This short story is a spin-off of WCTH. The characters are in modern day. What if Rosie & Lee met in this time period? Here's a little love story about them! My fav couple on the show! :)
Rosie Levolt stood at her now empty bulletin board. What was once filled up with grand ideas and possible scoops currently faced her: blank. She sighed a frustrated sigh and muttered, "Oh, sassafras!", something she recalled her grandmother yelling when things were snowballing. She crumpled up scribbles she had written down on sheets of her lined notebook paper and tossed them in the trash. Now what, Rosie thought. She was about to drown her disappointment in her secret stash of chocolate chip ice cream she stored in her office's mini freezer when her old-fashioned phone rang. She bought it at an antiques auction a couple hours away from the small town of Hopedale, Washington she decided to call home for a few years now.
Rosie picked up the black handset and answered. "Hello. Hopedale News. Rosie speaking." "Hey, Rosie. It's me. Doesn't it get a little old answering the phone like that?" It was her best friend Lizzy. "Hi, Lizzy. You know it doesn't for me. This is my pride and joy. Besides, it's not always you on the other end." Lizzy laughed, "Well, most of the time. Let's face it, we've usually got some tea to spill." "Very true. So, how was class today?" "Wonderful. We were learning about the planets." Lizzy certainly keeps busy as an elementary school teacher to first graders. It's her true calling, that's for sure, but extremely tiring at times. "Oh how fun for the kids. Was everyone pretty well behaved this time?" "Most everyone. Billy started bringing in the baby frogs from recess again," Lizzy giggled. "Again? Oh my goodness! That's what - the third time this week?" "Something like that," Lizzy added.
Rosie let out a deep exhale. "Is everything alright? Still stuck finding a story?" Lizzy always knew when something was bothering her. "Yes. I'll figure it out. Eventually," Rosie replied, taking a sip of her ice water. "Hang in there." Lizzy truly gets Rosie like no one else. She's like the sister she always hoped for. A gal pal like no other. "Thanks, Lizzy. You sure know how to lighten my spirits." "Of course. What are best friends for?" Rosie smiled at that. "And since I'm such a great friend..." Lizzy trailed off. "Yes?" Rosie questioned. Lizzy went on, "Well, Nate's friend just moved here. Remember the guy I was telling you about who just got elected for mayor?" "Yeah. He seems like a worthy man for the job. Go on," Rosie waved her hand in front of her, wondering what Lizzy was about to say. "Yeah, so it turns out we're meeting for dinner tonight at the hotel and..." Rosie could finish the sentence for her. "You want me to join so I can meet him, right?" "Only if you want to. I've only met him a couple times and he's very sweet. Nate's been friends with him since he hired his contracting company to install those new cabinets." "Right, right. What's our new mayor and Nate's friend's name again?" Rosie asked, feeling the answer on the tip of her tongue. Lizzy only mentioned him a few times and she couldn't remember all of the sudden. "Lee. Lee Culler." "That's right," Rosie snapped her fingers. "Just Lee? It's not short for anything?" "I'm not sure. We can ask him at dinner. So, are you up for it? You may hit it off with him," Lizzy giggled a little. "Why not? I'd love to join. He sounds pretty charming." "You'll be sweethearts in no time." "Lizzy! Since when did you start becoming such a matchmaker?" Rosie shook her head amusingly. "Since I've started becoming serious with Nate. He really is my Mr. Right. So caring, honest, thoughtful, protective, oh and the fact that he's a handsome police officer doesn't hurt either." Rosie could practically see Lizzy's cheeks blushing over the phone. "Okay I'll see you two lovebirds tonight at..." "The reservation's at six," Lizzy answered. "Perfect. See you then. Bye, Liz!" "Bye!" Rosie set down the telephone and wrote in her calendar. Nate and Lizzy had been dating for almost half a year. If he popped the question soon, Rosie wouldn't be surprised. The couple has been speeding things up lately.
