It was dark all around like I had been locked in a box. I wondered if I was dead, if this is what death was just eternal darkness surrounding you slowly eating away your mind.
No.
No that can't be Percy killed the diaper bull, and we reached the farmhouse.
" Honey." I heard a voice calling out from behind me. It sounded sweet, almost too sweet. I turned around trying to find the source of the voice.
" There you are. I've been looking for you." the voice still sounded sweet, concerned almost but it made me want to run for the hills, but the problem was there were no hills, it was just darkness all around.
"I'm sorry I think you have me confused with someone," I said trying to sound confident but my voice was trembling. Great timing.
"Oh, honey. It's all right." The voice said and this time I saw the golden cat-like eyes staring down at me from almost 20 feet up. I was terrified but unable to move, unable to break eye contact. I was transfixed.
Then, it laughed, a thundering laugh that echoed through my surroundings.
"Hey. Wake up." I felt my shoulders shaking. I woke up with a startle, breathing heavily, but no air was reaching my lungs. I was gasping. It felt like I had an elephant standing on my chest. My skin felt wet and clammy.
The guy sat down next to me, patting my back soothingly. "It's okay. You're safe now just focus on your breathing. Inhale and Exhale….." He continued to guide me to take deep breaths and then stood up as I started to relax.
" Hey. " he bent down to come at my eye level as he was much taller than me and smiled. He must have been around 15 with skin that looked sunburned and blonde hair, cleanly parted at one side. He had an athletic build and was wearing an orange colored t-shirt with Camp Half-Blood written on it with dark blue colored jeans and black colored sports shoes.
" I'm Lee Fletcher." He smiled as I registered his face he had deep blue eyes, somehow looking into them made me feel calm. " How are you feeling? You were shaking in your sleep."
I nodded, trying to find my voice. "I'm Zariya and I feel good." Which was true. I hadn't felt better than this before.
I registered my surroundings, "Is this the farmhouse?" I asked.
" No. This is Camp Half-Blood and you're in the infirmary and I'm the main healer here." He went to the table and started pouring something into the glass. " I was told You were passed out in front of the farmhouse, guess it's a good sign that you remember that."
I closed my eyes and the events of the day passed through me, Percy and I carried Grover to the farmhouse. Wait. Percy. " What happened to Percy, is he alright?" I asked, urgently.
Lee walked back with a glass with a straw. " Is that your brother's name? He's fine, just knocked out in the next room."
I shook my head, " He's not my brother. I just met him on the way."
He nodded, " Sorry, I just thought you guys looked alike." He felt like a healer. His voice was calm and firm. He talked like he was explaining something to you all the time.
I nodded, he was right. We did look very much alike. That was the first thing I noticed too.
" Maybe you two have the same parent." I looked at Lee confused, he seemed serious.
"Percy has a mom." I paused before going any further. Did he still have a mom? She had disappeared in the hands of the bullman. I could have protected her. I should have, I felt the tears threatening to fall out. She can't be dead right.
I looked up to see Lee staring at me," No, I was talking about your godly parent."
"God?"
What even was he talking about? This couldn't have been a mental institute right?
" You don't know." He sighed. "That's fine. Here." He handed over the glass with the straw to me. It had a glowing yellow liquid in it, " Drink this. You'll feel better. Don't drink too fast though."
I nodded and took it from him, starting to sip on it. It tasted sweet and Fruity but I couldn't point out the taste of it. But it did make me feel like the surge of energy flowing through me. I started to sip it faster and Lee warned me to slow down, which I did but I still finished the whole glass in record time.
" I'll tell Chiron that you're awake and then he can explain everything to you. For now, just take some rest. And you can change into those clothes if you want." Lee said, pointing at the set of clothes on the table next to my bed.
He walked out of the room.
I changed my torn clothes to a pair of jeans shorts and an orange-colored Camp Half-Blood t-shirt, the same one Lee was wearing. I kept thinking about What this place was what Lee meant by god as a parent, where I even came from and what was I.
The thoughts running in my head were making me feel like I might pass out again so I decided to go look for Percy.
I walked out of the room and peered inside the next room. Percy was lying on the bed, passed out as Lee had told me. I was about to walk into the room when a voice stopped me, "You should let him rest for now."
I saw a man with thinning brown hair and, a shaggy beard. He was tall, taller than any man I had seen, and then I saw why. He was a horse from the waist below.
What's with these people and having animals in their pants?
I sort of just let go of my first and very obvious question cause I didn't wanna get kicked in the face by a horse and just asked, " Who are you?"
He smiled at me, his smile was warm, "I'm Chiron. The activities director of this camp. "
"I am Zariya." I stared at him, " Why am I here? "
" You're here because you belong here. " He replied, a twinkle in his eyes like he wanted to see how I would react to his words.
"That's a great way of answering a question without actually answering anything." I humped. Chiron laughed, a hearty laugh, not the kind of laugh I had heard in my dreams. It made me smile a little too.
