...
It had been four months since Arizona had opened her eyes, and nothing had changed.
Callie and her children had created a kind of daily routine.
The family had decided for the kids to move into Arizona's place permanently so Barbara was not alone.
Callie stayed with them a few nights a week and the other nights, April, Mark and even Miranda came to spend the night.
Callie had asked to have a lighter schedule at the hospital so that she could spend time with her children and visit Arizona as often as possible.
Her parents had headed back to Florida, but they returned at least a weekend a month to take of their daughter and Grand children.
So every day, after school, Callie and the children went to the hospital and spent time with Arizona, talking about their day, listening to music, doing everything they could to bring her back to them.
This particular day, Olivia was sick with a stomach bug, so there was only Callie and their son visiting. Needing to call the lab for some results for a patient, Callie had left the room for a few minutes.
While Alone with his mother, Travis approached her. The young boy was so sad to see her like that. He was used to spending time laughing with his Mommy. They were very close and he misses her very much.
« You know Mommy, I love you. And I think I would love to have a little brother. I know I have one, but he's not with us anymore. And I miss him so much. But I am the only man in this Family... Well there is Abuelo, But he's not always here. » The little boy said. « But I want you to wake up more than I want a brother. Because it's not the same without you. Mama is here but she is sad all the time. I know she's trying to hide it, but It's not always working. Granny it's the same as her. Olivia too... Would you please come back, for us ? For me ? »
The little boy sniffed, quickly wiping the tears from his eyes.
« Please ? » he asked as he noticed Arizona's eyes weren't staring into space anymore, they were focused on him.
He frowned, not knowing if it was something meaningful but it was the first time there was a change.
« Mommy you heard me ? » He asked.
Arizona tried to raised her arms and speak but she was unable to do anything. Her lips were shaking and immediately her BP increase. The sound of the machine alerted the nurses who rushed to the rooms, paging the doctors.
« She's awake ! » Travis said as the nurses came in checking Arizona's status.
Callie was back from her call when she noticed the turmoil around the room. She quickened her walk and rushed to her son.
« Mama, she looked at me and then she tried to talk. » Travis explained.
« It's okay baby. We have to get out of the room and let the doctor check on Mama. »
….
One hour later, Callie and Barbara were in the waiting room. Mark had taken Travis home.
The two women were nervously expecting the doctors to talk to them ; so when he eventually showed up, they stood up immediately and stared at him in hope.
« Mrs Robbins, Dr Torres. » Dr Stanfield greeted them. « We have examined Dr Robbins, both a physical and neurological check up. What I can tell you is that from a medical point of view, everything is good. Her brain is functioning, her motor skills are intact. But there is some issues. »
Callie clenched her fists. She knew there was risk Arizona would suffer from aftermath, but now she was about to know the extend of the damage.
« She has not lost her memory, but we think she might have trouble with her short term memory. It means she might have a problem retaining and remembering new information. It's not something irreversible. She's going to need a lot of work with a professional, but she might recover completely. Her speech is a little slow right now, but it has already improved during our examination. Physically, she seemed to have difficulty coordinating her movements. But this is something that will get better with some help, we hope. We just have to give her time and support her. She's a doctor so she knows it's going to need time and work. We have talked about it with her, and she's totally aware of her situation. »
….
A few minutes later, Barbara was in shock, and wasn't feeling ready to go and be her daughter's side. She asked Callie to be the first person to go and support her, making sure Barbara was OK, she readily agreed.
She walked down the hallway leading to the room, not really sure about how the meeting would go.
She stood outside the room for a moment, looking through the window. Arizona was in a sitting position, apparently focusing on opening and closing her fist.
« Hi. » Callie calmly said, opening the door.
She walked to Arizona's side, sitting on the bed. The blonde looked at her and frowned. It made Callie nervous for a second.
« So I'm waiting? » Arizona asked.
« What ? » Callie asked.
« I heard everything you know... »
« Arizona... what are you talking about ? » Callie asked. « You've been asleep for so long, we've been here everyday, so I don't know what you are talking about... »
Arizona frowned again and smiled. « I... I don't r.r. what I was talking about. »
The goofy smile on Arizona's face made Callie laughed. She was relieved. Even if she had just been with her for a few minutes, the aftermath of Arizona's accident wasn't as serious as she thought.
« How are you doing ? » Callie asked. « The doctors told us about your condition. Are you all right ? »
« Yeah... » Arizona said in a whisper. « I...I have some issues, but it's going to be okay. Tell me, how are the kids. I missed them so much. I wanted s.s.s. So badly to interact with them when t.t. were here... »
« They are great. They are going to be so happy and crazy when they see you. » Callie said « We came everyday. »
« I know. » Arizona replied.
She looked at her hand and move her arms slowly toward Callie's hand. Once she had placed her hand on Callies, she tried to grasp it. Seeing her struggling, Callie turned her hand over and intertwined their fingers together.
« Listen Arizona, I want to apologize, for everything. » Callie said, her voice cracking. You were attacked, and it was because of me. »
« I d. 't understand... »
« The person who assaulted you it was... »
« Penny Blake... » Arizona cut her off. « I know Callie. And I know w. happened to her. »
Callie's eyes filled with tears. « I'm so sorry... »
« You have nothing t. be sorry for Callie. You are not responsible for that woman's actions » Arizona said. « And I'm sorry for your loss. »
Callie raised her head and gulped. « What ? »
« She had been a part of your life Callie. Even if I.I.I n. like her, she was with you for two years. You shared m. together, you were building something. So, even if things did change, you are allowed to feel a loss. » Arizona said.
« Can we not talk about her right now ? » Callie asked.
« Sure... T.t. me about my mother, is she ok ? » Arizona worried.
« She is strong Arizona, but your assault had done a number on her. » Callie explained. « She's exhausted right now. I know you are going to need support, but so will she. »
« And it's the same for you Callie. Y.y. 've been here everyday and you had to work and take c.c. of the kids. » Arizona said. « So you must be exhausted too. I don't want to be a b.b. for anybody, that's why I think I will go to a specialized rehab centre for my PT and everything. »
« Hey you've been awake fo what, two hours and you are already thinking about that ? » Callie laughed.
« I heard everything Callie, I told you earlier. I.I.I was just unable to answer. » Arizona précised.
« And you haven't answer my question b. the way. »
« What ? » Callie asked.
« Is it true ? » Arizona repeated.
« Arizona ? What is it with that question ? Be more specific... »
« You kissed me out of nowhere when I was laying in that bed, with no possibility to escape. Smooth m. Torres... » Arizona smirked as Callie's cheek reddened. « So I.I.I want to know if it's true... So I'm waiting... »
« Arizona... » Callie sighed. « I don't understand... »
Arizona smiled at her and leaned in to peck Callie's lips before whispering in Callie's ear. « I'm waiting for you to tell me you love me... ».
