Penny stood at the entrance of the clinic's room, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Her usually bright eyes were clouded with worry as she watched her father, Pietro Polendina, examining Jaune Arc, who lay unconscious on the bed. The soft beeping of the aura-monitoring device filled the air.
"Penny, darling, please try to stay calm," Pietro said, his voice gentle but firm. He cast a glance at the device, noting the red indicators that showed Jaune's aura levels were critically low. "Jaune's aura is in a constant state of being drained, as if it's being used for something beyond his control."
Penny nodded, though the anxiety in her chest did not lessen. "Father, I found him in his garden. He was unconscious and I was worried so then I brought him to his couch while he was having a nightmare and then he collapsed again. I didn't know what else to do."
"You did the right thing by bringing him here," Pietro assured her. He carefully placed his hands on Jaune's temples, closing his eyes to concentrate. "His aura is almost completely depleted. It's very similar to what happened before, according to Winter Schnee… though I wonder if he'll keep on sleeping for five days."
Penny's eyes widened. "Did Miss Winter visit ?"
Pietro nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Briefly, yes. She mentioned that this has happened before and that Jaune's aura should recover in time. However, I need to understand what's causing this. It's somewhat fascinating and at the same disturbing."
Penny watched as her father adjusted the settings on the aura-monitoring device. The screen flickered, displaying complex readings that Penny struggled to interpret. "What's causing it, Father? Why is this happening to Jaune?"
Pietro went into deep thought, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the side of the device. "The effects remind me of the aura transfer machine, the one that can transfer aura from one person to another. But in this case, Jaune is experiencing the same effect of receiving someone else's aura."
"Receiving?" Penny's confusion was evident in her voice. "But how is that possible?"
"I'm not entirely sure," Pietro admitted, his face etched with concern. "From the readings, it looks like Jaune's aura is being amplified to such a dangerous degree that it outright shatters. To put it into perspective, when this happened to him it felt like he had received the trained aura of an adult man who had trained his aura for years. But now, it appears he's receiving the aura of a younger aura user… and as you know, Aura can be trained, and the first one should have caused more damage, but this time the sudden disruption on his aura made him a breakdown. To put it bluntly it's like there's a hole that keeps on siphoning his aura."
Penny looked at Jaune's pale face, her worry deepening. "Is there any way to stop it? To help him recover?"
"We need to understand the source of this disturbance first," Pietro replied, his voice steady. "Until then, all we can do is monitor him and ensure he remains stable."
Penny nodded, though her concern did not wane. She moved closer to Jaune, gently taking his hand in hers. "Jaune, please be okay," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Pietro observed his daughter, a mixture of pride and sorrow in his eyes. He knew how much Penny cared for her friends and how deeply she felt their pain. "Penny, why don't you take a break? You've been here for hours."
"I can't leave him, Father," Penny said, her voice resolute. "Jaune is my friend. I need to be here for him."
Pietro smiled softly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I understand, my darling. But you need to take care of yourself too. Jaune wouldn't want you to exhaust yourself. How about you recharge yourself, darling? Watch over your fishes? Perhaps run some some system troubleshoots?"
Reluctantly, Penny nodded. "Alright, but just for a little while. Promise you'll call me if anything changes?"
"Of course," Pietro agreed, his tone soothing. "Go rest, and I'll keep a close watch on Jaune."
Penny reluctantly left the room, casting one last glance at Jaune before stepping out. Pietro turned his full attention back to the young man on the bed, his mind racing with possibilities and potential solutions.
As the hours passed, Pietro continued to monitor Jaune's condition, meticulously noting any changes. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was a missing piece to this puzzle, something that could explain why Jaune's aura was behaving so erratically.
Suddenly, the aura-monitoring device emitted a sharp beep. Pietro's eyes snapped to the screen, where a new reading was displayed. His heart skipped a beat as he analyzed the data. It showed a brief, yet significant, spike in Jaune's aura levels before plummeting back down.
Pietro's mind raced. "Could it be...a form of aura synchronization?" He murmured to himself.
