Chapter 37 – Yusei vs Placido ~ The Immortal Wisel
Yusei looks around as he finds himself on the outskirts of town under the bright, shiny sun. Behind him miles away is Neo Domino City, covered in the viscous storm the Diablos have summoned. In front of him is the impact sight of the meteor that fell from heaven.
It is a colossal stone tablet, far larger than the ones that came prior; it might even be three times as big. 'This is…'
Yusei approaches the tablet, sliding down into the epicenter of the crater. He examines the object. It has nothing on it. "This must be what I saw in that path of light…"
As he entered Clear Mind, he saw a vision; a dragon from the future. It looks like it could have been an evolution of Stardust Dragon, but then he saw more. There were alternate versions of the card, of different futures. 'Maybe… this one is the future I depict…'
Reaching forward, Yusei places his hand on it. His marks shine in response, causing the stone to crack in three different ways. A bright white blinds him too.
Yusei opens his eyes, finding himself in a new place. It is the same world he entered prior, with Sherry and Bruno that day.
Just like before, he sees it; the same object from before that spoke to him. He commands, "Who are you?!"
The boy flinches when he hears voices in his head.

Flinching, he looks down noticing he has a card in his hand. Turning it around, it looks to be a Synchro Monster card. But unlike his others, it's blank.

"Wait!" Yusei reaches for the figure, its voice coming in clearer for him.

You will find out eventually.
Yusei steps forward as the machine person leaves. But once he plants his foot into the ground, he finds himself back in the desert. He still has the card, and the tablet is completely blank.
'Me and two others… I'll find out what meant later… what I must do now…' He pockets the card, putting it in his Extra Deck after sliding out Road Warrior. With determination, Yusei returns to Neo Domino City at the same speed he left it.
The Present…
Placido has transformed, merging with his D-Wheel. He releases a burst of energy from his body, causing the tumultuous storm to release magenta lightning bolts upon the city. The glass barrier shatters in his presence, buildings crumble from the wind pressure, and screams resound in the destruction.
Yusei gasps when the memory of Zero Reverse resurfaces. Desperate, he slams into Placido, shouting, "KNOCK IT OFF!"
"Very well. I was willing to duel you anyway." Placido looks back at more members of his Diablo army coming up the rear.
Sherry and Dark Glasses turn around to face the threat. They will have to leave this to Yusei.
Yusei Fudo: 4000
Placido: 4000
"My turn!" Placido begins the duel, drawing his card before summoning it. As Yusei expects, it is Wise Core. He also sets two cards, ending his turn.
'He plans to summon his Machine Emperor…' Yusei quickly deduces. Looking at his hand, he comes up with a plan.
Drawing for his turn, Yusei adds the card to his hand before revealing a different card. "If my opponent controls a monster and I don't, I can special summon this card as a level 4 monster. Come out, Level Warrior!"
He brings forth a red ranger with stars shining on his face.
Level Warrior: 300/600 (4)
"Next, I summon Jet Synchron!" His next monster is a jet engine turbine with a face.
Jet Synchron: 500/0 (1) Tuner
"I'll tune my level 4 Level Warrior with my level 1 Jet Synchron!"
Jet Synchron shouts out as it turns into a single ring, passing through Level Warrior. "Clustering wishes shall speed across the world; become the path the light shines upon – Synchro Summon!"
From the light of Synchro, a black and white machine warrior made out of a jet bursts onto the field. "Elevate, Jet Warrior!"
Jet Warrior: 2100/1200 (5)
"Jet Synchron's effect; when used as a Synchro Material, I can add one Junk monster to my hand." He pulls out Junk Converter. "Jet Warrior's effect; when Synchro Summoned, Jet Warrior can return one card you control to your hand. I'll target Wise Core!" Jet Warrior's turbine bursts the Synchro forward.
"No, you don't! Torrential Tribute activate!" Water shoots upward and washes the field clean, drowning out Wise Core and Jet Warrior.
