andrewjeeves: It was the wrong name actually. Sometimes I forget who is who. But now you're going to see in this chapter why I kept it as such. Maybe Aki wouldn't have had Aroma cards, but she should have beaten Andre. There was no reason to negate all of her dedication and training so Yusei could defeat three opponents in a row. We already saw that in Crash Town.

Chapter 33 – World Riding Duel Grand Prix Preliminaries Part 2
Aki vs Breo

"I play the Speed Spell – High Speed Crash!" She reveals another Speed Spell, this one being one Yusei used before. "If I have 2 or more counters, I can destroy one card I control and one card you control. And I think I'll aim for that card!"

Seed of Flame rushes forward comically, before diving at the left facedown on Andre's field. It explodes on contact, and the hidden card is revealed to be The End of Storm.

"Yes! She destroyed The End of Storm!" Crow cheers with a grin.

'Gotcha…' "Magic Charge, activate!" Andre reveals his last trick, a trap card. "When a card I control is destroyed by your card effect, both players will take 2000 points of damage!"

"What?!" A crystal forms before the two of them. It charges with magical energy, before detonating. Andre cries out along with Aki.

Aki: 5500 (SC8)

Andre: 0000 (SC12)

"WHAT'S THIS?! IZAYOI DEFEATED ANDRE, MAKING UP FOR THE BIG LOSS TEAM 5D'S HAD!"

As the turn drops into the End Phase, Aki's cards finish activation. "Due to Seed of Flame's effect, I can special summon a Plant monster from my graveyard. Also, you gain a Seed token."

Lonefire Blossom returns to her field as a burning seed forms on Andre's field.

Jean narrows his eyes. "She's a troublemaker indeed… but, her deck strategy is already laid out for us."

"Wait, you want me to go in second? Keep to the plan?"

"Her deck is about life point recovery, which means my strategy and Andre is at a disadvantage," he tells Breo, smirking as he continues saying, "but, there are two other ways to win a duel outside of life points."

Getting what he means by that, Jean smiles in understanding.

Over with Team 5D's, Aki passes by the pit. She catches sight of her friends waving and cheering her on. This brings joy to her heart. But the real happiness comes to her when she sees her father waving a flag and cheering.

"AKI!" shouts the senator shamelessly. His wife holds up a smaller flag with Aki's name on it.

As Andre pulls into the pit, he parks before removing his sticker. Breo grabs the sticker and slaps it onto his arm, before sliding Thunder Unicorn onto his machine. He throws on his helmet and speeds off, trailing behind Aki.

The two race in a line. "You're doing a pretty good job, Izayoi! Andre did well carrying out the duel despite such an audience."

"You're not going to look down on me too, are you?" Aki questions.

"Oh, far from it. The fact that I'm dueling you and not Jean is proof of it. And you're about to find out why."

"We'll see about that."

Aki: 5500

Breo: 4000

As Breo begins his turn, back with the Signers, Lua turns to Bruno. "Neh, what's Breo like? How does he duel?"

"I don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?" Crow asks, going over to the screen.

"In all of Team Unicorn's published duels, Andre has won them all; every duelist they've faced in three-on-three teams has fallen to Andre. There hasn't been any record on Jean or even Breo."

Even Luca is shocked. "So then, are they even as strong as Andre?"

"We don't know…"

Back to the duel, Breo looks at the blue unicorn before switching its battle position. "I'll switch Thunder Unicorn into attack mode, first. Second, I'll summon Bicorn Bison in defense mode!" Entering the field is a brown fur bison. It sports twin electric bolts for horns.

Bicorn Bison: 1300/2000 (4) Tuner

"Thunder Unicorn's effect! I will reduce Rosemary's attack power by 500." The electric horse neighs as it draws power from Bicorn Bison. It then fires upon Rosemary, dropping her power stats to 1300. "Battle! Thunder Unicorn, attack Rosemary!"

The unicorn charges at Rosemary, impaling and ripping off half of her torso with its Thunder Spear attack.

