With a groan, Richard began to wake up and take in where he was. He noticed that he was in the loft of the cabin. As he stirred, he realized Lynn was still asleep beside him. Through his sleep-fogged mind, he tried to remember how they got there. Both were freezing and shivering; how they had gotten the blankets to keep warm and then... He smiled down at Lynn and rubbed her cheek. She smiled in her sleep.
He reached up and took his jeans from where they were hung from a nearby lamp. He slipped them on and left Lynn to sleep, still wrapped in blankets. Not wanting to disturb her, he walked downstairs to stoke the fireplace. He then started a pot of tea to be ready when Lynn crawled out of bed. Taking a mug of coffee, he headed outside and down to the lake barefoot. He sat on the end of the dock with his feet dangling in the cool water. He took in the beauty around them. They were in a place where the mundane dissolved. He felt part of the landscape—a witness to the quiet magic that unfolds when nature and solitude intertwine… at least until he fell into the water. He came up, shaking water out of his eyes. The first thing he saw was Lynn, wearing only his shirt from the previous night, laughing on the dock. "You will never learn, will you? "
"Ha ha ha," he splashed water at her.
Lynn flinched at the spray; "We are even now Flyboy."
"I at least helped you out."
"True," Lynn looked around and tossed him a rope.
"What, no oar this time?" He grabbed the rope and allowed Lynn to help him on the deck.
"I've learned better," she grinned and kissed him.
"Ha, ha, sweetheart." He returned her kiss and wrapped his arms around her. As Richard and Lynn stood on the deck, wrapped in each other's arms, the sun began to rise, casting a warm glow over the tranquil lake. The water rippled gently, reflecting the pink and orange hues of the sky. Lynn's laughter echoed, and Richard couldn't help but smile. Despite the chilly water and unexpected plunge, he felt alive and connected to something greater.
Lynn leaned her head against his chest. "You know," she said softly, "We still have this suite for another hour."
Richard nodded, his heart swelling. "Yeah, but Lilly and the kids are meeting us for breakfast in a half hour."
"So, thirty minutes until we return to the chaos and noise on the other side of that door." Lynn sighed into his chest.
Richard glanced at Lynn, her eyes reflecting the morning light. "I love you," he whispered.
Lynn leaned in, their lips meeting in a tender kiss. "I love you too, Flyboy."
"Commander Skyler?" A voice came over the com.
"Yes…" Richard answered, exasperated, looking down at Lynn.
"I'm sorry, Captain Skyler. The computer said Commander Skyler was with you."
Lynn whispered, "Force of habit, huh?" Richard shrugged," I'm here; what do you need?"
"Sir, Commander LaTrall Just arrived?"
"Today? I thought he wasn't scheduled to arrive until tomorrow?" Lynn gave Richard an apologetic look.
"He was sir, but he felt it would be wise to arrive early and get the discussion over with."
"Indeed," Lynn looked up at Richard and sighed, "Lieutenant, inform him I will be there shortly."
"Aye, sir." The lieutenant closed the connection.
"Duty calls, Flyboy." Lynn kissed him. "Are you going to be ok having breakfast with Lilly?"
"Unfortunately, duty calls loudly," he sighed but smiled. "I can handle your mom over breakfast with the kids. If need be, I know I have stacks of paperwork that have piled up since I left. It will give me an out if things get too heated."
"So, you aren't looking forward to seeing the kids?" Lynn teased as she led him back into the cabin.
"I didn't say that." He teased back, "But you need to take care of your business, and I will see you in a few hours."
"Indeed, I need to get into uniform, and you, sir," Lynn kissed his cheek and sashayed her way to the replicator. "Need to get out of those soggy jeans and to breakfast before your crew finds something for you to do."
As Richard and Lynn reluctantly parted, their lips still tingling from the kiss, the sun continued its ascent. Richard watched Lynn disappear through the holosuite door, her silhouette framed by the soft light. Duty had a way of intruding on their stolen moments, but he knew it was part of the life they'd chosen.
