What's merely an escapism of a fantasy transformed into an entirely different world. The sky is visible and real nature surrounded them, but the world wrought in conquest and genocide is still a far better choice than the dystopic Japan. The stench of charred soil, exposed flesh, and acidic steam fills the air, but the devil's heart pumps wildly that her senses are amplified and erratic.
"It's alright. Everything's going to be alright. Nothing and no one will ever hurt you as long as I'm here"
Guts, organs, blood, and flayed skin surround the land, feeding the once healthy brown soil with the sticky red blood and nourishing the plants with minced body parts. The devil clad in black armor gently embraces Nellian who's trembling and sniffling in her cold metallic plate protecting her chest. The younger half devil tightly clings to the devil, ignoring the sour and bitter scent of the sticky blood and chunks of flesh on the black armor.
"Mom...mom...don't leave me..." The younger half devil whimpers
"I'm never going to abandon you. The bastard is dead. I made sure of it"
Shirogane wants to wipe the half devil's tears away, but her silver cape covering her right shoulder is nearly dyed completely with splattered blood and other fluids after hacking and severing the man several times. A sword is a weapon for slashing and stabbing, but her vision had gone red that she bludgeoned the other player with the pommel. Her gauntlet has sharp edges and claw-like points at the end of her fingertips, fearing it might injure the girl instead of comforting her
(Margaret at Nellian are strong and appear older now, but they're still mentally and emotionally children. They don't know how to face actual danger or the thought of killing)
In Shirogane's mind, she doesn't blame the two half devils since they have the mental capacity of their human lives even if their bodies are at least adolescent in appearance. Shirogane herself hasn't harmed or thought of harming anyone as a human, but as an adult in a youthful devil's body, she took the burden of staining her hands and facing the horrors of a one-sided war.
"Where are we?" Margaret scams the surroundings
"I don't know yet, but we're not the only ones who arrived here" Shirogane grunts at the mutilated corpse
"I-I don't like this" Nellian continues to cling to Shirogane
"I know it's scary. That's why until we know what's going on and where we are, the two of you mustn't stray away from my side"
There's fear coiling in the devil's heart. The fear of getting killed herself, seeing the two girls die, and the unknown are inescapable. In the game, her avatar excels in sustaining bombardments and dealing burst damage against players equal to her level, so she's primarily nervous on how strong her current body is in an actual setting and another world.
(Even though I killed someone mercilessly over and over again, I felt ecstatic and empty at the same time. In the game, devils are cruel and selfish beings by nature - Have I become my own character? If so, I don't want them to be like me. They're both half devils, so they can still retain their humanity) Shirogane quietly glances at Margaret hugging Nellian
Shirogane blankly stares at the mangled and disemboweled corpse of what was once a player and gently presses her chest. It's in thousands of pieces scattered in the charred field that resurrection is impossible. Her heart doesn't stir the slightest at the sight of gore as if it had always been natural to her. Even in her new form, her protective instinct remains strong towards the girls she treats as her own children.
"..."
She stares at the soft and flattened intestine lined up by the darkened soil, the stomach and liver squashed with fluids lightly leaking to the ground, and the only intact eye infested by flies lifelessly stares at the head split in half by Shirogane earlier. There isn't the slight remnant of disgust and fear even when she slowly approaches the splatted brain matter mixed with the bits of a crushed skull and the tongue loosely hanging from the lower jaw she ripped off with her bare hands earlier.
"How dare you molest my daughter. Death is too good for you, fucking piece of shit!" Shirogane emits an aura of frost around her and beneath her feet
Shirogane's heart is still burning with anger that she lifts her right foot and stomps the head, spilling pus, blood, and transparent fluid beneath her feet. She's in the worst mood she has ever been in, especially after witnessing another player fondles Nellian's breast and caress her thighs. She crashed the ground like a fiery meteor in two seconds after the terrified child desperately calls out to her.
"From an enslaved office worker to an evil black paladin...isn't how I imagined living in my thirties. Well, that wouldn't matter now since my body might not age for millennia if we're going by the usual rules"
Shirogane squeezes her hands and gently presses her soft and wrinkle-free cheeks, still bewildered and intrigued by her younger and healthier devil body. She gently rubs her horns until the sharp tip and even tests the mobility of her jagged metallic onyx tail with a cross spear-like tip by wagging, slightly bothered by the drastic additional features in her body. The sisters themselves aren't much different but their horns are shorter than Shirogane and their eyes are no different from a human.
...
Once again, Shirogane's mind drifts off somewhere, but this time it's due to sensing a presence that she couldn't determine if it's from her or from somewhere. All she can confirm is the familiar sensation of her current surroundings.
"The throne..."
The devil lazily opens her eyes for a moment and blinks several times when her sight is greeted by the familiar spacious area of her throne room decorated by gold lined fabric and, precious metals embedded in the walls and columns, and the red carpet lining from her throne until near to the large thick door with a serpent and wolf engraved on each side.
(I'm here sitting commanding and ruling over others. I can do whatever I want, eat real luxurious food, and all the privileges of a real queen - that is if I'm a real queen. I was just roleplaying in Yggdrasil, but I didn't think it would all become real. I lost my humanity as soon as my game avatar became my real body, but it didn't worry me at all. Being unable to feel remorse and see humans as my playthings - is this as a blessing or a curse?)
