Riley & Madeline's and The Costume Party
In an old house in Paris that was covered with Vines lived thirteen little girls, in two straights lines the oldest one was Riley and the smallest one was Madeline.
One day the girls were playing in the back garden when they suddenly heard a loud noise.
Madeline gasped "What could that be?"
(Girls talking at once)
Miss Clavel who had heard the noise as well had come outside to see.
The teacher said "Oh my goodness!"
Dainelle said "An elephant loose from the zoo?"
Chole said "An earthquake?"
Riley looked over the wall that separated the two houses. The older twin said "Ah, it is coming from the embassy!"
Genevieve Woof woof
: It was something grand no doubt for a giant truck was pulling out.
Madeline said looking over the wall as well. "Someone very important must be visiting the Spanish ambassador"
: A workman hung bright light all over while the gardener cuts the clovers...
Riley said "Voila look!"
Chole said "A tent!"
Dainelle said "The biggest one I have ever seen!"
Madeline called out "Pepito what is happening? Is the King of Spain coming to visit?"
Pepito said "Maybe, both the King and Queen!"
Riley said "How exciting!"
Steven said "And maybe not"
Chole said "But then who is this all for?'"
Madeline said "I know a famous Spanish bullfighter!"
Pepito said "Maybe then again, maybe not"
: Not in recent history had there been such a mystery.
Madeline said rather annoyed "Pepito-" as she pulled the giant flower
Pepito Aaaaah!
Madeline said "All right Pepito talk sensibly!"
Riley looked surprised and said "Madeline, where did you learn that word?"
Madeline said with a smile Some older teenager, I heard walking by one night talking on a cell phone, she used that word to some friend on the phone!" before Miss Helen closed the window. You can sleep through anything Riley.
Pepito said "I am talking sensibly, we are having a ball. Maybe a sheep or princesses will come, maybe ten or twenty."
Riley said now annoyed "Maybe you do not know who you invited"
Steven said "It is a silly costume ball, anyone could show up!"
Nicole said Wow'
Lulu said how Exciting!
Pepito said "It will be the grandest ball ever!"
As the girls whispered to one another.
Madeline said "We are invited to this ball. Nest-ce pase?"
Steven said "You? Oh I don't not know."
Hannah said "Steven, Pepito! You naughty boys, you forgot to give these to the girls!"
Pepito said "Oh these ha ha, we must have forgotten Mama!"
The girls Gasped as Madeline took the invitations from the boys.
Riley said "It is the invitation to the Ball!"
Steven said "Of course, you are all our best friends!"
Madeline said "And there will be a grand prize for best costume!"
Chole said "How exciting!"
Nicole said "I shall win!"
Riley said "No, moi!"
Dainelle said "No I will!"
Madeline said "No, moi!"
Pepito said "Come and play Bullfight Madeline, I will even let you be the matador this time!"
Madeline said "Sorry Pepito, we must start making our costumes!"
Pepito said "But-"Aah!

However the girls had already run off.

: the girls work on their costumes with determination.

: giggles at every silly new creation.

later that weekend at Park
Emily and her school music teacher said ready for your final practice before the talent contest Riley Saturday.
Riley nodded and began singing

Didn't have to do much, as far as I can tell
Her godmother was two-thirds fairy
And suddenly her lot was a lot less scary

