Day and Night

Chapter 32

"Dead end?" Matt Bluestone asked, the man dressed in the usual detective's rumpled suit. He had an overcoat, very battered, to block out the rain. He was in the busy squad room, standing beside a fellow officer's desk.

Detective Catherine Devane shrugged as she told him, "Yes and no." She drank some of bher now cold coffee and said, We've got witnesses it was the Pack, specifically Jackal and Hyena, but they've gone to ground."

After the bank robbery, EVERYONE was looking for the Pack. Sadly, wherever they were based was secret and very secure. No one had heard a peep. Which, considering the bounty on them, was kind of surprising.

"And the rank and file cops also don't give much of a fuck," Catherine also admitted with a tired sigh.

"True," Matt sighed.

While on paper the police were supposed to investigate all cases equally, this kind of crime wasn't considered a huge priority. YES, it was a murder, but the three victims were hired killers. So the beat cops really did not care that much...

"Well, as I said we've got witnesses and some trace evidence," Catherine added, "if we can find the Pack, we can prosecute them. It's just finding them."

"I'll try to get the beat cops off their asses," Matt agreed.

"Good luck," Catherine added wryly.

Catherine worked hard, following up leads on another case, then accompanying officers to make an arrest. By six at night, she was exhausted and headed home.

"Hey, mom!" her son, William, called as she entered the apartment. Her son was spending a week with her, as part of the joint custody arrangement with her ex.

"Hope you haven't been too bored," Catherine smiled at the teen as she took off her suit jacket and locked up her gun.

"Nah, it's fine," Will answered mildly. "Can we get takeout?" he asked.

"Are you implying I can't cook?" Catherine asked.

"Well..." the boy drawled.

"Little shit," Catherine muttered then they both laughed. "Chinese?" she suggested as she pulled out her phone.

"Please," the boy grinned.

Anton Sevarius smiled as he saw the photos of his niece, Alicia, with Dominique Destine. The two were CLEARLY dating... He had acquired the photos via a contact in the city government, whom he paid off well.

"Hurrr," the patient groaned.

"I wonder how Alicia would react to knowing Dominique is Demona?" Anton wondered aloud, putting the photos aside.

"Augh..." the test subject continued.

"Mind you, Demona is herself quite attractive," Anton then mused, "it's quite possible that Alicia won't mind..."

The test subject writhed on the table, but Anton mostly ignored it. He was a modified mutate, similar to Talon, and was intended to be an improved combat type. He included several new traits that Anton hoped would be useful, too.

"Open wide!" Anton ordered cheerfull, bending over the subject and clamping the mouth open to peer inside.

The venom sacks in the back of the mouth were developing nicely. When angered, the new mutate would be able to spray venom several feet... it was also quite corrosive. Hopefully, it would do serious damage to Xanatos' Steel Clan armor.

"All right, back to sleep," Anton sedated the man.

The other subject floated in a chemical bath nearby, as her body healed. Her long red hair fluttered in the current, eyes closed as she breathed through an oxygen mask. Her body was lined with surgical scars, but they were healing over fast.

"And you, my new assassin model," Anton mused.

She was designed to look entirely human, with her various augments all hidden until activation. Like the male she had venom sacks, as well as extendable finger claws and greater base levels of strength. He intended to sell her type to the highest bidder. Her eyes suddenly popped open, and she LUNGED at Anton violently.

"Eep!" he yelped.

The woman hammered at the thick plastic wall, glaring at him. In seconds an automatic system sedated her, and she soon slumped.

Anton adjusted his lab coat as he muttered, "I'll need to work on the brainwashing... I need you timid until you hit your target."

A chime indicated a customer was there, so with a sigh he hurried out of the lab.

"Oh GOD I want her to have her way with me!" Alicia bust out.

It was night, and she was sitting in her apartment watching TV. She had been dating Dominique for a week, and was starting to realize her former boss was a bit... odd.

Dominique was WIERDLY gentlemanly, or something. Which was nice, admittedly, but she absolutely would not be aggressive with her. At all.

"Even when I WANT her to," Alicia muttered.

Not that Alicia wanted to get ravaged, or anything. But...

"Argh," Alicia sighed.

And she absolutely would not go out at night. At all. She didn't notice at first, but Dominique always booked everything they did so that they ended well before nightfall. Did she have somne kind of phobia, or something?

"Maybe she turns into a monster at night," Alicia sighed, then laughed uncomfortably.

Alicia sighed. At some point she was going to have to ask her about it.

Alicia jumped as her phone rang. "Yes?" she answered, not looking at the call display.

"Alicia!" her mom said cheerfully, "I got your package. Thank you."

"I actually got the samples from a client," Alicia admitted, "but I thought you'd like them."

"It was so thoughtful, thank you," Mom said.

Her mother paused, and Alicia wondered what she might be preparing to say.

"I saw something in the gossip column about you," Mom noted, "you're dating Ms Dustine?"

Alicia blinked as she confessed, "I guess I should have told you..."

"I'm just happy you found someone," Mom answered warmly. "So... when are you bringing her home?" she asked.

"Moooooom," Alicia groaned.

"Hey! I want to meet here. I need to know she's right for you," Mom teased.

"I'll try to set something up," Alicia promised.

"So you two are DATING!" Fox Xanatos teased.

Demona groaned, the gargoyle woman sitting in Fox' office in the castle above New York. She had stopped in to talk, as Fox was one of the few she could talk to about personal stuff.

"And I had to see it in the paper?" Fox added, teasingly.

Demona sighed, "I actually didn't anticipate the gossip columns grabbing it."

"You are a famous business woman," Fox noted. She added, "And you haven't been seen out much, either."

"Point," Demona admitted.

Fox sipped a drink, then put it down. "You called, asking if I could see you tonight?" she asked, looking at her thoughtfully.

Demona fidgeted a bit, "This is... embarrassing."

"Hmm?" Fox prompted.

Demona sipped the water she had been given. "I... well," she paused then Demona just blurted out, "I'm a virgin."

"What." Fox blinked.

Demona squirmed, "In my human form, I mean. Obviously not as a gargoyle."

Fox nodded, aware that Demona had had kids in the past. "So..?" she frowned.

"I'm... not sure what to DO with Alicia," Demona admitted sheepishly.

Fox blinked as she processed that. "There are no lesbian gargoyles?" she asked, frowning.

"There probably are," Demona admitted, "but I have no experience with this. At all."

"I hadn't really thought of that," Fox admitted.

"We do mate for pleasure, somewhat," Demona admitted, "But we're very... rough, by human standards. I don't want to risk hurting her."

Fox nodded, "And when you and Macbeth dated...?"

"We didn't do anything," Demona waved it off, as she explained"I think he intended to wait until we were wed."

"I guess that makes sense," Fox nodded. She took out a tablet and accessed something, "Well, you have some reading to do."

"Huh?" Demona blinked as she looked at the device. A ebook was open, 'The Joy of Lesbian Sex.' She flushed, "What?"

"Well, you need to learn SOMEHOW," Fox said. "Or I could find you a volunteer."

"No!" Demona scowled and Fox just laughed.

To be continued...

Notes: More cops, more Anton. I always like him.. is that odd? Heh.

It occurred to me that Dominique's not going out at night would get noticed eventually. Especially if you were actually dating her.