"How about we start with you? What do you know?"
I looked down. I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell him or if I trusted this place enough but I felt like I trusted Percy after all he did save me on the hill against the bull-man and he brought me here, he didn't leave me up there to die. I also trusted his mom, she wanted me to come here, and she told me I would get answers here. I guess I owed her that honesty.
"I know my name, everything else is kind of a blur." I started, "About 3 weeks ago I woke up in an abandoned factory, I get these glimpses of my past at times but it's still a blur." I paused and looked at Chiron, he was listening to me intently and I continued further, "Then there was a monster, an old lady with bat-like wings and she kept following me, telling me to return what was stolen.…. I think I killed her, I don't know she kinda just burst out in yellow dust in the forest near here somewhere, and then I met Percy and his mom, she told me to come here. She said I'll get answers here."
Chiron nodded, he looked like he was deep in thought, like something that I had said had made him very uneasy, "And how exactly did you kill the monster?"
"With this." I rotated my necklace and my double sword appeared in my hand.
Chiron looked wide-eyed.
C'mon a magic sword can't be that surprising to a guy who is half man and half horse.
He sighed, " I think you should meet the camp director. "
I followed Chiron across the long stretch of land on which this camp was located. There were many children with the same t-shirt as me doing archery, some just joking around and some practicing with swords.
"What is this place?" I asked Chiron.
" This is Camp Half-Blood. The place for the children of the Gods of Olympus." Chiron told me.
Gods. Again with that answer, as if it was the most sensible thing ever. But I guess for them it is.
"So, they do exist," I asked.
Chiron nodded, " Yes. Sometimes they fall in love with mortals and have children. Like you."
"So who is my mom or dad?"
"I don't know, only your parent does and when the time is right they will send a sign and claim you as their child."
I frowned, "So you're telling me that my mom or dad is a god and I've been running for my life for 3 weeks and they did nothing? And even now they don't care enough to tell me hey I'm your dad or mom."
Chiron suddenly stopped in front of me and I almost clashed with him, "God's work in mysterious ways. We are not to question them. Besides I don't think you were supposed to be here."
I was angry now, " What does that even mean? Do you know me? "
Chiron let out a small breath, " I don't. That's the problem. We have satyr in every school, we had a warning for Percy but we had no idea you existed. You being here could be a very bad sign that things are heading in the wrong direction."
"Jeez, that's a very warm welcome." Chiron didn't say anything else he just walked in ahead. What did he know that he wasn't telling me? Why was I such a bad sign?
We stopped in front of the farmhouse. A small, plump man with purple curly hair and a tiger-patterned shirt was sitting on a chair playing a card game.
"Chiron, you're back let's finish this game. "
Chiron cleared his throat, "We have someone you need to meet."
He turned to me, " This is Mr.D, the camp director. " He leaned down towards me slightly," Be respectful."
"And this is Zariya."
Mr.D glared at me, his bloodshot eyes looked at me as if he hated me already, "Welcome to the camp I suppose. Now would you sit down we have the game to finish."
Chiron gestured for me to take a seat on the chair, " What game is this." I asked Mr. D.
"Sir." He added. I refused to add that though and just stared at him as if I was clueless. Mr.D looked between me and Chiron, "Are you sure she belongs here."
" The fact that she's here suggests that she does, Mr. D."
Chiron played his cards. Mr.D waved his hand and a goblet appeared on the table and filled itself with red wine.
Now that was cool. All this talk about gods and this was the first magic I had seen. I clapped.
"I'm not your entertainment girl." Mr. D scolded.
I tried to make the most innocent face and said, "But that was real cool " Mr. D almost looked proud when "Mr. D," Chiron warned, taking Mr. D's attention away from me, "your restrictions."
Mr. D looked at the wine and feigned surprise."Dear me." He looked at the sky and yelled, "Old habits! Sorry!"
Mr. D waved his hand again, and the wineglass changed into a fresh can of Diet Coke. He sighed unhappily but still drank it.
Chiron winked at me. "Mr. D offended his father a while back, and took a fancy to a wood nymph who had been declared off-limits."
My jaw dropped. "Wait, D like Dionysus, the God of wine "
Which part of my brain had that information stored I'll never know but it did.
"Oh well, would ya look at that, you do have a basic knowledge." Mr.D then gave me a stern look, " But be warned girly The names have power, don't go around dropping them like that."
" You are a God?"
"Yes, and if you don't wanna find out about my ability to smite you off the face of this earth, you better start watching your manners."
"I'm sorry, sir." I finally added. "But you know, not on me but if you're ever doing it on someone I'll be more than happy to be in the audience. I'll cheer and clap for you." I grinned at him.
Mr. D just groaned in response and got up, "Just show her the orientation video and Cabin 11, Zaryus"
"That's not even a girl's name." I pouted.