He quickly reached for his scroll, preparing to contact Winter Schnee for more information. If anyone had additional insights or had witnessed similar phenomena, it would be her.
Before he could make the call, Jaune stirred on the bed, a soft groan escaping his lips. The new reading on his aura displayed that his aura was back to full. Pietro leaned closer, his voice gentle but urgent. "Jaune? Can you hear me?"
Jaune's eyes fluttered open, his gaze unfocused. "Penny…where's Penny?" he croaked.
"She's recharging, Jaune. You need to stay calm and try to relax," Pietro said, his tone comforting. "Can you tell me what happened? Do you remember anything?"
"I… was drinking… and I had, I think an alcohol-fueled delirium," Jaune said, his demeanor sharp, as if the gears in his head were working hard to catch up. "Did… Penny brought me here?"
"She was quite worried," Pietro said.
"Shit," Jaune cupped his face. "This is embarrassing. I… have utterly made a fool of myself. I apologize for the inconvenience, Doctor Polendina."
Pietro Polendina raised a hand. "Don't mention it, a friend of Penny is a friend of mine. Jaune, she treats you like a brother and honestly she was more worried about you than anything. I don't have a right to say this, and I know we all have our own ways to cope… but this isn't the best."
"I know."
"Now, may you tell me what happened? Don't miss out on any details."
Jaune explained. His previous case where his aura shattered and what happened. Pietro strokes his chin, listening quietly.
Pietro watched Jaune closely, his mind racing with possibilities as he considered the data and the young man's condition. The peculiar fluctuations in Jaune's aura suggested an external influence, something that didn't quite fit with conventional aura depletion. A thought nagged at the back of Pietro's mind, a hypothesis that seemed almost too far-fetched but was worth exploring given the unusual circumstances.
"Jaune, I need to ask you something," Pietro began, his tone serious yet compassionate. "Have you consumed anything that might have been infused with Dust?"
Jaune blinked, his brow furrowing in confusion. "Uh, yes, the Dust-infused drinks? I… I think so. I had whiskey with a bit of ice dust in it. Why?"
Pietro's eyes narrowed as he considered this information. Dust, the powerful crystalline substance that could manipulate the elements, had significant effects when used in combat and technology. However, its impact on aura, especially when ingested, was less understood and potentially hazardous.
"I have a theory," Pietro said slowly, gathering his thoughts. "Dust is known for its ability to enhance abilities and augment physical properties and even Semblances to some, but it also carries risks. When ingested, it can interact with a person's aura in unpredictable ways. Given your aura's erratic behavior and the fact that this incident occurred after consuming Dust-infused drinks, it's possible that the Dust is causing your aura to fluctuate uncontrollably. Do you understand?"
"I've seen what someone can do with Dust, Doctor," Jaune's eyes widened a bit. "So you think the dust-drinks are responsible for this?"
"It's a strong possibility," Pietro replied, his voice steady. "Dust-infused drinks are often marketed for their exhilarating effects, but they can be dangerous, especially for someone with a powerful aura and semblance like yours. The Dust could be amplifying your aura beyond its natural limits, causing it to shatter and deplete rapidly."
Jaune seemed to digest this information, his expression a mix of concern and contemplation. "I've never heard of anything like this happening before."
Pietro nodded, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. "That's the part I'm still trying to understand. Dust has many properties, and when combined with alcohol and other substances, its effects can be even more unpredictable. It might be creating a resonance or a feedback loop with your aura."
Jaune ran a hand through his white-streaked hair, clearly troubled by the implications. "I never thought a night out could lead to something like this. I've always been careful with my aura, but I guess I didn't consider the risks of Dust-infused drinks affecting me."
Pietro offered a reassuring smile. "It's not something most people would think about. Dust is a powerful tool, but it needs to be used responsibly. What matters now is finding a way to stabilize your aura and prevent this from happening again."
Jaune nodded, his determination evident. "What can I do to fix this? Is there a way to counteract the effects of the Dust?"