As Yusei gripes the death of his plan, Placido laughs as his plan continues. Wise Core opens up, and out pops Machine Emperor Wisel Infinity, Wisel Top, Wisel Attack, Wisel Guard, and Wisel Carrier. Yusei narrows his eyes as the monster turns into its combined form.
Machine Emperor Wisel: 2500/2000 (1)
Yusei sets two cards and ends his turn.
"You're a fool to stand against destiny, Yusei Fudo."
"I stand against you, Yliaster!" Yusei says as he follows after.
"To fight us is to fight God. We are the chosen ones appointed to control the destiny of mankind for the better!"
"Like how you controlled Rudger into releasing Momentum?!" Yusei shouts angrily.
"That was your father's fault for creating Momentum in the first place, for giving humanity a power it didn't deserve!" Placido speeds ahead before drawing.
He immediately commands Wisel to attack, his monster turning around to strike Yusei with its left arm blade.
"Trap card open; Defense Draw!" Yusei draws a card, swiping the blade away to reduce all battle damage to zero.
Placido scuffs, realizing he should have seen that coming. He then ends his turn setting a card facedown. Yusei looks at his hand, thinking of what he needs to do. He draws for his turn, revealing his card as Quick Synchron. "By discarding one monster, I can special summon Quick Synchron. Come out!"
Quick returns to the field with his pistol ready. "Next, I summon Tuning Supporter!" He reveals his next card, the familiar helper for Tuning. "I'll now perform a Synchro Summon using my level 1 Tuning Supporter and my level 5 Quick Synchron!"
Quick draws his pistol and shoots a monster on a roulette, before turning into five rings. They pass by Tuning Supporter and turn it into a single star.
"Gathering stars shall weave a greater force! Become the path its light shines upon – Synchro Summon!" Arriving in light is the red engine warrior with the makeshift pompadour. The sound of revving takes off as steam blows from its engine pipes. "Roar your engines, Turbo Warrior!"
Turbo Warrior: 2500/2000 (6)
"Still relying on your faulty Synchro monsters?" Placido chastises as he mocks the Signer.
Ignoring him, Yusei says, "Tuning Supporter allows me to draw one card. Turbo Warrior, attack Wisel Top! Accel Slash!"
A red veil of energy shoots out from Turbo Warrior's hand thrust. Wisel Guard raises its arm to block the strike, shattering in the process. Placido cackles at feeling nothing.
"I'll set one card and end my turn." A single card forms behind Yusei as he concludes his turn.
Placido chuckles. "Yusei, do you know about bees?"
"Bees?"
"When bees move, they're doing so to communicate. They think it's of their volition, but instead, it is prescribed by destiny."
Annoyed, Yusei simply asks, "Is there a point to this?"
"Everything you do is a dance, one orchestrated by fate. By God. And we are the hands of God that control fate!" Placido draws for his turn. "I'll summon Wisel Guard 3!"
The upgraded arm appears, attaching itself to the machine's right socket to become its arm. "And now, Wisel Infinity's effect!"
Sadly, for Placido, nothing happens. Wisel doesn't even attempt to turn around. "Huh?"
"Turbo Warrior's effect; it cannot be targeted by monster effects whose levels are 6 or below," Yusei says with a smirk. "Since Wisel Infinity is a level 1 monster, it can't touch him."
Angered at Yusei's defiance and intellect, Placido glares at the boy. "You…"
"Sorry, but just like I said to Goodwin, I'm a lousy dancer."
"You little pest… you're nothing more than a bug!" Placido's energy radiation continues to surface through Wisel, causing the storm above to grow worse. Lightning strikes the ground throughout Neo Domino City, blackening the city with power outages.
It affects everywhere: the stadium where Crow and the others are, homes and residences, and even the hospital Aki is in. Speaking of whom, she proceeds to wake up, feeling and remembering what happened to her prior.
