EXT REPUBLIC CITY HALL - DAY

Republic City is overrun, but this time, in a much more natural, balanced manner. Greenery has invaded nearly every aspect, lining the sidewalks and wrapping the streetlights. Automobiles have dug their trenches in the streets, a tacit sign of cooperation between the two worlds in a more practical way than before.

At one of the corners, scholars and students watch a flower bloom with children. From the blue and pink leaves comes a tiny spirit being born, unfurling into a small, spice-excreting creature like Humph that floats away.

PROFESSOR

Here we are, children - one of the first spirits born in over three years!

CHILD 1

(loudly)

Can I eat it!?

CUT TO:

EXT REPUBLIC CITY SOVEREIGN GROUND - DAY

A line-up of familiar and new world leaders stand on either side of a group of Brindauk's aides carrying a massive pair of scissors towards a red ribbon. Mako stands tall next to Adachi, who is hunched over a hewn cane.

Mako steps forward into a microphone.

MAKO

(into mic)

The United Republic of Nations is proud to be the first nation to offer our fellow dignitaries the Nation of Commonwealth - a place where we can govern as a single world. Brindauk, please...hm?

BRINDAUK

Wait, whoa - hold on, bring it over - no, no, this way!

Mako meets grumpy eyes with Adachi, who uses a small flame from his fingers to slice the ribbon. Mako nods and starts applauding, bringing the rest of the crowd with him. Brindauk and his lackies fall off the platform with the scissors.

Quickly up the platform are three reporters with large recording devices on their backs. Flanking them are a handful of camera operators, lugging the bulky gear across their backs. One turns slightly to give a view to the stenographer on their back, ready to type away.

Uma elbows her way to the front, swinging a foam bat to thwart off any others.

UMA

Yo, Uma Yang-Shuen, Hot, Hot, News Radio - what's the deal with the new building?

MAKO

(confused)

Uh, the 'deal' is called worldwide governing. Capital City will be opening a similar one, as will Ba-Sing-Se before the end of the year. We are through running and hiding from one another. Now, we will work together towards a better world.

UMA

Uh-huh, and what's the first governing that'll happen here?

MAKO

(clears throat)

Hm, well, the first thing needed is to...WOW, IT'S HERE!

He turns everyone's attention at once towards a beautiful group of flying elephant-gators that glide in on metal wings. The crowd claps as the show begins, Mako slipping away behind a curtain.

MAKO

(sighing)

How about I outlaw reporters first...daw, I should've said that.

ADACHI (O.S.)

(croaking)

You're power hungry already, huh? Trust me, it doesn't turn out well.

Mako turns to Adachi as the man slowly waddles up.

ADACHI

Tell me, Mako - how in the world are you still so upright and spry?

MAKO

Certain...clothing choices take the choice out of my hands.

ADACHI

Hm, smart.

MAKO

You know, Adachi, I think we finally have a world that's just happy to be alive.

ADACHI

(growling)

I'll believe that when I see it, but I'm glad you're hopeful, Mako. That's a good quality in a world leader.

MAKO

And you? What brings a retiree out of the word-work today?

ADACHI

Nothing, just out stretching my legs.

MAKO

And serving your country?

ADACHI

Not today. That's the next Emperor's job.

MAKO

Hmph. More change. I can't help but...heh, never mind.

ADACHI

What?

MAKO

(chuckling)

No, I...I've just had this conversation before. I don't want to ruin the good times. Take care of yourself, Adachi.

ADACHI

Yes, you as well, Mako.

MAKO

One more thing...

Adachi stops, half-turned, looking up in strained patience.

ADACHI

I haven't seen her in six months.

MAKO

No one has. Next time you do, please remind her, again, that we can't legally start governing as a world without her signature.

ADACHI

Have you tried calling her?

MAKO

Do you have a number to try her at?

ADACHI

(chuckling hoarsely)

I'll try to track that down.

Adachi waddles away, pushing out from the backstage area into the wider street. He loosens the top few buttons of his tight, red jacket as he comes towards Kota. She, wearing dark colors, has a new, shorter hair-do and types away with a stylus upon a small, portable messaging device.

ADACHI

Can't your expanding empire survive a few hours without you?

KOTA

(mumbling)

I ask myself that every single time I go to sleep. How was the ceremony? I can smell the animal droppings from here.

ADACHI

Fine. Brindauk fell. Again.

KOTA

(laughing)

My surprise is back-ordered, but would you look at that, my laughter arrived on time.

Adachi chuckles as well as he moves towards the trunk.

KOTA

Abe!

Her heels click up towards the tinted driver's window before she gently taps her knuckles against the glass. The window rolls down to show Abe, waking up behind a pair of flared sunglasses.

ABE

(groggily)

Hm? Yeah? Ready?

KOTA

Pop the trunk, sweetie.

They obey before leaning out the window, looking towards Adachi for a moment.

ABE

(quietly)

That was quick.

KOTA

(quietly)

He wants to get this over with.

Abe turns towards Kota, who steals the glasses off their face.

ABE

It's overdue.

KOTA

You can say that again. Why are you so tired, by the way?

ABE

A hot-rod-driving volcano of persistent success can't take a nap these days?

She barely contains a sweet smile waiting for Abe to spill the beans.

ABE

(quietly)

...and I'll tell you later.

KOTA

(quietly)

Just tell me you weren't calling people all night trying to sell zeen subscriptions.

ABE

Twelve months for only three silver pieces! I told you people can't recognize a good deal when they hear it.

The trunk slams closed and Adachi comes around to the passenger side, now with a black jacket on and carrying a zipped bag.

ADACHI

How long to get there?

ABE

Two minutes tops.

KOTA

Driving like a normal person would, Abe.

ABE

Ten minutes tops.

ADACHI

(growling)

I'd like to get there in one piece.

KOTA

You take front, grump. That way you'll get there slightly faster than me.

She tips Abe's cap to bring a smile to their face before all three get settled into the car.

CUT TO:

INT KIN-SHIP GLASS - DAY

Inside of a red-hot forge, glass forms in a bubble at the end of a long pole. It slides through to the other side where thick-gloved hands wipe it down very precisely, shading red, blue, and yellow pigments in various mixtures along the round bottom.

Pulling back, Zura, now in her late teens, sweats with bulging muscles and a new-age haircut. Using a small hammer, she breaks the glass off the blower and brings it over to an assembly line of several other people, each cutting, reforming, and otherwise shaping beautiful sculptures - both with bending and without.

ZURA

Mom, how's this?

Kin comes over, wiping her own brow as her eyes analyze every angle of the new hemisphere. Her look is as sharp as ever, and her glasses are nowhere to be seen.

KIN

Three divots - too much pressure as you wipe, Zee.

ZURA

(sighing)

I'm sorry, I'm...distracted today.

KIN

Nonsense. You are simply finding a new way to make...art.

She lovingly wipes at a smudge on Zura's cheek, receiving a death glare in return.

ZURA

(whispering)

Not in front of the glaziers...

KIN

(whispering)

Then don't call me mother either. Deal?

ZURA

(whispering)

Yes, fine, you win.

Kin gives a satisfied nod and walks away. Zura looks through the glass front to see children peering in, trying to catch a glimpse.

ZURA

You should sell standing-room tickets to all those looky-loos.

KIN

Word-of-mouth is...nearly as good as a purchase.

She regards the hemisphere in Zura's arms.

KIN

What's that one going to be?

ZURA

I haven't decided yet. I want to use the imperfections to feed into something beautiful, you know? Like a...rice ball.