Aki: 4600

The damage catches Aki off guard, causing her to swerve and fall behind Breo. As this happens, the bison snorts before charging Aki. "Bison's effect; when a Beast monster I control deals damage while this card is in defense mode, you send one card from the top of your deck for every 400 points of damage you take."

"1 for every 400?" Aki looks at her deck as the bison turns into a phantom and passes through her deck and body. Two cards are taken as a result. She then takes two cards and dumps them into her graveyard, noticing one of them.

"Next up, I will set two cards and end my turn." She watches his movements before going into her turn.

'Why didn't he summon the Bison in attack mode? He could have attacked Rosemary and my blossom…' These thoughts plague Aki before she draws her card. Her SC increases to 10. 'I could destroy it, but I can use this instead.'

"I'll release Lonefire Blossom to special summon a Plant monster from my deck!" Her flower bulb blooms, turning into a brand-new monster. This male magician wields a bulkier staff adorned in red clothing and the scent of bergamot.

Bergamot: 2400/1800 (6)

"Battle! Bergamot, attack Thunder Unicorn!" The scent of Bergamot unleashes upon the unicorn. It relaxes in the pleasing scent before it explodes.

Breo: 3800

"Not bad. You're really owning up to being the second Wheeler of Team 5D's. But, I wonder if you're capable of working as a team."

"You mean like leaving cards for your partner?"

"Oh, it's more than that. It means working not as three individual horns…" Breo smirks, almost in a flirting way, "but as a single one."

Confused by what he means by that, Aki sets a card and ends her turn. "I end my turn."

Breo draws his card, before passing by the duel pit. He spots Jean smirking, signaling it's time for him to work. 'Allow me to show you just what that means.'

"I'll activate Summon Speeder! This Speed Spell allows me to special summon a level 4 or lower monster from my hand!" He reveals his monster as a tiny little mole with a flower for a nose.

Mine Mole: 1000/1200 (3)

"Next, I summon the Tuner Monster Bicorn Re'em!" This time, a yellow beast appears on the field, hoisting an orange mane and two horns.

Re'em: 800/1600 (4)

"A tuner?" Aki realizes what will happen when she sees it. He's going for a Synchro Summon.

"I'll tune my level 3 Mine Mole with my level 4 Tuner Bicorn Re'em!" The beast snarls before turning into four rings that pass through the mole.

"Galloping in the heavens like thunder, tearing apart the sea of clouds; these hooves will rip across the surface of the Earth! Synchro Summon!" From the light of Synchro appears Breo's ace monster, a two-horned unicorn dark green in fur with a lightning bolt behind it. Its red eyes focus on Aki's field. "Roar, Voltic Bicorn!"

Voltic Bicorn: 2500/2000 (7)

"It's stronger than Bergamot…" she says upon seeing the bicorn. 'But, if he attacks, he won't be.'

Lua freaks out. "Whoa! This guy is stronger than we thought!"

Jean nods as he calculates the next move. "At this point, Breo would attack. But, he's got something better in mind."

"Bicorn Re'em's effect. My opponent loses the top two cards of their deck." Voltic Bicorn turns into a phantom and speeds forward, ramming through Aki's deck. It hooks two cards.

"Speed World 2's effect; by removing 10 Speed Counters, I can destroy one card on the field!" As Breo's SC drops down to 2, Aki gasps when she realizes he might destroy her mage. But then, the biggest surprise of all takes over. "I will destroy Voltic Bicorn!"

"What?!" The bicorn roars as lightning strikes from Breo's D-Wheel, blasting it to bits.

"Why would he destroy his own monster?!" Crow shouts in shock.

"And now, Voltic Bircorn's effect activates; both players send cards from the top of their decks equal to Bicorn's level." Aki gasps when it hits; this is his real plan.

"Wait a minute… isn't this-" Bruno realizes as well what he's up to.

"Deck destruction," Yusei says with worry. "A strategy that attacks the deck and not the life points."

'So that's why he left Lonefire Blossom on the field. Because he knew it would help his goal!' Aki wordlessly ditches the top seven cards of her deck to the cemetery. She checks her deck count, and gasps at the realization; that there are only thirteen cards left inside for her. She needs to defeat him quickly.

