DANGANRONPA: OFF THE RAILS

Chapter 1 – Freedom's End

Part 5

...

The information of the party had dropped a few minutes ago as people started to filter out to return to the dorm cart. Discussions and small talk could be heard as the party remained at the forefront of conversations. Shunso was pondering about the party as well as he felt an arm suddenly drape over his shoulder shoulder. Turning his head, the intelligence officer found Satoru standing there as Shunso raised a brow. "…Can I help you Satoru?"

Satoru chuckled lightly and ruffled Shunso's hair a bit, causing a small frown on the intelligence officer's face. "Come on now darling! Don't be like that. I just wanted to talk to my friend." Recieving a deadpan expression and a raised brow, Satoru would sigh and shake his head. "Alright… so there is a reason I came to you. You see, I was hoping to ask you and Chizure if you could assist Kanade and I with the party set up. We said we would do it ourselves since it was our idea."

This caused Shunso to look confused. "Wait... your idea?"

To which the idol would nod in response. "Yes, our idea. You see… Kanade and I were chatting about music as she is such a lovely dear. And then, we were chatting about what we had done recently, with me bringing up the guys night party that Wally ran. And being the little darling she is, Kanade brainstormed the idea of a party to bring up morale!" Shunso blinked but nodded to the idol's words. Kanade was a very much a kind soul as he had learned over the past few weeks. Either way, Satoru would continue. "So… she asked for my assistance as I am a natural performer and have experience with events such as this. I, of course, suggested bringing in help… Emiko would join the performances, wanting them to be perfect. Li-Wei took a bit but agreed to work as the 'bouncer' alongside Ember. Finally, Hastur said he would assist with drinks at the bar... Pop and water of course."

The intelligence officer nodded and listened as he sighed. "Alright… that makes sense. It also explains why you six were up there." The picture was getting clearer for Shunso as he turned to Satoru with a tired look. "But still… why choose to ask Chizure and I for assistance? Why not one of the other organizers?"

"Well… because we're night shift partners darling~" The idol gave a wink and a finger gun. "Plus… they all have their tasks and Emiko, despite also assisting with performances, is going to handle the night shift while she works with us. So less to put on her plate you know?"

Rubbing his eyes a bit from exhaustion, the intelligence officer sighed. "Very well… I can't speak for Chizure, but I'll assist you however I can. You'll have to ask Chizure yourself though."

"Already ahead of you~. Kanade was excitedly asking her during our last meal. But this is perfect! It'll be different setting up without a specific stage crew, a bit like my beginning years, but I should be good for a song or two. Kanade even asked if it was possible to do a song together… still unsure on that one."

This caused Shunso to stop as he looked at looked at Satoru confused. "Wait… really? Why not if I may ask?"

The idol laughed and waved his hand. "It's because I'm a solo idol darling." He stopped and turned to Shunso with a smile. "Simple as that. Unlike the idol groups that pop up, I'm used to performing on my own. Plus, it's simpler for me. Afterall, I solely have to worry about my performance alone. Less chance of others messing up and getting in my way."

Shunso blinked and looked at him. "…But still… shouldn't you at least give it a try? Kanade is pretty friendly and our friend."

"So? Friendly doesn't change anything." Satoru's smile fell as he looked a little annoyed. "When it comes to music, I take it very seriously. I've had to work myself to the bone some days. I want my work to be MY work. So no. I don't do 'duets' on a whim." He rubbed his eyes a bit as he sighed. "…Look… just… I prefer to sing solo. Let's leave at that and move on from this conversation."

The intelligence officer didn't say another word as they finally reached the dorm cart. The idol would turn and give a finger gun. "See you tomorrow darling!"

After that, he would walk into his dorm, waving goodbye to Shunso who would soon enter his own room. Exhaustion was catching up on him and he knew he needed to sleep. As his head hit the pillow and his eyes closed, thoughts of the party entered his mind along with and thinking about how he could assist the party set-up.

...

[Time remaining: 05:15:28:39]

...