KIN

Have you taken lunch today?

ZURA

(groaning)

Ugh, it's just a metaphor! Obviously I don't want to eat this glass.

KIN

Obviously.

ZURA

But I do want to stop throwing away...breaking...shattering-

KIN

Wasting?

ZURA

Yes, wasting glass.

KIN

Well, if you want to showcase your inner beauty in a way that positively affects my bottom line, I would be ever-so-grateful, Zura.

ZURA

(quietly)

Wait, the bottom line isn't...bad right now, right?

KIN

No, are you kidding? Our Flame-o Home line is positively-

ZURA

(quickly)

Don't say it!

KIN

(cheekily)

...on fire! Ha, couldn't help myself!

ZURA

(groaning)

When does Mom get back home?

KIN

Oh, my Mom jokes will keep you plenty entertained until she does in a few days.

ZURA

Alright well until she does, you're stuck with my clumsy child hands, so don't you...

Zura trails off as her eyes gaze out the window.

KIN

Your tiny hands are perfect for the smaller pets and - oh, maybe even the balloon sculptures!

The glass from Zura's hand crashes to the ground. Kin stands up straight, sighing.

KIN

(angrily)

I've already gotten you the non-stick gloves - what's it going to take for you to...?

Kin spins to see Zura softly waving at someone in the window. She follows her view to see Makami, wearing a blue jacket with longer hair and a wide smile, waving back at them. Makami holds the scars around her eyes still, and her weight lens heavily onto a blue, wooden cane.

KIN

(softly)

Get a broom.

CUT TO:

INT ABE'S CAR, IN TRAFFIC - DAY

Abe has their chin on the steering wheel, looking bored as the cars barely inch their way forward. Adachi snores softly next to them, causing Abe to yawn.

ABE

(softly)

Sleeping gas in this car, hm?

Their ears flinch from the sound of Kota's ripped snore in the backseat. Abe looks over their shoulder to see her slammed against the window, already drooling with one leg kicking.

ABE

(softly)

Contagious, it is...

After inching up again, they glance to the two of them again before pulling out a small box from an interior jacket pocket. Popping it open quietly, a modest diamond shines from atop a gold-and-platinum band.

Kota snorts quickly, causing Abe to slide it away quickly. They smile as no one seems to have caught the movement, then catches the glare of an elderly, hunched man in the car next to theirs. The man's frown is frighteningly deep.

ABE

Hey, come here often?

From the reclined position swings up another elderly man, looking just as dour as the driver. Abe simply rolls up the window, giving them a strained smile the entire way.

CUT TO:

EXT KIN-SHIP GLASS - DAY

In the back alley within a small, fenced area, Zura, Makami, and Kin all sit at a picnic table with small morsels on napkins. Makami rubs at her shoulder with a worn adventurer's pack at the side of the table.

Kin and Zura eye the small bite in front of them while Makami picks up hers - each of them a golden morsel with lines of red sauce on top.

MAKAMI

This one should be much better than the last. I messed with the PH balance and toned down the sulfides.

ZURA

And you took out the gross stuff too, right?

MAKAMI

Nothing but good stuff remains upon my word.

KIN

What do you call it?

MAKAMI

Try it first.

ZURA

(mumbling)

Well, I almost made it to twenty...

She takes a single bite, the consistency like thick cake and the red sauce almost a caramel. Zura's eyes stay closed as she takes long chews, swirling it between her cheeks.

Finally, she swallows heavily, sitting still for a moment longer.

ZURA

(shrugging)

It's pretty good.

MAKAMI

Pretty good?

KIN

(rolling her eyes)

Zura's tastes are impossibly scattered. Not a single correlation to be found.

ZURA

(refined)

My tastes are simply better than most.

KIN

Hm, well, allow me to be the deciding factor.

Kin chomps into the whole thing at once, letting it roil in her cheeks as the flavor washes over her.

KIN

(mouth filled)

It's subtle, the roil of choco-nilla bean. That spike of claspberry is marvelous.

(swallowing)

Overall, delightful.

Makami looks between them.

MAKAMI

(giggling)

Glad I ask you two of all people...

KIN

Well, if you wanted bubbly and effusive, you should've just waited for Baki.

ZURA

(chortling)

Psh, yeah, Mom Two's probably pulling up to your new place right now. You know she'll break in a window to find you too.

MAKAMI

(smiling)

Oh, yeah, well, I figured she'd drop in unexpectedly one day, so I left her a little present or two.

CUT TO:

INT MAKAMI'S HUT - DUSK

Deep in the spirit swamp, Baki gently pushes in the wooden front door, with her suitcase on her shoulder. She looks around curiously at the wooden shack - clearly built in a rush and lacking even a full floor. Baki herself has a ponytail but otherwise looks hardly touched by the last few years.

Finally, her eyes land upon a hanging voice recorder swaying directly in front of her. She takes it and presses play.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Hi Mom! Yes, I'm out, and yes, I'm sorry I don't have a phone or...a mailing address really. Yes, I'm washing behind my ears, and finally, yes, your worrying is this predictable. But I love you for it. Anyways, I left tapes all around here explaining what I'm doing if you're-

The tape suddenly cuts off.

BAKI

(mumbling)

Where's the other tape?

She flips on a switch that illuminates several strands of lights around the rim of the slanted ceiling. Throughout the domicile are tools and documents used for looking into space and measuring great distances. In the corner is a shining telescope - one of the only modern pieces in the abode.

Baki finds a tape on Makami's workbench, inserts it, and presses play.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

-curious at all. Oh, of course, my last tape ran out at the worst possible place, so now I'm off center. I'm just going to be quiet until this one runs out, then start clean.

The silence drags on with only subtle clicking through the speaker. Baki sighs and lets down her suitcase with a thud. Looking down, she sees the roots of the Great Tree acting as a floor.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Okay, how long is this stupid-

The tape clicks to a stop.

CUT TO:

EXT KIN-SHIP GLASS - DAY

MAKAMI

So, she's getting along just fine. How are you two? Covered in glass shards, I see?

KIN

Yes, well, Zura creates quite the splash zone.

ZURA

(blushing)

Hey, I'm learning. I just get sweaty hands, and the rags are weird.

Makami turns to her baby sister.

MAKAMI

How're things, sis?

ZURA

(mumbling)

I don't know. I don't want to stop you if you have to jet off somewhere or other.

MAKAMI

I came here only to get judged by you two. I've got nowhere else to be.

Zura stifles a smile as she swallows the rest of her sister's delicious treat.

ZURA

I suck at my job, but I've got my own place at least.

KIN

And in your free time...?

ZURA

She doesn't want to hear about that, Mom.

KIN

She did ask.

MAKAMI

Confirmed, I did - tell me.

ZURA

(shrugging uncomfortably)

Well, I...I took a class, then another, and I'm almost licensed, so it's almost, you know, official...Spirit Reader.

KIN

She's already guessed three favorite colors, six people's age, and-

ZURA

(embarrassed)

But that's all part of the tier one sage examination - I need to be able to prove that I'm the real deal.

MAKAMI

(slowly)

So you prove you're the real deal by guessing people like colors and how many wrinkles they have?

ZURA

(softly)

Yeah, I mean, it's something...

MAKAMI

(excitedly)

Cool! All that exposure from Nandaka must've really amped up your spiritual abilities.

Zura lights up like a lightbulb, her embarrassment growing but also sharpening into excitement.

ZURA

(quickly)

Yeah, I think I'll be all the way up to sensing lost keys and wallets by the end of the month.

