Fancy Lads Cravings
Sarah had been infiltrating the Institute for a few days now. She has seen some pretty strange things. They created synth gorillas, saw how Synths are created, the most disturbing one by far, is the fact that they are the ones responsible for the Super Mutants roaming the Commonwealth. If they are willing to kidnap a baby, kill her husband, replace people with Synths, and release Super Mutants to the surface, who knows what else they are capable of. The part where she Synths being created, she has no idea what happened to the people that were kidnapped. If finding out about the FEV experiments were anything to come by, she had to guess that was probably what happened. Finding out that they raised Shaun to be their leader, that was the nail in the coffin. It took all of her self-control not to just lash out. She has to find out more information, to try to find weaknesses with the Institute or anything that would help her shut them down for good.
Now she is staring at the terminal in front of her with a dumbfounded expression written on her face. This had to be the most bizarre by far. The sound of the door opening pulled her out of her thoughts. She turns her head and sees Shaun, or as the Institute would call him, Father walks in with a tray of food. She paid attention to one particular item on the tray. A Fancy Lads Snack Cake.
"Hello mother." Father greeted. "Doctor Holdren told me where you were. I brought you some dinner."
Father notices the dumbfounded expression on Sarah's face. "What's wrong?"
"I think you need to see this." Sarah shows him the terminal.
On the screen, there was an entry written by a scientist expressing how thankful they were that synths can't gain weight, as their inexplicable love for Fancy Lad Snack Cakes is too great.
"Well, Fancy Lads Snack Cakes are my favorite food, what does this have to do with any of it?" Father asked, confused.
The fact that Fancy Lads Snack Cakes are his favorite food just further confirms the theory that formed in Sarah's head.
"You did say that the Institute used your DNA to create the Gen Three Synths?"
"Yes." Father answered, still confused.
"Well since you and the Gen Threes like Fancy Lads Snack Cakes…" Sarah awkwardly scratched the back of her head. "Well, about that…"
Sanctuary Hills, two-hundred and ten years earlier.
"Codsworth, what do you mean she wants more Fancy Lads Snack Cakes?" an exasperated Nate asked. "She already went through at least five boxes! I already went to the store three days ago!"
"Sir, she has been insisting on more Fancy Lads Snack Cakes even though I told her that you recently went to the grocery store to get some."
"Nate! Codsworth! I want more Fancy Lads Snack Cakes!" Sarah shouted from the other side of the house.
Nate groaned and buried his face in his hands. As much as he loved Sarah, these pregnancy cravings are getting out of hand. He knew Sarah has a sweet tooth, the pregnancy cravings seemed to dial it up to eleven. Three weeks ago, it was gum drops. Two weeks ago, it was donuts from Slocum's Joe. Now for the past week it was Fancy Lads Snack Cakes. This craving so far proved to be the worst. As much as he didn't want to leave the house for another trip to the grocery store, he did not want to deal with Sarah being in a sour mood for a few days.
"Alright honey, I'll go get some more." Nate calls to her in a resigned tone.
"Thank you!" Sarah called from the other side of the house.
As soon as Nate picked up the car keys, he and Codsworth went to go check on Sarah. As soon as they entered the bedroom, they found her on the bed fast asleep. The five empty boxes of Fancy Lads Snack Cakes scattered across the room. Nate sighed and was about to pick them up when Codsworth stopped him.
"Don't worry sir, I'll handle it." Codsworth starts putting the empty boxes inside the trash can.
Good thing she insisted on getting Codsworth. Nate thought to himself as he left the room.
Present day
"Well that explains a lot," Father said after hearing the story.
Sarah buried her face in her hands in embarrassment at the memory. She felt so bad for Nate and Codsworth. After Shaun was born, she treated Nate to a series of date nights, and she helped out Codsworth with some chores. It was the least she could do considering what she put them through.
"Nate, Codsworth, I'm sorry guys."
Author's Note: There is a terminal entry in the institute that mentions that Gen Three Synths love Fancy Lads Snack Cakes, so I thought maybe something short and sweet (no pun intended) like this might explain it.
