The city lights of Atlas twinkled below, a constellation of artificial stars scattered across the expanse. Jaune Arc adjusted his tie, the crisp fabric of his black suit contrasting sharply with the yellow tie that added a touch of brightness to his ensemble. Across from him, Winter Schnee exuded a composed elegance, her white-gray suit perfectly tailored, her knee-high skirt and snowflake patterned black stockings adding a touch of femininity to her usual authoritative appearance.
They sat at a secluded table on the rooftop of one of Atlas' most exclusive restaurants. A gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers and freshly cooked gourmet dishes. For once, Jaune wasn't fretting over the bill — a welcome change from their previous outings where his concern over the expense had been a recurring theme.
As the waiter poured them each a glass of an expensive, non-dust-infused wine, Winter's eyes met Jaune's. "You seem more at ease tonight," she observed, her voice carrying a blend of curiosity and relief. "It was concerning seeing you like that."
Jaune chuckled, taking a small sip of his wine. "Yeah, I guess I am. I've learned a few things since our last outing. Like not to sweat the small stuff."
Winter raised an eyebrow, a slight smile playing on her lips. "And by small stuff, you mean the bill?"
"Exactly," Jaune replied, grinning. "Life's too short to worry about a few Lien, Win-win."
"Then more outings?"
"In these kinds of settings?" Jaune scanned the room, his composure was holding up, but it was easy to see that there were others who couldn't help but glance at Winter. "No, not really."
Winter just smiled, but the look on her eyes made Jaune think that these 'outings' weren't going to stop after this. Not that he minded. Winter had become a good friend of his and despite it all... he enjoyed speaking with her.
They enjoyed their appetizer in their usual comfortable silence, the cityscape providing a mesmerizing backdrop. The conversation soon drifted to lighter topics — recent movies, mutual acquaintances, and the latest news in Remnant. Yet, beneath the surface, Winter sensed there was something more significant on Jaune's mind.
Once their main course arrived, a delicate dance of flavors that blended seamlessly with the ambiance, Winter decided to broach a more serious topic. "Jaune," she began, her tone soft but steady, "About your... episode. While you were on a bender... that shouldn't happen again, Jaune."
Jaune's expression sobered slightly, but he didn't shy away from her gaze. "Yeah, it was embarrassing," he admitted. "But I'm dealing with it. I've learned to avoid dust-infused drinks and keep my alcohol intake in check."
Jaune checked the drinks they had. "Dr. Polendina mentioned it?"
"He did," Winter nodded, her eyes reflecting both concern and understanding. "Penny made you promise, didn't she?"
Jaune's face softened at the mention of their mutual friend. "She did. And an Arc never goes back on his word."
Winter's smile was tinged with warmth and admiration. "Good. I'm glad to hear that. It will do you good in the long run. Alcohol… is… never mind."
Their conversation shifted to some of their work. For Jaune, his role as a mediator in Mantle had become a calling. It was a position that suited him well—bridging gaps, resolving conflicts, and fostering understanding between disparate groups.
"And how are things on your end?" Jaune asked, genuinely interested. "I know being in charge of the Atlesian forces can't be easy... and I can see that something happened as well... are you okay?"
Winter looked in surprised. "You... can tell?"
"Win, I recently fought one a few months ago. My guts are telling me and that I saw a spark in your eyes."
"Perceptive enough to notice, but not enough to notice how bad your vices are."
"Hey, lay off, okay?" Jaune took a sip of his wine.
"You should add non-dust-infused wine to that."
Jaune looked at her oddly. "You ordered this. Besides, I'll do it for business only."
"You don't want to drink with me?"
"And when among friends, too. Geez, can we go back to the ice queen mode now please?"
"Oh, you'd like that don't you?"
"Think what you want... So... about work?"
Winter sighed, her expression growing more serious. "It's challenging, to say the least. There's always a crisis to manage, a threat to neutralize. But it's also incredibly fulfilling. Knowing that I'm helping to protect Atlas and Mantle... it gives me purpose and with these new powers..."
She looked away with her mind elsewhere.
Jaune took a casual look on the table next to them. "I still don't know how you manage it all. I know how the power transfer is according the info we got from Haven... are you okay?"
"I'm fine now," Winter chuckled, poking the back of Jaune's hand. "And I could say the same."
"What same? Winter, I got drunk and made a fool of myself while you can fly now."