Shirogane sadly questions her current life, worried that her servants won't both understand and her image as a devil ruler will be questioned. She doesn't believe she's fit to be a ruler, but everyone in the castle depend on her like clingy children. They're all crrated by her, so Shirogane at least believes it's her responsibility to watch over them and ensure everyone's happiness.
(My parents are gone and my little sister died somewhere without telling me. I created these NPCs, so I suppose they're like a makeshift family. Only if they can tone down the fanatic worshipping and undying loyalty. I'm just a hard-to-kill devil and not some deity who can grant blessings-)
The moment she thinks of deities and how they're portrayed as granting blessings to worhsippers, she feels her entire body mildly jolt and a chill crawling down her back. For a few seconds, her senses shift to an bleak and icy world with a pale hand on top of her right shoulder.
"Your majesty..." Her faithful butler softly calls her
"This isn't good. A ruler shouldn't be seen sleeping on a throne" Shirogane pushes herself up from the throne
"Forgive us! We couldn't fulfill your orders as swiftly as you expected us!" Nehemoth bites his lower lip
"That's not-"
Shirogane couldn't explain how the second she stands up, her back slightly aches from the discomfort of taking a nap while sitting on a metallic throne. Even her rear is sore after an hour or two of pressing against the cold steel.
(This is really my life now. It felt like not too long ago, I was just a salary worker living on artificial food and underpaid overtimes everyday...but now I'm a queen of an entire castle with sentient NPCs worshipping me like a goddess and serving with fanatical loyalty)
Without a doubt, Nehemoth is hardworking but overthinking due to him and everyone living to high standards that Shirogane isn't even asking. She takes a deep breath and inhales the fresh scent of a result freshly cleaned carpet and wiped floors.
"..."
In fact, she raises her head and stares at the ceiling where imps are thoroughly cleaning each corner and side, ensuring there isn't a speck of dust or cobweb present.
"After so long, I'm still not used to being my own boss..."
Shirogane mutters to herself when she turns her attention to Nehemoth who's still kneeling with his head lowered out of unnecessary "shame". The stoic and analytical devil butler who devotes all his strength to his queen is a backstory Shirogane mildly regrets.
"Nehemoth, what do you see in me? How do you see me?"
"..." Nehemoth swallows his breath
Shirogane steps away from the throne and looms over the kneeling butler, unintentionally emitting pressure that's making Behemoth's heart race and sweet to drop from his cheek down to his chin. He envisions a faint black mist surrounding his mistress and her stern scarlet eyes glinting brightly and gazing down at him with utter disappointment. In reality, Shirogane is somewhat curious and anxious about her creation's sentience and personality.
"You are my queen, the only one whom I will devote everything to until I die. I take it with great pride and honor to be your personal attendant, and so I pour all my efforts to live up to your expectations" Nehemoth musters his strength to keep his voice from trembling
(Isn't that a bit too much?! I was just a former office lady. Why do you think so highly of me? I just want to have a peaceful life and retire but I can't abandon my own creations!)
It's fortunate that Nehemoth is too ashamed to raise his head since Shirogane herself is trembling with pressure from her butler exaggerating his answer. To Nehemoth, it's the truth from his heart and would further describe his thoughts if allowed.
"Nehemoth, what I wish is to create a home for my daughters and everyone here. I wish to create a place where everyone has no fear of being hunted down or hate for being turned away. That's right - I wish those who serve me to prosper and live equally"
Shirogane walks past the nervous butler and gently spreads her arms on both sides, sorrowfully declaring her only wish to Nehemoth and the other monsters present in the throne room.
(To begin with, I only saw this entire thing as an escape and solace from cruel reality. That's why I embraced my role whenever I'm in the game...but this isn't the game anymore. The home I dreamt off became real and I was given a new life thanks to this devilish body and strength. I'm free from that hell as a slave for corrupt bosses. What I thought was a form of escape is now a report and so I must ensure my new home prospers and doesn't oppress those who serve me)
Shirogane has no grand ambitions and she's well aware of her own wish from the bottom of her heart. It's a gentle wish to create and protect what she can call her own home now, but she speaks out only in her mind believing such a wish is unfit for a Demon Lord.
(...Still, can a real home be forged in bloodshed? I killed fellow players and the natives here when they threatened to hurt my people and I. Even as I decimated a human army and personally ripped someone in half...I didn't feel the slightest guilt. It felt too natural and normal for me when I would have been traumatized as a human...)
Shirogane twists and turns back to stare at the empty throne reserved for her. One maid is thoroughly wiping the metallic areas, ensuring not a speck of dust tarnishes the symbol of authority while another maid is brushing off the seat, also ensuring no dirt sticks to where Shirogane sits.
(Well, I will hesitate to hurt children, but...)
The boy from the other day comes to mind. She would usually leave and leave a child to a gruesome fate but her promise to uphold justice weighs heavier than her nature. Shirogane shakes her head when the feeling of conflict tightens in her heart.
