Willow," Hermione said.
"I just bought that broom." Harry groaned, running his hand through his hair, he was letting it grow out since he wouldn't be risking Petunia's disapproval for doing so, and now his hair was starting to curl at the ends.
Not long after that, Madam Pomfrey made them all leave so that Harry could get rest; he lay there in the hospital bed staring off in a daze, thinking about the screams he kept hearing and a voice telling Lily to run, a cruel laugh, then a different voice pleading not to kill Harry; he knew who those voices belong to, his parents, Lily and James Potter, the only family Harry had died before he was old enough to remember them. Dumbledore had called Harry to his office a couple of days ago and said the Dursleys still refused to take Harry back, and when school was over for the summer, Harry would start spending his summers at the Burrow. A part of him was happy about that, but on the other hand, the Dursleys, no matter how awful they were to him, were the only family he had, and to know they didn't want him was hurtful. Harry had thought he would have felt happier at the news. But hearing the sounds of his parents dying was a big reminder that he had no family and no real home.
Harry lay there feeling unhappy when the hospital door opened, and footsteps were heading towards him; suddenly, Jinx jumped on his bed and started licking his face, causing his glasses to go lopsided.
"Jinx, stop." Harry laughed, trying to push him back, and fixing his glasses, as Professor Ikol stepped up to them and helped Harry pull Jinx off him.
"Stop, that is disgusting." Professor Ikol ordered, and Jinx stopped and flopped down next to Harry; Professor Ikol turned back to him. "How do you feel?"
"I'm fine," replied Harry as he petted Jinx. "Thanks for saving me; I have no idea how you did it, though."
"I am glad I was there." Professor Ikol replied.
Harry thought about asking how she stood in the air throwing green light but figured if she wanted Harry to know, she would've told him. After a few more minutes of talking, Professor Ikol left, and Jinx stayed with Harry to watch over him. Professor Ikol told him not to worry because he would be the only one who could see him, so there was no risk of getting into trouble with Madam Pomfrey. Harry had no idea if Professor Ikol was telling the truth, but Jinx stayed with him all night and throughout Sunday, and Harry had a stream of visitors, and none of them seemed to notice Jinx lying next to him. Sunday evening, Madam Pomfrey released Harry in time for him to have dinner in the Great Hall; that's when Jinx left his side, running to Professor Ikol the moment they entered the hall, and when she left five minutes later, Professor Ikol had a large grin on her face. Jinx was walking alongside her, tail wagging happily.
Unfortunately, when Monday morning came around, Harry was annoyed to discover his first-class right after breakfast was double potions; two hours with Snape wasn't Harry's ideal way to start a Monday morning or any morning. They were making a new potion today, a Shrinking Solution; everyone was quietly doing their work, then Draco Malfoy showed up to class twenty minutes late and started sitting his cauldron up next to Ron and Harry's; Snape didn't even reprimand him for being late, just warned him not to let it happen again. Harry did his best to ignore Malfoy while he made his potion. And it was successful until about forty minutes before class was over, and Malfoy decided to try and get Harry angry.
"I hear you are friends with Ikol," Malfoy said.
"So? What's it to you?" Harry demanded.
"Oh, nothing; I just thought I'd mention she probably won't be here much longer." Malfoy smirked, "Father is going to the school governors and making a complaint."
"Big deal," Harry said, "He complained about Hagrid; he's still here. Professor Ikol hasn't done anything. I will speak on her behalf if I have to."
"She teaches lies." Malfoy snarled.
"Really? You lived back then, did you?" Harry demanded, "So, you know what happened in those days?"
"Orange, Longbottom," Snape said from behind them; Harry, Ron, and Malfoy turned around to look. "Tell me, boy, does anything penetrate your thick skull? What do I have to do to make you understand, Longbottom?"
"Please, sir," Hermione pleaded, "please, I could help Neville put it right."
"I don't remember asking you to show off, Miss Granger," Snape said coldly, and Hermione's face turned pink. "Longbottom, at the end of this lesson, we will feed a few drops of this potion to your toad and see what happens. Perhaps that will encourage you to do it properly."
