Valerie sighed as she woke up, the morning sun already high in the sky. She stretched, feeling the weight of yesterday's emotions still lingering in her chest. Last night had been a whirlwind of grief, unexpected connections, and a glimpse of hope. She knew today would bring its own challenges, but for now, she was determined to find some peace.
It was late enough that she could hear the faint sounds of her family bustling about downstairs. Quickly, she slipped out of bed and moved to her closet. She pulled out a sleeveless shirt that she usually wore when training with her brother Darryl and put it on. She found her favorite shorts and slipped them on, followed by her sturdy shoes. Moving to the window, she looked out at the garden below and smirked. Without hesitation, she grabbed the vines growing up the side of the wall and climbed down, her descent graceful and swift.
Once her feet touched the ground, she took a deep breath, savoring the crisp morning air. She walked through the garden, her sanctuary, heading towards the roses. Their dewy petals sparkled in the sunlight, and she couldn't help but smile. Sitting on a familiar bench, she pulled out her hidden sketch pad and opened it to a new page. With careful strokes, she began to capture the delicate beauty of the roses.
As she sketched, a glint caught her eye. Valerie set her sketch pad down and moved closer to the roses. Reaching out, she gasped as she pulled out a glowing cube from within the blooms.
"Innocence..." she whispered, eyes widening as the cube began to glow brighter. She closed her eyes, feeling a surge of energy. When she opened them again, the cube had transformed into a small, intricate tube. Valerie stared at it, puzzled, but her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of footsteps behind her. Quickly, she hid the tube in her shorts and turned around, frowning as Lavi came into view.
"Morning. You're up late," Lavi greeted, stopping in front of her.
"Morning. I wanted to enjoy the garden," she replied, trying to keep her voice steady. Lavi noticed her sketch pad and picked it up before she could stop him. He flipped through the pages, nodding appreciatively.
"You're really good. If you were an exorcist, I'd say you should meet General Tiedoll. He draws and paints all the time." Valerie blushed and looked away.
"Just give it back..." Lavi smiled and handed it back to her.
"My family doesn't even know about it... The only person who knew was my best friend, and she's gone now..." She blinked when she felt Lavi's arms wrap around her in a comforting hug. She looked up at him, surprised.
"It's okay. I can keep it a secret for you, if you trust me enough," Lavi said softly. Valerie blushed and nodded. Lavi smiled and pulled away gently.
"Now, how about we go inside? I think breakfast is ready." Valerie hid her sketch pad and nodded.
"Let's."
Breakfast was served a few minutes later, and the dining room was filled with the chatter of her younger siblings. Valerie smiled at their animated faces, then tuned out the conversation as her older siblings discussed their plans for the day.
"So, what will you boys be doing today, if you don't mind me asking?" Valerie's mother asked. Allen, Kanda, and Lavi looked at her. Allen, ever the gentleman, answered for the group.
"Well, we were going to go into town for a while and look around."
"That sounds lovely."
"Mother, do you mind if I go with them? I would like to go into town as well," Valerie asked. Her mother looked over at her father, and they shared a quiet conversation before her mother turned back to her.
"Sure, sweetie. As long as you stay safe."
"Thank you, Mother." Valerie's mother smiled at her and returned to her conversation. Valerie went back to her meal but looked up when she felt someone's gaze on her. She blushed when she saw it was Lavi. Darryl smirked and leaned over to whisper in her ear.
"You like him. Admit it. Ouch!" He rubbed his leg where Valerie had kicked him under the table.
"Shut up," she hissed. Their father looked over at them.
"Is everything alright over there?" he asked.
"Yes, Father. Everything is fine," Valerie answered quickly. He nodded and went back to reading the paper.
Valerie glared at her brother and resumed eating. Darryl pouted but returned to his meal. Lavi chuckled, and Valerie blushed even more. Was it so hard to get through breakfast without blushing? Apparently, yes.