Makami smiles genuinely, laughing with the other two. After it ends, Kin and Makami meet eyes.

MAKAMI

Kin, how's the glass business?

KIN

Quite healthy. My accounting practices are always...ready for game time!

Kin chuckles to herself while Zura winces mightily.

ZURA

(to Makami)

Mom Two got her a book of jokes. Blame her.

MAKAMI

I one-hundred percent do.

CUT TO:

EXT VARRICK WORLD - SPIRIT WORLD

Adachi leads Kota and Abe through one of the walkways of Varrick World, a plastic mold of Varrick's old hairdo sat upon either of their youthful heads. Adachi is a few paces ahead of them while Abe holds the majority of the souvenir bags, Kota digging through one of them.

KOTA

(agitated)

And you packed the water bottle, right?

ABE

Yeah, it's in there under the blanket, the sunscreen, the day planner, the Varrick Pass-

Her hand emerges with a water bottle shaped into the visage of Varrick hugging a water bottle - needlessly complicated design.

KOTA

Found it. Still cold too.

Adachi turns with a grunt.

ADACHI

This is the right way?

ABE

Uh, yeah, just past the Fluff Sugar Wig stand.

Abe takes the water bottle while Kota takes a large inhale.

KOTA

Spirit World just feels different now.

ABE

It's a little creepy. I miss the spirits - crazy little guys.

KOTA

I read that there was another one born last week. They're starting to come back.

ABE

Good...I think.

KOTA

What's that mean?

ABE

It means...I don't know, change is scary. Last few years since Makami put the hurt on Ananta Shesha, no wars, no battles, tabloid writers are writing about bad car paint jobs and people tripping on curbs. The more new we introduce, the more likely that something goes bad.

KOTA

And Abe's approach to the world is everyone freeze in place and keep everything just like it is?

ABE

No, not everything. Just the, you know, world-ending things.

KOTA

I never pegged you for that type, Nabendu.

ABE

What type is that?

ADACHI

Here!

The two come up quickly behind him, Abe setting down the bags. Each of them crane their necks skyward, looking to the top of the ride, Varrick's Ego. It is a series of columns tied together by several bands, allowing individual riders to catapult one another up like conjoined rubber bands.

Adachi turns to Abe, who is unfolding a map.

ADACHI

This one, right?

ABE

Yes - *ahem* - "Varrick's Ego, designed by Varrick's lovely, talented, brilliant, always-watching wife Ju-Lee, is the tallest amusement device in either world. The top of the ride is actually the tallest point in all of Spirit World."

KOTA

Sounds about right.

ADACHI

What's the plan?

Abe dives into two of the bags, coming back out with baby seats and a deflated smile.

ABE

(dejected)

I think it's time for Abe to be the mule...

Kota smiles while Adachi just frowns.

CUT TO:

INT MAKAMI'S HUT - EARLY NIGHT

Baki wanders around the lengthy desk, moving aside pages of printed celestial maps. Her hands lightly touch upon a half-constructed orrery as well.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

After Ananta Shesha consumed all the planets and most of the spirits, I knew I had to map out the new universe around us. First, I saw gravity wells in space at the middle of off-kilter debris spirals. Sure enough, right in the middle is a big blank piece of spacial real estate.

BAKI

(mumbling)

Should've made you study this in college.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

And I know what you're thinking - yes, you should've bought me that telescope when I was a kid.

She rolls her eyes as the tape stops. She turns, uncapping the end of the telescope and leaning down to look through the eyepiece. Looking through, Baki frowns.

Through her eyes, we see Makami has written several notes to herself in the margins of a newspaper clipping taped over the telescope lens. The headline reads "THOUSANDS DEAD, AVATAR GONE AGAIN?". The notes in the margin are mathematical, circling an exact number of those killed in Ananta Shesha's wake in the millions.

BAKI

(mumbling)

Makami...oh, baby girl.

She pulls away, turning to see another tape hanging from a small fridge in the corner. It pops into the player.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Okay, so, you may want to pay attention to this tape if you plan on eating anything in the fridge. I have a very specific order, so let me walk you through it.

Baki eyes the fridge warily as a sound like growling seeps from the metal box.

CUT TO:

EXT VARRICK'S EGO - SPIRIT WORLD

At the end of the line, there is an overhang where the ride operator, currently wobbling between sleep and boredom, sits. Grunting and hoisting to the top of the metal overhang is Abe, their face bright red as they carry Kota and the bags on their back and Adachi, strapped to a child's seat, to their front.

On Adachi's lap is his satchel.

ABE

(wheezing)

Already...regretting...this!

KOTA

Save your air, sugar burst.

ADACHI

(growling)

You can do this, Abe. Where do you need my fire?

ABE

(wheezing)

Shoot...it...up.

Adachi obeys, gently streaming flames above them. Abe works too hard to spiral the flame around them. Kota squeezes tight to Abe's back.

KOTA

Watch it!

ABE

(wheezing)

Leave a customer complaint.

They spread the flame into two thrusters that rush them into the air. The spiral continues, bringing Abe nothing but woe as their eyes bulge and sweat paints their face. Kota blots Abe's head as they pass screaming children and crying adults on the ride.

After the lengthy flight, they break the clouds at the top of the spire. Adachi smoothly removes himself from the seat before Abe lands.

KOTA

Way to go, Abe.

ABE

(tiredly)

Please give me a five star rating...

Kota detaches from Abe while Adachi moves forward, taking in the view.

ADACHI

(mumbling)

The Forest of Lost Time, the Geyser of Lost Love-

KOTA

The Meat Stickery.

ADACHI

Yes.

KOTA

(sighing)

So, let's get this over with.

Abe slicks back their hair, coming up with a black jacket and bowtie. They and Kota straighten one another's outfits. Meanwhile, Adachi unbuckles his pack.

Kota looks down.

KOTA

(nodding to the metal platform)

Looks like we're not the first ones up here.

Abe turns with a smile.

ABE

Aw, Kinchi and H.H. I hope they got down from this thing.

KOTA

(quietly)

Hey...you ready for some change?

ABE

(quietly)

Don't worry about me.

She smiles sweetly before they both turn, hands clasped at their fronts, towards Adachi. He rises with an onyx urn in hand, grunting to stand without his cane.

ADACHI

Today is a day very too late but one that we had to face.

He turns to the other two.

ADACHI

Do you two have anything to say before I get started?

KOTA

Yeah.

She removes her sunglasses and takes a step forward. She adjusts her hair a few extra times with a shuddering breath.

KOTA

Voso, I want you to know that it was me that stole your messenger money that one time, and I bought something very pretty with it.

Abe gently nudges her. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.

KOTA

(quickly)

But I'd have given it back to know what in the world you were thinking, and I want you to rest easy knowing I'll be the bigger sibling and choose to remember the good times.

She slams the sunglasses back to her face and steps back. Abe steps forward, coughing once.

ABE

You...man, Voso, you are a tough act to rave over. You...you made a lot of people happy. You had to have, right? That's why so many felt it when you left. For my part, I hope you did what you had to do to get right in the end.

Abe steps back as Adachi gently nods, turning back towards the horizon. He holds up the urn, staring down to it with stone eyes.

ADACHI

(quietly)

Up here, I think I finally understand your mind. I can see the horizon, almost reach out and touch it. I know you could too, son. You just...you didn't...I hope you never have to reach that far again.

He lifts the lid from the urn. Kota takes off her sunglasses again, staring thoughtfully at her grandfather while wiping away starting tears.

