Everything seemed at peace under the moonless, cloudless night, yet Crystal was restless. Learning that her ex-boyfriend, Peridot Starlighter, was now teaching at her sister's middle school had thrown her into a storm of emotions. Their bitter breakup had left wounds far from healed, and the prospect of facing him again was daunting.
Despite her fears and the painful memories of their tumultuous relationship, Crystal's courage in facing her past was inspiring. The thought of seeing Peridot again was like reopening old scars.
Crystal was taken aback when Shaggy mentioned encountering Peridot at the diner. Shaggy's observation of Peridot's slight attitude, which he believed masked deeper insecurities, only added to the enigma surrounding him. Ruby had nothing but praise for him as her teacher, and even Amber and Scooby advised giving him a chance, providing a reassuring note amidst Crystal's uncertainty.
Unable to relax, Crystal quietly slipped out of bed without waking Shaggy. She moved to the living room, where a concealed communication device, a relic from her home planet, was hidden behind a painting. This device was her only link to her people, a reminder of the home she had left behind. After checking that the energy crystal, the device's power source, had recharged and ensuring the device was ready, she spoke in her native tongue, which sounded like Esperanto to humans.
"Saluton, ĉi tiu estas Crystal Starstone alvokanta el la planedo Tero. Bonvolu konekti min al D-ro Selenite Starstone ĉe Interspaca Medicina Universitato. Diru al ŝi, ke ĝi estas urĝa." (Hello, this is Crystal Starstone calling from planet Earth. Please connect me to Dr. Selenite Starstone at the Interspace Medical University. Tell her it's urgent.)
After a few moments, her mother, Selenite, appeared on the screen, looking concerned. "Kristalo! Jam pasis aĝoj! Kial vi ne enregistriĝis pli frue? Via patro kaj mi maltrankviliĝis pri vi! Kiel vi fartas kaj kiel fartas Ruby? Ĉu ĉio estas en ordo? Vi aspektas kvazaŭ ĉagrenita. Kio estas la afero, kara?" (Crystal! It's been ages! Why didn't you check in sooner? Your father and I have been worried sick about you! How are you and Ruby? Is everything okay? You look troubled. What's the matter, dear?)
"Ĉio estas plejparte bona, panjo," Crystal replied. "Bedaŭrinde mi ĵus eksciis, ke Peridoto estas ĉi tie kaj instruas en la lernejo de Ruby. Mi ne certas kiel ĝuste trakti tion." (Everything is mostly fine, Mom. Unfortunately, I just found out that Peridot is here and teaching at Ruby's school. I'm not sure how to handle this.)
"Ĉu li jam faris ion malbonan al vi aŭ al la resto de la familio?" Selenite asked. (Has he done anything bad to you or the rest of the family yet?)
"Ankoraŭ ne," Crystal admitted. "Mi havas la senton, ke li nur volas paroli kun mi sola. Sed mi timas fari tion. Ĉu vi pensas, ke mi devus aŭ ne devus?" (Not yet. I have a feeling he just wants to talk to me alone. But I'm afraid to do so. Do you think I should or shouldn't?)
"Mi mem estas iom maltrankvila pro via pasinta historio kun li," her mother replied cautiously. "Do se vi renkontos lin, certigu, ke vi prenu Sukcenon kaj havu formon de protekto. Sed ankaŭ certigu, ke Shaggy estas proksime, se aferoj malbeliĝos." (I am a bit uneasy about your past history with him, so if you meet him, make sure you take Amber and have a form of protection. Also, make sure Shaggy is nearby if things get ugly.)
"Tre bone, mi fidas vian juĝon, panjo," Crystal nodded. "Mi parolos kun li ĉi-semajnfine ĉe la loka kafejo, do ni estu en publika loko. Mi informos vin kaj paĉjon. Amu kaj sopiras vin ambaŭ!" (Very well, Mom, I trust your judgment. I'll talk to him this weekend at the local café, so we'll be in a public place. I'll keep you and Dad informed. Love and miss you both!)
