One month had passed since she watched Tobias run out of the ceremony room and away from Abnegation. One month since he left for Dauntless and escaped his monster of a father. One month of lonely nights with tear filled eyes and guilt lining her stomach. One month of dodging Marcus at every turn.

How was she going to make it through eleven more months?

Today was visiting day, when the initiate's family was allowed to see their child one last time. She had heard the Dauntless at school talking about it and had since made a plan to visit Tobias. She hoped it would work. It felt unreal that in just a couple of hours, she would see him again. She skipped school that day and jumped on the morning train instead. The trains worked on a loop system around the city, so it would take her to Dauntless eventually. The actual getting on the train showed to be much harder than the Dauntless made it seem, so she let herself embrace the sliver of pride that came with making it onto the train.

The chill breeze that blew through her hair whisked away any lingering sense of suffocation in Abnegation. No one could talk to her here, touch her here, scold her here. It was quiet and hers to claim.

The plan was to arrive and tell whoever checked her in that she was Tobias's adopted sister, taken in by Marcus after Toby left. A replacement of sorts, which seemed like something Marcus would do, but if they questioned her she would say she was a factionless child until Marcus selflessly took her in. She would tell them that he let her visit today, give them a fake name, and then find Toby. She hoped they wouldn't care enough to ask too many questions. Not out of selflessness, like in Abnegation, but out of pure nonchalance.

The Dauntless were known for security, though. Who knew what protocols they had in place. Beatrice definitely didn't, but those were problems for future her and ones she couldn't possibly solve before hand.

Once she noticed a good number of people clad in black clothing, Beatrice figured she was close enough to jump off the train. Her landing was...rough. She got lost a couple of times and ended up having to ask some less than pleased people for directions but eventually found where she was supposed to go. A line had formed with people in blue and others in white and black. One person was dressed in the red of Amity. Beatrice felt awkward in her oversized grey robes, but reminded herself of the real reason she was here.

Toby.

Eventually, it was her turn in line to speak with a harsh-looking Dauntless woman.

"Name?" Her voice was incredibly monotone. It was clear that she was only doing this because she had to.

"Er, Sarah Eaton."

"Who are you here to see?"

"Tobias Eaton?"

"Tobias… Oh! You mean Four. What's your relation to him?" She looked at Beatrice with mild curiosity.

"Uh, adopted sister."

"I see. Alright, go ahead. Remember, Faction before blood." Beatrice nodded to her, cursing herself for the habit. She would need to break that when she transferred. It was just embarrassing. And submissive.

The room she walked into was a huge pit filled with people dressed in black clothing. Everyone was talking, making it difficult to hear or understand anything at all. The distant sound of water echoed in the background, making it seem almost cave like. She tried looking around for Toby until she resigned to wandering around. It would be easier to distinguish her in the crowd than her trying to find him.

Why did they call him 'Four'?

Why did she have to be so short?

Most people who passed her gave her a weird look up and down, before moving on with a disgusted look. It made her stomach feel funny, in a bad way.

"Bea!" An all too familiar voice came from behind her, causing her to spin around and scan the crowd.

She saw him.

For the first time in a month, she saw him. She ran up to him, not caring who she pushed aside, and jumped into his open arms. His arms wrapped around her in a hug as tight as humanly possible. Her nose buried itself into his chest. He smelled different. Like metal, and clean soap. She loved it.

"I missed you so much." He whispered to her, causing a smile to grow on her lips.

"You have no idea." Her voice had become thick with tears. Beatrice cursed herself for getting so emotional already. She glanced around and left his arms, causing him to look pained. "Follow me, I'll show you a place to talk."

He grabbed her hand and guided her through the crowd. Beatrice noticed how they didn't need to swerve around everyone, they all moved out of his way without a word. After many a dark hallway, they reached a stone pathway that stood above a raging river of sorts.

"It's called the Chasm. It's extremely dangerous if you were to fall, so not many people come close to it. Plus it's loud, so it's a good place for us to chat." Beatrice nodded, admiring how the water powered through over the rocks. Tobias led her to a rock that was dry and hidden from the rush of water. A light mist rained on them from crashing waves across the river. "My friend Zeke showed my this place. No one comes down here, so it's sort of our hang out spot when we want to be alone."

