EPILOGUE
In the dimly lit confines of Maximum security, cell 98, Mikasa sat quietly in her bed, reflecting on the past month's events. The cell door creaked open, and Mikasa sat upright, her breathing hastened as she caught sight of Shikamaru accompanied by two guards staring into her cell. Expecting to see a familiar face wielding a briefcase, she sighed in relief as the guards stepped aside to allow Naruto inside the cell. Naruto gave Shikamaru a nod of reassurance before the latter stood back, letting him approach.
"How are we doing?" Naruto walked over to her bed and sat down next to her.
"I'm fine."
Naruto studied her, noticing her complexion had returned and her pale hair was back to it's jet black hue. Mikasa nervously shuffled away from him, turning her attention to a single dark spot of the floor. Naruto felt himself start sweating in the cool room as he opened his mouth to speak.
"You're going to start doing community service next weekend, I just wanted to let you know."
"I understand." Mikasa replied dryly. The two of them sat in silence for a moment until Naruto moved closer, sitting on the edge of her bed.
"I've been thinking a lot about you and everything that's happened. About how you were robbed of a normal childhood by those who twisted you into what you became."
Mikasa's eyes softened, a flicker of pain crossing her face.
Naruto reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder. "That's why I want to give you something different now. A chance to experience the kindness and care that you missed out on. To show you that there's more to life than what you've known."
Tears welled up in Mikasa's eyes, her voice trembling as she spoke. "Naruto, do you really believe someone like me can find lasting peace?"
Naruto's eyes were filled with unwavering determination. "Yes, I do. As long as there are people willing to forgive, to give second chances, and to believe in each other, peace is possible. You've already taken the first step by reviving those you harmed. That's proof enough for me."
Mikasa's felt her heart swell with a mix of gratitude and hope. "Your belief in me Naruto… it means more than you could ever know." She shifted her gaze to the ceiling, a single green orb focused on a soft ray of light emanating from a light bulb.
"I grew up believing in only one path to true prosperity for our world, one littered with the heavy cost of sacrifice." Mikasa paused to take a breath. "But now as I sit here, paying the price for my actions, I can't help but think that if there are more people like you in this world, then maybe lasting peace isn't just a dream."
Naruto smiled, his hand still resting on her shoulder. "We'll work towards it together, Mikasa. One step at a time. You're not alone in this anymore."
Naruto directed her attention to the door as Sakura made her way inside the room.
"Mikasa," Sakura began, her voice gentle yet filled with resolve. "I came to see you."
Mikasa looked up, her once fierce eyes now softened with a mixture of remorse and curiosity. "Sakura Haruno…" she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Sakura stepped closer, her eyes meeting Mikasa's. "A month ago, you saved my life. You sacrificed your Jougan to bring me and the villagers back. I never got to thank you for that."
Mikasa looked down, her hands trembling slightly. "It was nothing," she said quietly. "I caused so much pain and destruction. It was the least I could do."
Sakura reached out, placing a hand on Mikasa's shoulder. "You've done more than enough to start making amends. And I want to offer you something."
Mikasa's eyes widened slightly, a mixture of surprise and apprehension crossing her face. "What do you mean?"
Sakura took a deep breath, glancing briefly at Naruto for support before continuing. "In a few weeks, Sasuke and I are getting married. I know it might seem strange, but I want to invite you to the wedding."
Mikasa's breath caught in her throat, tears welling up in her eyes. "Sakura, I… I don't understand. After everything I've done, why would anyone want me there?"
Sakura's expression softened, her voice filled with compassion. "Because I believe in second chances. I want to give you a glimpse of the life you never had, the one that was stolen from you by those who shaped you into what you became. You deserve to see what love and family look like after you had them ripped away from you all those years back"
Mikasa's tears began to fall freely, her emotions overwhelming her. "I don't know if I deserve that," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I've done so much wrong."
Naruto stepped forward, his presence a steadying force. "Everyone deserves a chance to heal and find redemption, Mikasa. Sakura and I both believe that. This is your opportunity to start anew."
Mikasa looked between Sakura and Naruto, her heart aching with a mix of gratitude and sorrow. "I don't know if I can ever make up for what I've done," she said, her voice trembling. "But… thank you. Thank you for giving me this chance."
Sakura smiled warmly at her. "It's not about making up for the past. It's about moving forward and finding a way to live differently. And we want to help you do that." Reaching a hand to Mikasa's cheek, she wiped away a tear.
Mikasa nodded, the weight of their words settling in her heart. "I want to be there but….." she said softly. "I might get lynched the second I leave this building."
"Not on my watch." Naruto declared, rising to his feet. "I'll escort you myself, no one will touch you."
Mikasa wiped her eye with her hand. "Thank you, Sakura. Thank you, Naruto."
As they left the cell, Mikasa felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in a long while. Gripping her necklace tightly, she knew the road ahead was going to be challenging. But with the support of those who believed in her, she was determined to find a new path, one built on the foundations of forgiveness, and driven on a path of love and redemption.
That afternoon in the Hyuuga estate, the members of team 4 met under a cherry blossom tree to spend their free time. Seated on a bench were Moegi and an old face from another village, Nezuko.
The pair chatted away while Konohamaru warmed up in front of them, doing squats and jumping jacks.
"What's taking her so long?" Moegi asked, growing impatient. She checked the time on her watch and groaned audibly. "That little princess better hurry up and get her ass beat so I can make an extra hundred bucks."
"I wouldn't be so sure about that," Nezuko chimed in. "Hanabi won't let me down, I'm sure of it."
Moegi looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "You haven't seen Hanabi recently have you? I wouldn't be so confident if I were you."
Nezuko folded her arms, resolute. "Nah, she'll win."
Konohamaru piped up before Moegi could respond, "Pah! Like I'd lose to that Kakashi fan girl!"