ADACHI

Now, you're free of it all.

KOTA

(quietly)

Abe?

ABE

Yeah, breeze is coming.

They take the wind to shoot through the grey ashes poured from the urn. Abe swirls it up into a loose cloud that Adachi ignites into a short-lived sparkle of rainbow colors.

Kota walks forward to hug Adachi from behind.

KOTA

(whispering)

You did well, Oji.

Abe reaches in to their jacket to retrieve the ring box again. Their eyes catch something behind the box on the ground.

ABE

Hm?

Looking closer, they see elements chiseled into the metal that would mean nothing to most other people. To them, this was a sign of life from Makami.

ABE

Hey, guys?

Kota and Adachi turn back as Abe leans down, sliding the box back into his jacket.

ABE

Irdine, Luketium, Varadium, and Urmomium...that's-?

KOTA

Makami?

ADACHI

She was here too.

ABE

For the same reason.

All three of them look around sadly before Abe rises to full height again.

ABE

Alright, back in your baby chair, Adachi. We've got more park to see.

Adachi growls while Kota quickly hops onto Abe's back, kissing their cheek.

CUT TO:

EXT SAND BLAST CITY - NIGHT

In the great desert of the Earth Kingdom, there is a high rise on thick stilts to a massive platform. Upon the stilts is a city made of metal, glass, and sand. The buildings are tall, resembling castle turrets with illuminated windows and dancing spotlights.

Moving in, we see a celebratory festival with beads and sand-balls being thrown all around. Benders and non-benders alike bring flavor to the sand fight, turning the ground into a thick muck while others effortlessly scale buildings to bring down a waterfall of sand.

All of it is in good fun, and from one window, we see Toyo grumpily staring out from behind a closed window like a child that can't go play with his friends.

INT TOYO'S ROOM - CONTINUOUS

He sighs and grumbles out the window while tapping his metal hand on his desk. In the foreground is a massive stack of documents that looks dangerously close to tumbling over.

Just as it does, Inca comes over to catch them all.

INCA

Whoa - the new tax plan is too ready for action, eh?

She reassembles the stack on another stuffed desk while Toyo turns from the window.

INCA

Will you stop pining? I'm stuck in here too, ya know.

TOYO

Yeah, well, my misery doesn't get better with company.

INCA

Not my company at least, hm?

TOYO

I wouldn't wish this on her.

INCA

Psh, she lived this with me - wouldn't you know it, I invented some of these forms.

She picks up a handful.

INCA

Application to Enter Earth Kingdom, application for Governance, application for Water Park Privilege Pass - and some other ones. Something about water and food access. I'm not sure what you expected to happen when you founded a whole city in the desert, but paperwork is your life now, champ.

TOYO

Only until the election.

INCA

Which only happens after the paperwork.

TOYO

Wait, how long will that take to process?

INCA

(groaning)

Uh, look, you'll still have some life to live after it's all done.

Toyo melts into his chair, pooling to the floor and rolling over to lie on a pillow.

TOYO

(muffled)

I should've stayed in Spirit Haven City.

INCA

Now, now, it'll go twice as fast if you stop whining.

A pen hits against his head, turning him towards Inca's smile.

INCA

Up-and-at'em, leader.

A faint ringing threatens to topple another stack. Toyo rises as Inca tries to unbury the phone. With practiced hands, she's able to stack atop her head, hands, and one knee. Toyo bends the metal phone to himself on the floor and picks up.

TOYO

(monotone)

Sand Blast City, where the fun is always also a blast - zombified temporary ruler Toyo speaking. How can I help you have a blast today?

ABE (O.S.)

Man, do you need to take a breath after that?

Toyo sits up.

TOYO

Abe?

ABE (O.S.)

Howdy stranger. I heard you went and built yourself one heck of a sand castle.

TOYO

Heh, yeah, turns out sand is pretty great to live in. It's soft...

INCA

(loudly)

Saves on utility bills too!

ABE (O.S.)

Is that Al?

TOYO

No, Inca.

INCA

(loudly)

When's the wedding, Abe?

CUT TO:

INT ABE'S CAR, VARRICK WORLD PARKING LOT - SPIRIT WORLD

Abe hides their mouth, still wearing all the Varrick World merch, as they speak into the large corded car phone.

Kota is outside the car, standing with Adachi in line for a port-o-potty. She's dancing back and forth to keep her pee at bay.

ABE

(sarcastically)

Ah-ha-ha, what a funny partner you have there, Toyo. Look, we just saw a sign of Makami for the first time in a while.

TOYO (O.S.)

Makami Ayame? Name doesn't ring a bell.

ABE

(rolling eyes)

The comedy just comes so naturally to you, doesn't it?

CUT TO:

INT TOYO'S ROOM

Toyo carries the phone with his metallic hand, helping Inca to dodge the cord as he moves to a tree in the corner.

TOYO

How is the Avatar these days?

ABE (O.S.)

I don't know.

Toyo pushes down one of the leaves on the tree, bringing water out like a drinking fountain that he sips from.

ABE (O.S.)

I was hoping you would. All we saw was a note.

TOYO

Nope, nada. She missed the city's opening, the Makami Memorial Library opening, the Makami-licious Desert-a-torium opening. I thought we'd get her with that one.

ABE (O.S.)

Yeah, no kidding.

He moves behind the desk again.

TOYO

What do we need her for this time? Spirit World bursting apart again? If so, I could-

ABE (O.S.)

No, just a lot of people wondering where the queen of the world is these days. Keep us in the loop if you hear anything, yeah?

TOYO

Oh. Yeah, I will.

The phone clicks silent before Toyo hangs up. A person surfing atop a sand wave moves past the window, having the time of their life.

Inca gently pushes Toyo's wide eyes away from the window and towards the paperwork. He melts back down into a puddle on the floor. After a moment, he reaches up to claw the pen down to his level.

TOYO (O.S.)

(sighing)

Ready...

CUT TO:

EXT KIN-SHIP GLASS - AFTERNOON

Out front of the shop, Zura is pointing in through the store front with Makami over her shoulder. People have started to notice who is out front of the store.

ZURA

That one was the first statue Kin and Mom made together. It was mostly Kin, which is why it's still standing.

MAKAMI

It's a nice plane.

ZURA

(groaning)

Ugh, you won't believe what they called it. "Love has Wings."

The sisters share a disgusted look. Zura points to another one through the window, but Makami has started to notice the mumbling crowd.

ZURA

That one we bought down the street and broke off a few arms. It's actually super easy to be an artist.

MAKAMI

Zee, I think it's about time for me to go.

Zura spins, shrugging.

ZURA

(disinterested)

Oh, yeah, okay, sure - thanks for stopping by. Don't forget to write. Or send birthday presents.

MAKAMI

I have to go, otherwise you, Mom, and Kin will get pestered all the time by people looking for me.

ZURA

Yeah, affirmative.

MAKAMI

When you get your license, I'll have you out to find my lost microscope.

ZURA

Mmhmm, I'll wait for the day.

Makami lets her head slide to the side, staring at her sister with a smile while gripping her cane hard.

MAKAMI

You are impossible.

ZURA

Hm, yeah, probably.

She steps closer, taking Zura into her arms in a tight hug.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Let's talk soon, okay?

ZURA

(quietly)

Yeah - yes. Let's do that thing.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Yu have my number, right?

ZURA

(quietly)

It's just one, right?

MAKAMI

(softly)

For you it is.