Snape moved away, leaving Neville breathless with fear. Hermione started muttering instructions to him out of the corner of her mouth so that Snape wouldn't see. Harry and Ron packed away their unused ingredients and went to wash their hands and ladles in the stone basin in the corner.
Toward the end of class, Snape strode over to Neville, who was cowering by his cauldron. Snape made the class watch as he took Neville's pet toad, Trever, and fed him some of Neville's Shrinking Solution with a small spoon. There was a moment of silence in which Trevor gulped; then, there was a small pop, and Trevor the tadpole was wriggling in Snape's palm. The Gryffindors burst into applause. Snape, looking sour, pulled a small bottle from the pocket of his robe, poured a few drops on top of Trevor reappeared fully grown.
"Five points from Gryffindor," said Snape, which wiped the smiles from every face. "I told you not to help him, Miss Granger. Class dismissed."
When Harry walked into History of Magic class fifteen minutes later, the first thing he noticed was Professor Ikol standing in the front of the room with a smile on her face and Jinx curled up in her chair at the front of the room, the second thing Harry noticed was the desk had rolls of parchment and bottles of different colors of ink setting on them.
"Well, you all look like you've had a great morning." Professor Ikol remarked, her smile slipping a little as she saw the annoyed looks on their faces.
"We just left potions," Harry explained, "And Snape took five points because Hermione helped Neville get his potion right."
"Did he?" Professor Ikol asked. "Well, we'll have to fix that; twenty points to Gryffindor because I'm in a good mood. Oh, though, I guess we need a real reason; Hermione and Neville worked together as a team; there you go, there's the reason."
That put a smile on the Gryffindor's faces as they looked at one another in surprise. That was the first time Professor Ikol had ever given anyone points. She never seemed to care for the system and only congratulated those who did well or told off those that misbehaved, and a few times she's given students detentions."
"Now, I'm sure you Gryffindors are wondering about the parchment and ink; well, because of my good mood, I decided to give my students a break today and give you an easy assignment, draw a picture of Yggdrasil you have until the end of class to get it done." Professor Ikol said. "Make it colorful; that's what the different colors of ink are for."
Professor Ikol had Jinx move over and sit down next to him, then waved her hand and had an illusion of the Yggdrails tree appear.
"So you can have a better view of the tree to draw it." Professor Ikol explained, "Don't forget to add Niohoggr, gnawing on the roots."
"Professor," Hermione raised her hand. "You have never explained what or who Niohoggr is?"
"Well, there isn't much to tell; Niohoggr is a dragon that lives on the roots of the Yggdrasil tree, gnawing on them." Professor Ikol explained.
"Ma'am," Harry raised his hand.
"Yes, Harry." Professor Ikol called on him, smiling at his politeness.
"Doesn't the roots keep the tree alive?" Harry asked, "And if he eats on the roots won't the tree die? And then the nine realms?"
"Probably. The root Niohoggr gnaws on has struggled to keep itself strong for as long as the dragon has been chewing on it; I wouldn't worry. The tree has survived for thousands of years, and I'm sure it'll survive for thousands more." Professor Ikol said.
There were no more questions as the students started drawing the tree; though Dean Thomas has always been the artist in Gryffindor, Harry was decent at it, and after getting done with his drawing, he was satisfied with his results. When Professor Ikol got up and walked around the tables checking everyone's drawings, she graded them and moved on to the next student, but when she got to Harry's drawing, she asked if he minded if she kept it. He shrugged and said sure.
They headed outside for their next class, Care of Magical Creatures; Ron wasn't happy with having another one with the Slytherins so soon, and Hagrid's classes had become less exciting since Fudge had given Hagrid that warning, and they were now all tasked with keeping something called Flobberworms alive; Harry was sure they had to be a magical creature more interesting than this that wasn't dangerous. Last week Harry had the chance to ask Hagrid if he knew of blue skin, red eye magical creatures; unfortunately, Hagrid hadn't heard of any, and Hermione hadn't found anything in the library either.