Back at the duel, a now calmer Placido chuckles. His mind calculates a means to get around him. So he says, "That's a good move. But you forget; Wisel can upgrade infinitely. That weak monster won't survive forever! I'll set one card and end my turn."
With that, Yusei begins his turn, sadly realizing that Placido is correct. Turbo Warrior isn't strong enough to end this duel, and he doesn't have Rush Warrior in his hand. He needs his best monster right now, Drago-Equiste.
"I will activate Level Stealer's effect; by reducing Turbo Warrior's level by one I can special summon it." He brings out an old favorite, the ladybug from his duel against the duel robot back at the factory. "Then, by releasing this monster, I special summon Jet Warrior from the graveyard."
Level Stealer returns to the grave, allowing the blue jet monster to return. "But, when this monster leaves the field, it will be banished." Yusei presses a button, causing his first trap card to flip over. "Angel Lift; this trap will revive Tuning Supporter."
As Tuning Supporter returns to the field, Yusei takes one more card, revealing and summoning it. Satellite Synchron. "I'll tune my level 5 Jet Warrior and level 1 Tuning Supporter with my level 2 Satellite Synchron!"
Satellite turns into two rings. The rings pass by the two monsters. "Clustering wishes shall become a new star! Become the path the light shines upon – Synchro Summon!"
Clustering stars form from the light of Synchro. "Take flight, Stardust Dragon!"
"Stardust Dragon?" Placido scuffs.
As Yusei draws, he gets a look at the card before smirking. "Here it is… I activate the Speed Spell – Speed Fusion!"
The counter shows 5, which is more than enough Speed Counters for his card to work. "If my Speed Counters are 4 or higher, I can perform a Fusion Summon!" Both of his monsters come together in the swirl of Fusion. "When the greater force merges with the shining star, the atmospheric knight shall descend – Fusion Summon!"
His ace merges with the engine warrior to become a brand new being, the dragon knight. "Come forth, Hadouryukishi – Drago-Equiste!"
Seeing it, Placido smirks in a ready tone. "I got you now…"
"You what?" Yusei flinches at that.
"Counter Trap – Machine Repentance!"
Placido's first trap card opens up, causing a hole to form overhead. Drago-Equiste is drawn in forcefully, crying out. "Drago-Equiste!"
"Machine Repentance; this trap card will activate when you summon a monster from the Extra Deck and then banish it, so long as you have a Synchro monster in your graveyard." The dragon knight disappears into the void, crumbling into pieces. As the pieces fall back to earth, they reform into the shape of Stardust Dragon in a defending position.
"What? Stardust?"
"It also allows me to revive a Synchro Monster if I want to with the condition that it can't activate its effects." Placido glares back at Yusei. "I told you; no matter what you do, it is moved by the hand of destiny."
'He knew I would summon Drago-Equiste and planned for it…' Yusei realizes, angry knowing that now he's lost both Drago-Equiste and Turbo Warrior. With only Stardust, he'll lose it by the next turn. Luckily, he has one card to use. It can protect Stardust, and give him time to set up plan B – Accel Synchro.
"I'll normal summon Biclar in defense mode." The two-wheeled motor monster appears. At that, his trap opens up. "Emerging Awakening activate."
Stardust Dragon turns into glittering stardust that forms eight stars. "When I normal summon a monster, I can banish one Synchro monster I control, and deal damage to you equal to its level times 100."
Placido gets bombarded by eight blasts of energy.
Placido: 3200
"And, by my next Standby Phase, I can return it to the field." Yusei then proceeds to end his turn by setting one card facedown.
Annoyed by Yusei's persistence, Placido drives further. "It's time to show you the true power of Wisel Infinity."
He draws for his turn, immediately activating his trap card. "Bomb Blast activate! By destroying Wisel Carrier, I can deal 400 damage!"
The legs explode, causing Yusei to shake in his bike. He slams into the side before correcting himself.