"Your majesty?" Nehemoth stands up and notices his mistress spacing out
"I was thinking how much I changed. I never thought of hurting anyone and prefer not to, but five hundred years ago...I slaughtered countless people when they threatened us. Why didn't I hate myself for it? In fact, I quite enjoyed how they struggled after they proudly declared they would slaughter my subordinates. Instead I got furious and I snapped when Nellian was in danger. I froze an entire city - sorry, I talked too much" Shirogane clears her throat
"A queen such as yourself has no need to apologize! As your personal servant, it's my duty to lend my ears and all my senses" Nehemoth kneels again
(Even if Nehemoth's setting is to be an intelligent and faithful butler, he and the others overestimate me. I can't just tell him how I must have a goal with all this power. If my daughters are still alive, I can at least make a home for us once I find them. Everyone here can prosper for millennia if I were to die one day)
Her longtime goal is to create a home for everyone under her and ensures they can sustain themselves even if she's no longer the ruler. A part of her wishes to leave the castle and live her own life in the countryside, but she could never abandon her people. To a ruler, there are two problems she must face for assurance.
"...My only problem is having a successor" Shirogane unknowingly speaks her thoughts out loud
"Are you planning to have a child, my queen? If that is the case, we will gladly welcome any partner of your choosing"
"Heh?"
"Even if your partner is a human, any offspring from your bloodline is your heir and we will gladly pledge our eternal loyalty to them!"
(It's true I can have children because I have both a female and male form, but marriage is still far from my mind! Also, how do half demon babies even work?!)
Both Shirogane's current body and former human body are females physically and mentally speaking, but the thought of starting a family is making her more anxious than ever. If anything, Nehemoth is visibly welcoming with whatever his queen wishes. The demon butler, blinded by sheer excitement of taking care of a future prince or princess, has him blinded on Shirogane twitching the side of her lips and nervously laughing.
(My type of man is someone with principle and has the capability to defend his ideals. Maybe if someone like Gazef or Touch-san but the same age as me. I may still have the mind of a thirty year old woman, but I'm stuck looking in early twenties! I just want to marry a man who's faithful to his ideals but not blind to reality!)
Shirogane admires those similar with Touch Me's personality but her prime form consciously prefers husbands to be neither younger nor older than her...appearance-wise that is. Being five hundred years old is still young by demon standards, but any humanoid species will see her as an old hag.
"...I wonder if there are even strong humans in this world" Shirogane starts considering a partner
"I am not certain but the Slane Theocracy appears to gather the most skilled humans, but they are a country of human supremacists. If rumors are correct, the Captain of the Black Scripture is said to be one of their most skilled warriors. At least, that's what Sariel's Seven Days gathered" Nehemoth bows
"A heteromorph hating man, I presume. As long as he's competent and entertaining enough, I can ignore the horrible personality. If I were to conceive a half devil from my bloodline, how would everyone see it?"
"...!"
Shirogane only wants Nehemoth's true opinions and without restraint from her authority, but the butler swallows his breath when he imagines his queen emitting black mist and an unseen force coiling around his neck and chest.
"This is my only opinion, but everyone will accept any partner the queen wishes. Even if a half devil was fathered by a human, we will pledge our eternal loyalty, but..."
"...But"
"As your butler, I wish to serve you eternally. I cannot say for the others due to their personalities" Nehemoth speaks the truth
"If that captain is indeed stronger than any humans here but doesn't wish to father a child with a devil, then consent is out of the question"
If anything, Shirogane personally believes in consent and force as a last resort despite her negative two hundred karma rating. A devil believing in consent first before bed carnal desires makes her fear of her image as a devil and status as a ruler be questioned by the other evil residents of the castle. She doesn't realize how to everyone, her word is law and they would happily accept everything she believes as wisdom. It's not obvious to others...or to herself, but her mind will overthink and unknowingly take precautions.
Four hours later...
One of the level one hundred NPCs directly reporting to their queen, Dynas Aschwalt, cheerfully whistles as he returns to the castle. He's properly called one of the Custodians, the strongest generals and a Warden of their assigned domains within the castle. In the game, it's merely a section of the castle one must go forcibly through before reaching the throne room, the area where the former raid boss awaits them.
"Man, I'm kind of worried. I wonder if that fox bitch is doing her job properly. I hope she hadn't torn off that noble's dick"
The dark elf assassin with silver slicked back wavy hair, a usually laid-back expression, and rather cheerful tone whistles longly while he makes his way to main halls of the castle that might as well be an indoor city.
"Hey there, Lucy, have you seen her majesty? The gardener said she was just at the courtyard a few minutes ago?" Dynas immediately stops and waves at one of the maids dusting off the corners of the walls.
"Good day, Dynas-sama. I believe the queen is enjoying the plaything Hraesvalgr-sama offered to cheer her up" The succubus maid bows down and softly replies
"Plaything from the talkative bird brain? Ah, must be one of those snacks he picked in some random rich dude's house. Why is her majesty down? Who the hell upset her?"
At first, Dynas keeps his default friendly and cheerful tone, but his voice immediately becomes deep and informal when he asks lastly.
"F-forgive me! I have knowledge of it, b-but Nehemoth-sama must know"
The maid's teeth chatter and she's one step away from bursting in tears out of shame and fear. Every being in the castle is well are the Custodians are not only guards to the demon lord but holds the highest authority among all servants. More importantly, Dynas is known to be ruthless and efficient - typically someone who will slit anyone's head off the second Shirogane orders him. The succubus maid is afraid to even meet his gaze the slightest that she couldn't force herself to raise her head even when he's right in front of her.