Beatrice smiled. So he had friends, that was good.

He looked good, too. She took the time to observe him, noticing how his muscles bulged from under his tight black shirt. He obviously was eating better. He had let his hair grow out longer, and she longed to run her fingers through it and tug on it.

"You look...different." Beatrice said at last. He jumped slightly, apparently her voice had startled him. He looked at her with a soft smile on his lips.

"Yeah, it's amazing what a few good meals and normal fitting clothes can do for someone."

Beatrice smiled. "So you're fitting in well?"

Toby laughed. "You sound like a concerned parent, Bea. Yes, I'm doing great. It's you I am worried about."

She blushed and looked down. Anytime he paid her special attention butterflies filled her stomach almost as quickly as heat filled her cheeks. Toby wrapped his arm around her shoulders and she took the chance to nestle her head on his shoulder. There were muscles there that she didn't remember from before. He felt warm, and safe.

"I'm doing fine. Nothing has changed much. School is the same and Abnegation is as boring as ever."

"And Marcus? He hasn't gotten to you, has he?" Toby's eyes filled with concern when she tensed.

"No, not exactly." He let out a breath of relief. She wished that she didn't worry him so much, but she knew that he wouldn't stop worrying until she was with him in Dauntless. Just like she wouldn't stop worrying about him until she was with him. "He's tried to get me to come over to his house a lot, though. I've managed to avoid him so far, but I don't know if I can keep doing it forever."

The concern lingered in his eyes, causing her to sigh. Why didn't she just say everything was fine? He didn't need the extra stress.

"Bea, you have to keep avoiding him... I don't want you to get hurt." She reached up to touch his cheek, holding his face in her hands.

"I'll be okay, Tobias. I promise you. And I don't break my promises, especially ones this important. Alright?"

Toby took a deep breath.

"Okay."

A small smile curved up on her lips and he bent his head to kiss her gently. After a moment she pulled away and kissed his cheek.

"Now, what is this Four business all about?" She hoped the change of subject would get his mind off of the topic of Marcus. He let out a large laugh, so she figured it worked. At least, to a degree.

"When I first got to Dauntless they put us through a Fear Landscape, basically a simulation of all your fears put together in an obstacle course of sorts. Most people have ten to fifteen, but I had four. So my instructor, Amar, nicknamed me Four. I wanted to leave Tobias behind in Abnegation, and all of the memories associated with it. The nickname caught on and I just let everyone call me that."

It made sense he would want to change his name and completely escape Marcus. Four was the strong, buff guy who ate enough and had friends looking out for him. Toby was the soft, caring person she had come to love in Abnegation. Two sides of the same coin.

"Would you like for me to call you Four now?"

Tobias pondered for a moment and then shook his head. "No, it's nice to hear my name again. Just not in front of other people? Especially with the recent Erudite reports, I'd rather them not know my name."

Ah yes, the Erudite papers about Marcus abusing Toby. No one believed them, unfortunately, but it made Abnegation angry and uneasy.

Beatrice nodded, a soft smile playing at her lips. For a while, they simply just stared at each other, taking in every detail while committing each other to memory. Beatrice brushed his cheek with her thumb, before pulling his face towards hers. Her lips moved against his, soft and passionate. She ran her hands through his hair like she had wanted to do earlier and gripped it between her fingers. It was soft, so soft.

Toby ran his hands up and down her sides, sending shivers up her spine. How she had missed the sparks that ignited her core, the sweet taste of his mouth on hers.

"Bea, I love you."

"I love you too, Toby."

"Is this-is this good?"

She smiled against his lips. "More, please."

He threw his leg over her waist, pinning her against the stone. Beatrice laid against the cold rock, gasping as Tobias pressed himself against her and continued their kiss. This was what she wanted. Needed.

Heat pooled in her core as she felt Tobias against her. Part of her felt as if she should be scared, but all she could feel was trust and love and wanting.

