Alright, we've met Arizona, now let's meet Callie... And thank you for the encouragement to continue. After this chapter they will get shorter, but that's because I want to do one point of view per chapter. And as always I do not own the characters.
Chapter 2- Callie
"That was a crazy day" I whisper to myself as I lay in this old bed. Arizona was right it is dusty in here, looking around the room, I couldn't really see much in the dark, but I felt safe. From the moment I heard her call out for me I knew I'd be safe, and I was. I should have probably called my dad and let him know I was ok but fuck him. If he's going to react the way he did then he can fuck off. He of all people knew I didn't love George, I never have, I was just with him because I didn't want to be alone. Letting out a deep sigh I roll over in the bed, and the shirt Arizona had given me to wear got caught under me, yanking it free I could smell her on it. I've always considered myself an open person, open to trying new things, and I had back in college, with my roommate Erica, she and I fooled around a bit, but nothing more than just making out. I touched her boobs once, but nothing ever came of it. She ended up dating a guy from down the hall, after the school year ended, I never saw her again. I've dated a bit here and there until I met George about 10 years ago. We were friends at first but as time went on, he kept asking me out, I finally gave in about 5 years ago, and we'd been casually, or what I considered casually dating since. Apparently, he thought it was more prompting him to propose. My family loved him, but me, not so much. So, I turned down his proposal. That was last week. My dad had found out about it yesterday, and he wasn't happy, telling me I had to grow up and find a man. Wonder what he'd do if I brought Arizona home? I chuckled at that thought. She was a very attractive woman, my best guess would be she's 5' 5" about 170 pounds, and those eyes. I smile thinking about her eyes, blue, like the summer sky. And the way she smiled, thinking about it is giving me butterflies. I, myself am a very attractive woman, maybe a little on the taller side standing at 5' 9", my hair is dark, but my eyes were my best asset, brown with a hint of honey in them. I found it funny how I ended up with George. I was always getting asked out, turning them all down. Rolling over again, I catch a glimpse of the old alarm clock 4 am. I let out a groan, why did I want to stay here? Oh right, if I would have left I'd never see her again, and I knew I didn't want that. My thoughts drift to my car, I wonder where it went. I laugh at the comment of it being stuck in the Kepner's barn. And then my thoughts went to Alex. He was a pretty handsome man, and you wouldn't be able to tell that he's transgender at all. I got the feeling they thought I'd be put off by it, but actually, I'm intrigued. I heard some movement outside the room and for some reason I found myself holding my breath as the footsteps passed my door. And chuckle, when I realize I'm not 12 anymore and don't have to hide the fact that I'm awake. Rolling over again, I close my eyes to try and get some sleep, but it fails, when the smell of coffee engulfs my nose. "yeah that's it" I mumble to myself, and toss the covers back. The shorts Arizona had given me were a little big, but they work. I slowly open the door and peak out. It's quiet and dark, until I get closer to the stairs, I see what I assume is the light from the kitchen. Slowly making my way down the stairs, I'm stuck in my spot when I see her. She's wearing basketball shorts, just like the pair I am wearing and a tank top, showing off her toned arms. I find myself getting a little worked up, I have to bite the inside of my lip to stop. She turns around and our eyes meet, I can't explain the feeling I got. It was almost like I was seeing her for the first time. The tank top she was wearing hugged all her curves in the right way. "hi" I say quietly
"hi" she says "coffee?"
"yes please" I say making my way into the kitchen, I watch as she pulls out a second cup filling it "do you need cream or sugar?" I look at how she has hers and shake my head "black is fine"
"ok" she set the cups on the table and I take a seat, picking up the cup, I blow on it then take a sip. This was some damn good coffee, and I've had some good coffee in my life. "so, how'd you sleep" she asks.
"well" I shrug and hear her giggle "I guess not so well since you're awake before 5."
"I've just got a lot on my mind"
"hmm" she hums as she takes a sip of coffee "hot" she sets the cup down and we laugh. "I was about to head outside, you care to join me?" she asks looking directly into my eyes, there goes the butterflies again. Since I wasn't able to say anything I just nod, and see her smile as she stands, and I follow her outside, to where we were sitting the night before. "I love it out here in the mornings" she says sitting down "do you mind if I smoke?"
