Skye just moved…again. Her social worker Maria Hill is a pretty good one compared to her last 4 social workers, but this time like all the last, she gets to go to a new school. Great…
"Skye," Maria says, looking back at Skye, "Please, just give this a try,"
Skye sighs, "Okay" she says quietly. Skye is just waiting until she turns 18 so that she can get out of the system.
They get out of the car and walk up to the house. Knocking on the door,
"Hello, you must be Ms. Hill and Skye"
"Hello, Skye, this is Mr. Garrett"
"Hi"
"Why don't you two come in?"
He leads them inside and it seems pretty cozy. There is nothing fancy but it's nicer than some of the other homes she's been to.
"So, the boys should be back soon," Garrett smiles, pouring a glass of lemonade, "Would either of you like some?"
Skye shakes her head gently, while Maria smiles but says, "No thank you,"
"Now Skye I have enrolled you in Shield High"
Garrett nods "Yeah, it's a great school. The boys go there, and it's only a short walk. There are a lot of shops around too, which is perfect for after school. I think you'll really enjoy it."
"Great, Skye, you'll love that, won't you"
Skye smiles, "Yes, of course"
There is a slight pause before Maria turns to Skye, "Okay, I will be back in around a week. You have my number okay?"
Skye nods and watches as she walks out.
"How about I show you around?" Garrett offers, "So this is the kitchen, it's pretty big, even though I really don't cook" he jokes, "Um, this is the living room, the dining room and the hang out room"
Skye nods again, "And upstairs, we have my bedroom, Thomas's room, Grant's room, and Christian's room." He says leading her through the upstairs. He turns and opens another door revealing a plain room with a single cot and a closet. That's it. Skye nods, she can work with this...hopefully.
He gives a weird smile saying, "Sorry, it's not much"
Remember she hears Maria say over and over, Make eye contact, and respond. Looking into his eyes, she puts on a happy face, "Thank you."
"You're welcome. Now you probably should get ready for school, it starts in an hour. I have to go to work, but the boys should be home to walk you there. I don't care if you do something afterwards, but I need you to make dinner around 5pm. I won't be be home in time and the boys have sports."
"Uh-what-what do you want me to make-"
"Oh, anything, now I really have to leave. Your spare key is on the table with a backpack, don't lose it."
And with that he left leaving Skye to throw her bag down. She sits down on the cot as a cloud of dust shoots, clouding around her. She coughs roughly waving her hand to disperse it. Looking around the room there is nothing. She walks out, looking around the rest of the house. There are little amounts of decoration or any sign that someone lives there. Walking downstairs she examines the content in the kitchen seeing what she could make. Overall Garrett seems like a nice guy.
"Dude, shut the h-ll up" she hears as the door opens.
"Grant, that shot, easy"
3 boys walk into the living room, stopping short as they see Skye. They are in gym clothes with bags of sports equipment.
"Why hello, what's your name" Christian asks playfully.
Respond Skye, "Skye, nice to meet you"
"Pleasure is all mine, Skye" he smiles, "I'm Christian the oldest"
Skye strains, trying to keep smiling, "Hi"
"Christian p-ss off" another guy respond, "I'm Grant, the normal one"
Skye chuckles softly,
"Grant, your charm can't fool everyone. I can tell Skye's smart enough to avoid you. I'm Thomas"
"Still Skye" she jokes as they laugh.
They excuse themselves to freshen up and change, making them look more presentable for school. The first boy that was ready was Grant,
"So how old are you?" He asks.
"17,"
"Oh, you're the same age as I am."
Nodding along they have a few moments of silence before Christian runs down, "Guys, we're late get you a-es down here."
She gets up grabbing the key and her backpack, meanwhile Christian is forcefully dragging Thomas down by the ear.
"Oww, oww, can you not?" Thomas asks pushing Christian's shoulder leading him to bang into a wall.
"Name" the receptionist spits. She is in the main office. They boys walked to her the office before heading to homeroom.
"Uh, technically, Mary Sue Poots. Um-uh is there any way to um...change it, like a nickname?" Skye explains fidgeting in place.
"I can try. What's your preferred name?"
"Skye, uh S-K-Y-E,"
"Okay so Skye, you're in Mr. Coulson's homeroom. It is on the second floor, room 408. Here is your schedule."
"Th-hank you"
She exits the office trying to find the room. Remember what the lady said. Uh, second floor 408. She walks up the stairs and down the hall.
403 ...406 ...
408, Bingo.
Skye knocks on the door. The teacher walks over, uh Mr. Coulson and opens the door. His smile is wide and his eyes are kind. It makes her a little uncomfortable, yet calms her.
"Hi, you must be our newest student Mary Sue- Oh I mean Skye, I'm sorry" He gently laughs, "Please come in. Everyone this is Skye, she is new, please make her feel welcome. Why don't you take the empty seat in between Jemma and Leo"
Walking to her seat she notices Jemma and Leo. They are hunched over and scribbling muttering together. She feels weird sitting in between them, as they glance up, their eyes examining her up and down. She feels under dressed compared to them. They are in sweaters and collared shirts, while she has on a purple shirt and some ripped jeans. No, she didn't buy them like that. Sliding down in her chair she avoids the stares she gets, god it must get even more embarrassing as time goes on.
The bell rings and everyone gets up to move to their next class. She glances down at her schedule. Skye hums, Computer Science Analysis room-
"Hi, I'm Jemma" The girls speaks up in her British accent making Skye slightly jump,
"Skye-"
"This is Leo," She smiles nudging her partner.
"Hi" He smiles lightly with his Scottish accent. "Nice to meet you. Where are you headed?"
"Yeah, What class do you have?"
Skye nervously glances at her sheet again,"Uh Computer Science Analysis"
Their faces light up, "That's where we're going, come on, we'll walk together"