Later, Valerie walked along the road with Allen, Kanda, and Lavi. Allen and Kanda were ahead of them, arguing as usual.
"Do they always do that?" Valerie asked.
"Yup," Lavi replied.
"Wow. Does it ever get old?"
"Every once in a while." Valerie shook her head as they continued walking.
"So, why did you want to come into town with us?" Lavi asked after a moment.
"I wanted to visit her grave." Lavi looked away briefly.
"It's okay. I'm not sad anymore. I just miss her. She was the only one who really understood how I felt after my oldest brother died. Darryl understands me to a certain extent, but not like she did."
"Oh..." Valerie gave him a small smile.
"Valerie?" She turned at the sound of a familiar female voice and saw her best friend's mother. Smiling, she walked over to her, but Allen's eye activated, and he turned around sharply.
"Valerie! Get away from her!" Allen shouted. Valerie turned, confused, and saw an akuma in place of her friend's mother. She screamed, stumbling back and falling to the ground.
"Give me the Innocence," the akuma demanded, launching at Valerie. She screamed again, holding her hands out in front of her, eyes squeezed shut. A bright light erupted from her hands, followed by a scream that wasn't her own. Slowly opening her eyes, she gasped. She was holding a scythe, and the akuma was gone.
Valerie stared at the scythe in shock, its blade gleaming in the morning light. Lavi, Allen, and Kanda rushed over to her, their expressions a mix of surprise and concern.
"Valerie, are you okay?" Allen asked, helping her to her feet.
Valerie nodded, still holding the scythe. "I...I think so. What just happened?"
Lavi studied the scythe with interest. "Looks like your Innocence awakened. That scythe... It's your weapon now."
Valerie's mind raced, trying to process what had just happened. She had always known about the Black Order and the battles they fought, but she never imagined she would become a part of it. The scythe felt heavy in her hands, a tangible reminder of the responsibility she now carried.
Kanda, his usual stoic self, gave her a curt nod.
Valerie took a deep breath, feeling the weight of her new reality settle on her shoulders. She looked at them, their faces a mix of encouragement and understanding. She wasn't alone in this. They would face the challenges together.
"Thank you," she said quietly, her grip on the scythe tightening. "I won't let you down."
As they walked back to the house, Valerie's mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. The morning had taken an unexpected turn, but she felt a sense of resolve. She had always been a fighter, and now she had a new purpose.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Valerie's family was surprised but supportive when she told them about her newly awakened Innocence. Her parents, who had always supported the Black Order, expressed their pride and concern. Her siblings, especially Darryl, were eager to see her new abilities in action.
That evening, as the sun set, Valerie found herself back in the garden. The events of the day had left her exhausted, but she felt a renewed sense of determination. She sat on the bench, the scythe resting beside her, and took a deep breath.
Lavi joined her, sitting down with a grin. "Quite a day, huh?"
Valerie nodded, her gaze fixed on the scythe. "Yeah. I still can't believe it."
Lavi leaned back, looking up at the sky. "You're going to be a great exorcist, Valerie. I can tell."
She smiled, feeling a warmth in her chest at his words. "Thanks, Lavi. That means a lot."
They sat in comfortable silence, the stars beginning to twinkle above them. Valerie felt a sense of peace, knowing she was on the right path. The road ahead would be difficult, but she was ready to face it.
With her family, her sense of duty, and her newfound strength, Valerie felt a surge of confidence. She was no longer just a girl mourning her losses; she was an exorcist, determined to protect those she loved and fight for a better future.
As the night deepened, Valerie's resolve solidified. She glanced at Lavi, his presence a reassuring reminder that she was not alone, even though they had only just met.
"Let's get some rest," she said, standing up and gripping the scythe with newfound determination. "Tomorrow is a new day, and we have a lot of work to do."
Lavi nodded, rising to stand beside her. "Yeah. We've got this."
Together, they walked back to the house, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Valerie felt a sense of hope, knowing that, with her determination and her Innocence in hand, she was ready to make a difference.