Getting as much sleep as he could before the big day, Shunso would pull himself out of bed and shimmy himself over to his wheelchair. However, felt his body weighing down on himself as his stomach growled out in pain. The intelligence officer could tell the effects of the motive were going to make this a challenge, but he did not back away from an agreement. Exiting his room, it would not take long for Shunso to notice the others. Some tried to hide it while others expressed it visibly… but a small growl sound could be heard lightly as he passed by. Just goes to show you never know how important something is in your life until it's gone.

Upon reaching the pub, the intelligence officer reached for the door to open it when- "Stop right there." …He was stopped by Li-Wei who was standing there with a serious look on is face. The park ranger then motioned to the intelligence officer's backpack as Shunso nodded and handed it to him. It would take a moment for Li-Wei to scan through it before handing it back. However, as Shunso tried to pass, Li-Wei coughed and pointed at the intelligence officer's jacket. This caused Shunso to groan as he took off his jacket. This continued on as Li-Wei then proceeded to check the Shunso's shoes, socks, and pants.

It was finally when Li-Wei motioned to the wheelchair that Shunso looked at him in absolute disbelief. "...Seriously? My wheelchair too?"

Li-Wei just nodded and offered a stool as Shunso shimmied over to it in annoyance. All the while, the park ranger would glance and look around chair as he spoke. "Yes seriously. I know it sounds ridiculous but I want to make sure absolutely no one has any twisted thoughts. The last thing we want is someone to bring a weapon to the party."

Upon hearing that, the intelligence officer would blink as the park ranger motioned to move back over to the wheelchair. Shimmying over and plopping down into his seat, Shunso would stop and look at Li-Wei with an understanding expression. "…So you're preparing for the worst and trying to stop it before it occurs."

"Of course. Despite everyone putting their trust in me as leader... I cannot hold complete trust in everyone. For the safety of the group." He held a serious expression on his face as he returned to guarding the doorway. "We all have a breaking point, and I wish to prevent someone from reaching that point. We do not want to break the fragile peace we currently have."

This caused Shunso to blink in confusion for a moment before looking curiously. "So… you're not trusting our group of Ultimates... to keep trust within said group of Ultimates?"

Li-Wei nodded and continued to answer Shunso's curiosity. "That is correct. While not the kindest view on how things are taking place, it is the logical choice."

"…Similarly to your suggestion of night shifts, right?" Li-Wei paused and turned to Shunso as the intelligence officer continued his train of thought. "You seem to be the kind of person who prefers to have a level head and think things logically. To have ways to prevent an incident from happening in the first place rather than react to it happening. With the night shift, it became that there is always four people around and about. To prevent the thought of murder while also making sure people don't roam."

A small smile graced the park ranger's face as he nodded. "I see you picked up on that. Correct… it was the most logical solution at the time. Introductions were all but new. No connections were made. So I created that system to unite the group for peace of mind." A grim expression then appeared. "Though I doubt it will last forever. For the moment someone decides to go over the line..."

He understood completely what the park ranger was stating as the intelligence officer found himself nodding along. If a murder were to occur, no matter the case, would be disasterous and leaves a lingering question about the idea of future night shifts.

The park ranger would then shake his head as he sighed."…But that is not important at the moment. Instead of negative thoughts, what is important is making sure that everything is set up properly for the party tonight. Hastur and Chizure are taking care of the lights while Kanade and Satoru are preparing the sound system and music. That leaves you assisting Emiko with the décor and presentation."

Shunso would raise a brow but would give a nod as he finally entered the room, leaving the park ranger to continue his job as a guard.

After a few minutes of moving chairs... and struggling a bit with it... Shunso found himself moving around the back of the bar, stocking inventory. He counted the total amount and quickly calculated his totals into his notebook. "So a total of sixty four bottles of pop. That leaves a total of four bottles per each individual. ...All seems good on this end."

Looking at the page, Shunso carefully took the page out of his notebook and placed it on the bar counter as he rolled himself towards his partner in preparing the cart for the party. "Emiko... ... Emiko?" However, the intelligence officer was confused to see the ballet dancer not respond in the slightest.

Emiko herself would turn to see the confused look on Shunso's face as a look of understanding graced her face. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled her hearing aid out and placed it back into her ear before smiling. "Apologies for that Mr. Kamata. I had my hearing aid out again. Was there something you needed to ask of me?"