Zura finally uncrosses her arms and embraces Makami back. The two stand quietly, the crowd erratically applauding.

CROWD MEMBER 1

(shouting)

You're beautiful together!

ZURA

(shouting)

She's my sister, weirdos!

MAKO (O.S.)

Makami?

The two release as Makami turns to Mako, pulling down his hood to groaning, eye-rollingly-bored looks from the crowd. Makami gently pats Zura's face one more time before moving to Mako with a smirk.

MAKAMI

Took you long enough. Who sold me out?

MAKO

You used your real name when buying a train ticket. And your three bus tickets. And your take-out order from Ophie's. I knew you, of all people, wouldn't do that unless you wanted to be found.

Makami bites heavily on her bottom lip while her eye twitches. After a moment, she recovers.

MAKAMI

Yep, of course, all intentional.

MAKO

I'm sorry to interrupt, but while I have you,...shall we?

Mako moves aside to show a comically old-fashioned car. Makami cocks her head at the rickety thing.

MAKAMI

Sure.

She steps in, the frame screeching awfully as she does. Mako follows, strapping extremely-old driving goggles to his face before they take off - very slowly.

CUT TO:

INT REPUBLIC CITY SOVEREIGN GROUNDS BUILDING - AFTERNOON

Tourists snap pictures around the grand, quad-colored rotunda. Along the walls are glamour shots of the various world leaders, all looking like they're posing for yearbook photos.

Walking through it all with sand sloughing off enough to cause patrons to cough is Al, looking straight out of a Mad Max movie. She pulls down her mouth-protecting bandana as she approaches a wary secretary.

SECRETARY

Uh, hi - are you in need of a pamphlet?

ALRUND

No.

She pulls her hood down, letting the sand fall from her shoulders. Her face revealed, it's impossible to tell where her tan begins and the dirt ends, but she is glowing with a handful of documents jutting towards the secretary.

ALRUND

(happily)

I'd like Sand Blast City to be officially recognized by this body as a sovereign nation, and thusly apply for official offices.

The secretary dumps the mud out of her former water cup, it wiggling like gelatin.

SECRETARY

(annoyed)

Well, ma'am-

ALRUND

Al, please.

SECRETARY

(annoyed)

No, I think I'll call you ma'am. This establishment just opened today, so we're not quite ready for a deluge of pretender applications. Where was this application during the three year open period?

ALRUND

We are a new city in a hitherto untapped provincial possibility. We are now formed and apologize for the inconvenience.

SECRETARY

And this province is recognized by the Earth President as sovereign?

ALRUND

An Earth President does recognize it as sovereign, yes.

The secretary regards her for another few moments before turning away. As she does, Al rolls up her sleeve, showing several palm pilots taped to her arm. Upon each are things to say and words to avoid. As she taps on the screen of one, the power goes out, flashing a "low battery" message.

Before she can panic, the secretary is back with a large calendar.

SECRETARY

Well, these documents need to be presented to all leaders concurrently, then we'll have to clean out a custodial closet for your ambassador...and the next time they're all free is roughly fifty-six months from now.

Al gently pulls down the calendar, retaining her smile.

ALRUND

Actually, according to the new statute fifteen-dash...uh, the newest statute, a single leader can bring the approval to the other leaders on behalf of the joining partner.

SECRETARY

You mean the joining party?

ALRUND

Sorry, dry throat - anyways, I know President Mako is here thanks to his undeniably...unique taste in autos.

SECRETARY

Yes, well, he's in with the Avatar right now, so-

ALRUND

(surprised)

Makami? She's here?

CUT TO:

INT MAKO'S OFFICE

Makami stares sadly into the glass of unmoving water in her lap. A fire crackles in the background of Mako's office - many fires actually with each of them set upon a multi-scale of justice in perfect balance.

MAKO

And you're sure I can't get you anything else?

MAKAMI

Hm?

She looks up, seeing Mako behind his desk with as much of a smile as he can muster.

MAKAMI

Oh, well, I do actually have a list of things I came into the city to grab.

She retrieves the list from her bag while Mako looks on.

MAKAMI

Nothing too strange, just hard to come by in the swamp.

MAKO

Yes, the swamp - is that where you've been for a long time, avoiding us?

MAKAMI

(laughing)

What? No, just working on some projects that require low-light evenings.

She hands him the list that he hesitates to take. Finally, it unfolds in his hands.

MAKO

Tools? A chisel, small hammer...?

MAKAMI

Yeah, if you have a tool bag, I can probably just borrow that.

MAKO

I...yeah, I have one. But first...

He opens his desk drawer, bringing out a single, official piece of paper as well as a pen. He lays it near the top of the document. The header reads "Official Declaration of Abdication."

MAKAMI

(weakly)

This old thing again?

MAKO

It's been three years, Makami. Three years of building and promising handshakes. Of peace protected because I told everyone that the day of worldwide governing was here.

He stands from the desk while Makami's eyes become vacant.

MAKO

After you saved the world, you told me that was what you wanted - to step aside, to abdicate your power and let the world steer its own destiny.

He opens a small panel, reaching inside to retrieve a dirt-encrusted tool bag.

MAKO

I wanted you to stay, and I still do, but now is the time where you have to decide. Are you going to stay the Avatar, leading the world in peace?

The bag slides next to her on the carpet. Makami eyes the dirt on its handles.

MAKO

Or is it time to step aside?

MAKAMI

I'm nearly done with my study, Mako. I know I've confused everything lately, but I need a little more time to-

The door bursts open with Al - a trail of coughing guards behind her - arms out and ready to embrace Makami.

ALRUND

(excitedly)

The Avatar has returned!

Makami stands up and quickly hugs Al. Mako looks on surprised with an edge of frustration.

MAKAMI

Hey A-A-A-AH-CHOO!

She sneezes away from the dust while Mako moves behind Al, calming the guards and closing his door.

ALRUND

Yeah, sorry, I bring with me the gift of my people, I guess.

MAKO

(grumbling)

Your people's gift is making my office smell like wet sun.

He swings open the window outwards, holding up a pair of vacuums that clear the air.

MAKAMI

(giggling)

What are you up to now, Al?

ALRUND

Up to? Nothing! I'm here to...oh, yeah.

She straightens up, slicking back her wild hair and giving her body another pat to send more sand and dust into the air.

ALRUND

Mister President, I am here to petition you to have Sand Blast City be represented on Republic City ground.

MAKAMI

Sand Blast City?

She spins to Makami.

ALRUND

(excitedly)

Yes, yes, YES! Toyo and I built it with Inca's help, now we're trying to crash into the world stage!

Her eyes widen suddenly.

ALRUND

Oh gosh, I'm an idiot - I should be petitioning you for this, shouldn't I?

MAKAMI

Oh, no-

MAKO

Yes, you should be. Makami is the only one with the power to add or remove nations at this time.

She begins to wilt from them both - Mako standing strong and trying to force her into signing the paper and Alrund looking happier than she's ever been, and ripe for disappointment that only Makami can deliver.

MAKAMI

(quietly)

I...

ALRUND

Sorry, someone needs to tell the secretary in front who's really in charge here, right? Avatar Makami, that's who!

MAKO

Yes, Avatar Makami.

MAKAMI

(quietly)

I have to go.

Kicking over her cane, she walks out the door, leaving her bag and slamming the door behind her.

CUT TO:

INT MAKAMI'S HUT - NIGHT

Lying upon Makami's bed and peering out into the star-filled sky, Baki has her daughter's latest voice message playing from the recorder balanced on her chest.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

And the craziest part is that the quantum dislocation seems to be completely temporary - like the homogenous state has a will of its own...or something way more boring is happening like a quantum tether.

