After an hour of walking under the Nevada desert sun, Mr. Monk was finally rescued. When the paramedics arrived, Adrian alerted them about Natalie and the Sheriff, who also needed to be rescued, mentioning that the Sheriff was seriously injured.

Adrian was placed in the ambulance, and when the paramedic was about to administer the IV, his fear of needles took over. Without allowing the paramedic to touch him, Adrian made excuses, insisting he was feeling better and didn't need the IV. The impatient paramedic tried persuading him, but Adrian kept his arm crossed over his chest, refusing any intervention.

Suddenly, the ambulance door opened and Natalie appeared inside.

"Oh my God, Mr. Monk! Are you okay?"

With a hoarse voice from a dry throat, Mr. Monk replied:

"Natalie, tell him I don't need an IV. I'm feeling better already."

"Ma'am," the paramedic interjected, "there's no way he's better. He's severely dehydrated. When we found him, he was unconscious. We really need to start the IV, but he's refusing."

"Yes, he... he has a needle phobia." Natalie held Adrian's hand, trying to convince him. "Mr. Monk, you have to let them give you the IV, please."

"NO!" Adrian whispered, wincing from the pain in his throat.

Natalie took a deep breath, knowing it would be a tough battle to persuade him. The paramedic then suggested:

"Ma'am, we'll take him to the hospital and administer a sedative."

"NO!" Adrian shouted. Doing so made his throat feel like it was tearing and he became dizzy.

"He also doesn't like hospitals..." Said Natalie.

The paramedic looked at her irritably and then told the driver to head to the hospital. Adrian grabbed Natalie's hand.

"Mr. Monk, it's going to be okay. We've been through hospitals before, and it always turns out fine in the end. You'll see."

He tightly closed his eyes, shaking his head in denial. Natalie could sense his desperation and knew she had to distract him. Then the craziest idea crossed her mind. She leaned close to the paramedic's ear and whispered.

"I'm going to distract him. As soon as I do, you insert the needle. Ok?"

With not much choice, the paramedic agreed. Natalie approached Adrian's face.

"Mr. Monk..."

She gently held his face with both hands, and he opened his eyes. Doing her best to block his peripheral vision, she moved closer and kissed him on the lips.

Adrian froze momentarily, then slowly she opened her eyes slightly, and saw that he had closed his again. Meanwhile, the paramedic successfully inserted the needle into his left arm. Natalie's heart raced as she lingered the kiss a few seconds longer before pulling away.

As Adrian began to open his eyes, he looked at her incredulously, not quite comprehending what had just happened. Natalie took a deep breath, pulled out a tissue from her purse, and smiled.

"Sorry, Mr. Monk. It was the only way I could think of to distract you."

Adrian attempted to speak several times before finally managing to say:

"Distract?"

"Yes... Look!" Natalie pointed to his arm.

Adrian was shocked. He hadn't felt anything but Natalie's lips at that moment. She handed him the tissue, expecting him to wipe his lips, but instead, he closed his eyes and sighed with a smile.

"Thank you, Natalie."

The confusion still lingered on his face as he processed what had just happened. The image of the needle in his arm was a reality he preferred not to confront, but Natalie's distraction had been effective, albeit unexpected.

Natalie smiled gently, relieved to see him receiving the necessary treatment. "You'll feel better soon, Mr. Monk. It just needed to be done."

Adrian nodded slowly, still processing everything. He wasn't good with displays of affection or unexpected situations, but Natalie's action, however unconventional, had worked. He felt strangely grateful to have someone like her by his side, someone who understood his fears.

As the ambulance continued its journey towards the hospital, Natalie remained beside Adrian, holding his hand firmly. She knew there was still much to face, but at least now he was getting the care he needed. And somehow, that moment of desperation in the Nevada desert had brought them closer, reinforcing the special bond they shared.

Adrian closed his eyes again, focusing on controlling the anxiety that always accompanied him in medical situations. And by his side, Natalie stayed, ready to support him every step of the way.

THE END.