Breathless, he pulled away from her after a few moments. Beatrice pushed herself up onto her palms, planting a lingering kiss on his retreating lips. "I liked that."

"God-Beatrice." Toby let out a deep breath, shaking his head slightly. Oh no. Did she screw it all up? "That was incredible."

"You're incredible." She wanted to laugh at her own cheesiness, and Tobias offered a quiet chuckle. He held her hand, rubbing his thumb over her palm.

"You-you were okay with that, right? I don't want to make you feel pressured or uncomfortable."

"That was perfect, Toby. I promise." He squeezed her hand.

"Okay."

"Hey-o lovebirds! Whatcha up to down there?" Beatrice jumped at the sudden voice, meanwhile, Tobias groaned and looked around for the person the voice came from.

"Zeke." He muttered. "I'm going to kill him." He looked at her apologetically, but she was chuckling at the predicament. That must have been the friend he mentioned before. "Sorry."

Beatrice shrugged, trying to hide her embarrassment. "Nothing to be sorry about."

"Hey Four!" A guy around Toby's age jumped down to where they were sitting on the rock. He glanced between Toby and her, eyes settling on Beatrice. She squirmed under his gaze. She wasn't used to people actually looking at her. "Youuu, you must be the famous Bea I've heard all about."

"Famous?"

"Oh yeah. Four over here hasn't shut up about you ever since we met." Beatrice blushed at the thought of him talking about her that much.

He really hadn't forgotten about her.

"Shut up Zeke, before I kill you." Toby interrupted him.

"You wouldn't kill me. You like me too much." Zeke retorted, a smirk plastered on his face.

"Don't get too cocky. I could always get Uriah to put some hot sauce in your coffee tomorrow morning." Toby was smiling and so was Beatrice. She loved seeing that he was making friends, and had grown out of the awkward Abnegation habits they both knew all too well. It gave her hope, to see that it was possible to leave it all behind, and still be happy. Zeke put his hands up in mock surrender.

"Fine! Fine, fine. I guess I'll leave now, I depend on that morning coffee y'know." He turned to leave before hesitating. He twisted his head to look at Beatrice. "It was nice to meet you! I'll see you in a year!"

Beatrice smiled. That's right. In a year, this would be her home.

"Sorry about that. He-"

"Tobias, it's ok. Promise. I found it funny." His cheeks were tinted red, a rare occasion that showed just how embarrassed he must feel.

"I really don't talk about you that much. I mean, I do, but not that much. Of course I talk about you but-"

Beatrice laughed. "I get what you mean. Trust me, I'm flattered."

"I just don't want to screw this up." Tobias confessed, sighing. He picked up her hands once again and squeezed them.

"You aren't screwing this up. We're both just figuring things out. Soon I'll be here and we can figure them out together." She reassured him

"Okay." He sighed and pulled her close. Toby buried his face in her hair, taking in a deep breath. "I'm so glad you're here."

"Me too. Me too." She savored the feeling of having him close to her before she gave into her curiosities and questions. "Tell me about your training. What should I focus on? Any tips for initiation? Or the fear landscape?"

Tobias chuckled. "I should've known you'd come with a list of questions. Training is almost identical to what we did in Abnegation, but with better materials and for much longer. I think you'll really enjoy it, actually. When you get here, try not to show all of your strength at once just to keep yourself from being a target. Be good enough to keep you at the top but not enough to make others suspicious. Then at the end give it your all to pull through on top."

"Okay, I can try. No promises though."

Tobias chuckled. "The fear landscape is pretty hard, but I can help you out with it. Try and calm your heartbeat inside of it, or face your fear head on. I-" He stopped abruptly.

"What?"

"Nothing. It's not important. I forget what I was going to say anyways." Beatrice rolled her eyes.

"I'm not dumb, Toby. Tell me, I'm not going to make fun of you or anything."

"I was going to say that it helped me to think of you during my fear landscape. It helped me calm down to think of you talking me through it. So maybe it would help you think of me…" He sighed. "Never mind. It sounds stupid."

