...
It had been 10 days 14hours and 29 minutes since Arizona was out from her last surgery.
No sign of her waking up Arizona was stable. But, It meant Arizona wasn't getting better but she wasn't getting worse either.
It was what was frustrating Callie right now.
She was by Arizona's side as soon as she was able, but she also had to take care of her children and still work. She was helped by her friends of course, but weirdly she was feeling alone.
She hadn't felt this lonely for years, ever since Arizona was drowning in her depression and was letting Callie take care of everything, on her own.
And she was devastated. She had this weird feeling; Arizona wasn't fighting to get back to her and their family. She sat next to her for hours, holding her cold and pale hand, talking to her, stroking her hair. She was praying to God every day to help her in these dark moments.
And she was waiting, waiting for the woman she loved to react to anything.
She was just asleep, sat on a chair, her head on Arizona's bed, still holding her hand. She would wake up with stiffness in all of her body one more time.
She didn't hear the light knock on the door.
It was her parents who had been told by Mark About the situation. Callie didn't want to tell them what was happening because the elderly couple was still holding a grudge towards Arizona for their daughter's divorce. They knew it wasn't fair to the blonde, because she had been nothing but an amazing wife to Callie before the couple split up.
They never understood why both women hadn't sought help whilst going through the tragedy of losing Terry.
And when Callie had informed them she had found love with another woman, they hadn't accepted it and refused to meet Penny.
But now, they were here and what they were seeing brought tears to their eyes.
Carlos walked in the room first, Lucia was still saddened by the terrible scene, a hand over her mouth in shock.
Arizona seemed like she was already gone, laying in the bed, her skin was pale, and all the machines and wires weren't helping.
« Mija... » Carlos whispered in Callie's ear, taping her shoulder. « Calliope, wake up honey, we're here? »
Callie slightly opened her eyes and found her father's blue eyes offering her support and love.
She stood up and immediately burst into sobs in the older man's arms.
Carlos held his daughter for a moment, while Lucia approached the bed, and bent and kissed Arizona's cheek before joining her daughter and husband.
She hugged them both, unable to restrain the tears.
As the embrace was over, Callie sat back and grabbed Arizona's hand again, kissing her fingers softly.
« Mark called us Calliope. Why didn't you tell us? » Carlos asked. « We are your parents; we have to be here for you. »
« I... I didn't want to bother you. Arizona is no longer a part of your family, and I know you aren't really close to her anymore... »
« It doesn't matter, Arizona is the mother of our grandchildren, we want to be here for her and for them. » Lucia said. « And it seems that you've been closer to her lately? »
« No... Yes... I don't know... » Callie replied. « I'm just so exhausted, and I just want her to be okay... »
« We know what happened Calliope, Mark told us everything »... Carlos confessed.
« Oh... So we are going to hear the, I told you so speech? » Callie snapped. « I don't have time for that dad. If you think I don't realise that I've messed up. The love of my life is lying in that bed because my crazy ex-girlfriend tried to kill her ! I know that. It's all my fault... »
She screamed in rage and tears at the same time, as her mother rushed to embrace her again.
« It's not your fault Calliope. That woman was sick. This is on her, not you. » Lucia said. « And I'm so happy that you realise Arizona is your only true love. »
« Stop it Mom. We are not together. We were working on our problems for the kid's sake. We were getting closer. But we are not together. » Callie précised. « But now I'm sure I love her. I love her so much it hurts. She can't leave us. Not now, not like this... »
….
Seeing and talking with her parents had been a welcome breath of fresh hair for Callie. She had taken the day off, and they had spent it together, with Travis and Olivia.
The children were over the moon to see their grandparents.
Lucia and Carlos had offered to look after the kids for a few days to help their daughter get some rest.
Callie was grateful. She knew the children needed the distraction and it was the perfect timing.
They were asking to see their mother every day, and she had to repeat it was not possible, and each time it was breaking her heart.
So, four days later, when she was back at the hospital, she would ask Dr Stanfield one more time.
She walked by the nurse's station and was about to open the door when she saw two doctors around Arizona's bed, talking to Barbara who was listening intently, not showing any signs of emotion. She was just nodding.
Callie immediately worried and entered the room.
« What's going on? Barbara, are you okay? » Callie asked as she approached the bed and as soon as she saw Arizona she gasped and stood there wide eyed. But as fast as the excitement had made her smile, the cold reality struck back.
« She opened her eyes Callie... » Barbara sadly smiled. « And she can breathe on her own... »
« As we were explaining to Mrs Robbins, her daughter has woken up from her coma, but she is in a vegetative state. » the younger doctor explained.
« But she's going to wake up, it's a good sign, right Callie? » Barbara asked.
« I... I don't know Barbara. It means she's not totally back among us for the moment... » Callie sadly replied.
« She's showing signs of brain activity, so she should wake up totally. But we can't say when and how. She might suffer some repercussions. She lost a lot of blood, and her brain lacked oxygen for a while... »the doctor said. « Her motor skills are responsive. So, we are hoping when she wakes up fully, she will make a full recovery. For now, you need to talk to her, stimulate her. Ask her friends to visit her, play the music she likes... »
« Does that mean her children can visit? » Barbara asked.
« She will be transferred out of the ICU this afternoon, so yes they will be able to see her. But you will have to prepare them. »
« I... We know, thank you... » Callie replied wanted nothing more than to have a moment with Arizona alone.
« Mrs Robbins, we have some papers for you to sign, can you come with us? » The doctor asked.
« Of course. » Barbara replied. « Can you stay with her for a moment Callie ? »
The ortho surgeon nodded as the three of them walked out of the room.
Callie immediately settled on the bed and stared at her ex-wife, before taking her hand.
Her blue eyes were finally open, but they were empty. Arizona's skin was a little less pale.
Callie was smiling at her, cupping her face, hoping for a positive outcome soon.
« Hey, I'm here. » She said. « I've been here every day, and I have to say I've been so worried. And I know you are coming back. It's just the first step. You are coming back to us, to Travis, to Olivia and maybe a little to me? »
She leaned in and kissed Arizona's lips chastely.
« I need you Arizona. I need you because I can't do it alone. I tried once and look at the mess I made of that. » She sadly said. « I need you... The kids are going crazy not seeing you. They ask about you all the time. Even my parents are here for you. Everybody wants you back and all your friends are here looking after you every day. And your mother, she's so strong. You are like her, you know. She's brave and caring. She needs you too. »
Suddenly Callie felt Arizona's fingers squeeze hers.
« Oh my... Arizona? I'm here darling... » She said, waiting for another gesture.
But nothing really happened. Was it a willing movement or muscular spasm? Callie hated this.
« You have all the time you need, but don't keep us hanging too long... » She smiled at the blonde. « Because you know I hate waiting... You always say that waiting is not my thing... And you are right. Because I can't wait for you to be really awake to tell you I love you. »