"not at all it's your house"
"I was just trying to be polite"
"Arizona" I say quietly, getting her attention "you've been nothing but polite since you picked me up" I hear her scoff "yeah if you count polite as yelling at you to get in the truck"
"you didn't yell"
"no I didn't, but I could have"
"honey, there was a tornado baring down on us, you could have smacked me and I wouldn't have cared" I swear I just seen her blush a little at me calling her honey. She tried to hide her smile behind her coffee cup, but I could see it. "just wait until you see the sunrise"
"I love watching the sunrise, it reminds me it's a new day, and anything is possible"
"that's the truth" she lets out a sigh "although today I have a lot of work to do"
"I can help" I offer
"oh?" she looks at me with a smirk,
"what? I'm good with my hands" I say holding up my hands, it was at that point I realized I never told her what I do for a living. Hearing her laugh at my hands "I didn't tell you that I'm a landscaper" I try and hide my smile, I see her shake her head "no, no you didn't" I laugh "that's because I'm not, I actually work for my dad"
"go figure" she says taking a drink
"I'm the head of the finance department."
"nice" she takes another drink of her coffee
"and you still think I can't do it?"
"no, I don't think you can't" she shakes her head "I just don't want you to hurt your pretty hands"
"hey" I say playfully "I'll have you know I do all my own yardwork"
"ok" she smiles, that smile that I like "how dirty do you feel like getting?"
"depends what kind of dirty your talking about" I wink
"well" she moves in her seat, I can tell my words had some effect on her she clears her throat "after the storm yesterday the dogs didn't get to go out so I'm sure the kennels are a mess" she smiles
"you want me to shovel dog shit?" I pretend to be offended
"if you think you can handle it princess" oh I like this playful side of her
"oh I can more than handle it" I say sitting up in my chair
"great" she says "you can help dad with the kennels, and Alex and I will take care of the property, deal?"
"deal" I say reaching out my hand, she laughs and reaches out to shake my hand. When our hands touched, I felt that spark that was there yesterday. I was tempted to pull her into me, maybe try my luck at a kiss, but the spell is broken when Jack and Rose come up on the porch. "good morning guys" she says scratching their ears. Jack sits down in front of me, and Rose in front of her. "he wants pets" Arizona says as she runs her hands up and down Rose. I can't help but think lucky dog, Jack lets out a whine, and nuzzles his nose into my hand. "alright boy" I laugh and start rubbing on him. Some noise was heard in the tree line and both dogs took off, leaving me and Arizona alone. "so" I say looking over at her.
"you want some more coffee?" she asks
"sure" I smile and she jumps up taking both our cups and disappearing into the house. It was at that point that I realized she hadn't had her smoke yet. When she returns, with two steaming cups, I thank her and she sits back down. "you going to smoke that or just use it as an accessory?" I ask playfully.
"oh" she laughs "I kind of forgot" she reaches for the cigarette from behind her ear and lights it. I smile, as I watch her. The sun was starting to show itself, as she motions toward it "show time" she almost whispers and we sit back in our chairs. Watching the sky go from black to blue. "my mom used to sit out here, and watch the sunrise every morning" she says quietly, I get the feeling she doesn't talk about her mom much, so I'm quiet so she'll go on "when I was a kid she'd wake me up and we'd sit out here together" I'm still quiet "my dad wanted to move to town when I started school, but my mom wanted no part in it" I chance a look at her and see she's staring off into the rising sun, and goes quiet. "my dad inherited the dealership through my grandpa" I offer realizing I really haven't given her much about myself. "my mom though. Now she's a force to be reckoned with. Which is why it surprised me that my dad was the one who went off on me about George"
"George?" she turns to look at me, I pick up my cup of coffee and take a sip, setting it back down I nod "that's my ex"
"the one who proposed" she asks, I laugh and nod "there hasn't been anyone else"
"why?" she blurts out, I could tell she was a bit embarrassed about it "I mean how, you're" she stop and I watch her visibly swallow "you're beautiful" I smile and reach over to touch her leg, "thank you" our eyes lock and I felt us both start to lean towards each other, but just before our lips meet, the sound of the door slamming shut breaks us apart. Dammit, I curse, in my head of course. She closes her eyes, and we sit back in our chairs when Alex comes into view, coffee cup in his hand. "oh hi" he smiles as he takes a seat in the empty chair.