"Sorry I got worked up. I thought one of the Custodians was slacking off and Shirogane-sama is bored or disappointed at the lack of progress. Good grief. If that was the case, I bet it's Akane's fault or maybe Sariel"
Dynas casually waves goodbye and mutters to himself while he walks away, ignoring how the maid's legs are still trembling from the killing intent she believed to be directed to her. It's only after his voice fades away that the maid's legs finally give out to the ground while silently whimpering at a near death experience over a simple question.
"Hmm?"
The dark elf rubs his smooth chin when he spots the demon butler leaving a room and gently closing the door behind him that it doesn't make the slightest sound upon shutting.
"Nehemoth-"
"If you're looking for her majesty, she's inside, but busy after...a brief test"
"Good grief. You may be smart as hell, but you got to lighten up"
"Be certain that it's urgent. Shirogane-sama won't tolerate anyone bothering her for useless issues" Nehemoth's crimson eyes briefly glow
"I assure you, it's not. No one would ever bother our queen with something stupid. I'd cut out their tongues first"
"Hmph. Make it quick"
The butler quickly walks past Dynas who clicks his tongue due to the natural dislike to his bossy personality just because he has the privilege of being the de facto assistant. The Custodians are aware of how their appearances, abilities, and personalities are set by Shirogane, so they take great pride in it and couldn't hate the others with personalities opposing to them.
"My queen, I've returned from the kingdom" Dynas knocks three times
"You may enter"
"As you wish" Dynass takes a deep breath
He's momentarily nervous, formulating concise and precise words in order not to spill out nonsense or any useless information. As the assassin among the Custodians, he's in charge of the monsters specializing in information gathering, stealth, and assassinations. He wastes as little as possible to prevent any setbacks or complicate his missions, fearing it would disappoint his mistress.
"..." Dynas blinks several times in surprise
A white cat with curly and fluffy fur playfully pokes Shirogane's cross spear-like tail while she flicks it up and down as a makeshift toy for the cat. As for the demon lord herself, she busies herself by reading books regarding the Slane Theocracy and Baharuth Empire. Everything looks normal except for the barely touched unusually juicy and thick steak on the coffee table. It doesn't emit the same aroma as beef or pork.
"Is that a cat, your majesty?" Dynas rubs his eyes
"I went out for a walk a bit when I found this big monstrous cat who tried to eat me, but I slapped it turned small. It jumped to my cape and refused to let go, so I adopted it"
"You shouldn't have gone out without a guard, your majesty"
"I strolled the forest, and the werewolves told me of a rumor that an enormous feline with sharp teeth and horns prowled a nearby area. I went to check it and found this cat eating ogres. Unfortunately for him, he broke his teeth trying to bite me so I gently slapped it, but he went flying"
Shirogane mildly chuckles, recalling how the enormous monstrous feline with thick fur and razor-sharp teeth is no different from either a toy from its lightness. The slap she delivered is enough to wipe the air in front of her, but the creature was sent off its four feet and rolls in the air before crashing to up to two trees.
"I almost forgot. The is a bit fatty and secretes excess oil when I cut it. I prefer those with average build and full of youth" Shirogane snaps her fingers
Shirogane presses the steak with a fork and oil spreads from beneath the meat, causing Shirogane to twitch the side of her lip, revealing her fang.
"I'll inform the chef of your preferences" Dynas nods
"I wonder if someone like Lakyus tastes better. I haven't tasted a maiden for a while"
Shirogane thinks of both ways and haven't decided which kind she prefer. The cat bit the tip of Shirogane's tail, unaware that it's sharp enough to stab someone or deliver a deep wound. With a teasing smile, Shirogane lifts her tail along with the cat refusing to let go. The normal feline flails its legs but stubbornly keeps it bite on the metallic tail.
"The leader of the Blue Roses? Is she to your liking, your majesty? Isn't she far weaker than you since even though she couldn't sense you're a devil a disguise a few days ago" Dynas scratches his cheek
"There are only few people who can use resurrection spells in this world. Only Lakyus can do so in the kingdom. She's young but already a promising priestess wielding the sword of a former hero"
"Oh, that's indeed a fine specimen, but since those who can resurrect are very few, I doubt they can use high tier ones, your majesty" Dynas rubs his silver earring
"Other than that, I think she'd make a good toy. To a devil, someone untouched only makes you motivated to defile them from head to toe"
The way Shirogane faintly smiles while restraining her excitement from turning it into grin is a reminder that while she's fond of keeping animals as pets, she views the same on some humans. She will only view those weaker than her as equals if she shows even an ounce of respect.
"What happened to Blue Roses searching for the so-called demon lair?"
"They have yet to find it as we used defensive measures to ensure they will never find Eljudnir while keeping them unharmed as ordered"
"They will find it soon anyway. I assigned Qliphoth with preparations on when to deactivate the concealment"
"How about the vampire you found irritating at first glance?"