The intelligence officer shook his head before pointing backwards to the bar. "Nothing urgent or anything. Just finished counting the amount of drinks we will have for the party tonight." He then stopped and looked at her with a curious expression. "Say... if you don't mind me asking... why did you take your hearing aid out?"

The ballet dancer nodded at his question and pointed towards the idol moving speakers around and the pianist testing the sound. "While not completely on, they're still technically on. And when it is... it's better for myself and my hearing aid to remove it and turn it off."

Looking back and forth between Emiko and the speakers, a flicker of realization entered his eyes. "Hearing aid feedback?" The ballet dancer gave a nod to the intlligence officer as he hummed. "I see... I guess you also remove them during your performances for the same reasons?"

This caused the ballet dancer to shake her head in disagreement. "Not quite." She motioned to the hearing aid to show that the device was out slightly. "My hearing aids do not go all the way into my ear. Thus, I take them out for performances. That way there's no chance of them falling out and potentially being destroyed."

The intelligence officer placed a hand under his chin as he hummed in understanding. "I see... If it were anyone else, I would say that sounds like an issue. But you've shown you're fine without it in your performance." He then chuckled weakly. "Plus... it would be hypocritical to claim anything like that with you. I understand all too well the struggles of being 'handicapped'." He stated as he motioned to his legs.

The ballet dancer would nod in return. "Indeed. Not many struggle with the same issues we face. ...But you are correct. I do not let my disability hold me back. For the arts are about grace and perfection." She stated as if it were a fact.

Shunso would nod silently as the dancer removed her hearing aid once more and returned to the tables. As he moved away from her, he couldn't help but chuckle lightly. "Don't let my disability hold me back? ... …That makes one of us."

And as the hours passed by, it was soon time for the party to commence. The lights were on display while background music echoed throughout the pub. It was a situation Shunso never thought he would be a part of, but upon entering the room, he held a bit of a smile. Li-Wei and Ember manned the doors while Ember also chatted with Kana... a shock to see she had left the room.

At the bar manned by Hastur, Kuniyoshi and Yokona seemed to be going back and forth. If the frustrated look on the strategist's face meant anything, then Shunso could easily guess that the poker player was poking fun at the strategist. Next to them was a nervous Takeshi looking at the bickering poker player and strategist while Ai laughed merrily at the group. And off to the side by his longsome seemed to be Katashi.

Turning his attention to the stage, Shunso could see Satoru and Kanade chatting before the pianist moved over towards the ballet dancer, who appeared to be practicing. Shaking his head, Shunso then turned his head to see Wally, Koharu and Chizure sitting at a nearby table as the sidekick waved the intelligence officer over.

Shunso would chuckle lightly and roll over towards the table and join the three as the lights turned towards the stage as Satoru stepped out, dressed stylishly with a smile. "Hello darlings~! I hope you're all enjoying yourselves!" The idol bowed lightly as he pointed towards the others. "Before we begin, a thank you to all of us who helped set this party together. Now..." He moved over to the microphone with a confident expression and grin. "Let's get this party started... shall we?"

And then... without any hesitation... Satoru began to sing.

[Masara – Love10 (ft. Juunana & Ran) {Imagine it in male vocals}]

Needless to say, the crowd was blown away and it was easy to see his talent was no joke. The Ultimate Idol was well deserving of his title as his singing started to raise the mood of the party, bringing smiles onto the faces of everyone. Not only that, some like Ai, Kanade, and even Hastur behind the bar began to move to the beat. A chain reaction that brought along tapping feet, head bobs, and becoming one with the music presented.

Idle chit chat started among the party as drinks were being handed out one another another. After a multitude of stressful days and nights, with the motive dangling over their heads like a ticking time bomb... to see smiles on the others brought a smile to the intelligence officer. Even in the group he was sitting at was able to fall into simple discussion and chatter. Truly, for the first time in some time, the riders were feeling hope.

However, at some point during the idol's performance, the table's conversation changed as Wally turned to Shunso with a curious expression. "Say… Shunso… why did you become an intelligence officer?"

The simple question caused Shunso to stop and look at Wally before sighing for a moment. "…You really wanna know?" A nod from the sidekick made the intelligence offcicer look around. They seemed to be staring in anticipation as Shunso sighed and placed down his drink. "Very well..."