"good morning" I smile
"morning" Arizona grunts, I have to hold back my laugh
"looks like it's going to be a nice day, good thing cuz we've got lots of work to do" he says looking out over the field, the sun was now over the horizon, and birds chirping around us.
"yeah good thing" Arizona says taking a drink of her coffee then stands "I'm going to get dressed and get started" she says disappearing into the house. I let out a sigh and sit back in the chair, my mind on the near kiss we almost shared "did I ruin a moment?" Alex's voice cuts through my thoughts. For a moment I contemplate telling him the truth but decide to let it go, shaking my head "no"
"oh" he leans forward grabbing the pack of Marlboro's, holding it up as if asking me if I want one, shaking my head, he nods and lights one. "so I was thinking we could take a ride over to the Kepner's maybe see if they've seen your car"
"you really think it's in their barn?"
"could be" he shrugs then laughs "everything seems to end up there" he turns to look at me "but it's probably in the middle of the field though, which will be tough getting it out" he takes a puff off the cigarette letting it out the smoke hung in the air before floating away "one storm we had, we had the top of the old chicken coup fly off and land in that field, took us a week to find it"
"oh?" I look at him, he smiles. His smile was nice, but nothing like Arizona's, I chance a look at the door to see if she's coming yet. "you like her?" he says quietly
"I, I" I let out a sigh and sit back in the chair. "I'm not sure"
"I can tell she's into you, which is surprising she hasn't been into anyone in a very, very long time" I look at him with a confused look "that's not my story to tell" he pats me on the leg, stomping out his cigarette in the ashtray "I've gotta get dressed" he stands and leaves me alone with my thoughts. He could tell she was into me, I let out a sigh and look out over the corn. I really wanted that kiss, maybe by the end of the day. Shaking my head, I stand, making my way inside, finding Arizona standing in the kitchen "you wouldn't happen to have some more clothes I can use, you know to scoop the poop in?" I laugh when I see her jump and turn around holding her heart "you scared me"
"sorry" I laugh
"you can wear that if you want" she looks down at my feet "what size shoe are you?"
"8" I say, seeing her nod, then head to the closet pulling out an old pair of work boots "these should fit, I'll get you some socks"
"thanks" I smile, realizing then that I had yet to use the bathroom "I just gotta" I nod towards the bathroom and see her nod. Please tell me this isn't going to be awkward now. Coming out of the bathroom, the smell of bacon is evident, making my way into the kitchen "all I'm saying is she's into you, you have to go for it" Alex's voice was heard
"leave it alone Alex" Arizona says in a tone I had yet to hear come out of her
"I'm just saying" Alex says turning around "hi" he says when he sees me
"hi" I see that the cups from the porch are now on the table, which is set with plates "hope you like bacon" he says sitting down at the table "Zo loves it, it's all we eat in the morning"
"shut up" Arizona mutters from the stove "I'm making pancakes too"
"yum" I say and join Alex at the table, as he starts rambling about what has to be done today. I again offer my help, and Arizona tells him that I'm going to help in the kennel, causing him to laugh. I know I look like I've never done hard labor in my life, but I have, and I'll show them I can hold my own. Daniel joins us, and soon we are done eating and washing up. Arizona had gotten me a pair of socks and the boots fit perfectly. I'm now, ankle deep in water scrubbing one of the dogs pens, Arizona was right, it was a mess in here, but oddly when you first walked in you couldn't smell it. I wonder what they use to keep the smell out. I think to myself as I scrub "break time" Daniel calls out, I look up and he's standing by the door with two cans, I couldn't tell what they were. "come on, let's sit for a bit, this old man can't do it like he used to" I laugh, leaning the brush I was using against a wall and walk towards him. He leads me outside, and we sit. Today it was cooler than yesterday, thank god, I couldn't imagine doing all this in the heat of yesterday. Looking around I see Arizona and Alex putting the fence back together, every so often I could hear Arizona tell Alex to shut up. "they fight like siblings"
"yeah they do" Daniel laughs "Alex is the closest thing to a brother Zo has" he adds as we watch the two work "after Barbara died, she" he lets out a sigh "she kind of closed herself off from anyone, Alex was the only one she let in."