"Oh, yeah, Branwen could... I can now?"
"You should make test flights with Penny."
"Want to join?"
"No. I don't want to be the only one who can't fly."
They continued to talk, sharing stories of their respective duties, the challenges they faced, and the small victories.
As the evening wore on, they lingered over dessert, a decadent creation that neither could resist despite their full stomachs. Then seeing the time, they stood to leave, Jaune offered Winter his arm, which she accepted with a graceful nod. They descended the rooftop, and disappeared from the sight of the crowd, blending in. As they walked, the conversation shifted to the upcoming Vytal Festival in Vale, a topic that brought a mix of excitement and concern to their minds.
"Sooo… the Vytal Festival is almost here again?" Jaune mused aloud, his thoughts drifting back to the last festival and the chaos that had ensued. "Can't believe it's in Vale again"
Winter nodded, her expression thoughtful. "Yes, it's hard to forget. But this time, things will be different."
Jaune looked at her, a hint of skepticism in his eyes. "How so?"
Winter's gaze was steady, as she adjusted her hair while Jaune carried her purse for her.
"We've been preparing extensively. Security measures are much more rigorous, and the Headmasters are taking every precaution. They're not going to be caught off guard again."
Despite her reassurances, Jaune couldn't shake his apprehension. "I hope you're right. The last festival was... intense, to say the least. Not that I had a good look since I got knocked out during the chaos."
Winter placed her hands behind her back, watching the late-night crowd. "I understand your concern, Jaune. But if it helps, we can consult about the security details."
Jaune chuckled, shaking his head. "I appreciate that, Winter, but I'm not exactly an expert in security. I'm just a mediator."
"And a Huntsman," Winter smiled, a glint of humor in her eyes. "Don't sell yourself short. Your ability to read people and situations could be quite useful. Besides, you should prepare your meet-and-greet routine. There will be plenty of dignitaries and officials to charm."
Jaune sighed, a reluctant smile tugging at his lips. "Guess I'll need to brush up on my small talk, then."
Winter laughed softly, her expression softening. "You'll do fine. I've seen you talk an entire island to protesting. Just be yourself. That's more than enough."
They continued to walk, the conversation flowing easily. As they discussed the upcoming festival, Jaune's initial worry began to ease, replaced by a sense of cautious optimism. Winter's confidence was infectious, and he found himself feeling a bit more hopeful about the event.
"So, how are things shaping up for the festival?" Jaune asked, genuinely curious. "I mean, aside from the security preparations."
Winter's expression grew more animated as she described the various events and activities planned for the festival. "It's going to be spectacular since they truly want to make a show this time.. There's the usual tournament, cultural exhibitions, and plenty of opportunities for people to connect and celebrate. The festival is about unity, after all."
Jaune nodded, his excitement growing. "I just hope everything goes smoothly."
Winter's smile was reassuring. "It will. We've learned from the past, and we're better prepared this time. Besides, we'll be there to handle anything that comes up."
Jaune said nothing.
They walked in companionable silence for a while.
As they reached their destination, Jaune turned to Winter, his expression earnest. "Well, I better prepare myself for the trip to Vale, then."
Winter's gaze softened, she then deftly adjusted Jaune's tie before running her hand down on his shoulder. "Later?"
"Yeah, later."
Jaune joined a stream of people and walked with them.
In his home in Mantle, Jaune carefully folded his clothes, placing them in the suitcase with slow precision. Each item had its place: shirts and pants neatly stacked, undergarments tucked into corners, and socks rolled up to fill any gaps. He checked his list twice, making sure nothing was forgotten.
Next, he added essential supplies: a backup Scroll, a few books, and some snacks for the journey. He also packed a first-aid kit, though he could use his Semblance, he wasn't able to do anything with the likes of infection.
With his luggage almost complete, Jaune turned his attention to Crocea Mors, his trusted sword. He placed it on the table and began the meticulous task of maintenance. Jaune's hands moved with practiced ease, unsheathing the blade and inspecting it for any signs of wear.
He retrieved a sharpening stone and methodically honed the blade's edge, ensuring it was razor-sharp. The sound of metal on stone filled the room, a rhythmic reminder of his dedication to his craft. Jaune checked the blade's balance, making slight adjustments to maintain its perfect alignment.