Baki yawns wide, looking nearly ready to nod off completely. Suddenly, a wooden rattling rips through the room. Baki sits up, reaching for the lights that spark up brightly.

BAKI

(grumbling)

What in the world is that?

She kneels down, pulling aside a small curtain to reveal a homemade telephone - a rectangular box where the reel-to-reel has been replaced with a pair of headphones and a funnel microphone.

Baki skeptically places the headphones upon her head before flipping a switch to send a high whine through her ears.

BAKI

Oh boy, I hate this.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Mom?

BAKI

Makami? How do I make you come in clearer?

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Right...hand...knob.

She fiddles with it for several rotations until the background noise begins to fade.

BAKI

Say something?

MAKAMI (O.S.)

I said do you remember our Shrimp Falls trip?

BAKI

Good, you're coming in clear now. And Shrimp Falls? Yeah, I remember the shortest vacation in the history of vacations. Is that why you're not here right now?

MAKAMI (O.S.)

It was my fault we left, wasn't it?

BAKI

What? What does that have to do with anything now, Makami?

CUT TO:

INT CUSTODIAN'S CLOSET

Makami is huddled down into a corner with a phone tight against her face.

BAKI (O.S.)

I mean, yes, because you couldn't sleep, we left, but those falls were roaring loud and-

MAKAMI

(sadly)

That was the first night I felt this feeling - this...this weight.

CUT TO:

INT MAKAMI'S HUT - NIGHT

Baki looks over at the newspaper clipping fluttering at the end of the telescope.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

It's grown and moved and rooted. Now, I'm...this world was gutted because of me.

BAKI

No-

MAKAMI (O.S.)

The Avatars nearly destroyed everything, Mom. How...how do I repay that? How can they ask me to run away from that debt?

BAKI

Makami Ayame, you look at yourself in the mirror. Right now, find one.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

(sadly)

I can't, Mom.

BAKI

(shakily)

Then...then I'll be your mirror. Close your eyes and imagine how young and gorgeous I still look.

MAKAMI (O.S.)

Okay, okay. I'm doing it.

Baki takes a deep breath.

BAKI

Now, what are you responsible for?

MAKAMI (O.S.)

All of this. The Avatar was a mistake.

BAKI

No, Makami.

CUT TO:

INT SIDE OFFICE

In the darkness of the office, the light from the doorframe splashes across her face. Her eyes are closed and her lips trembling.

BAKI (O.S.)

You are not responsible for the evil of history. You cannot save everyone from themselves. Makami, you...what you've done is ensure that the world lives. My baby girl, you have survived the worst pain imaginable with a level head. I could not be more proud of you.

Makami's eyes open, looking ahead to a partially-illuminated map that highlights part of the Earth Kingdom - a province which now holds the Air Capital.

BAKI (O.S.)

And if there are any doubts, any chains holding you down, then do what you do best, Makami.

She slides up the wall, her eyes locked with renewed focus upon the map.

BAKI (O.S.)

Break them.

MAKAMI

Thanks, Mom. I know what I have to do. I'll see you soon.

BAKI (O.S.)

Take your time, Ami. I'll be here when you get back.

She hangs up the phone while pulling a pen up from the desk.

CUT TO:

INT SIDE OFFICE HALLWAY

As Mako and Al approach, the door bursts outwards and Makami takes off towards the front door.

ALRUND

(shouting)

Hey, Makami, wait!

MAKO

(grunting)

Great, just great...

Al leans her head into the office, seeing the pen stabbed at a precise location upon the map. Her eyes sharpen.

She steps towards the phone.

ALRUND

Hey, Mako? You have Adachi's phone number, right?

MAKO

I think so, yes.

ALRUND

Get him on the line. I'll call back home.

CUT TO:

INT MAKAMI'S HUT

Baki lays the equipment down while wiping at her eyes and sitting back. She lets out a heavy sigh into the air. Creaks resound from the stairs outside.

BREAD (O.S.)

Alright, you, in there! C'mon out! Y'all are surrounded!

Baki opens the door without standing up, seeing Bread and a few other guards dropped into fighting stances. None of them relax when seeing Baki.

BAKI

Oh, hey, I'm-

BREAD

(angrily)

A no-good, property-stepping thief is whatchu are, madame! Step on out of there and prepare to taste swamp water!

MIO (O.S.)

Grandma?

Baki's eyes widen along with Bread's as, from behind him, comes MIO (3). She has light red bunched, braided knots atop her head as she rubs at her face. Her eyes are different colors - one the same as Makami's while the other has Voso's color.

Baki stands, looking worried and happy at once.

BAKI

Mio, yes, it's grandma, baby. Your mommy didn't know I was coming - were you with your sitter?

BREAD

I'mma stander, stranger!

(to Mio)

You sure that's yer grammy, girl?

MIO

(ignoring him)

GRANDMA!

She waddles up the stairs with a root-woven doll in hand. Baki meets her on the first landing, hugging the little girl tightly.

As she lifts Mio up, the doll drops from the girl's hand. Before it bounces away, the vines of the Great Tree catch and return the doll to her, Baki looking perplexed but Mio just taking the loving gesture in stride.

CUT TO:

INT ABE'S CAR, IN TRAFFIC - DUSK

With Adachi asleep in the backseat, adorably cuddled into the arms of a giant stuffed Varrick doll, Abe drives along with a tune in their tapping finger. Kota naps next to them.

Abe looks over to her, smiling gently as they retrieve the ring box from their jacket pocket again. This time, they carefully pop it open, hoping to catch the waning sunlight just right.

Abe moves to slide the box into her open hand.

The car phone set into the middle armrest rattles hard enough to make Abe jump, tossing the box into the backseat. Their hands snap to the steering wheel as Kota and Adachi stir, her reaching for the phone while he holds up the ring box with confusion - meeting Abe's eyes in the rearview mirror.

KOTA

(groggily)

Hm? What?

There is a pregnant pause.

KOTA

(solemnly)

Yeah, okay, we'll be there.

She hangs it up, stretching forward.

ABE

(quickly)

What in the world could that have been - oh, just the wind, right? Back to sleep then.

KOTA

No, it was Mako and Al. They say Makami needs all of us.

ABE

Makami does?

ADACHI

Let's get to the airfield.

KOTA

Which airfield?

ADACHI

My private one, of course.

ABE

You mean the private one belonging to world leadership, which you are now retired from-

Adachi holds up the ring, rolling down his window to frighten Abe.

ABE

(quickly)

-but are still clearly qualified to be, obviously, therefore they'll let us in no problem!

KOTA

(to Abe)

Problem?

ABE

No, nah, no way - I get to use the button!

Abe twiddles their fingers in the air for a moment before reaching under the dashboard.

ABE

One last time, old buddy.

They press the red button labeled simply as "Ticket-Free Time."

CUT TO:

EXT ABE'S CAR - DUSK

A red light extends from the roof, and on the sides and hood unfurls banners that read "Diplomatic Immunity". Abe whips the car around on the highway, turning the opposite way before the hood banner completely covers the windshield. The wipers make quick work of it, sending the white banner dancing into the night.

CUT TO:

EXT AIR CAPITAL CITY - EARLY MORNING

In the years since the Air Capital was rebuilt, it's been rebuilt again and again to now be one-of-a-kind in the world. The city is split in twain - half standing above with familiar architecture, half sunken down into a wide hole beneath the city. Like two cities reflected, the Air Capital is a sight to behold.