Yusei: 3600
"And, I summon Skiel Carrier 3!" As he summons his next card, Yusei flinches at the name. Appearing now is a blue metal bug. It unfolds and becomes wing legs for Wisel.
Wisel: 2300
"And, I'll replace Skiel Carrier 3 with Skiel Carrier 5!" The blue bug disappears, replaced with a nearly identical bug that turns into wing legs with boosters.
Wisel: 2500
"Battle! Wisel Infinity, attack Biclar!" The machine monster slashes at Biclar, turning it into scraps. "Skiel Carrier 5; you take 300 damage when Wisel destroys your monster by battle."
A wingbeat of green energy batters Yusei, causing him to swerve.
Yusei: 3300
"Biclar's effect…" He looks at the smoke cloud of Biclar's destruction and sees Uncyclar.
"I'll set one card and end my turn." Wisel turns around following its master as he cackles.
Yusei grinds his teeth as he corrects himself. With his turn beginning, he draws his card and adds it to his hand, before Stardust returns to the field. It gains a power boost of 800, bringing the dragon to 3300. That alone would be enough to defeat Wisel if it wasn't protected by that shield arm.
"I will discard one card and special summon Jet Synchron from the graveyard." His red and white Synchron reappears on the field, and he immediately tunes it with his level 1 monster. As the single ring passes, Yusei chants. "Collecting wishes will call out a new horizon of speed! Become the path its light shines upon! Synchro Summon!"
Yusei's brand new monster, one he has been preparing for this very moment, rides onto the scene alongside Yusei. It's a Synchron monster with a formula theme this time. "The power of hope, Synchro Tuner – Formula Synchron!"
Formula Synchron: 200/1500 (2) Tuner
"A Synchro Tuner?" Placido looks at it, eyes widening when he realizes what his next plan is. Does he plan on performing something he never saw?
"Formula Synchron's effect; upon Synchro Summon, I can draw one card." He draws from the effect.
As Yusei moves forward, passing by Placido, the latter angrily declares, "Pathetic! You can't defeat me without Synchro, can you? All this will do is repeat the cycle of mistakes and create a foolish history!"
"You're wrong!" Yusei shouts before he speeds up. His D-Wheel radiates power around its nose, and Yusei's eyes brim with clarity. Placido follows, igniting his engines to keep up.
"You won't change anything Yusei Fudo!" Lightning pours from the skies like rain, slapping the city with damage upon damage.
"I'll tune my level 8 Stardust Dragon with my level 2 Synchro Tuner Formula Synchron!" Formula Synchron jets forward as Stardust follows.
"The Synchro Summon you're attempting is more proof of humanity's foolish desire to evolve! And just what has that wrought?! Or have you forgotten the tragedy of Zero Reverse!?"
Yusei's mind is broken for a split second, remembering the horrific event that he always blamed himself for. Shaking his head off those thoughts to retain his clear thoughts, he presses onward at a higher speed. Formula Synchron transforms into two Synchro Rings, which merge into a single ring. Energy spills from the slipstream of Momentum conjured by Yusei's heart, crystallizing upon Stardust Dragon.
Seeing he's pulling it off, Placido gives one last push at his heart. "ARE YOU TRYING TO FOLLOW IN THE SAME CURSED FATE THAT BEFELL YOUR FATHER?!"
At that, the clarity in Yusei's heart is replaced with uncertainty and fear. In denial, he screams, "ACCEL SYNCHRO!"
But…
It fails.
The energy that would have transformed Stardust shatters, reforging into Formula Synchron. 'What?!'
Having witnessed these events, Sherry blinks in surprise. "What… what just happened?"
Dark Glasses widens his eyes in shock too.
Placido laughs. "I was wondering what kind of trick you were up to, but it was all a farce. Were you trying to use the card you received from the tablet?"