Jaune then focused on his shield, Crocea Mors' companion piece. The shield's dust compartment needed careful inspection. He opened the compartment, checking the dust crystals inside. Each crystal was a potential lifesaver in battle, and Jaune meticulously ensured they were secure and undamaged.
Using a small brush, he cleaned the residue from the shield's channels. The fine dust could interfere with the shield's mechanisms if left unchecked. Every movement made was deliberate and precise.
Satisfied with his work, Jaune grabbed his troubleshooting tool, a multi-purpose device designed for field maintenance. He performed a final check on both the sword and shield, ensuring all components were in optimal condition. Once he was confident everything was perfect, he placed Crocea Mors gently to the side.
Returning to his luggage, Jaune added the last few items: personal hygiene products, a spare pair of boots, and a small memento from home — a photo of his family. With everything packed, he closed the suitcase and secured it with a lock.
Jaune strapped Crocea Mors to his waist, feeling the familiar weight of the weapon. It was a comforting presence, like it was a part of him that he can't leave home without. He took one last look around his townhouse, ensuring everything was in order.
Before leaving, Jaune pulled out his Scroll and sent a quick message to Cyanne, his co-worker. "Hey Cyanne, can you watch the house while I'm gone?" he typed.
Cyanne responded almost immediately with a simple "Okay." Jaune smiled, grateful for her help. As he stepped outside, he saw Penny carrying her own luggage. A finger poked out from the edge of her bag, and Jaune couldn't help but remark, "Carrying some spare limbs, I see?"
Penny grinned, "You never know when you might need them."
Jaune loaded his luggage into his car, securing it tightly. Penny hopped into the passenger seat. They drove to the port where Winter's private airship awaited them. The drive was smooth, and Jaune used the time to mentally prepare for the journey ahead.
Upon arrival, the crew noticed Jaune and saluted him. Jaune returned their salutes and engaged in brief small talk, appreciating their dedication. The airship, sleek and imposing, stood ready for departure.
Jaune boarded the airship and made his way to his usual cabin which was clean and well-maintained. He placed his luggage in the corner, making sure everything was secure. After a quick inspection, he left his cabin and headed towards Penny's.
Jaune found Penny in her cabin, carefully setting up a small aquarium. Somehow, she managed to sneak it on board. "Taking Blaze with you?" Jaune asked with a grin, noticing the red betta fish swimming inside.
Penny smiled brightly, "Yes! Blaze is my good luck charm. I am going to show it to Ruby!"
Her room was arranged for her. Advanced equipment had lined the walls, helping to maintain her systems and ensure she was always at peak performance. The setup was impressive.
After Jaune and Penny were done checking on their cabin room, they strode into the briefing room, the heavy door closing with a soft thud behind them. The room was abuzz with quiet conversation, the murmur of voices blending into a steady hum. Officers and Huntsmen, all clad in their uniforms, were gathered around a large, holographic table that displayed a detailed map of Vale and its surrounding territories.
Winter Schnee stood at the head of the table, her posture impeccable, exuding an air of authority. She noticed Jaune's arrival, giving him a glance and a nod. Jaune responded with a respectful nod of his own before taking a seat. Penny sat beside him, her eyes bright with anticipation.
Winter's voice cut through the room, silencing the murmurs. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for assembling on such short notice. As you all know, the Vytal Festival is upon us. This event is not just a celebration of unity and peace, but also a significant opportunity for political diplomacy and fostering international relations."
She tapped a button on the console, and the holographic display zoomed in on the Amity Colosseum, the central hub of the festival. "Given the events of the last festival, we cannot afford any lapses in security. Our primary objective is to ensure the safety of all participants and spectators."
The memory of the previous festival's chaos lingered in the air. Faces around the table grew solemn as Winter continued. "We will be heading to Vale first to conduct a thorough assessment of the security arrangements. Any anomalies or weaknesses must be identified and reported to General Ironwood immediately."
Winter's gaze swept over the room, her eyes settling on Jaune. "Mr. Arc will serve as our mediator. His role will involve extensive interaction with diplomats and representatives from various kingdoms."
The crowd seemed like they had expected it and even approved.
Jaune nodded at their approval and then checked the document placed in front of him by an officer.
Winter's attention shifted to Penny. "Miss Polendina, you will accompany me throughout this operation. Your abilities and insight will be invaluable."
Penny's eyes sparkled with determination as she nodded firmly. "Yes, ma'am."