After Care of Magical Creatures, it was time for lunch. Since they didn't have Defense Against the Dark Arts this week, Harry told Hermione and Ron to go on to lunch, and he'll meet them there in a moment. He headed to the defense classroom, hoping to catch Lupin before he headed to the Great Hall for lunch because Harry didn't want anyone to overhear what he wanted to ask him. When Harry got close to the classroom, he saw Fred and George leaving the room with annoyed looks on their faces and didn't notice Harry as they passed; the door was left open, and Harry saw Professor Lupin standing by his desk, holding what looked like a beat up old piece of parchment, with a look as if he was looking at a long lost friend.
"Professor, " Harry said, lightly knocking on the door; Lupin looked up, startled a moment, then smiled.
"Ah, Harry, what can I do for you?" Lupin asked, sticking the parchment in the pocket of his robes.
"I wanted to ask if you can teach me how to keep the dementors away from me," Harry asked. "A spell or something that I can use to protect myself?"
"I know of one spell, but it's very advanced, and I'm no expert," Lupin replied.
"Please," Harry asked, "Can we try? If the dementors come to the next match."
"Alright, we can try, but I warn you, the spell, as I said, is very advanced; you may not even be able to do it," Lupin replied.
"I understand, sir," Harry said. "When?"
"Thursday evening, at eight o'clock, meet me in the History of Magic classroom; it should be big enough. Meanwhile, I'll have to figure out what we can use for a dementor since I can't bring a real one into the castle." Lupin replied.
"Sir, shouldn't we ask Professor Ikol before using her classroom?" Harry asked.
"I'll ask her if you want, but I know she won't mind," Lupin said.
Tuesday, Harry's first class of the morning, was Transfigurations; they had moved on from animagi to transferring mice into goblets; Lavender Brown had squealed when Professor McGogongall pulled out the cage of mice which caused Professor McGogongall to snap at her. Hermione transfigured her mouse into a goblet on the first try, it took Harry a couple of shots to get it, and Ron was able to after about seven attempts. At one point, Parvati's mouse got away from her, and she spent the rest of class chasing it all over the classroom, trying to catch it.
The rest of the week went by quickly, and before Harry knew it, he was heading down to the History of Magic classroom for his first Dementor lessons. Upon entering the room, Harry was surprised to find not only Remus Lupin but Professor Ikol and Jinx.
"Good evening, Harry." Professor Lupin greeted, "Professor Ikol here has agreed to help out with your lessons by casting an illusion of a dementor for you to practice on."
"Okay," Harry said, trying to sound as though he wasn't apprehensive; Professor Ikol's illusions were awfully realistic.
"So..." Lupin had taken out his wand and indicated that Harry should do the same. "The spell I will teach you is highly advanced magic, Harry, well beyond ordinary wizarding level. It is called the Patronus Charm."
"I'm sure Harry can do it, Remus." Professor Ikol spoke up.
"Hopefully, you are right," Lupin replied.
"How does it work?" Harry asked.
"Well, when it works correctly, It conjures up a Patronus," Lupin explained, "which is a kind of anti-dementor, a guardian that acts as a shield between you and the dementor. The Patronus is a kind of positive force, a projection of the very things that the dementor feeds upon, hope, happiness, and the desire to survive, but it cannot feel despair, as real humans can, so the dementors can't hurt it."
Harry listened closely to Lupin's explanation and suddenly thought about how Jinx had protected him from Buckbeak and pictured a giant dog-like creature standing between him and a dementor.
"I must warn you, Harry." Lupin continued, "that the charm might be too advanced for you. Many qualified wizards have difficulty with it."
"What does a Patronus look like?" Harry asked curiously.
"Each one is unique to the wizard who conjures it," Lupin replied.
"And how do you conjure it?" Harry asked.
"With an incantation, which will only work if you are concentrating, with all your might, on a very happy memory," Lupin explained.
Harry frowned, searching his memories for one that would be happy enough. Nothing that had happened to him at the Dursleys' was going to do as he thought about his life with them, which was unpleasant for the most part and left Harry feeling upset and angry. And as if Jinx could sense Harry's thoughts, he started growling, and both Professor Ikol and Lupin looked at him in surprise before Harry decided to use when he first rode a broom. And the happy feeling he got from flying.