"To start, I need to specify that I wasn't always wheelchair bound. In fact, I was the complete opposite." This raised some eyebrows as he continued. "…I was an energtic child. I loved running around, exploring, and was a wild child through and through. However... not all was sunshine and rainbows."

He sighed as he looked down at his drink. "My mother and I were never well off. Always scraping by from my mother's low salary. So despite all my energy... I started to focus on my studies. I wished to enter the local expensive school with it's scholarship program... to have a strong chance at giving my mother a better life. And it worked." He chuckled lightly. "Out of everyone that applied for the scholarship, I had the best grades and consistency. I was a shoe-in and got in."

However, the intelligence officer's smile then turned into a frown. "What I didn't know was how elitist that school would be. Every day was the same thing... I was the outcast of the school for being from the poor part of town. I had to walk an hour just to catch the bus which was never let go. Every day I was reminded of my living situation by them as mockery and taunts." Shunso sighed as he held his head. "I ignored it. I had a goal and I needed to achieve it so I ignored it. That was... until that horrible school trip."

He would grip his arm as flashbacks entered his mind. "...It was a class camping trip. One where I, the energetic kid, was excited to be on as it took a lot for my mom to prepare me the gear I needed. I was still on the trip with the ones who didn't like me but I thought it was fine. ...I never knew how much they despised me though. Apparently I was a slander against their family name for out performing them with grades and not falling to their jeers. I was this ugly spot on their school they wanted gone..." Shunso stopped for a moment... before turning to Chizure with a sad smile. "...And that was where 'my winning point' from our game came from."

The forger's gasped as her eyes widened in shock and horror. All the while, the pianist and sidekick looked confused as the intelligence officer continued. "A group of them, the worst of the bunch, snuck into my tent one night and grabbed me. I screamed for them to let me go as the teacher heard me. But they had others blocking the teacher as the students laughed and laughed at me... before they reached a large cliff." The gears began to turn as Kanade and Wally began to pale. "With a laugh at their joke and a teacher running to stop them, they tossed me off the cliff, expecting me to fall into the water. ... ... ...But all of them stopped laughing when they heard a loud crack and me screaming in pain."

Shunso gained a far off look as he frowned. "I had to be emergency evacuated... but by the time I reached the hospital it was too late. I was given news that I would never walk again. My spine had all but snapped and couldn't be repaired completely. ...I still don't know what hurt the most. My body in pain, the horrible news, or my mothers tears." He chuckled weakly. "And you know what's worse? The kids never got expelled." This caused eyes to widen in disbelief as Shunso nodded. "The school couldn't take a hit like this... it would ruin their reputation. And the parents wanted their prestige. So the school and parents went ahead and offered a deal... a large sum of money if we leave the school and keep our mouths shut."

He shook his head as he laughed weakly. "What could we do? We were poor and if we refused... the school would likely shut down anyways and we'd be stuck with expensive medical bills for recovery and treatment. ...So we took it." He then held his hands as sighed. "What followed was a period of my life where I was lost. I despised school but was still a smart child. I just simply lost the passion I had entirely. My mom, worried about me, had us visit a friend of hers... the police chief and the man who would soon become my surperior. The adults were chatting and trying to solve it all when I rolled myself over to ask questions about this case left on his desk. He went to go say it was off limits and important confusing work... but was shocked when I said that it was easy and gave him the answer. ...That turned out to be a missing person case."

Shunso gained a small pained smile. "It's been years since then and sadly... I can't say I'm completely happy with how life turned out. Do I like where I am? Yes. ...But how I got there? I can never say I enjoyed. There isn't a day where I don't wish that I could walk once more. I took things for granted, ignored something that should haven't have been ignored, and payed the price." The intelligence officer would take a drink from his pop as he sighed. "But... that's in the past now. We're here to party and relax. Not bring the mood down with my shitty past."

Chizure, Kanade, and Wally nodded as the sidekick patted the intelligence officer on the back. "I'm... sorry you had to go through all that. But if anything... I'm happy to have met you Shunso. I hope things go well for you and your mother... and if you need any help... I'm here to assist. After all, a hero has to protect all!"