"how long has she been gone?" I ask not sure if I should but if you want answers you have to ask the questions "20 years next month" he offers "she took it hard, I've" he stops shaking his head "I wasn't there much when she was growing up" he shakes his head, "with the farm work, and driving truck during the winter" this is when I actually get a good look at the man, Arizona looks a lot like him, but she also looks like her mom. A great combination of both of them, I briefly wonder what her kids would look like. Shaking that thought away, as the phone rings inside the kennel. Daniel let's out a groan and stands, I smile at him and stay where I'm at but I can hear him "Robbins Kennel" he's quiet a moment "hey John, what's up" I can hear him try not to laugh, and says "they're out fixing the fence right now but I'm sure they'd be happy to come on over once they're done" he's quiet again, and I stopped listening, my focus was on Arizona, and the way she moved. I hear foot steps and look up "that was Mr. Kepner" I look up at the man "apparently there's a car in his barn" you would think I would be in shock, or pissed that my car was ruined, but my first reaction was to laugh. Daniel was laughing too, "he wants wonder woman and superman to go over and get it out"
"oh?" I look at him, and laugh at the nicknames, he nods, "Arizona and Alex are the first two he calls, everyone around here knows they'll jump at the chance to help" a string of curse words are heard from where the two are nailing in a piece of wood. "hey why don't you two take a break" Daniel calls out, causing them both to look at him. He waves them over, you wouldn't be able to tell they were in their 40's with the way the act, Alex had actually pushed Arizona, who almost fell into the mud. "asshole" Arizona yells and takes off after him. Shaking my head at their antics, I hear Daniel address them "so Kepner just called"
"why?" Alex asked out of breath
"well apparently there's a car in his barn" they take a moment to laugh and Alex looks at me "at least we know where it went" I nod, not knowing what else to say, as Daniel continues "he was wondering if you two would go over and help him out" there was more said but I tuned it out. Instead focusing on a bead of sweat that was running down Arizona's chest, and right down between her cleavage. By the time I came out of my thoughts Alex had run off, and Arizona was looking at me with a confused look on her face. I smile, when I hear her laugh "you alright here? While we go?"
"yes, your dad is good company" I say hearing her let out a laugh "yeah he's great company" it wasn't long before a huge Ford F450 pulls up, with a trailer and Alex at the wheel "you coming?" he asks looking at Arizona who nods and gets in. "we'll be back" she calls out as Alex drives the truck forward.
"who knows how long they will be gone" Daniel says "we should get back to work" I nod and stand to follow him back inside. They didn't have many dogs at the moment, which was probably a good thing, we were already about half done. A couple hours later, I was leading one of the dogs back from doing its business outside when the crunching of gravel was heard. "they must be back" Daniel says coming out of the office area. I put the dog inside the kennel and followed him outside, and sure enough it was Arizona and Alex, and they had my beat-up car on the trailer. Alex stops the truck in front of Daniel and I and they get out "believe it or not, but it still drives."
"I don't think you wanna try driving it back to town though" Arizona says coming around the truck "but if you need anything out of it" she nods towards it.
"my phone would be nice" I laugh "although I'm sure it's dead by now" I watch as Arizona jumps up on the trailer opening the door. The windshield was smashed, and the door creaked as she opened it. Finding my phone right away, she tosses it down to me. "in the center counsel there's a charger" I didn't even finish what I was saying as the charger was tossed to me also. "anything else?"