"Okay, I think I got it," Harry said.
"The incantation is this." Lupin cleared his throat. "Expecto patronum!"
"Expecto patronum, " Harry repeated under his breath, "expecto patronum."
"Are you concentrating hard on your happy memory?" Lupin asked
"Oh, yeah," said Harry, quickly forcing his thoughts back to that first broom ride. "expecto patronum," A shimmering golden light wooshed out of Harry's wand for a moment.
"Did you see that?" Harry said excitedly. "Something happened!"
"Very good," said Lupin, smiling. "Though, it's usually sliver. Right, then ready to try it on a dementor?"
"Yes," Harry said, gripping his wand very tightly and moving into the middle of the classroom.
"Professor Ikol, if you will, please," Lupin said; Professor Ikol waved her hand, and her green magic formed the illusion of a dementor that came at Harry; he suddenly felt fear and backed up a little while trying to raise his wand.
"Expecto patronum!" Harry said. "Expecto patronum! Expecto."
But the golden light didn't come from his wand this time, as screams filled Harry's head, the cries of his parents getting murdered by Voldemort.
"Harry!" He heard Professor Ikol calling him, and his eyes snapped open. Harry was lying flat on his back on the floor. The illusion of the Dementor was gone, and Professor Ikol was kneeling next to him with Jinx next to her. Harry didn't have to ask what had happened.
"Sorry," he muttered, sitting up, and Professor Ikol stood and helped Harry to his feet.
"Are you all right?" Asked Lupin.
"Yes," Harry replied while frowning at his hands. "I didn't turn blue that time."
"It's because you were not in real danger." Professor Ikol said, "Your mind might have been tricked" She gently tapped Harry's forehead, "But whatever triggers your Jotunn form knew you weren't actually in danger."
"Jotunn?" Harry asked. Finally, did someone know what creature genes he had?
"Yes, you have Jotunn blood in you. That's why your skin turns blue and your eyes red when you are in danger; your body is shifting into that form to protect itself." Professor Ikol explained. "Jotunn is a race of beings from Jotunheim; we haven't gotten that far in class yet. Asgard isn't the only realm that used to visit Midgard. There was a time all the realms would mix and mingle together."
"Here." Lupin handed him a Chocolate Frog. "Eat this before we try again. I didn't expect you to do it your first time; in fact, I would have been astounded if you had."
"You might want to choose a different happy memory to concentrate on; that one didn't seem strong enough." Professor Ikol suggested.
Harry thought hard and decided his feelings when Gryffindor had won the House Championship last year qualified as happy. He gripped his wand tightly again and took up his position in the middle of the classroom.
"Ready?" Professor Ikol asked, raising her hands.
"Ready," said Harry. A green swirl of light once again made a dementor in front of Harry; he took a deep breath, pointed his wand at it, opened his mouth, and the screams were in his head again, followed by laughter.
"Harry, wake up." Lupin's voice cut through the screams; Harry was once again lying on the floor. "Harry, perhaps we should leave it here for tonight. This charm is ridiculously advanced."
"No!" said Harry. He got up again. "I'll have one more go. I'm not thinking of happy enough things; that's what it is. Hang on." He racked his brains and decided on the day he discovered he was a wizard.
"Ready?" said Lupin, who looked as though he were doing this against his better judgment, and Professor Ikol hesitated before making another illusion of a dementor.
"Expecto Patronum!" Harry yelled, ignoring the screaming in his head. A shimmering golden shadow came bursting out of the end of Harry's wand to hover between him and the dementor.
"Excellent!" Lupin cheered. "Excellent, Harry. That was definitely a start."
"Can we have another go? Just one more?" Harry asked.
"No," Professor Ikol said, her tone stern. "You have had enough for one night." Jinx barked as if agreeing. "I want you to go to your dorm and get some rest."
"Yes, ma'am," Harry replied; he stood there staring at Professor Ikol in surprise and wondering if she had kids of her own because she sounded a lot like Mrs. Wesaley telling off Fred and George right then.