Shunso would stare at the sidekick for a moment before he smiled and nodded. This brought a smile to the forger and pianist's faces as well as Satoru's singing started to fade out. The pub began to clap in applause as the idol bowed and moved behind the stage. As he does, Kanade would push her seat back and stand up with a smile. "Well, We're up next! Wish us luck!"

And with that, the pianist headed off backstage as the three looked confused for a moment. We? However, their confusion was solved as Kanade stepped out to the grand piano along side Emiko. The pianist and ballet dancer got into position as the pub grew silent. And then... Kanade's fingertips moved through the keys in vigor and passion as the music began to echo out.

[The Promise – Michael Nyman]

[Needs to be updated]

The melody began as the lights moved down towards the ballet dancer. With elegance and grace, she began to dance to the melody. Time seemed to have stopped for the train as everyone's eyes were on the stage. If Satoru's song brought the energy up for the party, this song calmed down that energy into a lull of peace. The melody Kanade played held a calming yet hopeful effect that appeared to blend with Emiko's fluid yet almost somber movements. A combination of talents… the Ultimate Pianist and the Ultimate Ballet Dancer…

No one was talking as the party stared at the performance in an almost mesmerized state. And almost as quick as it started, time seemed to flow as the two finished their piece. The pub was filled with silence and awe... before the applause and cheers echoed ounce more. However, there wasn't as much energy as earlier on due to the exhaustion finally catching up to the riders.

Kanade smiled and moved up to the microphone as she bowed. "Thank you all for coming out to our party! We hope you have a wonderful rest and a special thank you to our kind night shift staying up! Have a good night everyone!"

And with that final message, most of the riders began to leave the pub. Along the way, Shunso could see the night shift talking to Emiko who seemed to be ushering them off as well as the ballet dancer stayed behind for clean up. Seems they tried to offer help but the ballet dancer refused.

Shunso himself was starting to feel the exhaustion as he slowly rolled out of the pub. With a stretch of his arms, the intelligence officer looked down at his notebook as the sniper and combat medic passed by him. However, as the sidekick began to walk by, Wally would feel himself being stopped as he turned to see that Shunso had grabbed Wally's wrist. The intelligence officer had an unreadable expression as he spoke up.

"…Hey… I know you've talked about this before... but you're sure you have the conviction to protect everyone right?" This caused the sidekick to stop and listen to the intelligence officer's words as Shunso sighed and continued. "Look. Life... has a way of dragging people down. You keep saying you're going to be a hero… and… I want to know if you're seriously gonna stick with that conviction."

Wally would blink for a moment before giving a grin. The sidekick stood there confidently and gave the intelligence officer a thumbs up as he spoke. "Of course I won't back down! I'm the Ultimate Hero after all!" Wally then grumbled to the side a bit. "… ... even if they gave me the title of sidekick… whatever..." Shaking his head, Wally looked back at Shunso, dead in the eye, with an determined expression. "I won't back down until everyone is safe! You can count on me!"

The intelligence officer would stare at the sidekick for a moment as silence echoed. And after a while, Shunso would chuckle, cutting through the silence, before shaking his head. "Alright. Alright... I can see you're committed." He then stopped as he spoke in a quiet yet honest tone. "Just… promise me Wally... ... ...be the hero they need."

The sidekick would blink in slight shock for a moment before grinning and holding a fist out for a fist bump. "Of course! Dire-Claw is on the prowl!"

The intelligence officer would smile and face the sidekick as he returned the fist bump. Wally would then head off towards the waiting Takeshi and Koharu with a wave and a grin that Shunso returned... until the sidekick was out of view.

Once Wally had disappeared from view, the smile on Shunso's face disappeared. The intelligence officer sat there with a serious expression as he turned back to look at the pub door.

"… … I hope you can keep that promise."

As time seemed to tick away during the night, the trio of sidekick, combat medic, and sniper found themselves heading towards the final train car. As they walked through the Yacht cart, Wally turned to Koharu with a raised brow. "So... run it by us again... what happened?"

Koharu sighed as she scratched the back of her head. "I told you. I was doing my rounds near the final cart when I heard a loud crash. And when I looked in the cart... there was nothing. So I came to get you guys."