Yusei is in terror. Why did his Accel Synchro fail? His one remaining ace and it failed to even show up.
"It all goes to show you never deserved that power in the first place." Placido extends his hand, and more of the city is struck.
"KNOCK IT OFF! Stardust Dragon, attack Wisel Infinity!" Desperate, Yusei enters the Battle Phase, but Stardust's attack misses. The carrier boosts Wisel upward, narrowing and dodging the cosmic flare.
"Skiel Carrier 5's effect." Placido laughs at Yusei's desperate move.
As the boy ends his turn, Placido draws his card. "Wisel Infinite's effect; once per turn, it can absorb an opponent's Synchro Monster. Stardust is mine!"
Beams shoot out and entangle Stardust, absorbing the dragon into its body. Its essence forms around the blade arm. "I told you; you can never defeat the Machine Emperors, no matter what you Signers try!"
Sherry grits her teeth. "Why? Why didn't it work?"
Dark Glasses finally speaks up. "Clear Mind…" She looks at him as he speaks. "One of the requirements to performing an Accel Synchro is having a heart devoid of emotion. His words got to Yusei and broke his concentration, preventing him from arriving at Clear Mind. That caused the Accel Synchro to fail."
"Clear Mind?" Sherry repeats those words, following after the two.
Power explodes from the Machine Emperor Wisel, releasing a bright light for all of Neo Domino City to see. Many stop to bear witness to the event, as all of the Signers feel the pain of Yusei's frustration through their marks.
"I'm not done yet. Wise A-3 activate!" Placido's trap card opens up, causing Attack to be replaced with Attack 3 from his hand.
Wisel Infinity: 5400
Remembering what that card does, Yusei knows that with Formula's defenses, he'll lose. If he destroys Formula Synchron, he'll lose 3900 life points, plus an extra 300. Regardless, he will lose. Luckily…
"Wisel, attack Formula Synchron!" Wisel jets for the Synchron, just as Yusei activates D2 Shield. The machine emperor shoots the Stardust energy at the monster, turning it into scrap. The remains hit Yusei, causing him to cry out.
Yusei: 900
"And, you will take Skiel Carrier 5's effect." The legs release a shockwave that batters Yusei.
Yusei: 600
"D2 Shield's second effect lets me draw." Yusei draws his card, thinking of a plan. He can reattempt the Accel Synchro, but without either of his monsters, he won't be able to.
"Go ahead and keep dancing. You're getting better at it," Placido says with a grin. "I'll end my turn."
Yusei draws for his turn, seeing no way of victory in his hand. But, he might have something in his next draw. "I'll remove 7 Speed Counters to use Speed World 2's effect."
Dropping his counters down to 2, Yusei draws again. It gives him something to work with now. "I'll set one card and summon Necro Linker in defense mode." Yusei's newer monster appears. With that, he ends his turn.
'Knowing his deck entirely, that must be that card.' Placido begins his turn, activating his trap. "I activate Wise T3! I'll replace Wisel Top with Wisel Top 3."
A new Top monster appears, assembling onto Wisel as its new head by removing the previous one. Wisel's strength rises to 5500.
"You're dead, Yusei Fudo! Machine Emperor Wisel, attack!" The machine flies forward.
"Yusei!" Sherry shouts with worry.
"Trap card open; Scrap-Metal Scarecrow." Up appears ol' reliable for Yusei, the metal scarecrow.
"Wisel Top 3's effect; it negates a Magic or Trap card you activate once per turn!" A beam shoots out from the eyes, cleaving the scarecrow in two. Wisel continues to move forward, ready to destroy Necro Linker.
"Because you destroyed a card during the Battle Phase, I can discard the Arbitrator of Mediation and end the Battle Phase!" Wisel stops just before Necro Linker, before retreating.
"A two-layer defense… I'll end my turn."
Sherry sighs in relief seeing Yusei has survived another turn. Now he only needs to get back his monsters.