"She's a true vampire and magic caster at that. Akane sees her as a mosquito and wants to burn her, but I want to observe her a bit. Among the Blue Roses, she was the only one on guard against me and keeping an eye on me, so her instincts are remarkable by human standards"
Shirogane chuckles, recalling how she can sense Evileye is uneasy staring at her behind the white mask with black lines. She sharpened her intuition and instinct through battles in the past as a paladin like her not only relies on her extreme durability and smiting people to oblivion but also alertness due to lacking speed and agility. It's the common drawback of her class. While highly resistant to status effects and debuffs, she lacks the agility to avoid the likes of rogues and rangers.
"Anyhow, what is it you want to report to me? You've returned from the kingdom and empire, correct?" Shirogane reverts to her base form
"Y-yes!" Dynas clears his throat
"What happened?"
"My men reached out to anything unusual outside the kingdom, and to our surprise, we found something worth your attention from the Baharuth Empire"
"The Empire? I've heard while the Emperor purged the nobles of their power, his country is actually thriving. Emperor Jircniv is said to be ruthless but highly intelligent with a well-known sage at his side" Shirogane briefly recalls
"One of the Imperial Knights, Leina Rockbruise was sent on a mission after two squads have been wiped out on two separate occasions by hostile Demi-humans. Before the demi-human village can be burned down...a winged serpent clouded in storms appeared out of nowhere and electrocuted the knights. Some of the details are still left out but the knights stated they witnessed a wandering female magic caster with the elemental as its familiar and accompanied by a warrior...wielding a golden lance"
"An Elder Tempest so it might be...Margaret, Nellian"
Elder Tempests are storm elementals and one of the most dangerous magical beasts due to its destructive power. It's as large as the storms in conjure and swirls much like typhoon, appearing as if its disaster incarnate. They are not listed among known magical beasts in the New World, especially one that's gargantuan in size.
Shirogane immediately stands up and is shocked yet also brightly smiling as she's filled with hope again. Her devilish nature subsides out of the intense joy and hope shaking every inch of her body.
"Forgive me, your majesty, I cannot verify much to this encounter as the emperor prevented it leaking to the public. We confirmed the Demi-humans were saved and travelled elsewhere to build a new home. The two who saved them quickly disappeared when the Elder Tempest nearly fried everything in its vicinity"
"Have you found anything else?"
"Rumors spread among the empire soldiers of magic they haven't seen before, and they were said to be amazed by the lance emitting blue flames and red lightning. There's no solid evidence, but it might be Margaret-sama's lance you gifted to her. I only briefly recall you training her with it at my assigned area"
The section he guards is ruin that's almost like a maze, suitable forcing players to utilize any detection spells and defensive skills as much as possible.
"Further dig deeper into the Empire to confirm this but focus on secrecy as much as possible. I only need to confirm if it's my daughters, so I recommend not to target the emperor. I need the whereabouts of these demi-humans. If I can speak with them, then I can know if it's my daughters"
"We will pour all our efforts, Shirogane-sama. Until your daughters are found, we will not stop" Dynas kneels and firmly vows
"There's finally a clue after all this time..."
The sheer excitement brightens the glow of Shirogane's scarlet eyes and sharpens a glint. Her smile displays the sharp canine teeth leaning to monstrous than humanoid. Her excitement can be easily mistaken for bloodlust from the slight increase in intensity.
Somewhere in the Great Forest of Tob...
A group of werewolves rests for the time being while the rest of the pack are surveying the forest to prevent intruders or lost people from getting near Eljudnir. The castle itself has powerful concealment ability to avoid Scrying or ranger's sharp senses, but it will be visible the moment someone steps into the intangible barrier.
"Chief Garmr said some goblins and hobglins wished for the Demon Lord's protection after we got rid of those annoying humans the other day" Solas, a black-haired werewolf with a scar across his forehead, straightens his ears
"Her majesty has to approve at it first, but - Ha! Good luck pleasing our queen first. They're just some goblins who couldn't protect themselves so they're cowering with someone stronger" Ranu, a brown werewolf with with white fur on his chin down to his torso, laughs
"There were also some dryads and treants that Lord Nidhogg saved from humans burning their trees to flush them out and wished for the queen's protection as well" Solas grins
"Our queen's decree is anyone must have a place or can at least do something helpful. She doesn't accept freeloaders unless they gain her favor" Gin, a silver werewolf, cuts in
The three werewolves are busy preparing the group's meal with Solas chopping meat, Ranu heating up the pot, and Gin cutting vegetables and preparing spices.
"Have you guys noticed how Chief Garmr has been down recently?"
Another werewolf, carrying chopped wood to finish building their outpost, cuts into their conversation. It happens to be Tequila, another black werewolf with white fur on his feet and hands, making it appear he's wearing a suit.
"Chief wants to get praise from her majesty and even dare think of a head pat but he hasn't accomplished anything grand lately" Solas scratches his cheek
"What are you hairballs doing?"
"Gah!"
The four werewolves jumped back. Tequila raises his hands up but sends the wood flying back and Solas also sends the butcher's knife flying to a tree. The vampire swordswoman and one of the Custodians, visits them without invitation.