"Here," Professor Lupin said, handing Harry more chocolate, an amused look on his face. Harry headed to Gryffindor Tower as he ate the chocolate; when he arrived, Ron and Hermione were arguing over Cockshanks going after Scabbers when Neville forgot to close the dorm door, where Ron had been keeping Scabbers in an unbreakable cage Percy gave him because Crookshanks wouldn't leave him alone, it was for the rat's protection, and their dorm mates were supposed to make sure they kept the door closed so that no cats could get in, but Neville has always been forgetful.
Harry, not wanting to get in the middle of another role between Ron and Hermione, headed up to the dorm and lay down in his bed, and fell right to sleep.
Friday morning, Harry felt someone shaking him awake; Harry groaned and opened his eyes to see Oliver Wood standing over him.
"Come on, Harry, practice before classes start," Oliver said.
"What time is it?" Harry demanded, raising a little.
"Almost six o'clock, now, get up and get dressed. If Slytherin losses to Ravenclaw this weekend, we are still in the running for the cup," Oliver said.
Harry got up, put on his glass, changed into his Quidditch robes, and made his way out onto the pitch as the sun was rising. Oliver gave one of his pep talks and then let out the snitch, and the practice began; using a school broom, Harry flew around the field looking for and catching the snitch, while his teammates kept complaing about how early it was, how it was barely light out and that it was too cold. At some point, Fred and George had sat on the benches to take a break and ended up leaning against each other asleep. Oliver grumbled about it for a moment before leaving them and returning to practice.
By the time Oliver let everyone stop, the sun had long been up, and the team was complaing about being frozen to their brooms. Harry had just enough time to get a quick shower and hurry to have a quick breakfast before his first class.
The following day (Saturday, October 27th) was their first Hogsmeade weekend. Professor McGonagall accepted Harry's permission with a promise he would stick to Ron and Hermione, not go off alone, and keep to the crowds blending in. Hermione, worried about Sirius Black, made Harry take his Invisibility Cloak. If they saw Black anywhere, she wanted Harry to get under his cloak and run back to the castle. Jinx walked them to the castle's front doors and then sat there watching them walk toward Hogsmeade. Harry kept a tight hold on his wand as he passed through the front gate; thankfully, they didn't do anything as Harry walked by and headed to the village.
"There is something weird about Jinx." Ron voiced, and not for the first time.
"Oh, not this again," Hermione said, "Jinx is an intelligent dog. That's all."
"I'm telling you, he's far too intelligent to be just a dog," Ron said.
Harry ignored them as he took in the sights of the village; it had been a constant argument between Hermione and Ron; for some reason, Ron had it in his head that Jinx wasn't a dog, but an animagus, an Auror who the ministry had sent to keep an eye on Harry until they caught Sirius Black and Hermione thought the idea was utterly ridiculous. Still, her theory that Ikol and Lupin were secretly a couple was just as absurd in Harry's opinion. He couldn't figure out where Hermione got that idea, yeah, Lupin and Ikol seemed to be around each other a lot, but sometimes Harry got the impression they were barely friends, and sometimes it felt like they merely tolerated each other; however, Harry never voiced this to Hermione; he rather not argue over something that wasn't their business anyway.
Once they started going into the shops, Ron and Hermione's argument immediately stopped as they looked at everything; they all bought a bunch of sweets and chocolates from Honeydukes, and Harry and Ron purchased a couple of things from Zonko's joke shop; they checked out the post office, had a butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks, and before heading back to the castle, Hermione wanted to go into one more shop. While she was looking around, Harry noticed a handmade leather-bound journal that had a wolf on the front cover, with emerald eyes, in a glass case next to two and decided to buy it for Professor Ikol as a thank you for saving his life.
When Harry arrived back at the castle for dinner, Professor Ikol wasn't in the Great Hall, and she didn't make an appearance on Sunday at any mealtimes, and Jinx had disappeared also. So, Monday morning, Harry left breakfast a few minutes early to give her the journal before his Defense Against the Dark Arts class and her first class. Professor Ikol was surprised but seemed happy to see Harry, and when he handed her the journal and explained why he bought it for her, she looked at it in shock as she ran her hand across the cover.