Winter's authoritative tone softened slightly as she addressed the room. "This mission demands our utmost professionalism and vigilance. Dismissed. What happened years ago must never happen again."
As the room began to empty, Jaune lingered behind with Penny and Winter. The formal atmosphere dissolved into a more relaxed conversation. Winter approached Jaune, her demeanor still composed but less rigid. "How are you feeling about your role, Jaune?"
Jaune rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips. "A bit nervous as usual. Meeting with diplomats isn't exactly fun."
Winter's raised a brow. "Sometimes excessive humility can be seen as arrogance, Jaune."
Penny leaned in, her enthusiasm evident. "It does!"
Jaune chuckled, feeling the tension ease from his shoulders. "Thanks for the vote of confidence, I guess? I'll make sure to strut around like I own the place. I figured I'd train while we're heading there. What about you?"
Winter sighed. "Paperwork."
Initially, the conversation stayed focused on work, but it gradually shifted to Jaune's drinking habits which led to yet another Arc promise he had to keep.
A few days later.
Jaune and Penny stood on the observation deck, the wind tousling their hair. Vale's sprawling landscape was finally coming into view, a patchwork of forests, mountains.
Penny leaned over the railing, her eyes wide with wonder. "Vale is so beautiful from up here."
Jaune nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "Yeah, it is. Let's hope we can keep it that way."
Vale brought strange feelings to Jaune. It had been long since he was here and seeing it again… it felt like a strange land.
The airship descended towards Vale's main landing port. As they approached, Jaune could see the increased security presence. Soldiers and Huntsmen and Huntresses patrolled the area, their movements precise and coordinated. The airship touched down with a gentle thud, and the ramp extended.
Winter led the group down the ramp, her stride purposeful. Jaune and Penny followed, their eyes scanning the bustling activity around them. They were greeted by a delegation of Vale officials, who escorted them to a waiting convoy.
The drive through Vale's streets was both familiar and foreign. Jaune couldn't help but reminisce about his earlier days at Beacon Academy. The city had changed, the scars of past conflicts had healed and there was an underlying sense of resilience and hope.
The convoy arrived at their headquarters, a fortified building near the heart of the city. They were ushered into a large conference room, where a detailed briefing awaited them. Maps and documents were spread out on the table, highlighting key areas of concern.
Winter took charge, coordinating with the local security teams. Jaune observed her interactions, noting the respect she commanded. She spoke with clarity and precision, leaving no room for doubt.
Jaune's role as a mediator quickly became evident. He was introduced to various diplomats and representatives, each with their own concerns and agendas. He spent hours listening, taking notes, and offering reassurances. It was a delicate balance, but he navigated it as best as he could.
Penny, true to her word, was never far from Winter's side. She assisted with technical assessments, her unique abilities proving invaluable. Jaune watched as she deftly handled complex security systems and made thorough checks.
After a long day of assessments and meetings, Jaune found a moment of solitude on the rooftop of their headquarters. The city of Vale stretched out before him, its lights twinkling in the twilight. He felt a presence beside him and turned to see Winter.
"Taking a break?" she asked, her voice softer than usual.
Jaune nodded, leaning against the railing. "Just needed a moment to think."
Winter joined him, her gaze distant. "Been a while huh?"
Jaune glanced at her, seeing a hint of vulnerability beneath her composed exterior. "Yeah, barely recognized Vale."
Penny appeared, bounding over with her usual energy. "There you are! I've been looking for you two everywhere."
Jaune and Winter exchanged a glance as Penny then gave them a long tirade of her showing her fish to Ruby who was out there in the city. The two exchanged a sigh, letting Penny regale them with her excitement.
The days leading up to the Vytal Festival were a whirlwind of activity. Jaune's role as mediator kept him busy, his days filled with meetings and negotiations. He found himself rather comfortable in his role.
Winter and Penny also worked tirelessly, ensuring every aspect of the festival's security was scrutinized and optimized. The weight of their responsibilities was immense, but they carried it with grace and determination.
As the festival drew closer, the sense of anticipation grew. Vale was abuzz with excitement, the streets filled with visitors from all corners of Remnant. The Amity Colosseum finally appeared again on Vale's skies, hovering like a beacon of hope, a symbol of unity and strength as it was escorted by a fleet of airships.