"Lady Akane! We were just preparing our food since the Chief said we can rest until our turn" Solas takes a deep breath and calmly replies
"He's still patrolling, huh. He better not be licking random mushrooms to test if they're poison or not"
"By the way, what brings you to our spot, Lady Akane? Chief Garmr said most of the Custodians are on their own mission. Only Lord Nehemoth and Lord Dekad are guarding the Eljudnir" Gin raises his hand
"I've finished my current mission and wished to report my findings to her majesty"
"You want to earn her praise too? Dynas already - I mean the queen is occupied as if the moment" Naru flails his arms
"What is Shirogane-sama doing? I hope she won't mind as it's important" Akane is slightly worried
"Hraesvalgr-sama offered one woman he captured to Shirogane-sama after seeing her so down today. Lord Nehemoth advised anyone to not directly disturb her for a while and report anything to him instead" Solas rubs the back of his head
"Nehemoth-sama didn't say much but I believe the real reason is Dynas-sama heard news about her majesty's children being alive after all. Our queen was so happy to hear that she's in her best mood"
The werewolves wag their tails, visibly overjoyed for their mistress. They don't always meet their queen since they report to Garmr, but just like everyone else in the castle, they are loyal and devoted to Shirogane by default.
"Her majesty's half devil children aren't from her bloodline if I recall. She took them in and loved them as her own" Akane's tone averts her gaze
"So what if they're not blood related? I know we'll all be happy if her majesty will have an heir from her own bloodline, but her majesty loved them like any mother loves their own children so even us low ranking werewolves don't view them as any different"
Solas looks at his fellow werewolves and the three nod in unison, clearly sharing the same sentiment. The werewolf scratches the back of his ear as he doesn't believe his opinion will matter to someone like Akane, who has higher ranking and authority compared to them.
"Whoa! Werewolves are really cooking stew here!"
Aura disturbs the conversation with a long whistle and a cheerful smile. She's accompanied by her two magical beasts and this time, Sebas.
"Good day, gentlemen. Are you perhaps servants of the Demon Lord?" Sebas politely greets them
"You two again. So you still followed me on the way here" Akane immediately unsheathes her katana
"W-wait, Akane-sama! It's the dark elf ranger that our pack encountered not too long ago" Tequila shouts before conflict can begin
"We would like an audience with your master if they're not too busy" Sebas makes the request
"Ainz-sama wishes to confirm if your master can be allies due to being acquainted with a Supreme Being. If not, we take it that you'd be a threat we need to eliminate" Aura cheerfully announced possibility of extermination
"Supreme Being?" Akane sheathes her katana after sensing no hostility from Sebas
The vampire's sharp instinct as a warrior distinguishes high Aura and Sebas. The latter is firm, genuinely polite, and disciplined. As for Aura, she doesn't trust the young dark elf due to threatening her with a bright smile.
"I am the creation of the Supreme Being, Touch Me. My creator is known to have saved fellow heteromorphs and some follow his path and we believe your mistress must have been one of those people"
"A white knight with a red cape, I believe. Her majesty has what she called an in-game screenshot hang up as a portrait of him" Akane sighs
"If your master respected my creator, Ainz-sama wishes to form a friendly realtionship with your faction. Ainz-sama is one of Touch Me-sama's closest comrade and wishes to make contact with a fellow player"
"Player?" Solas flips his ear
"A comrade of the greatest white knight and a player. It's true her majesty mentioned she's looking for other players such as her hero, Touch Me. I have my doubts, but we are ordered to report anything related to players and the white paladin to her. I will guide you to Eljudnir, but you cannot enter the castle itself"
"That's fine. We're just here to confirm" Aura places her hand on her hips
"We are messengers of Ainz Ooal Gown, the ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick" Sebas places his hand on his chest
"Nazarick? Ainz Ooal Gown? Her majesty always mentioned it's the guild name of her hero and that place is his base of operations. This is indeed worthy of her majesty's attention, but I cannot guarantee her audience" Akane's tone becomes respectful
"We only request to set up the proper date and time for a meeting between two leaders. Ainz-sama wishes to partner with your queen to benefit both sides"
"Follow me. I will guide you to the castle" Akane nods
"Akane-sama!" The werewolves are cautious and shocked
"They're not lying. The dragonoid butler is true to his word. Intimidating and firm yet gentle. Reminds of Nehemoth for some reason..."
Sebas, despite his aged and strict appearance, is actually one of the few NPCs friendly to humans, but Akane sees an image of Nehemoth, who's the opposite where he's younger and appears stoic.
Eljudnir castle...
Using a powerful teleportation spell, Gate, an enormous pitch black door emerges several meters away from the boundary of the concealment spell protecting the entire castle from prying magic casters. Akane emerges first and both Sebas and Aura steps out of the portal a second later.
"Beyond here is Eljudnir castle, home of the Demon Lord Shirogane. She's both our ruler and creator, so all the final decisions fall to her" Akane turns to them and reminds the two
"Of course. We will respect whatever the decision she may take"
"It's just my personal opinion, but I believe she would be overjoyed after learning about Ainz Ooal Gown. My queen has been longing to meet her savior again and even followed his teachings to am extent"
"So she's a fan of Touch Me-sama. Isn't that great, Sebas?" Aura nudges the butler
"Aura-sama, if you permit, I would like to speak to her. This is but my humble opinion, but I believe she should learn about my existence as Touch Me-sama's creation"
"Go ahead, Sebas. Ainz-sama wants to form a friendly relationship, so you're our best chances for the first meeting" Aura immediately agrees
"Thank you very much, Aura-sama"
Sebas bows while keeping his usual stoic and calm expression. It may not seem like it outside, but he's personally relieved he's given permission to be the leverage to create friendly ties between the two players.