"I hope you like it," Harry said nervously, "I know you like snakes, but they didn't have one with a snake, and wolves are cool, right? They're close to a dog, and you adore Jinx." Professor Ikol laughed, holding it to her.
"I'll cherish it. Harry, thank you." Professor Ikol reached forward and hugged Harry; to his shock, her hug felt so motherly it made him yearn for his mother. When they pulled apart, Harry looked around.
"Where's Jinx?" Harry asked. He didn't understand why Professor Ikol had such a reaction to him giving her a gift, so he changed the subject.
"He's keeping Remus company today." Professor Ikol said as her class started walking into the room. "You better run along. You're going to be late for class."
When Harry turned to leave, he noticed Professor Ikol's first class was Slytherins. When Harry passed Draco Malfoy on his way to the door, Malfoy purposely bumped into him, which got him detention from Professor Ikol for what she said was assaulting a fellow student. When Harry made it to Defense Against the Dark Arts, he was seven minutes late and Snape, not Lupin, was in the room, meaning Jinx wasn't there either.
"But, Sir, we aren't ready to start werewolves today," Hermione said as Harry entered the room.
"Granger, I was under the impression I am teaching this class, not you; now, turn to page 394," Snape said. "Twenty points, Potter, for being late."
"Why are you here?" Harry demanded, "Where is Professor Lupin?"
"That isn't your concern, Potter," Snape said. "Now, sit down before I take another twenty points."
Harry glared at Snape, walked over, and sat in the empty chair next to Neville, sat his bag on the floor and, pulled out his defense book on the desk, then took his glasses off to wipe them on the sleeve of his robes.
"Now that you finally decided to show up for class, Potter, turn to page 394," Snape said.
"Finally?" Harry asked, glaring up at Snape. "I was less than ten minutes late."
Snape strode angrily toward him, put his hands on his desk, and leaned forward, "You just lost another twenty points for Gryffindor, Potter; one more word, and I'm going to have to ask you to leave the classroom."
Harry narrowed his eyes at Snape but said nothing, so he straightened up and went to turn away when Harry ran his hand through his hair; the action made Snape pause, then he spun back around and stared at Harry, his black eyes searching his face as if truly looking at him for the first time; Harry (glasses still off) stared right back at him, in confusion as Snape's usually emotionless face took on an expression that was somewhat between disbelief and disgust, the class started mumbling amongst each other and looking towards them confused, and Harry began to feel uncomfortable.
"Umm, are you alright there, Snape?" Harry asked; he probably should have put professor before his name because Snape's facial expression changed to an angry one because of Harry's disrespect, and he pointed toward the door.
"OUT!" Snape screamed so loud the entire class jumped, and poor Neville fell out of his seat. Harry decided it would be best not to argue as he put his glasses back on, put his book back in his bag, then hurried out of the classroom.
Professor Lupin reappeared on Wednesday, just in time for Halloween; he sat next to Professor Ikol during the Halloween feast. Jinx went back and forth between them and Harry while Snape sat and glared at everyone. The next night Harry's dementor lessons continued, and he once again wasn't doing more than just making the shimmering gold shadow and ending up on the floor.
"Harry, we've been doing this for over an hour now; I don't think you should continue tonight." Professor Lupin said. "You have made good progress.."
"Progress?" Harry demanded. "It's just light; it's not even taken shape."
"You are thirteen years old, Harry, " Professor Lupin said, "There are grown wizards who can't even do these spells at all; the fact you can do what you can is impressive; you are a powerful wizard for your age."
"Impressive isn't going to keep the dementors away," Harry said.
"Okay, Harry, you can try one more time, but you're going to rest first." Professor Ikol broke into their argument; she grabbed Harry's arm and pulled him to the middle of the rug. "Set," she pointed down, and Harry did so. "Cross your legs." Harry listened, and Professor Ikol sat in front of him, took his hands, and laid them on his legs, with the palms upward, as Jinx lay beside him. "Close your eyes, clear your mind of all thought and take deep breaths in and out."
Harry did what Professor Ikol said and soon felt relaxed; after a moment, it felt like the room had melted away, and he was floating on air.