Nezuko tilted her head in confusion. "Fan girl?" She looked at Moegi for answers only to find her smirking at her.
"You really don't know."
Nezuko still had more questions to ask but the sight of Hanabi approaching nearby answered everything. Sporting a ponytail and adjusting her headband to cover her right eye, Nezuko immediately understood Konohamaru's insult.
"Alright, I'm here." Hanabi declared as she walked up to Konohamaru who had immediately entered a battle stance.
"You're late as usual," he frowned at Hanabi as she merely shrugged her shoulders.
"It's not a big deal." Hanabi replied, cracking her fists and getting into position.
"Remember, NO DOJUTSU!" Moegi reiterated, while Nezuko cheered on the Hyuuga.
"Kick her ass Konohamaru!" she added, now at the edge of her seat watching the two of them prepare to begin their spar.
"Hanabi of the Byakugan, it's an honour to do battle with you." Konohamaru teased his girlfriend, prompting an eye roll from her.
"Will you ever run out of those shitty jokes?"
"You're asking for it wearing your headband like that" Konohamaru laughed. "If you win I'll stop making the Kakashi references, how's that?" he smiled at her.
"Well consider yourself lucky today Sarutobi," Hanabi readied her stance. "Owing to my present condition, you now have only a 50% chance of losing."
In the background and leaning on the handrail of the patio, Naruto watched his former students duel with admiration. Team 4 had come so far under his supervision and were now skilled enough in his eyes to set out on their own.
Hinata's hand found Naruto's, as she joined him on the patio and made her way to his side, fingers intertwining naturally while they watched the scene unfold.
"They've grown so much y'know?" Hinata remarked softly, her voice carrying a hint of pride and nostalgia. "Just like we knew they would."
Naruto nodded, his gaze following the swift movements of the young ninjas. "Yeah, they've come a long way. I'm proud of each of them."
In the distance, Hanabi had already beaten Konohamaru, high-fiving Nezuko as Moegi grabbed her defeated teammate by the collar to give him a piece of her mind.
"Have you been training her?" Naruto laughed watching Hinata beaming with pride as Hanabi did a victory dance with Nezuko.
"She kept on bothering me, I couldn't say no." Hinata laughed. "It's a bit harder to keep up with her now in my condition, but I want to contribute to her growth in any way I can."
As they stood together, the conversation turned to recent events—the aftermath of Mikasa's capture, Sakura and Sasuke's upcoming wedding, and Hanabi's remarkable sacrifice.
"A Byakugan belonging to a member of the main branch doesn't lose it's sight once it's been taken from it's original wielder," Hinata said softly, her eyes now beginning to water. "Hanabi wouldn't let anyone else make that sacrifice for me, she insisted on donating her eye to me even after everything…"
Naruto wrapped a hand around her, kissing the top of her head. "It's because she loves you, she did everything out of her own heart."
"I know, but it still makes me feel indebted to her, even if I know she wouldn't want me to feel that way."
"It's still hard to believe everything that happened," Naruto murmured, his thoughts drifting to Mikasa and the choices that led them to this point. "But I think we're finally finding some peace."
Hinata leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder. "It's been a difficult journey, but we've faced it together. And now, looking ahead to the wedding, it feels like a new beginning."
Naruto smiled, his arm instinctively wrapping around Hinata's waist. "Yeah, I can't wait to see them start their new life together. They deserve all the happiness."
Hinata's mind went to her own family which was now starting to pester her for her own wedding date. She wanted to keep it from Naruto, but she ended up sharing their wishes with him and it was decided they would reach that decision when they were both ready.
"I'll be heading to Iwagakure soon, it's just for a short diplomatic trip." Naruto announced to Hinata's visible displeasure.
"Oh…." She whispered, shortly wearing a smile and meeting his gaze. "Good luck on your mission."
"Thanks, it's only for a few days but I'll keep in touch y'know."
They stood in silence for a moment, the breeze stirring the cherry blossoms above them. In that quiet moment, surrounded by the beauty of nature and the echoes of their shared past, Hinata found solace in Naruto's presence—a promise of a future filled with love, growth, and unwavering commitment.
As they watched their former students continue to train, Hinata leaned in closer to Naruto, her voice laced gratitude. "Thank you for never giving up on me, Naruto-kun."
Naruto turned to her, his gaze softening with affection. "And thank you for always believing in me, Hinata. You've given me everything I could ask for."
With a gentle smile, Hinata rested her head against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. In that embrace, they found a quiet certainty—a bond forged in trials and strengthened by the deep, enduring love they shared.
"I love you" she whispered to him, raising her head to meet his gaze.
Naruto responded by gently cupping her cheeks in his hands, kissing her tenderly. When her pulled away, he noticed Hinata nervously looking around their surroundings.
"Naruto!" she wheezed. "Remember what Father said about public affection."
Naruto waved his hand dismissively, "Oh don't worry about that!" he said with a smile. "I kinda negotiated something for us."
Hinata gasped in surprise. "You did? How?"
"Well let's just say that saving the village gives you brownie points to squeeze favours from your old man with."
Hinata giggled, wrapping her arms around his neck as he grabbed her waist, pulling her closer. "You're full of surprises y'know?"
"Better start hoping for another world ending threat soon" Naruto laughed, allowing a hand to wander lower and lower. "Maybe I can get even better deals for us with that."
Hinata squirmed as she felt his hand grab at her, drawing a mischievous grin from Naruto. Rolling her eyes, she reached up to kiss him, pulling him closer to her. In their embrace, they found a quiet certainty—a bond forged in trials and strengthened by the deep, enduring love they shared.
Together, they looked towards the future, ready to face it hand in hand, with hearts united and a love that would guide them through every challenge yet to come.