"Akane, you brought them here"
A humanoid insectoid crashes down from the sky, taking no damage even when he makes a large crater around him when his foot and knee meet the ground. He's at least two meters tall in his normal form, but his physique is still bulky compared to other humanoids due to his thick armored carapace. The black humanoid hercules beetle with a short distinctive horn and only a pair of glowing red eyes are visible beyond his armored body.
"I am Dekad Millennia, her majesty's strongest shield and a warrior"
Dekad speaks with the voice of a young man with a deep voice despite possessing no mouth due to his face designed to resemble a knight's helmet. In fact, his entire body is like a suit of armor.
"I am Aura Bella Fiora, a Floor Guardian serving Ainz Ooal Gown-sama" Aura casually waves her hand
"I am Sebas Tian, a humble butler for Ainz Ooal Gown-sama"
"Our gatekeepers were alerted that you were bringing visitors who requested an audience with her majesty. Akane, what were you thinking?"
"Their intentions are genuine. They are strongly connected to her majesty's savior. Specifically, their master is one of Touch Me-sama's closest friends and a fellow guild member"
"Even if that's true, to casually bring strangers is utterly foolish, Akane. Your actions will endanger, Shirogane-sama. As her shield, I cannot allow any harm to come her way" Dekad slams his metallic chest with his fist
"I don't make hasty judgements and I'm certain there was no trick. I swear it in my life" Akane lifts one of her sheathed swords
"Akane, how can you possibly-" Dekad clenches his fists
"That's enough. I don't tolerate infighting"
"...!"
A familiar displeased voice has the two servants' kick in and immediately kneel with their heads lowered. The immense pressure and intimidating aura is the obvious indication how intense emotions leak out much like a passive ability.
"Nidhogg and Tamamo Mikon returned as soon as they were alerted. They confirmed they are different from the natives of this world"
The creator of the Custodians and ruler of Eljudnir appears without warning that they couldn't detect her the second she commands them.
(Normally, I wouldn't even personally come here without gouging their strength of confirming their intentions first ever since they entered the forest. It's risky as a ruler to expose themselves, but Akane did something impulsively and Dekad would never let them pass through...)
Unknown to everyone, Shirogane already anticipated the pair from Nazarick to be heading to their castle. Akane deeming them as not threats is the only factor outside of her expectations because it's not part of background she set for her.
(Hiding behind a throne all the time is unfit for a Demon Lord and in order to have them reveal their true intentions, I have to present myself. If I don't intervene, things would have escalated into an argument and possibly a confrontation...)
Shirogane is primarily worried at showing right in front of strangers when she doesn't know of their capabilities, but as a devil and a ruler, she prefers the diplomatic and neutral approach first before smiting threats to oblivion. The fact Aura and Sebas have been relaxed yet focused ever since entering the forest, specially Sebas, earns a slight benefit of the the doing from Shirogane. If they are truly messengers of someone else with power, Shirogane would never instigate conflict that will only bring harm to her subordinatesm
"I didn't sense her coming. Was it teleportation?" Aura rubs her chin
"Her presence is far different than the two. Aura-sama, this is no doubt the devil ruling them" Sebas makes his judgement
"Forgive what you saw. I am Shirogane, an archdevil player from Yggdrasil and one of the people Touch-san saved in the past"
"Aura-sama" Sebas asks for confirmation
"I'll let you handle the conversation" Aura gives a simple thumbs up
"Let me formally introduce myself. I am Sebas Tian, one of Ainz Ooal Gown-sama's humble servants and a creation of Touch Me-sama"
"You're Sebas! Touch-san's dragonoid butler NPC. I've heard a lot about you and I was even inspired- I mean, Touch-san told me about the NPC he created and other things about his guild" Shirogane clears her throat
The human side of Shirogane dominates this time and she immediately exclaims in complete excitement. When she realizes, she's in a role of a Demon Lord and a player at the same time, she snaps back to her usual friendly and gentle demeanor.
"Forgive me, but I still have my reservations even if you spoke of knowledge this world's natives shouldn't know. As part of my caution, allow me to test something" Shirogane is as wary as she is excited
"Test? What do you mean-"
Aura scratches her head, she feels the weight on her feet up to her knees and so does Sebas. There's no actual earthquake, but to their senses, it's as if the ground is vibrating and a cold sensation coils around their limbs. It's not a form of a spell causing fear or intimidation, but they both jolt at the guess that Shirogane's fixed gaze is peering right through them.
"Hmm?"
Sebas gazes back at Shirogane, seeing her dark scarlet eyes visibly brighten even in daylight. A devil stands right before him, but his instincts as a monk warns him of an entirely different presence. His heart races as heat engulfs her chest but not enough to be identified as a burning spell. If Sebas can describe it, he imagines the demon lord is extending her presence and engulfing those within her range, forcing their entirety laid bare.