"not at the moment" I smile and watch as she jumps down, pressing the button on my phone, I'm not surprised when it didn't turn on "you can plug it in, in the office" Daniel says leading me inside. Did I really want to turn it on? Being out here without a cell phone, the last day, was rather relaxing. I never realized how addicted to the damn thing I am. Not to mention how annoying it is, I'm thinking all this as I plug in, and wait a few moments until it has enough juice to turn on. Hitting the power button, it takes forever but when it finally is loaded, I'm bombarded with notification sounds. Letting out a groan, I scan through them, noting I had a bunch of texts from my parents. I read them quick and swipe them away. Deciding to just leave it plugged in I head back outside, where Alex and Arizona are now talking about what to do with my car. "I say we just leave it on the trailer, until she's ready to go home" Alex says. Ready to go home, do I want to go home? I like it here, I've never felt more at home at a place in my entire life. Well there was that one vacation I took to Australia, I felt at home there, but that was because I was right on the beach. I've always felt at home when I'm at a beach. I'm about to give my input on what to do with the car when I hear my phone start ringing with my dad's ringtone. Rolling my eyes I step closer to the trailer "what do you think?" Arizona asks, her voice was soft, and when I turned to look at her the smile that was on her face sent my heart racing. "I'm not sure" I shrug "It'd be less work if you just left it" I stopped talking.
"until you're ready to leave" she says quietly, something inside me told me she didn't want me to leave either. Meeting her eyes I nod "alright then, I'll just pull the truck around back" Alex says and drives off. "we're almost done in here, then I'll get some lunch started" Daniel says heading back into the kennel. I look at Arizona again, who is focused on something on the ground. She kicks at a rock "just let me know when you're ready to head home and I'll take you"
"thank you" I say reaching out for her hand, taking it, again I feel the electricity run through my body "but to be completely honest I love it here" I admit quietly, I can see a small smile spread across her face, as she laces our fingers together "I like having you here" her voice is quiet but sincere. I felt myself leaning into her, our lips about to touch, when Daniel calls out from inside the kennel "some help in here would be great, and someone please shut that damn thing off" Arizona and I both let out a laugh, "maybe I should have left it turned off"
"just turn the ringer off, everything annoys him, he's old" Arizona says "tell him I'll get lunch started" she said squeezing my hand and letting go, I stood there watching her as she makes her way to the house. Feeling all sorts of feelings, I had never felt before, could this be love? No, I shake the thought away, I just met her, I couldn't be feeling that this soon. It may not be love, but it's something. I head back inside to finish the job I had started. Once Daniel and I are finally done, Arizona comes telling us lunch was ready. Walking into the house the smell of bacon is evident, yet again, and I have to hold back a laugh when I see a pile of it on the table. I excuse myself to the bathroom to wash up, when I enter the room again the three of them are at the table laughing about something. "hope you don't mind burgers" Arizona looks up meeting my eyes. Smiling I say "burgers sound amazing" taking my seat, trying to hold back my laugh when I think of it as mine, I've only been here a day, not even yet, and I'm already taking over a chair at the kitchen table. The burgers were amazing, Arizona had really outdone herself. "did you guys get everything done?" Daniel asks, once everyone was done eating.
"pretty much" Arizona says, as she stands reaching for my plate and placing them in the sink. I smile my thanks, and go to stand, intending on offering to do the dishes. My words are never said as the sound of tires on gravel can be heard. "who the hell is here?" Daniel asks, standing from his chair, his plate in his hand, he drops it in the sink and makes his way to the door. I hear the engine turn off and the sound of a car door shutting, as Daniel steps out on the back porch, the old wooden door slamming behind him. "who is it?" Alex's voice is heard, I watch as Arizona, looks out the window, then turns to me. "I'm not 100% sure but I think it's your dad"
"my dad?" I ask confused "how the hell did he find me?" I see both Alex and Arizona shrug their shoulders, as Arizona turns on the water and starts cleaning up after lunch. The old screen door creaks open "Callie" Daniel says "it's for you" I let out a groan, making my way to the door. Before I leave I turn back and look at Arizona, our eyes meet for a moment, until she looks away. Letting out a sigh, I make my way outside. My dad is leaning against his car, his arms crossed, rolling my eyes I make my way closer "hi" I say hesitantly.