The music teacher Ms Macie, smiled and said "Well done Riley you're practicing has really payed off. "I will see you both at the show this weekend. Little did Riley know that something was about to happen to change her preforming.
Later on back at the old house after dinner,
Madeline who finally had gotten an idea for her costume said aha
: she thought of something to her likening. and the girls knew it would be quite striking. suddenly the room went dark.
Madeline said "Voila!"
All the girls gasped
Lulu said "Who is she?"
Madeline said "I am the honored of all France, the Joan of Arc!"
: The room was quite, no one stirred, not one little girl could say a word.
Madeline said "What's wrong, you do not like it?"
Nicole said "Who ever heard a Joan of Arc with polka dots!"
Madeline said "Polka dots?"
as she went to the mirror
Madeline said "No Nicole nothing, my face is clean. "
Riley looked into the mirror and gasped "Danielle, you have spots too!"
Chole said "And you Nicole!"
Nicole said "You too Chloe!"
All the girls "We all have spots!"
: They hurry off to Miss Clavel.
All the girls yelled "Miss Clavel!"
Miss Clavel look up from the book she was reading in the living room
Miss Clavel said "What? And gasped!"
: Who knew at once they were not well. the twelve little girls were put to bed, they waited there with anxious dread.
Dr. Chon said "Hmm hmm, say ahh!"
Dainelle said "Ahh!"
Dr. Chon said "Ah ha!"
Miss Clavel said, "Please Dr. Chon, what is it?"
Dr. Chon said, "These little girls have the chicken-pox!"
Madeline gasped and then hurried downstairs and out the door to go tell Steven.
Steven was as sad as Madeline was to hear the news. So to help cheer the girls up he and Madeline got to work on making get well cards.
back at the old house
All twelve girls said "Chicken-pox?"
Dainelle said, "What does this mean?"
Dr Chon said "It means you will have spots, and itching for awhile, and you must try not to scratch but after that, you will be just fine!"
: but things were wrong then they had dreamed.
Dr. Chon said "You little girls must now be quarantined!"
Riley said "What is quarantined?"
Dr. Chon said "You must stay away from other people so they don't catch it too"
Chole said "We must stay away from Miss Clavel?"
Miss Clavel said "Not I little girls, I had the Chicken pox as a child, and I can't catch it again."
Dainelle said "Does that mean no morning walks?"
Dr. Chon said "No morning walks"
Chole said "No visit to the Zoo?"
Dr. Chon said "No zoo"
Riley said "No Costume Ball? Then looking at the doorway, where Madeline was standing at early. Riley said I can still see Madeline, oui Dr. Chon and do the Talent show?"
Dr. Chon said "Especially no Costume Ball, and no Talent show I am sorry Riley but Madeline can't come in this room" for awhile Miss Clavel"
Riley said sadly "No Costume Ball, and now no Talent show and not seeing Maddie This will be one long week" but Dr. Chon I must preform in the show I have been practicing very hard.
Chole said "This can't be!"
Nicole said "My beautiful costume!"
Dainelle and the girls said "Quelle horreur!"
Miss Clavel said "Dr. Chon, you sure Madeline won't catch the Chicken pox?"
Dr. Chon said "I am sure Miss Clavel, just be on the Look out for skin blisters, scabs, ulcers, or red spots, fatigue, fever, or loss of appetite."
Miss Clavel said alright it will be hard to keep Madeline away from Riley for that long. "Thanks for coming by Dr. Chon" after the doctor left, The teacher then went downstairs to let Mrs Murphy know what had happened to the girls
An hour later Miss Clavel had just come back downstairs after checking on the her patients when the phone rang. Miss Clavel answered it.
"Hello the teacher said. On the other line was Kathy.
Kathy said Hello miss Clavel I saw dr chon coming down the road and I asked him if everything was alright and he said that the little girls have chicken pox. I want to make sure that my nieces are alright?
Miss Clavel sighed and said well Madeline is fine but Riley has the chicken pox though.
Kathy said oh dear well then maybe I should come and pick up Madeline so she doesn't catch it.
Miss Clavel knew what would happen if she sent Madeline to Kathy's place.
"So taking a breath miss Clavel said. I'm sorry Kathy but I don't think it's a good idea for you to have Madeline with you.
Kathy was shocked at what she just had been told. Kathy said and why is that?
Miss Clavel said well you have seemed to keep me out of the loop when it has come to Madeline's health.
Kathy was shocked as she thought how did that teacher find out about that.
Miss Clavel then said, " I think I'll call Helen and her family to come and get Madeline.
Kathy was now angry as she yelled No I'm her aunt and she will come stay with me until Riley's better.
Miss Clavel said in a stern tone, I'm sorry Kathy but Madeline is not going with you.
Kathy then yelled even louder I will get Madeline and that's final.
Miss Clavel said to Kathy I said no and that's my final answer. Good bye.