The day of the opening ceremony arrived, and Jaune stood on side, watching as the crowd gathered. The air was filled with a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation. Music played, and colorful banners fluttered in the breeze.
Jaune was listening to a Vale Council member addressing the gathered dignitaries and officials, her voice carrying over the noise of the crowd. "Today, we stand united in celebration of the Vytal Festival. This event is a testament to our strength, our resilience, and our commitment to peace."
Jaune didn't have much of a reaction from the drawn out speech. He glanced at Penny, who was beaming with excitement, her eyes shining with joy, as she swayed around.
Following the ceremony, Jaune's role as mediator took priority. He moved through the crowd, engaging with diplomats and representatives from across the kingdoms. He met with officials from Vale, Mistral and Vacuo, each bringing their own concerns and perspectives.
The Mistral Officials were friendlier while Vacuo had asked opinion on how to deal with the Crown. He also did meet a Menagerie diplomat, who passed a message from Nyra, informing him of minor disputes, but it was mostly peaceful. Currently, Menagerie focused their efforts on rebuilding.
As the festival progressed, Jaune's focus shifted back to security. He worked closely with Winter and Penny, ensuring every detail was accounted for. They listened to the reports from regular patrols, coordinated with local authorities, and remained vigilant for any signs of trouble.
The festival grounds were a hive of activity, with visitors enjoying the various events and attractions. Despite the festive atmosphere, the memory of the past still lingered.
One evening, as the festival continued in full swing, Jaune found a moment of calm. He stood on a balcony overlooking the city, the sounds of laughter and music drifting up from below. Penny joined him, still full of energy.
"This festival is amazing," Penny said, her voice filled with wonder. "I wish I could have spent some with Ruby though."
Jaune nodded, his gaze fixed on the horizon. "Sure, everything should have been settled… you could use a break too. I think the security details are finished and I doubt more would add more."
"Oh, I can't wait! Do you want to join me?"
"I'd like to see Nora and Ren… but unfortunately maybe after the festival. That is if they are around."
Jaune was somewhat envious, but his role gave him little time for socialization with how uptight the security was.
The Vytal Festival Tournament was in full swing, the arena buzzing with excitement as the crowd cheered for their favorite fighters. Jaune Arc, dressed in formal attire, watched from a seating stand reserved for dignitaries and officials. As a Mediator for Atlas, his presence was required, though he also felt sad at not seeing familiar faces on the matches.
The match ended with a spectacular finish, and the crowd erupted in applause. Jaune stood, stretching his legs and making a show of checking his Scroll. He excused himself from the stand, intending to find a drink and maybe a moment of peace.
As he turned towards the concession area, a voice stopped him.
"Mr. Arc," came the calm, familiar tone of Headmaster Ozpin.
Jaune slowly halted and looked over his shoulder. Flanked by Glynda Goodwitch, Headmaster Ozpin approached with an air of authority that Jaune once respected. He had been avoiding this meeting, letting Winter and General Ironwood handle the communications with Beacon.
He turned slowly, schooling his features into a mask of professionalism. "Headmaster Ozpin, Professor Goodwitch," he greeted, his voice steady and devoid of emotion. "I am Jaune Arc, acting Mediator for Atlas."
Ozpin offered his hand, but Jaune made no move to shake it. Instead, he clasped his off-hand on the side, maintaining a formal stance as his sword-arm palms Crocea Mors pommel. Jaune's face not unfriendly, nor he showed displeasure, he simply looked at the Headmaster with the practiced face of a Mediator.
"Mr. Arc," Ozpin said, lowering his hand with no sign of offense. "I was hoping we could have a word."
Jaune's eyes flicked to Glynda, who observed him with a keen gaze. He could sense her noting every detail of his demeanor, but she remained silent.
"Of course," Jaune replied, forcing a polite smile. "Perhaps we could join General Ironwood and Specialist Schnee. They would be more suited to discuss matters of—"
Ozpin interrupted gently but firmly. "I believe a private conversation would be more appropriate for this."
Jaune's facade remained intact. He glanced at his Scroll, pretending to check the time, and then nodded reluctantly. "Very well. Lead the way."
Ozpin and Glynda guided him to a quieter corner of the arena, away from the bustling crowds and the eyes of other officials. The sounds of the tournament faded slightly, replaced by the murmur of distant conversations.
And then the voices in his head who had been eerily silent for days were back, as if they had rested enough and were ready to take on Remnant again.