"I can do this… I just need that monster…" Yusei reaches down at his deck to draw, not noticing the brief glow his marks are making. 'Please, my cards… give me the means to retrieve Stardust…'
He makes his miracle draw, smiling at his prayers being answered. "I summon Rescue Warrior!"
A new monster with the appearance of a firefighter appears on the field. Yusei then commands it to attack Wisel Infinity.
"Why is he aiming at my monster?" Not bothering to use Wisel Guard or Skiel Carrier 5's effect, Placido watches as Rescue Warrior performs a kamikaze attack. Though, he is surprised to see that Yusei's life has not dropped.
"A monster effect that negates Battle Damage, huh? Then, take this! Skiel Carrier 5's effect!" The legs release a shockwave that assaults Yusei.
Yusei: 300
"Rescue Warrior's effect; I can take control of a monster you control, whether it's a monster or an equipped card." That effect surprises and angers Placido, as Stardust Dragon breaks free of Wisel's chest.
It returns to Yusei's field in glittering triumph. Sherry and Dark Glasses smile seeing Yusei has retrieved his ace monster. "Next, Necro Linker's effect; I will release this card and special summon a Tuner from my graveyard. I choose to revive Formula Synchron!"
The miracle tuner returns in place of Necro Linker, returning to Yusei the conditions needed for his Accel Synchro. "But, I cannot perform a Synchro Summon this turn. So I end my turn."
Seeing Yusei end his turn, Placido scuffs. "So after all of that, you couldn't do anything. You're back the way you were four turns ago." Staring at the boy, he angrily shouts, "It's about time you realized your powerlessness for your own good!"
Wisel's power radiates once again. This time, it causes a tornado to blow throughout the city, with itself at the center. The storm swallows up the two duelists, trapping them in their own little world. It throws the city into further chaos and even forces back Sherry and Dark Glasses.
"Yusei! You will fall to the power of God bestowed upon us! It's my turn now!" Placido draws his card, staring at the foolish Signer below him. "Wisel Infinity's effect; once per turn, I can absorb one Synchro Monster you control! Stardust will be mine this time!"
Wisel Infinity shoots out energy beams to ensnare the dragon once again. Yusei narrows his eyes and drives faster, doing all he can to get Stardust away from the Machine Emperor.
This is his final comeback.
"I won't let Stardust be taken!"
Energy collects around his D-Wheel once more. Yusei narrows his eyes, which slowly open with clarity. As the speed of the wind elevates his soul, he feels it again. The cleansing of light, the silence in his heart, the wind behind him; his soul has become so quiet, a drop of water resounds.
"CLEAR MIND!" Yusei thrusts his hand out to the side. "I'll tune my level 8 Stardust Dragon with my level 2 Synchro Tuner Formula Synchron!" Formula Synchron turns into rings, reenacting the requirements that he tried five turns ago.
"A Synchro Summon on my turn?!" Wisel's tendrils reach for Stardust, but all fail to reach through the speed.
Energy crystallizes upon the dragon. It evolves through the power of Momentum and speed. "Clustering dreams will crystallize to open the door to a new evolution! Become the path the Light shines upon!"
Yusei's speed reaches a new level, moving so fast that Placido can barely see him. He even accelerates to try and catch up.
"ACCEL SYNCHRO!" Yusei pulls out the card from the tablet, and a white dragon forms on it. As soon as he does, the Yusei Go and the Synchro Monsters all blink out of existence.
"He… he disappeared?!" Placido looks around for Yusei, before turning behind him. He spots something appearing into existence, the Yusei Go and its rider. With it, a new monster behind Yusei takes to the skies.
"ARISE, SHOOTING STAR DRAGON!"
Lightz: We now conclude the Placido Diablo arc with the next chapter, including the final turn and the meeting of the emperors. Before that chapter ends, you will also see what has transpired across the city while Yusei has been doing his thing.
Especially with Aki. That's important.