Pietro leaned back, considering their options. "First, we need to ensure that your aura is not exposed to any more Dust until we fully understand its effects on you. Avoid any drinks or substances that could contain Dust."
Jaune listened intently, absorbing the advice. "I'll do whatever it takes. I don't want to go through this again, and I definitely don't want to worry Penny any more than I already have."
"Good," Pietro said, feeling a sense of relief at Jaune's resolve. "We'll monitor your progress closely and make adjustments as needed. In the meantime, it's also important to stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. Your body and aura need time to recover."
As they continued discussing the steps Jaune could take to recover, Pietro couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to uncover about the effects of Dust-infused drinks. The implications for aura manipulation were profound, and it warranted further investigation.
"Jaune, do you remember anything specific about the drinks you had? The types of Dust used or the combinations?" Pietro asked, hoping for more clues.
Jaune thought for a moment, then nodded. "One of the drinks had Fire Dust, I remember it because of the warmth it gave off. Another had Ice Dust, and there was one with Lightning Dust too. They were pretty strong."
Pietro's mind raced with the possibilities. Each type of Dust had unique properties, and the combination of different Dust types could create complex reactions. "It's possible that the different types of Dust interact with each other and with your aura in ways we haven't seen before. Fire, Ice, and Lightning Dust each have distinct effects, and their combined influence could be amplifying the fluctuations in your aura."
Jaune looked troubled but also determined. "So, I need to avoid Dust drinks entirely?"
"For now, yes," Pietro affirmed. "Until we can fully understand how they affect your aura, it's best to err on the side of caution. We don't want to risk another incident like this."
Jaune nodded, his resolve clear. "Thank you, Dr. Polendina. I'll follow your advice. Again, I'm really sorry for this."
Pietro smiled warmly. "You're welcome, Jaune. Please avoid them. It's a shame to see such a young man result to such vices... and my daughter is rightfully worried that she'll lose a friend. Please take care of yourself, Jaune."
"Yes," Jaune muttered.
As Jaune lay back down to rest, Pietro made a mental note to research the effects of Dust on aura more thoroughly. There was still much to learn about the interactions between Dust and aura, and this case with Jaune could provide valuable insights.
He also planned to reach out to Winter Schnee for any additional information she might have on similar cases. If Jaune's experience was part of a larger pattern, understanding it could help prevent future incidents and improve the safety of Dust usage in all its forms.
For now, however, Pietro was focused on ensuring Jaune's recovery and stability.
Penny, now stood outside the room, her mind awhirl with worry and concern for Jaune. Despite her father's reassurances, she couldn't shake the image of Jaune lying unconscious, his aura dangerously low. She paced back and forth in the hallway, her anxiety mounting with each passing minute.
Finally, unable to stay away any longer, Penny reentered the room. Jaune was sitting up in bed, looking groggy but alert. Pietro was adjusting the settings on the aura-monitoring device, his face calm and focused.
"Penny," Jaune said, his voice rough but sincere. "I'm so sorry for causing all this trouble. I didn't mean to worry you."
Penny rushed to his side, her eyes wide with relief and concern. "Jaune, you have nothing to apologize for. I'm just glad you're awake and feeling better. You scared me."
Jaune looked down, his cheeks reddening with embarrassment. "I didn't mean to scare you. I was stupid, and I should have been more careful. I didn't realize how dangerous those Dust-infused drinks could be to me."
Penny placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "It's okay, Jaune. What matters is that you're alright now. But you need to promise me something."
Jaune looked up, meeting her earnest gaze. "Anything, Penny. I owe you and Dr. Polendina so much for this."
Penny took a deep breath, her expression serious. "You need to regulate your drinking. No more Dust-infused drinks or anything that could put your aura at risk. Promise me you'll be more careful from now on."
Jaune nodded solemnly. "I promise, Penny. I'll be more careful. I don't want to go through this again, and I definitely don't want to worry you like this ever again."
Penny smiled, a mix of relief and determination in her eyes. "Make it an Arc promise."