"No it doesn't, it makes complete sense. You used to tell me that you did the same thing in Abnegation with...him" Beatrice placed her hand on his knee in support. "Thank you. I'm sure you're doing great. I'm really proud of you."

"Thanks, Bea."

"I should probably head home, so I get back by the time school ends."

Tobias sighed and nodded. He pushed himself to stand, before reaching out his hand for her to take.

"I have something for you."

Beatrice raised her eyebrows at him, but he didn't say anything as he dug around in his pant pockets. What had he gotten her?

Toby pulled out a black box and handed it to her. She gasped when she saw what was inside-a silver necklace. A thin, silver Dauntless flame hung on a delicate chain. The words 'Forever & Always' were engraved into the metal with a small, black stone glittering at the base. It laid on a plush pillow and shined when the light reflected on it. When she pulled it out, Beatrice found the chain to be quite long.

"Tobias this is...this is beautiful." She didn't deserve this. She hadn't done anything. And this was stunning. So, so valuable. Tobias looked at her nervously.

"Do you like it? It's a promise necklace. You mentioned that you were worried I might leave you while I'm in Dauntless, or that you would hold me back from 'better' girls. I can't offer a lot of reassurance from here, so I got you this. Normally, people give their partner a ring, but I thought a necklace would work better so you can wear it underneath your Abnegation dress. Then when you get to Dauntless, you can wear it shorter and I can get you a proper ring." Tobias blushed, realizing what he had just said. "That was so forward oh my God-I didn't mean it that way. I mean, later on, I hope. But I just meant, y'know, a proper promise ring."

Beatrice chuckled. It was cute to see him all flustered. "It's perfect, Tobias. I love it." The charm was cold and smooth. Small, but not too small. Once again he knew exactly what she would like. "This must have cost you a fortune."

He shrugged. "One advantage of being raised Abnegation is that I don't like to spend money, so I've ended up saving my points allowance and it was more than enough to get you something."

"You didn't have to do this Tobias. Just seeing you was enough."

"I know, but I wanted to."

"Thank you." He nodded, a small smile on his face.

"Here, do you want me to help you put it on?" Beatrice nodded and handed him the necklace. He unclasped it and hung it around her neck, connecting the clasp so the chain hung low on her neck. She slipped the charm underneath her dress and turned around to find Tobias standing here, looking at her.

He pushed her against the wall of the cavern, reconnecting their lips in a passionate kiss. Their bodies were pressed against each other. Her lips stung from the pressure, but she didn't care. All Beatrice cared about was Tobias. He pulled away, looking her in her eyes.

"I love you Bea. Don't forget it, okay?" She nodded "Are you still going to the training room every night?"

"Yeah, why?" He nodded.

"Good. I'll be there in two months, once my initiation is over. Wait for me, okay?" Beatrice nodded again. "I love you."

"I love you, Toby." He pulled her into a tight hug, before letting her go back to the crowded room of black clothed people.

After their goodbye, Beatrice caught a train ride home. Jumping into a cart was easier the second time than it had been the first. It seemed like she would get home in time, so the only thing that would look suspicious was her missing school. That would be easy enough to explain, though. Especially since Abnegation don't ask too many questions.

The heart charm felt cool against her chest, reminding her of who she was leaving behind. Again. Anytime she was around Toby she felt like herself, like the best version she could possibly be. She would get to see him again in two months, and if she just focused on school work and volunteering that time would go by fast.

No it wouldn't. Stop lying to yourself.

When the train neared Abnegation, Beatrice jumped off in a relatively deserted area. She landed on her back, unable to catch her balance quickly enough. She stood up, brushing the dust off of her grey clothes before glancing around. Her surroundings were clear, so she started walking towards her house. She could start cooking dinner and act like nothing abnormal had happened at all. Perfect Abnegation girl.

She got closer to the neighborhood, but before she walked through the gates someone blocked her way. An all too familiar person, with an all too familiar angry and disappointed look.

"I'm glad to see you made it back from Dauntless unharmed, Beatrice."

Marcus.