With that Miss Clavel hung up the phone. And then she called Helen's number and left a message for her asking her to pick up Madeline before Kathy could do anything else. Miss Clavel just hung up the phone once more when the front door opened and Madeline came in with a stack of get well soon cards.
Miss Clavel smiled down at the small girl said what are all those my dear?"
Madeline said well Steven and I made the girls get well cards. Can I take them to the bedroom?
Miss Clavel said "oh I'm sorry Madeline but I'm afraid you can't see your sister or your friends right now. They can't be around you as you might catch the chicken pox.
Madeline gasped and said you mean I can't see Riley until she's better?
Miss Clavel nodded.
Madeline sighed sadly as she said classes won't be much fun as I will be the only person in the classroom with you.
Miss Clavel said well I'm afraid classes have been canceled until the girls are better because I have to take care of them. The teacher told her small student.
Madeline said then I will be here all alone?
Miss Clavel was about to answer when the phone rang once more. Miss Clavel answered it and when she came back over to Madeline she said, no you won't be alone because you will be staying with Emily and her parents.
Madeline gave a small smile as she liked staying with Emily and her parents. then said alright.
Miss Cleve gave her a hug and then she said I'll go pack your bag for you since you can't be around the others.
Madeline nodded as she handed over the cards that she and Steven had made. and then said can you also give these to them please Riley's card is on top and it's the biggest.
Miss Clavel smiled and took the stack of cards from her student. Of course I will the teacher said. Now you go get an snack from Mrs Murphy while I'm upstairs.
Madeline nodded and walked to the kitchen.
Miss clavel smiled and then went upstairs to pack Madeline's bag. After packing Madeline's bag, The phone rang and Miss Clavel came back downstairs and answered it
Helen said hello Miss Clavel I got your message,
Miss Clavel said Helen I am so sorry I had to call on such short notice
Helen said no more Miss Clavel. I understand and I'm on my way over bye.
After Helen hung up her phone she said to her husband, Mathew, can you set another Plate out, Madeline will be with us
Matthew said why what happened ?
Helen said i will explained everything when I get back with Madeline she may be shy being without Riley this Week. Helen then left to go get Madeline.
Matthew said I will let Emily know.
Emily then came into the kitchen and said tell me what dad,
Matthew then told his daughter what had happened.
Emily said Dad the School Talent show had been changed to a school night.
Meanwhile While Miss Clavel was back upstairs tending to the 12 girls,, Madeline stood in the foyer waiting for the doorbell to ring. A few moments later, the doorbell rang and Madeline answered it. The small girl was shocked to see who was standing on the stoop of the front door.
Madeline took a deep breath and said a little bit timidly, hi aunt Kathy what are you doing here.
Kathy said I'm coming to take you home with me.
Madeline said wait I'm going to stay with Emily and her parents and my bag isn't packed yet.
Kathy said no you are coming with me and I have clothes for you. Kathy then reached out and tried to grab Madeline's hand.
Madeline pulled her arm out of reach from her aunt and said no.
Kathy then got angry and said come with me now. then reached out and grabbed Madeline's ear and pulled her out the door.
Madeline winced in pain as she said rather loudly Let go of me.
That only made Kathy pull Madeline's ear harder.
Kathy just made it out the door with her niece when Helen was getting out of her car
Helen looked up and saw what was going on and she gasped and said forcefully Let go of her right now!
Kathy looked up in surprise which made her let go of her nieces ear.
Madelin, who had small tears of pain in her eyes, quickly ran to Helen and wrapped her arms around her.
Helen knelt down and hugged the small girl back while saying softly. "Shhh it's alright you're safe with me now."
Madeline then let go of Helen and wiped her eyes.
Helen then turned to Kathy and said How could you do that to her? You could've caused Madeline to be really hurt.
Kathy was about to say something when Miss Clavel came outside with Madeline's bag.
Miss Clavel smiled at Helen and said Hello, however her smile faded as she saw Kathy.
The teacher asked annoyed Kathy what are you doing here. I told you that Madeline was going to stay with the McDowell's.
Kathy huffed and harshly and said and I told you Miss Clavel that Madeline was going to stay with me.
Helen said Madeline shouldn't be anywhere around you right now after what you just did to her.
Miss Clavel then asked Helen with wide eyes what did she do now?
Helen said while glaring at Kathy, this lady was pulling Madeline by her ear very hard to her car.
Miss Clavel gasped and turned to Kathy with narrowed eyes, and said "is that true?"