Jaune's expression softened, and he nodded once more. "An Arc never goes back on their word. I promise."
Penny's smile widened, and she gently squeezed his hand. "Thank you, Jaune. That means a lot to me."
Jaune managed a small smile in return, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. He was grateful for Penny's concern and support, even if it came with a stern reminder of the consequences of his …actions.
He couldn't afford to be reckless, especially not with friends who cared so deeply about him.
Jaune squeezed her hand lightly. "Thank you for taking care of me, Penny. I don't know what I would have done without you."
Penny's smile widened, and she stood up, a spark of excitement in her eyes. "Come on, Jaune. Oh, Oh, there's something I want to show you now that you're here."
Jaune raised an eyebrow but allowed himself to be pulled out of bed by Penny's enthusiastic grip. She led him through the hallway to a section of Pietro's pharmacy that he hadn't explored before. Penny stopped in front of a tanks filled with colorful fish, her eyes shining with joy.
"So these are your fishes," Jaune remarked, a smile tugging at his lips as he watched the vibrant betta fish swim gracefully through the water.
Penny nodded eagerly. "Yes! These are my betta fish. I've spent so much time building their aquariums and making sure they're happy and healthy!"
She pointed to a bright blue betta with flowing fins. "This is Cyan. He's a bit shy but very curious. And that one," she pointed to a vibrant red fish darting around energetically, "is Blaze. He's always full of energy and loves to show off."
Jaune watched as Penny's face lit up with each introduction. "You really care about them, don't you?"
Penny nodded, her smile unwavering. "I do. They bring me a lot of joy. Building their aquariums and watching them thrive makes me happy. It's like a little underwater world that I get to take care of."
She began to explain the details of her aquarium builds, her enthusiasm spilling over into every word. Jaune already knew of Penny's fascination with the fishes and seeing her sway left and right alongside her fist, he found them quite relaxing.
"I researched the best plants for betta fish and made sure to include lots of hiding spots and places for them to explore. The water needs to be at the right temperature, and I check it regularly to make sure it's perfect for them. I even made sure the lighting mimics their natural environment."
Jaune listened, genuinely interested and touched by her passion. "This is really amazing, Penny. You've put so much thought and care into this. The little fishes are lucky to have you."
Penny blushed, a rare display of shyness. "Thank you, Jaune. It's something I enjoy, and it helps me feel connected to the world in a different way. Watching them swim around, it's peaceful and calming."
Jaune found himself smiling more freely. "I can see why you love it so much. It's incredible what you've done here. These builds are insane."
Penny's eyes sparkled with happiness. "Would you like to feed them? They love it when someone new interacts with them."
Jaune nodded. She handed him a small container of fish food, and he carefully sprinkled some into the tank. The betta fish darted up to the surface, their vibrant colors flashing as they eagerly snapped up the food.
Penny watched with delight, her worries about Jaune momentarily forgotten in the shared moment of happiness. "They're so lively! It always makes me smile to see them so excited."
Jaune chuckled, feeling a sense of warmth spread through him. "It's kind of therapeutic, watching them. I can see why you find this so calming."
Penny nodded, her smile softening. "It is. And it's even better sharing it with a friend!"
Jaune looked at her. "No, thank you, Penny. For everything. For being here, for caring, and for sharing this with me. It means a lot."
Penny's smile was radiant as she squeezed his hand. "I'm just glad you're okay. That's all that matters to me."
Jaune felt a swell of emotion, appreciating Penny's unwavering support and kindness. "I'm lucky to have you as a friend, Penny. I promise I'll be more careful from now on. An Arc never goes back on its word."
Penny beamed, the joy of the moment lifting her spirits. "And I'll be here to remind you, just in case."
As Jaune watched Penny's betta fish swim gracefully through the water, a wave of nostalgia washed over him. He turned to Penny, who was still beaming with joy, and sighed softly.