"It stopped? Aw, I want to see more of it" Aura chuckles
The entire process lasts only in about a minute but it can extend if Shirogane wishes to. She simply achieved sufficient confirmation she requires from the two even if both sides are unaware of what kind of confirmation she would gain from merely standing in complete silence.
"What kind of skill was that?" Aura gently stomps the ground and looks around her
"It's like I can see the back of my mind" Sebas massages his mind
"The truth is...I don't really know"
"...?" Both Sebas and Aura blink in confusion
"I can perform it by instinct. It's something I can use to distinguish players, NPC, and this world's inhabitants apart. Although it's very useful, its range is limited to up to twenty meters"
Just like peering into the quality of someone's soul, Shirogane shyly admits her lack of knowledge to the nature of her own abilities.
"Since I managed to confirm that your business is serious, allow me to formally reintroduce myself. My name is Shirogane, an archdevil paladin and the ruler of Eljudnir. I'm also a big fan of Touch-san for all his kindness and guidance"
Shirogane loosens her sternness and somewhat speaks more casually even if two of her servants are behind her. It's rare for her to be genuinely friendly to others, let alone skip her precautions.
"If it's okay with you, can I shake your hand, Sebas-san"
"Please call me Sebas, Lady Shirogane. Also, I wouldn't mind a friendly handshake-"
To Sebas' friendly surprise, the moment she lifts his right hand and open his palms, Shirogane gently squeezes Sebas's hand with both of her smaller feminine hands. He can sense the slight shaking from excitement and disbelief and when he lifts his gaze to study her expression, the Demon Lord is openly smiling in bliss.
"I greatly admired Touch-san that I took the paladin class and remembered his ideals about justice. Even if he left the guild and the game a long time ago, I'm truly glad to meet his created NPC in person" Shirogane's tail flick in excitement
"I'm flattered my creator had inspired you a great deal, my lady" Sebas briefly smiles
"You're the real deal. I can sense a bit of his legacy in your soul, so I'm truly glad my doubts are cleared" Shirogane sighs on relief as she reluctantly pulls away her hands
"Good job, Sebas" Aura whispers to him
"Anyhow, What can I do for you?" Shirogane cheerfully asks
"Our master, Ainz-sama, wishes to arrange a private meeting between you two to discuss building friendly ties and a possible alliance between the Great Tomb of Nazarick and Eljudnir Castle" Aura delivers the message this time
"I'd gladly discuss an alliance Ainz Ooal Gown-san. Any of Touch-san's guild friends are already considered my allies"
"I'm glad you're quick to agree, but Ainz-sama prefers a personal and private discussion..." Aura wryly laughs
"I don't mind what place your master chooses to hold a discussion. Feel free to choose the time and location"
"Then we will inform Ainz-sama on the result and confirmation. We will return once we received the time and place of Ainz-sama's choosing" Aura salutes
"You will be able to find this place easily starting tomorrow since I'm going to remove the concealment and focus on defenses instead"
"May I ask why?" Sebas hesitates for a moment
"It's part of my goal to find my missing daughters who are half devil players"
"Aura-sama do you believe Ainz-sama might extend assistance?" Sebas asks for opinion
"I'm not certain myself, but Ainz-sama is kind to those who respect the Supreme Beings, so he might consider giving the Demon Lord a hand"
"I'm glad to hear that at least" Shirogane smiles a bit
"Well then, Demon Lord Shirogane, we will be taking our leave as we need to report this as soon as possible" Aura turns away
"It was a pleasure to meet you, Lady Shirogane. May we meet again" Sebas bows before following after Aura
The pair uses Greater Teleportation to leave the forest and in a hurry to report the success of the first meeting with the Demon Lord.
"I've never seen you this happy, Shirogane-sama" Akane slightly shakes her head
"I met the NPC personally created by Touch-san and confirmed one of his friends is here. As long as the alliance benefits both sides in the long term, I'd gladly accept it. Of course, I'm still wary of Ainz Ooal Gown, but I'm trusting my instincts as a player"
"Still, what Akane did is utterly careless" Dekad steps forward
"That's true, but I trust Akane's judgement. More importantly, this castle is designed to prevent intruders. Players can enter, but NPCs and summons need my permission first"
Shirogane lifts her head and her lips curve a gentle smile while staring at the thick and high outer walls of the silver castle of a demon lord. It's already enormous and spacious outside, but it's designed with three layers of "basement" to punish or test intruders with the throne room being the last place anyone can reach.
"Still, I will discuss this matter with you, Akane. You should have contacted me before bringing people you never met before. There was a chance it was a trick after all and you ignored every caution I instructed you" Shirogane resumes to her regal and disciplined persona
"I will accept any punishment, Shirogane-sama"
(It's true that it's careless and impulsive, so I can't have her take chances again and cause a mistake. I can't confirm how strong I am in this world and Eljudnir's defenses will be tested soon. As a leader, I must teach them extreme caution and not act on a whim)
Shirogane silently exhales since having the responsibility as a leader means being responsible for what she says or how she acts will affect her servants. They think highly of her while unaware that their ruler has no prior experience of managing and leading herself. To her, the experience of keeping everyone alive and her subordinates organized five hundred years ago was no more than "luck" and a bit of experience on "what not to do to avoid screwing up" in a company.
