Author's Note: Hi all! Here is the next chapter! Riley and Maya are now 9, playing together in her room. This one will be a short chapter, just highlighting a huge part of Maya's life.
CHAPTER SIX
"What's wrong, Maya?" Nine year old Riley asked her as they played together in her room.
Maya shrugged, "my daddy left."
Riley appeared confused, "what do you mean he left?" She asked.
"He just… left. My mommy doesn't tell me why, just says he left us." Riley seemed worried and Maya wasn't sure why but they continued playing nonetheless.
That was until Topanga came into Riley's bedroom and told Maya it was time to go, she led Maya out of the room but Riley did not follow.
Topanga walked in front of Riley and knelt down, "are you okay, sweetie?" She asked.
Riley shook her head, "what's wrong?" Her mother asked.
"Maya said her daddy left, does this mean my daddy is leaving too?" She asked, her lip quivering. The older woman's eyes widened at the news before she quickly masked it with a smile.
Topanga sighed and shook her head, "no sweetie. Your daddy isn't leaving and he never will. He loves you and Auggie too much to leave."
"Then why did Maya's daddy leave?"
Riley didn't understand, afterall she was too young. "Sometimes adult relationships can be complicated… that's all sweetie."
Riley nodded, seeming happy with her answer and left the room to say goodbye to Maya, Topanga following after taking a moment to truly register what Riley had told her.
Riley waved Maya off as did Cory and the door shut as soon as Topanga entered the room.
"Riley, honey?" She called.
"Yes, mommy?"
"Can you go play in your room until dinner is ready?" Riley nodded and skipped towards her room.
"Everything okay?" Cory asked as he and Topanga prepared their dinner.
"Did Katy seem off to you?"
Cory shrugged, "not really. Why?"
"Riley told me Kermit left." Cory's eyes widened, "did Maya say anything to you?" He shook his head.
"Poor Maya." He said sadly.
"Maybe you should talk to her." Topanga suggested.
Cory furrowed his brow, "Katy?"
"No, Maya." The lawyer corrected.
Cory nodded once, "maybe. You think she'd want to talk to me?"
Topanga nodded, "she seems to like you, Cory. I think she would have no trouble talking to you."
Cory took what Topanga said in, maybe he would talk to Maya. She had to be struggling with her father leaving, he wondered what this meant for him being Maya's dad as well. But soon shook his head of that thought.
The following day Maya came round again, except this time Cory stopped her before she went to see Riley and sat her down on the couch.
"I figured we could talk, if you want to?" She nodded, "great. So, how're things at home?" He asked.
Maya shrugged, "things have been better since my dad left." She stated plainly.
Cory raised his brows, "how do you feel about him leaving?" He asked.
"I guess I miss him, but my mom said it was her fault he left."
"Why's that?"
Maya shrugged again, "she said to not ask questions about it so I don't."
SIlence erupted for a moment, "can I go play with Riley now?" She asked.
Cory nodded, "yeah. Go ahead." The blonde girl got off the couch and ran towards Riley's bedroom, Cory watching her every move.
He sighed to himself, maybe getting Maya to talk was harder than he first thought. He just hoped she wouldn't bottle anything up.
Thank you for reading! I thought it was best to cover this part of the story considering this does happen in the show. I wasn't sure how either Cory or Topanga would act, so this is what I came up with.