"I'll end my turn with that."

Drawing for her turn, she puts up a screen showing her graveyard. 'I'll have to defeat him now.'

"Trap card open; Double Return." Breo's trap flips over, and a hole forms underneath Bicorn Bison and the Seed Token. "This trap can activate if a card I control was destroyed on my previous turn; it allows me to release two monsters on my field and special summon a Beast monster from my graveyard!"

Bison grits its teeth before shattering to nothing. The token disperses as well, robbing Aki of a chance to attack it. Voltic Bicorn returns to the field with a powerful neigh. Her team watches with worry; if she recklessly destroys it, she'll come that much closer to defeat.

'If I get rid of it now, he might have something… I'll have to wait!' "I'll end my turn."

"She passes?" Luca says with surprise.

"That's a hard play to make, but she made the right one," Yusei says while watching. "If she recovers life in any way, she runs the risk of drawing and depleting herself further. She can get rid of it with Black Rose Dragon, but if she destroys Bicorn, she may drown herself even deeper."

"It's a buck dancer's choice," Bruno adds.

Sherry silently watches the duel progress. 'Is this as far as you'll go?'

"Draw!" Breo begins his turn. Smiling, he opens his facedown card. "I activate my facedown – Multi-Horn Comeback!"

Breo's trap opens up, revealing to Aki a card that shows Thunder Unicorn, Voltic Bicorn, and a third monster she has yet to see. "While I control Voltic Bicorn, by skipping my Battle Phase, you lose the top 3 cards of your deck."

"Three?!" A phantom of the Bicorn rushes in and pierces her deck, robbing her of three cards. She ditches the top three to her graveyard, unable to stop him.

He proceeds to set a card and end his turn, not even bothering to touch his Speed Counters or her monsters despite them being weaker.

Aki looks at her hand. Remembering the cards she's had to mill, she shakes her head. 'I can't win with this hand… not yet. I need…'

Taking in a deep breath, Aki attempts to calm her nerves. She passes by the Duel Pit and spots the worried faces of her team. Strangely, Yusei isn't worried at all. He still believes in her.

… wait. Believe… 'That's it!'

Aki draws for her turn, putting her at eight cards in the deck. She slides that with the others before grabbing a new card. "I summon Glow Up Bulb." Her monster appears, being a small bulb with grass and a flower growing up above.

Glow Up Bulb: 0/0 (1) Tuner

Seeing it, Breo smirks when he realizes what she's going to do.

"I'll tune my level 6 Bermagot with my level 1 Tuner Glow-Up Bulb!" The bulb upchucks a star that turns into a ring. Bermagot confidently passes through the ring, his body transforming.

"Chilling flames shall engulf the whole of the world. Let the pitch-black flower bloom – Synchro Summon!" Flowers taking the form of wings sprout from the light as her ace monster appears. "Bloom, Black Rose Dragon!"

As Aki's dragon rises, the crowd looks on. Many of them remember what Aki did with it in her last public appearance. "Black Rose Dragon's effect! When it is Synchro Summoned, my dragon shall destroy all cards on the field including itself!"

"HERE IT COMES! THE INFAMOUS HURRICANE!"

"Black Rose Gale!" The dragon roars before unleashing a powerful windstorm. It destroys all of Breo's facedowns and Voltic Bicorn as well as Jasmine and the rest of Aki's field. The dragon then fades into the grave.

To the surprise of the audience, everyone realizes that nothing happened. The dragon has done no real damage outside of the duel. Even her normal haters are surprised; she has control over her powers?

"Voltic Bicorn's effect; you and I lose seven cards!" He takes his seven cards and ditches them.

Aki does so too but doesn't mind it. There is one card left in her deck. "Next, I will activate the effect of Glow-Up Bulb." She pulls a card from the top of her already thin deck. "By ditching the top card to my graveyard for every turn that has passed since, I can special summon it!"

"That's it! Aki's deck is gone!" says Bruno in shock, holding the sides of his face.