"Ni ambaŭ amas kaj sopiras vin kaj Ruby. Bonvolu tuj diri al ni kio okazas. Kaj bonvolu kontakti nin pli ofte!" Selenite responded. (We love and miss you and Ruby. Please tell us what happens right away, and please contact us more often!)
"Volos Panjo, faros. Bonan nokton!" Crystal ended the call. (Will do, Mom. Good night!)
As the intergalactic call terminated, Crystal slumped against the wall. How in the universe was she supposed to handle this? She'd also see Peridot at the school for Career Day in two days!
Two days later, on the drive to school, Ruby was excited yet apprehensive. She was eager to finally meet Arnette DuBois's father, Philip, a successful green tech businessman. She'd already met her other friends' parents, so Philip was the only one left.
Principal Tobias Vandom stood at the front of the assembly hall. He was a figure of authority and fairness, treating everyone equally without favoritism. "Good morning, students and parents," Principal Vandom began, his voice firm yet welcoming. "Today, we have a wonderful opportunity to learn about various careers and how the world is changing. Please give your full attention to our speakers."
First up was Arnette's father, Philip DuBois. With his medium-length platinum blond hair and bright light blue eyes, he cut an impressive figure. He spoke passionately about the advancements in green technology. "The future lies in sustainable energy and environmentally friendly innovations. When you enter the workforce, many of today's jobs will have evolved, and new opportunities will emerge.
We are seeing increased demand for professionals who can develop and implement technologies that reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency. I encourage you to focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) subjects, which will be crucial in addressing our environmental challenges."
Next was Arsenio Flores's father, Lionel Flores. Tall, well-built, and very good-looking, Lionel commanded respect. "As a police officer, my job is to protect and serve the community.
It requires integrity, respect, and accountability. Although law enforcement will continue to evolve with technology in the future, its core values will remain the same.
We're seeing the integration of advanced surveillance systems, data analytics, and non-lethal weapons to improve public safety and reduce crime. Those interested in this field should focus on physical fitness and technological proficiency."
Daeshawna Hanshaw, Chrissy's mother, took the stage next. Her wild, curly hair and flawless, light black skin dazzled the audience. "As the community center manager, I encourage kids to be their best and avoid the wrong paths. It's about empathy, respect, and providing a safe space for everyone.
In the future, community programs will become even more essential as we address issues like mental health, social justice, and inclusivity. I urge you to develop strong communication skills and a deep sense of empathy to help build a supportive and inclusive community."
Danica Dawson, Cornelia's mom, followed. She wore a purple dress shirt and black pants. She was taller than her daughter, with messy auburn hair and dark blue eyes. "As a child psychologist, I listen and provide personalized support. Each person is unique, and addressing their needs is essential.
The field of psychology is rapidly evolving with new research in neuroscience, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and telehealth services. To prepare for a career in this area, you should focus on psychology, sociology, and communication studies. Understanding human behavior and adapting to new therapeutic techniques will be critical."
Finally, Ruby's sister stood in for their parents. Unable to reveal their true identities, she spoke about her job as a photographer. "Capturing moments through the lens is more than just a job; it's about telling stories and preserving memories. The photography industry is constantly changing with advancements in digital technology, social media, and virtual reality.
To thrive, you must stay up-to-date with the latest devices and procedures and be ready to acclimate to new trends. Ingenuity, technical skills, and the proficiency to market yourself will be vital in this competitive occupation."
Throughout the assembly, Ruby felt a mix of pride and anxiety. Seeing Arnette's father in person was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. She glanced over at Arnette, who seemed equally interested in the proceedings.
After the assembly, Crystal found herself in the school hallway, bumping into Peridot. The tension was noticeable as they exchanged glances. "Can we talk?" Peridot asked, his tone sincere.
"Saturday at the local café," Crystal replied, keeping her voice steady. "We can chat then."
Peridot nodded, a hint of relief in his eyes. "I'll see you there."
Crystal took a deep breath, feeling trepidation and determination as he walked away. She had no idea what to anticipate but knew she had to face this challenge head-on.