Coming in closer, Master Paya leaves his home with a slow gait, groans of age leaving his mouth. He sets himself and a satchel atop a no-wheeled bicycle frame, using his bending to jet himself forward.

Soon, he's at a glass platform alongside a few others. A ceiling with hand holds descends to enclose them just before the capsule seals. Moving through a lit tunnel, the capsule flips in the air with non-benders doing well to hold onto the straps for a safe descent.

Everyone is let out of the floor as they arrive.

CUT TO:

INT PAYA'S OFFICE - MORNING

Paya opens the door to his office and flips on the light.

PAYA

(shocked)

VOLCANO SPIT!

His shocked expression causes him to toss his papers around as Makami wakes up in his chair, shrugging off one of his suit jackets.

MAKAMI

(sleepily)

Paya, hey, sorry I didn't have anywhere else to go.

PAYA

Avatar? Yes, of course not I...it's an honor.

He kicks his papers into a pile before bending them to his arms. Makami attempts to pick one up, but he quickly slides it from her grip.

MAKAMI

How have you been? I'm surprised to find your name out of the headlines for this long.

PAYA

(meekly)

No, no waves here. How's the hip?

MAKAMI

The doctor keeps telling me it'll recover, but I-

PAYA

May I?

Makami jumps up from his chair, offering it to him as she stretches using the desk for stability.

He takes it, spinning around while nervously bouncing his eyes between her and his empty desk.

PAYA

(clearing throat)

How may I...what brings you here?

MAKAMI

Some unfinished business.

Paya looks mortified, nearly freezing in fear as Makami reaches into her back pocket for another list.

MAKAMI

I need some stuff, and I was hoping you could...?

She watches him sweat and gulp down a hard slug of air, staring at the paper like it's his own eulogy.

MAKAMI

Paya?

He snaps out of it.

PAYA

(weakly)

What do you want from me? What else can you take?

MAKAMI

(softly)

I'm not here about what happened.

PAYA

No, you wouldn't be. You're just the marching unaffected, aren't you? After you...you took everything!

Makami swallows hard this time. After a moment, he suctions the list from her hand, quickly writing directions on the page.

PAYA

Go here, on the outskirts of the city. There's a farm that always has tools just lying on the ground.

MAKAMI

Are you saying I should steal them?

PAYA

(angrily)

I'm saying you've destroyed enough lives in my city.

He snaps the page up to her.

PAYA

(sternly)

Now leave!

She takes the list solemnly and leaves without a word.

CUT TO:

EXT FIELD OF WHITE UNDONE - DUSK

At last, we are at Makami's true destination - the funeral fields of the Air Nation. The white flowers along the edge have expanded outward to give more rows, but still at the center, where Makami now is, rest the visages of the direct descendants of Aang.

Upon the central altar now is a rough, hand-chiseled depiction of Shii from Makami's tools. The face is just never to Jinora's. She leans up, wiping away at her sweaty forehead as the chisel and hammer drops into the short grass. At the base of the altar is a brass plaque.

The handle of the tools are red with blood from her hands.

She slips off her green headband with her light orange poncho. Her ocean-blue work belt comes off as well, as do her dull red boots.

In her bare feet - stripped down to grey pants and tank top - she drops to her knees amongst the white flowers with a soft, tired smile.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Alright, looks pretty good, right? Let's get started.

She slides back, taking a deep breath in the beautiful sunset.

MAKAMI

We - meaning I - came here today to say that I'm sorry, again. I was late, again, even now. Kota told me you were lain to rest months ago, but I've...there's been a lot to pick up, you know? And I had to wait for the flowers to grow back...and I knew. You know what I knew, and I wasn't ready to face it, but I am now. So, shut up and let me flatter you, alright?

She chuckles softly to herself.

MAKAMI

Shii, you were a nexus point - a knot in causality that started all of this. You brought me into my own life, and I feel your absence every day.

She looks up into the sky with a small breeze picking up some of the petals around her.

MAKAMI

(softly)

I ask that your spirit is carried by those that love you most - myself included. I don't know where you are, but I have to believe that you're with Jinora now.

She closes her eyes and smiles.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Time for your favorite cake, old man. Rest well.

She lowers her arms, loosening her hands as the wind gusts around her. Then, she flourishes her hands into the air.

But nothing happens. The wind dies, the music gives out, and she is left with the painful remembrance - she has lost her ability to bend, Raava and Vaatu, and her connection to all things spiritual.

She has lost everything - her talent, her mentor, and the man she loved most in the world. For a moment, it's all too much; her eyes begin to well and her arms shake.

MAKAMI

(squeaking)

I'm sorry. I'm sorry, Shii, I'm so, so sorry. I don't know how to move on alone - I don't know how to be special if I'm not the Avatar. Please, if you can hear me, please help me. Help me-

Wind tunnels rise around her, carrying the petals into the air and completing the ceremony. She blocks her face with her bloodied hands, looking around to see dozens of air benders, all moving in unison to empty the field of flowers and help Makami.

She chuckles softly as she wipes her face. Many of the benders smile back as the wind stops. Then, one-by-one, they bow with complete abandon, respect and loving taking the place of piety.

Makami looks around the obelisk, seeing Kota, Abe, Mako, Adachi, Toyo, Inca, Zura, and Al - all of them having followed her here - smiling as they too bow. There she stands - the Last Avatar - unknowing of what to do besides smile and let her heart burst with the love around her.

She sprints forward as best she can with Kota and Zura breaking away from the pack to catch her into a tight, loving hug.

CUT TO:

EXT OUTSIDE FIELD OF WHITE UNDONE - EVENING

People of all nations have brought together a group of tables and local dishes. Lit flame lanterns project tranquility as the sounds of gentle laughter and recapping stories fill the night.

At one table, Abe leans their head against Kota's as they both sing a swash-buckling song. Next to them are Toyo and Al, their hands held under the table.

Another table brings together Inca and Zura, pointing to people in the crowd and writing on a list.

INCA

You can't just say "Abe" for all of the entries, Zee. Be a woman of discerning tastes.

ZURA

I've got a type. Don't you?

Inca flitters her eyebrows.

INCA

(happily)

I'm a ruler of many peoples...

At another table sits Makami with a small sandwich on her plate. She looks meek, her torso constricted. Even so, her eyes scan happily across the group.

Sliding down across from her is Adachi.

ADACHI

(grunting)

Ugh, dragon lords of old, I'm losing every bit of flexibility I had. How are you feeling these days, Makami?

MAKAMI

(quietly)

Good.

ADACHI

Good. Kota says you're star-gazing?

MAKAMI

(quietly)

Yep.

ADACHI

Yep, good, good.

He taps his cane a few times in the dirt.

ADACHI

Grah, I'm sorry, I know I've always been...I don't think I've ever stopped to thank you for what you did, what you gave up, and who you saved in my life.

MAKAMI

You never...

(sighing)

You never had to, Adachi. Never. I'm just...I don't know how to do big crowds anymore. Not even loved ones.

ADACHI

(chuckling)

You know we'd all leave if you asked. You've earned it.

MAKAMI

No, let's not go that far.

ADACHI

Perhaps...

He glances over, seeing Alrund approach with Toyo hand-in-hand. She looks happy while Toyo lags a step behind.

ADACHI

Want me to run interference?

MAKAMI

Maybe just stay here and help me remember how to...human?

Adachi nods just as Al and Toyo come to the table. Makami stands, hugging Al tightly.