As the bulb returns, being the only card on the field, Aki smiles before taking one card from her hand. "Speed World 2's effect! I'll pay 4 Speed Counters to deal 800 points for every Speed Spell in my hand." She reveals her card as Synchro Return.

As a result, Breo's life points take a significant hit.

Breo: 3000

"Next, I'll activate my Speed Spell – Synchro Return!" A portal to another dimension pops open, and from it appears a star. "Return from banishment, Dawn Rose Knight!"

As her crimson knight makes a return, Breo gains a worried look on his face. 'Wait a minute… a level 1 Tuner. And a level 7 monster?'

Jean realizes this too. "Don't tell me…"

"I will tune my level 7 Dawn Rose Knight and my level 1 Glow-Up Bulb!" His bulb turns into another star before wilting into nothing. Dawn Rose Knight passes through, raising his sword to imitate a chivalrous charge. "Clustering wishes shall become a new star! Become the path the light shines upon; Synchro Summon!"

At that, the others get up when they recognize the chant. Except for Yusei, who knows the truth.

As the light of Synchro fades, the monster she summons reveals itself. It is the iconic white dragon someone else uses. "Take Flight, Stardust Dragon!"

Stardust Dragon: 2500/2000 (8)

Jean gets up from his seat, knocking it to the ground. "Stardust Dragon!?" He then turns to Team 5D's, and spots Yusei giving him a knowing look. The same he gave him.

"Yusei, you gave her Stardust?" asks Bruno in surprise.

"They gave us a surprise, so it's only right we do that."

In the audience, Lua and Luca's classmates are watching too. Among them is Sly, whose eyes widen seeing the dragon. 'What?! She gets to use his card, but no one else?! I'm a much better-'

Back to action, Aki speeds further, catching up to Breo. "If I didn't need it, I'd have won this. Go, Stardust Dragon!"

The dragon takes in a deep breath. "Reverberate – Shooting Sonic!" Its cosmic breath blasts Breo.

Breo: 500

"I'll set one card and end my turn."

Jean watches with worry as Aki concludes her turn. 'She's already passing on her hopes to Yusei… just as Andre did to Breo.' "We can't let that dragon stay on the field."

"On it." Andre takes out the pit board to give a heads up. Seeing it, Breo understands his next move.

"Draw!" Breo looks at his new card before a portal opens up above him. "At this Standby Phase, Multi-Corn Comeback activates."

From it, Voltic Bicorn comes out. "By banishing this trap card from the graveyard, I can special summon a Beast Synchro monster from the graveyard."

Seeing the bicorn, Aki realizes what he's trying to do. "Voltic Bicorn, attack Stardust Dragon!"

The dual-horned unicorn roars before charging. "Voltic Spear!"

Stardust draws its right arm back and slams into the Bicorn's skull. The impact shatters both of them to pieces. "And now, Bicorn's effect." The phantom attacks Breo's deck but doesn't bother with Aki.

"Shouldn't she have lost right now?" asks Luca, surprisingly unfamiliar with deck out strategies.

"Not necessarily. She only loses when she has to draw," Yusei explains. "Otherwise, nothing happens."

"Now all he needs to do is end his turn and Aki loses. Unless he tries something else!"

"Like he's going to complicate things any further by being an idiot and NOT ending his turn," Crow declares.

"I'll set one card and end my turn." Breo's card enters the field, leaving it the only card on his field. "Well, it's been fun, but now you have to-"

"At this End Phase," she says suddenly, surprising Breo, "I activate my facedown; Wicked Reborn."

Aki: 3800

"By paying 800 life points, I can target one Synchro Monster in my graveyard and special summon it." Her borrowed dragon rises from the depths of the grave, howling proudly.

Seeing it, Breo flinches when he realizes that she saved her field. Unfortunately, it's already the end of his turn so he can't do anything about it. Aki begins her turn.

Aki: Deck Out

Her engine blows open, signifying her defeat. She pulls into the pit, and lands by the center. Yusei is already on his machine, awaiting her. "Yusei, I'm sorry I couldn't defeat him…"

Yusei smiles at her warmingly. "Don't worry about it, Aki. You did amazing out there."