Takeshi nodded as he scratched his chin and pulled out his Kuma-Watch. "W-Well... it does s-seem strange since it a-appears to be o-six hundred h-hours." The sniper nodded at that while the sidekick had a confused look. Takeshi sheepishly scratched his cheek. "...S-Six AM. It's 6AM."

Wally gained a look of realization as the trio entered. Upon entering the room, Wally would turn his head before he chuckled and pointed towards a mess of a stain and shards of glass. "Seems the crash was that someone left behind some pop bottles?"

Koharu groaned as she rubbed her eyes. "...Stress and worry over fucking spilled soft drink? Fuck my life..." However, she then looked unsure and crossed her arms. "But that still leaves the question... why is it here?"

Takeshi blinked. "D-Did you not b-bring the drink and accidentally s-spill it?"

Koharu scoffed and shook her head. "Fuck no. I was minding my own damn business when I heard the crash from the yacht cart. Meaning that it fucking got there somehow..." The sniper just groaned and shook her head. "Whatever... let's just get going. I swear... fucking soft drink... never going to live this down." She said this as she started to march off with a lightly chuckling Takeshi following.

However, as Wally moved to follow the two, something caught his attention in the corner of his eye. He turned to it and blinked... and blinked again... before he began to pale in fear. The other two turned back to him and were confused as Wally just pointed towards the wall. The combat medic and sniper followed the sidekick's line of sight to see...

Silence. Silence and dread was what overtook the trio as they stared at the timer with pale faces. It was Takeshi who first spoke up as he held a terrified tone in his voice. "…I… I-Isn't the timer only s-supposed to stop…"

The combat medic struggled to continue his sentence as as the sniper nodded grimly. "…when a murder occurs." Koharu's words left the three in a feeling of shock and disbelief when-

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

...A loud cry echoed through the carts. The trio stopped in their tracks as they turned their heads towards the hallway doors. The loud scream of terror left the three shocked and confused... but the three members of night watch also seemed to recognized that voice. And if they remembered correctly… ... ...

"…EMIKO!" The realization hit them like a semi-truck as they linked the cry to their fourth member. A member who currently should be on their own in the pub. So like a bat out of hell, the trio rushed off towards the pub as fast as they could. They reached the cart in record time, slightly winded and nervous as Koharu moved to open the door...

-click-

...That sound caused Koharu to curse out loud and punched the door in frustration as she tried to fiddle with the doorknob. "SON OF A BITCH! The door's locked!"

Takeshi looked shocked at the sniper. "W-What!? But t-the pub shouldn't have a lock!"

Looking at the door and listening to the other two, Wally gained a grim look of determination as he turned and looked at Koharu. "Koharu! You run and get the others! Takeshi and I will try and bust down the door!" The sniper turned to the sidekick for a moment... before she started cursing again and rushing off towards the dorms. Turning to the combat medic, the sidekick would prepare himself as he spoke out loud. "On my count of three, we ram it with everything we got! One… two… three!"

-BANG!-

"Again! One… two… three!"

-BANG! THUNK!-

"Again! One… two… THREE!"

-BANG! THUNK! …CREAK!-

The force of the combat medic and sidekick slammed the door opened as the two fell to the ground in with a painful smack. Pushing themselves off the floor and quickly dusted themselves off, they rushed into the room towards the ballet dancer. "Emiko! Are you-"

…However the sidekick's words died instantly as the horrible sight in front of them began to burn into his and Takeshi's minds.

-DING DONG, DING DONG!-

…The world seemed to stop as they looked into the room. A busted down door behind them... but what horrified them was instead what rested right in front of them.

"A body has been discovered!"

The display was one of chaos. The pub that held a party full of enjoyment and pleasant memories… was now a battlefield. The room looked like a complete wreck compared to before...

"Everyone gather to the pub for the first investigation!"

Sitting in the corner of the room was a shaken Emiko Seta, sitting there with a look of horror. With blood covering her clothes and tears in her eyes, she covered her mouth… staring at the stage… where underneath the spotlight shining brightly… laying on their back as a bloody knife glinted underneath the lights…

"Because after a certain amount of time, which you may use however you like, the first train trial will begin!"

For dead on the stage, with blood spreading out beneath them…

"Just… promise me Wally…"

…Was none other then Shunso Kamata, the Ultimate Intelligence Officer.

"…be the hero they need."