"Penny, you remember when I first came to Mantle?" Jaune began, his voice filled with a mix of fondness and lingering uncertainty. "Back in those early months as a Mediator, I felt so lost. I was scared. Afraid I'd messed things up and make things worst instead. Everything was new, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to make a difference at all. Then you scared me. I really thought you died in Beacon... but there you were flying in the sky blasting Grimm with your lasers."
Penny turned her bright eyes toward him, her expression softening. "Yeah, you were a bit silly back then, but I think you made it work!"
Jaune chuckled, shaking his head. "I wouldn't have gotten this far without you, Penny. You've been there for me, especially when things got tough when Grimm became involved. Without your help during Arrowfell, I doubt I could have made a difference. Team BRIR would have kicked my ass and not having you around during the fight with Glass would have been a disaster. Gosh, you've always had my back, and I'm grateful for that."
Penny's smile grew even warmer. "You're like a brother to me, Jaune. Seeing you grow and succeed has been wonderful. I'm glad I could be there for you."
Jaune felt a lump in his throat, touched by Penny's words. "And you've been like a cool robo-sister. Hell, I'm sure my sisters won't mind having a cool honorary sister like you around. I'm really thankful for you being around. Without you being such a sunshine and rainbow, I truly believe I'd have remained bitter, angry, and unforgiving about what happened when I got expelled."
He paused, memories of his early struggles flooding back. "When I think about those days, I just remember your enthusiasm and genuine desire to help. I didn't want to ruin that, so I strove to be better. Sure, I relied on booze to maintain my composure, but other than Saphron being there for me at my lowest, it was also you, Penny. You were a ray of sunlight that helped me stay true to myself."
Penny's eyes shimmered, moved by Jaune's heartfelt words. "Jaune, I didn't realize how much that meant to you."
"See? You don't even know how kind you were being," Jaune laughed, then his voice was firm with conviction. "That's why anyone who tries to hurt Penny Polendina is will be on top of Jaune Arc's shit-list."
Penny laughed softly, a bit touched by his protective nature. "Thank you, friend. Then I'm glad to have your back."
They watched the fish swim in their vibrant world. Jaune couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for Penny's presence in his life. Just her being around had made him… better.
"You know, Penny," Jaune said after a while, "I'm really got lucky that you're around.."
"You're being cheesy now."
"I get emotional, okay? Wait, why do I hear something recording?"
"Oh it's nothing," Penny grinned. "Oh, come on, Jaune. Let me show you more about my aquarium builds. I've been working on some new designs, and I think you'll love them."
Jaune grinned, feeling lighter than he had in months. "I'd love that, Penny. Lead the way."
Penny eagerly led him to another section of the room, where several smaller tanks were set up. Each one was a masterpiece of careful planning and creativity, filled with colorful plants, intricate decorations, and, of course, more betta fish.
"This one," Penny said, pointing to a tank with a beautiful blue and green theme, "is my latest project. I wanted to create a serene, underwater paradise for these fish."
Jaune admired the tank, impressed by the level of detail and care that had gone into its creation. "It's amazing, Penny. You've really outdone yourself."
Penny simply beamed with pride. "Each one will be a little world of its own!"
Jaune smiled, feeling a deep sense of admiration for Penny's dedication. "Like a little piece of peace and happiness."
Penny nodded, her eyes shining with joy. "That's exactly what I wanted to achieve. A place where I can find peace and happiness, and share it with my friends!"
She was enthusiastic as ever.
Jaune genuinely laughed.
If anyone said to him Penny Polendina was just a machine… an artificial girl.
Then they'd be on his shitlist too.
Because she was more than that.
She was a girl who would not hesitate to give her life for thousands, and if need be take on the odds just to bring a message of hope to the stars.
She was a girl who saw the world through better and beautiful eyes.
Jaune thought that perhaps the voices were right.
Anyone that would try to hurt her would bring the worst of him.
"This has gone enough," the knight's voice said domineeringly. "We can be better than this. Do you wish those eyes to look at us with disappointment?"
Jaune decided to be better than this.
Because an Arc never breaks his word.