The sudden praise turns her cheeks red as she removes the cards and hands them to the third-wheeler. She then hands him the sticker flag, allowing Yusei to take over properly.

"Don't worry guys. Your efforts won't be wasted!" He revs his engine before taking off, entering the duel arena.

"HERE HE IS! TEAM 5D'S LAST WHEELER! HIS TEAMMATES HAVE HELD OUT, AND NOW IT'S UP TO HIM TO FINISH THE JOB. BUT CAN HE DEFEAT TWO DUELISTS ON HIS OWN?!"

Yusei draws for his turn.

Yusei: 4000 (SC 10)

Breo: 500 (SC 7)

Yusei picks a card from his hand and sets it. "I'll set one card and attack with Stardust Dragon directly! Shooting Sonic!"

His dragon inhales before firing at Breo. The blast hits point blank.

Breo: 0000

But as his engine pops open, his trap card lifts too. "Regretful Tuning activate." From the graveyard, Thunder Unicorn dashes to the field before landing next to Breo's D-Wheel. "When I take Battle Damage from a Direct Attack, I can special summon a Synchro Monster from my graveyard."

Yusei watches Breo pull into the Duel Pit, thinking about his last course of action. 'Why leave Thunder Unicorn? Why not Voltic Bicorn?' While the unicorn has a good effect, the bicorn is strong enough to destroy Stardust in Battle. Maybe he has another strategy than deck out.

Breo parks next to Jean. "Sorry man. I couldn't beat her sacrifice."

"Don't worry about it. You left the perfect monster for me to use." He takes his sticker and slaps it on before placing Thunder Unicorn on the field. He then drives forth, coming up behind Yusei.

"Well, it looks like we're the last fighters," Jean says as he speeds close to Yusei. "It stinks that Andre and you couldn't finish your duel."

"That's where this whole battle began, isn't it?" asks Yusei, thinking back to his remark prior.

"That's how you win as a team, Yusei."

The Head Signer nods in acknowledgment. "You guys are amazing. To think a team strategy was this deep and important… I'm glad we got to face you."

This surprises the leader of Team Unicorn. 'Is he enjoying this? Despite our tricks and traps?'

Yusei: 4000 SC11

Jean: 4000 SC8

Elsewhere, in the medic ward, Jack is on a stretcher watched by his girlfriend and fans. A television screen shows them the situation, and they can't believe things have turned out this way.

Jack awakens, catching the girls' attention. "What happened?"

"We're on the last turn. Yusei is about to face Jean," Mikage tells him.

"Jean? What about Izayoi?"

"She defeated Andre and lost to Breo."

"I see… what's the situation?"

Lightz: And now, we come to the final duel; Yusei vs Jean.

Type: Beast/Effect/Tuner

Stats: 1300/2000

Effect: If a Beast monster deals damage to your opponent, your opponent must send the top card of their deck to the graveyard for every 400 points of damage made. This card must be in defense mode to activate this effect. If this card is destroyed; your opponent sends the top card of their deck to the grave for every Beast monster you control upon resolution.

Name: Double Return

Effect: If a monster you control was destroyed on the previous turn: you can tribute two Monsters you control; special summon one of those monsters destroyed.

Name: Multi-Corn Comeback

Image: Thunder Unicorn, Voltic Bicorn, and Lightning Tricorn are together releasing a lightning strike upon an opponent.

Type: Continuous Trap Card

Effect: If you control a Beast Synchro monster, once per turn, apply one of the following effects depending on its level:

1-5 - You can banish one card in your hand; one monster you control can attack twice per turn. Other monsters you control cannot attack.

6-7 - You can skip your Battle Phase; send the top three cards of your opponent's deck to the graveyard.

8-12 - One Beast Synchro you control gains 100x its level, and neither player can activate card effects when it attacks until the end of the Damage Step.

You can banish this card from the graveyard; special summon one Beast Synchro Monster from your graveyard.