ALRUND

Makami, I'm so glad you're alright.

TOYO

(to Adachi)

Adachi, hey.

Adachi puts his hands on the head of his cane, grunting with dead eyes.

ADACHI

Toyo. That your name still?

TOYO

Yeah. Thought about growing a moustache and changing it, but Al doesn't like facial hair.

ALRUND

Why would you want to carry a scratch pad on your face all the time?

(to Adachi)

Wanna come get me some cake, Comandante?

ADACHI

Uh...

He looks to Makami, but Al is already dragging him away.

ALRUND

(whispering)

Those two need to talk.

Toyo and Makami watch after them for a long moment. He finally breaks down, turning to her with an awkward smile.

TOYO

Hey, so, I was reading about this black nova sighting from one of the observatories. I think it was the...

He glances at his wrist where names and topics are written, or crossed out.

TOYO

Nobu Tower that published a paper about it. They said that the refracted light gave them pictures, but that the explosion itself must've been at least a few hundred years old. The light just, uh...

Makami grinds her cane tip into the ground, still not looking towards him.

TOYO

Just reached us - hey, how about that new statistical game theory paper put out by the head of the smath-cratitian...

He wipes at his forearm.

TOYO

Mathematician is what I...meant.

(sighing)

Do I get some credit for visiting the library to read all of this? The periodical section smells like...pipe smoke and wet paper.

MAKAMI

In all these years, I've pictured everyone's faces when I was lonely. Overheard Uma on the radio, telling me all about you all having so much success and happiness. Anytime I'd hear your name, do you know what came to mind?

TOYO

(quietly)

Hatred? Pain?

MAKAMI

Nothing at all. I gave no thought to forgiving you or hating you. But I guess I should make that decision now, huh?

TOYO

(quietly)

Just say the word and I'll disappear.

A sigh escapes her nose slowly. From beneath the ground comes a rising root. Toyo looks disgusted as it does, but Makami regards it kindly.

MAKAMI

(to branch)

And you have an opinion on this matter, huh?

A flower blooms with beautiful golden petals. Makami rolls her eyes.

MAKAMI

(mumbling)

Yeah, funny.

TOYO

(spooked)

Is the plant giving you advice?

MAKAMI

Suisen.

TOYO

Huh?

She snatches the flower, slotting its stem behind Toyo's ear before smirking at him.

MAKAMI

Means respect.

She slaps his cheek a few times.

MAKAMI

See you around, Toyo.

Adachi comes over with a fluffy piece of cake, handing it to her.

MAKAMI

Ready to take me around the room?

ADACHI

Sure. Before we do...

Adachi turns them both, bringing out Abe's ring box.

ADACHI

Abe has a question for Kota, and I came into possession of this.

MAKAMI

And you're holding it hostage?

ADACHI

I don't know. Would it be too...'old man' of me to have them ask me for permission?

MAKAMI

Don't be afraid of change, Adachi. Get it over with.

They turn back to the crowd to help Makami through the smiles and shaken hands. As they pass Abe, Adachi shakes their hand, sneakily inserting the box into the shake. Abe's eyes light up appreciatively as Adachi pats their cheek before following Makami.

She pauses before Mako's table. He's surrounded by half-eaten puff pastries and sports an opened girdle that lets his very full belly hang out.

MAKO

(groaning)

Sweets are...my weakness.

MAKAMI

So I see. I'm glad you could make it.

MAKO

I can smell sound, I think.

She chuckles lightly.

MAKAMI

Do you have it?

His eyes light up and belly sneaks back inside the girdle. From inside his loose jacket comes the official document that releases her from the power, stature, and political influence of the Avatar. He slides it to her between the puffs.

MAKAMI

You're going to recognize Toyo and Al's sovereign city, right?

MAKO

Well, we'll give it the proper-

MAKAMI

Sand Blast City is the only concentrated population within the acceptable limit of distance to make them a defacto nation.

She dips her pinkie into a glob of purple jam. Pressing it to the signature line, she signs her name in preserves.

MAKAMI

Don't make me come out of retirement to read your own rules to you, Mako.

MAKO

(quietly)

Yes, Avatar, uh...

He chuckles to himself, standing to bow to her respectfully.

MAKO

(gratefully)

Thank you, Makami.

By time her cake is finished, she and Adachi have made it to the front of the group. She nervously turns towards them all.

MAKAMI

(almost silently)

Excuse me, everyone? Excuse me?

ADACHI

(shouting)

MAKAMI ANNOUNCEMENT INCOMING!

Everyone turns with a smile while she takes a calming breath.

MAKAMI

(clearing throat)

Space was, very recently for us all, a source of wonder-turned despair. It's cold, nearly endless, and unimaginably dangerous at the best of times.

AL

(loudly)

Just like Abe's history owning cars!

Abe, looking dead inside, is slapped on the shoulders by several people while Kota tries to stifle a laugh next to them.

Makami cracks a smile.

MAKAMI

Tonight is a dark moon, so the light should be just right. I had planned on watching this at home, but...but I somehow forgot, again, that I can't be alone - and I don't want to be. You all came here, reminding me that I owe you so, so much. I won't forget it again. We saved space, so I think it owes us a good show.

As she finishes, she and everyone else gaze up as a meteor shower slices across the night sky. Small, blinking arrows zoom past to wide eyes. Makami puts her arm around Adachi's shoulder. Elsewhere, Toyo kisses Al on the cheek.

Elsewhere again, Abe breaths deeply as they lightly elbow Kota. She looks over. They nod to their hand where the box opens, revealing one last sparkling rock that glows in the night.

At first, her face is hard to read and Abe nears silent panic. After an eternity, Kota grabs the ring, slides it onto her finger, and kisses an elated, shocked Abe.

CUT TO:

EXT MAKAMI'S HOUSE - LATE NIGHT

Makami steps off the small boat on to her private dock, taking a moment to stretch her hip. With a deep breath from her chest, she shambles forward with a smile on her lips. Her face aims skyward as her eyes open. The branches move aside above her, creaking open the window to a beautiful, endless supply of research and wondrous discovery.

MIO (O.S.)

(softly)

Mommy?

Makami looks up at her daughter's beautiful, sleepy eyes.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Hey Mio sweetie, is grandma asleep?

She nods and grunts. Carefully, a group of branches come up beneath them both, lifting them with a giggle. The daughter jumps into Makami's arms as soon as she's close enough, and Makami spins Mio in the air.

MAKAMI

(softly)

Daddy wants us to hug it out.

MIO

(giggling)

Then hug me!

They do - the hug is so tight and full of love that the woes of the day simply melt away.

MIO

You too, Daddy.

The roots come up to gently wrap around their shoulders - Voso's spirit still quite clearly alive and at play within the Great Tree.

Makami turns to the stairs, taking them slowly.

MIO

(softly)

Did you see your speeed-eors, Mommy?

MAKAMI

I did, and I set the telescope to record.

She opens the door, hearing Baki sleeping soundly.

MAKAMI

So you, me, Grandma, and Daddy can all watch it. Together.

The door closes behind her, the last thing we hear being the appreciative giggle of a sleepy child and the wholesome chuckle of an Avatar, retired and at peace.

END

Author's note: Thank you all for reading all of Makami's journey in The Last Avatar. As you can imagine, this was a huge under-taking that took many, many months to polish up into a full story, so to see the final post go up is very nice indeed. Please favorite and/or leave a review - I have other ideas that I'd love to bring to life one day in this wonderful universe!