Helen said Miss Clavel, why don't you go call the police as I'm sure they would love to hear about what has just happened.

The teacher then looked at Madeline who was still trembling ever so slightly.

Miss Clavel then gave Madeline a hug and after that gave the girl her bag.
The teacher then said "now you have Fun with Emily and her parents and I know you will be on your best behavior.
Madeline said oui .
Helen said don't worry Miss Clavel, you just focus on getting the other girls better. Madeline always has perfect behavior when she's with us. You should be very proud of both her and Riley.
Miss Clavel smiled and said, " I am very proud of them.
Madeline smiled and then looking up to the bedroom window and saw her sister looking down at her.
Riley opened the window and called down to her sister, Tell Emily "I say hi Maddie."
Madeline smiled and called back I will.
Helen the said "Feel better sweetheart."
Riley said thanks Miss Helen and I love my card Maddie.
Madeline said you're welcome.
Miss Clavel smiled as she let Madeline and Riley talk to one another.
Then the teacher said gently, After the twins finished talking to each other, Miss Clavel said gently ok Riley time to close the window and get back to bed. I don't want you or the other girls to get anymore sick.
Riley nodded and said see you soon Maddie and Riley closed the window.
Madeline waved and Miss Clavel gave her small student one more hug. Then she and Helen got into the car and drove to the house.
: Suday morning when they checks their clocks they knew there will be no more walks...
(Girls Groan)
: Just the itchy spotty chick pox.
Riley said "Why did we have to get sick now?"
Nicole said "There is nothing to make it go away!"

Riley said worriedly "Miss Clavel how is Madeline?" did Miss Helen Call?

(As night time comes)
Miss Clavel said "Good night little girls, sleep well"
All twelve girls said "Good night
Miss Clavel. sighed" and shook her head, and closed the door.

Miss Clavel said "No Madeline you can't, be over here i m sorry but Riley send her love
Madeline said "Oui Miss Clavel, night!"
Miss Clavel said "Good night Madeline, sleep well!"
: as the days marched by in slowly succession... more spots appeared in quick progression, levering the girls in a deep depression.
Chole said "I have more spots than freckle's!"
Dainelle said "Even my spot has a spot!"
Riley said "I have more spots than this ladybug!"
Miss Clavel said "Cheer up girls, it will not last forever"
as the Girls Sight
: but they could not help but cry for they miss chasing butterflies.
(Girls Sighs)
Pepito said "Riley where are you?"
Riley said "Bonjour Pepito, we are up here!"
Pepito said "Come out and play but wait, is this no costume?"
Riley said "No it is not a costume, it is the Chicken pox"
Pepeito said "Chicken pox? But chickens don't have that many spots!"
Pepito started laughing at the girls with spots on their faces.
Riley said "You shouldn't laugh at people who are sick!"
Pepito said "Wait Riley I am sorry, I will cheer you up. You see it?
Pepito come back with his bull riding costumes " It is what I am wearing to the ball, is it not magnifico?
Riley said the ball!"
as she, Danielle and Chloe ran back inside crying.
Pepito said "Wait, what is wrong? What did I say?"
: Little did Pepito know his costume would cause such a blow
Pepito said "Riley please I am sorry, what did I do?"
: there was nothing left to go but go.
Steven said "Pepito, what were you thinking?"
Pepito said "Steven I didn't mean to cause a blow, I just wanted to cheer them up!"
Steven said "Well me and Madeline made get well cards, she and Emily are heading out to the flower shop" this afternoon.
Pepito said " we have will have to come along too Steven"
Steven said I agree Pepito.
That night Madeline had climbed into bed and tried to fall asleep. However it was hard with Riley not being there. After trying for awhile Madeline just couldn't fall asleep and thinking of her twin sister back at the old house who was sick in bed, Madeline started to cry softly. Helen heard Madeline crying and came into the room and tried to comfort her. Emily who had woken up to Madeline's sobs as well also came into the room and handed Madeline her small stuffed little bunny.
Emily said "Mom I will sleep with Madeline for the week it may make her feel better.
On Monday Morning Helen came into the bedroom and smiled seeing Emily sleeping next to Madeline.
Helen then gently shook both girls awake and said Madeline, Emily time to get up.
As the girls slowly woke up,
Helen said Madeline I know that the last time you and Riley stayed with us you were able to wear your school uniform. However this week you are going to wear a spare uniform of Emily's. I know it's a little different but the school called and said that even though they understand the circumstances. All students must wear the same uniform. I hope you're alright with that.
Madeline nodded and got out of bed.
Helen smiled and gave the small girl a hug. then said now you two go get ready and I'll have breakfast ready for you. Also your lunches are already packed.
The two kids nodded. And quickly got ready. When they were finished getting dressed,

After breakfast, Helen drove the two girls to school.

