Wednesday is named after Woden (Odin) who is chief of the Norse Gods and governs death. When a warrior dies in battle Odin sends a Valkyrie who is one of a host of female figures who guide souls of the dead to the god Odin's hall Valhalla.
Wednesday in Spanish is called Miercoles, named after Mercury, AKA Hermes (/ˈhɜːrmiːz/; Greek: Ἑρμῆς) is an Olympian deity in ancient Greek religion and mythology considered the herald of the gods. He is also considered the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and orators. He is able to move quickly and freely between the worlds of the mortal and the divine aided by his winged sandals. Hermes plays the role of the psychopomp or "soul guide"—a conductor of souls into the afterlife.
Fun facts: Why is Wednesday (The character) called Merlina in Spanish?
In Spanish, she is known as "Merlina," which is derived from the Spanish word for "blackbird." This nickname is appropriate for Wednesday, given her dark and mysterious personality. It also ties into the Addams Family's love of all things macabre and unusual.
Ms. Wednesday is also an icon of both the Goth as well as the Bisexual/Pansexual/Queer Communities.