"hi" he shakes his head "that's all you have to say to me is hi?"
"what do you want me to say" I cross my arms, mimicking his pose
"a phone call would have been nice; you know to let your mother and I know you are alive"
"how'd you find me?" I ask
"your cell phone" he says, of course he tracked me, I roll my eyes, shaking my head "what the hell happened to your car?" he asks, I look up and see him making his way to my smashed up car.
"the tornado picked it up" I say, trying not to laugh as I said the next part "and apparently it ended up in the barn of a farm down the road"
"Calliope" he shakes his head
"what" I look at him, he's giving me that look I used to get when I was a teenager, I see him visibly take a deep breath "you had your mother and I worried to death"
"sorry" I mutter, now feeling like I did when I was a teenager "I just" I'm cut off when I hear the screen door to the house shut, when I look over I see Arizona standing there. Clearing my throat, I decide to introduce them "dad this is Arizona, Arizona this is my dad"
"hello Mr. Torres" Arizona says politely, my dad just grunts, letting me know he does not approve. Arizona shakes her head, and steps down off the porch "I know the car is messed up, I can drive it back to town, if you want" she says looking at me, I shrug. No that's not what I want, what I want is to stay here, where life is easier, and I don't have to deal with my fucked-up life. "I can call Mark"
"no don't call Mark, it's already on the trailer, Arizona can take it to the shop"
"more like the junk yard" he mutters "how could you be so careless and reckless" he starts to go off
"excuse me" I meet is eyes
"I just don't understand what has gotten into you lately" he walks toward me "first with George, and now this" he motions to the car then shakes his head. I'm not sure where Arizona went, but I can feel that she's still around somewhere, just not where I can see her. "you'll never understand" I shake my head.
"understand what?" he asks "George was"
"George was George, daddy, I was never in love with him, you and mom both know that"
"you could have said yes, you need a good man to take care of you"
"let's not do this here" I mutter
"we will do this whenever and wherever I want to" he says raising his voice and standing tall, rolling my eyes I knew this was a lost cause, but I'm not about to give in.
"daddy, lets not do this here, you want to yell at me about it? Then yell at me when we get home" I look at Arizona, she turns and heads back into the house. Daniel was still standing on the porch. I can see Alex standing in the doorway of the kennel.
"I'll get Zo" Daniel says turning to head into the house
"I'll do it Pop" Alex says coming around the truck, I see them make eye contact then Daniel nods, and goes into the house, the screen door slamming behind him.
"just give me a minute" I say looking at my dad "I have to grab my stuff" I see him roll his eyes. Turning I slowly open the screen door, not seeing Arizona anywhere. As I make my way farther into the kitchen Daniel is standing at the sink "she's upstairs"
"Daniel, I" I really didn't know what to say, letting out a sigh "thank you for everything" he turns towards me "it was my pleasure" he smiles, then nods towards the stairs "she's in her room" I nod and make my way to the stairs, slowly climbing them. I first pass my room, well not my room but the room I slept in last night. And stand outside the door Arizona said was hers. I couldn't knock, I was too afraid of the look on her face. Instead I went into my room and changed, folding the clothes neatly and leaving them on the bed. Trying again I raise my hand to Arizona's door, knocking quietly, it took a minute until I heard movement inside and the door opens "hi" I smile sadly.
"you're leaving" she says, I could tell it wasn't a question, another sad smile and I nod "Alex is going to" I didn't need to finish.
"ok" she nods "that's probably better he does it than me anyway"
"why?" I ask
"because the more time I spend with you the more time I want to spend with you" she says softly.
"I feel the same" I step forward and reach out, pulling her into me. My heart was racing, and I could feel hers through the thin tank top she was wearing. "thank you for saving me" I whisper, she doesn't say anything, just holds onto me tighter. When I let go, I grab onto her hands and squeeze, I know if I don't go now I never will. So I let go of her hands and take a step back. "I'll see you around" still she doesn't say anything just nods, as I turn to leave. I could feel my heart breaking as I made my way down the stairs and out the door.
So? :)