"Now, think of your magic; pull it to the surface; we are magical beings; magic keeps us going, makes us happy, helps us relax, makes us unique; our bodies rely on it." Professor Ikol explained as Harry did what she said, "Very good."
"Umm, Professor," Lupin said, sounding concerned, and Jinx barked. If Harry had his eyes open right now, he would see a gold light coming from his fingertips.
"Listen to Jinx, Remus; Harry is fine; it's just his magic." Professor Ikol said, "Harry, with your permission, I would like to dig into your memories and pull forth all your happy ones; I will do my best not to pay too close attention to them, and if you wish, I won't mention anything I might see."
After slightly hesitating, Harry agreed, and Professor Ikol put her palm on his forehead. Harry saw flashes of his life fly by through his eyelids, then, little by little, his bad memories were pushed to the side, and his good, happy memories started running through his mind, starting at the very first thing he could remember, him as a toddler taking his first steps toward a slightly familiar man, but he wasn't James Potter. Someone he didn't know, and the reason it made Harry feel happy was that the man was so happy about Harry walking to him, his dark grey eyes lit up, and a wide grin appeared on his face. Then the memory was gone, and a few other memories went by, some with his parents and who must be their friends, and the grey eye man was almost always there, picking Harry up, giving him toys and sweets, and getting down on the floor to play with him. Then Harry's most recent memories appeared. He saw being at the zoo with the Dursley, talking to the snake, meeting Ron, making friends with Hermione, winning his first Quidditch match, then Ron and the twins rescuing Harry in their dad's flying car. His happy memories ended with his hug from Professor Ikol just last week.
"Okay, Harry, I want you to open your eyes and stand." Professor Ikol sounded shaken up as Harry stood, "Let me see your wand." Harry handed it to her.
"Harry can't do the spell without his wand." Professor Lupin said.
"Nonsense, that wand holds you back. A good amount of your magic goes into it when you do a spell, making it weaker. I believe it's why Harry isn't having any luck with getting a form with his Patronus." Professor Ikol said, "Are you ready to try."
"Yes, ma'am," Harry replied, and Professor Ikol had Harry hold his arm out with his palm open.
"Think of every happy memory that went through your mind, and concentrate on the ones that made you feel the happiest, then when I make a dementor appear, call out the spell while focusing on your magic." Professor Ikol said.
Harry did what Professor Ikol said and was able to allow his happy memories to fly through his mind again as he felt his magic coming to the surface, mainly concentrating on the memories of the mysterious grey eye man because he was always so nice to Harry, and genuinely cared about him, and that made Harry feel happiest.
"Ready, sweetheart?" Professor Ikol asked; Harry nodded, and suddenly, there was a dementor floating towards him, keeping his mind on his memories and his focus on his magic; Harry felt no fear as he yelled out.
"Expecto patronum,"
A gold light burst out of Harry's palm, almost lighting up the room, as a shimmering golden wolf formed and chanced down the illusion dementor, before it disappeared in a green light, then the wolf turned and looked toward Harry, before it too disappeared.
Jinx barked happily, circling Harry, who smiled big; he had done it.
"Well, done, Harry." Professor Lupin cheered, patting Harry on the back.
"I knew you could do it." Professor Ikol said, throwing her arm around Harry's shoulder and pulling him to her; Jinx had stopped circling and now stood on Harry's other side with one paw on Harry's leg. Harry decided then, next time, he needed to cast a Patronus to add this moment to his happy memories.
AN With Harry's glasses off and not covering part of his face and with him running his hand through his hair, something Snape had seen Sirius do when they were younger, at that moment Snape realized that Harry looks more like Sirius Black than James Potter, and still believing Lily is his mother, his mind is thinking things he doesn't like.
According to Google, October 29th, 2012 was a full Moon and a Monday, so Lupin was a bit weak and getting prepared for that night's full moon, which was why he was not in class, and Sirius was helping him and keeping him company.
Harry's magic is gold, and since he's half-God, his Patronus is the color of his magic; sorry if that doesn't make sense; I just thought a shimmering gold wolf would look colorful and pretty. And yes, besides James not being his biological father, there is another reason his Patronus is a wolf.