Ms Macie said here try this long blue Drees and black shoes it will make you taller for tonight
Madeline said Riley was supposed to be the one singing. I don't know if I can go and sing on the stage in front of everyone by myself. Madeline said nervously.
Emily said Madeline Please Ms Macie will be reworked the song and take Riley's part out. I know You are nervous about not being with Riley this week but I know you can sing just Imagine if you and Riley were singing together.

That evening the show was going well. Madeline was backstage pacing back and forth as the School Principal Greg introduced her.
Greg said that last song there from the great stage show Matilda don't know if you've seen the film I thought the film was extraordinary and a lot of the reason that is a small redhead is from just down the road here in Paris and due to the Chicken pox that Riley caught so guess what she thought that she'd like to come along and sing something for you welcome to the stage Madeline.
Madeline took a deep breath and walked onto the stage. Looking out into the crowd of people, as she froze and looked down at her feet,
Sally said why she just standing there?

When the song was over the whole crowd burst into cheers. Hearing the noise, a huge smile came across Madeline's face.
After a few more acts the principal came back on stage to announce the winner.

Once Madeline was off the stage, Emily, Sally, Kim, Helen and Mathew all crowded around her giving the small girl huge hugs. With the huge smile still on her face,
Madeline said thank you but the Trophy belongs to Emily because she helped me get the courage to go up on the stage and sing alone.
Emily said that Nice Madeline but look I want you to share the trophy with Riley as a way to help cheer Riley up.

As the group walked out of the building,
A delivery Man said Madeline I have delivery for Madeline.

Madeline smiled as she read the card the small girl said said they're from Riley.
Helen said Emily did you call Riley and tell her to order flowers for Madeline?

Matthew said Riley told Miss Clavel that she wanted to send her sister flowers. So Miss Clavel called me to let me know that the man was coming to deliver them.
Helen and Matthew then took the group of friends out for ice cream to celebrate Madeline winning the talent show.
As the four girls were eating their ice cream, Sally, Kim and Emily who had also been invited to the costume ball were talking about what costumes were going to be worn.
Madeline sighed as she heard her friends talking about the costume ball.
Sally saw this and said. "Madeline, what is your costume going to be?
Madeline said well I was going to be Joan of Arc but I don't think I should go to the ball if Riley and the others are not allowed to go.
Kim said "well hopefully your other friends will be better by the end of the week."
Madeline said "Oh I hope so however they won't be able to wear the costumes they have been working on.

Kim then whispered her idea to Madeline's ear.
Madeline said with a huge smile "Thanks Kim that's a great idea.
Kim said trust me it will work Maddie i know it
: as the big day near. the girls felt poor hearing the excitement from next door. but Riley was tried of feeling so bed of staying inside with nothing to do.
Riley said "No more sighing"
Chole said "But we have nothing to do!"
Nicole said "We can't not go to have fun !
Dainelle said "And we are missing the Costume Ball!"

As the girls laugh
Dainelle said "And I have a clown!"
Chole said "And I have a dog, it is Genevieve! Now you Riley, what is on your tummy?"
Riley said "I have a lot of spots"
: It took extra long to connect the dots, they check her stomach with great care, but no one could figure out what was there.

: the next morning came without a sigh or a moan so Miss Clavel went to the phone and dialed the number of Dr. Chon.
Miss Clavel said "Bonjour doctor, I think my little girls are almost well"
as Miss Clavel Called Helen and told her the good news
Helen said Madeline will be so happy in fact she won the Talent show, and is brought the trophy home we will see you all after Breakfast.
: and so on the dot of a quarter past nine. the doctor entered the house all covered with vines and examined the girls in two straight lines.
Dr. Chon said "So Riley, how are you feeling today?"

: and to make sure he understood. she did a cartwheel where she stood.

Dr. Chon said while writing on a notepad "Hmm I see, ah yes, ah ha!"

Dr. Chon cleared his throat "I am very proud of you mes enfants!"
Riley said "Do we get to go to the ball, and can I finally see my twin sister again?"
All the girls said "Please say yes!"
Miss Clavel said "Shh little girls, let the doctor finish!"
Riley said but Miss Clavel i m sorry but can we hurry up pleases I wanted to see Madeline and find out how she did;
: after some time that seem like ages. he pronounce them not contagious.
Dainelle said "Then we can we go to the ball?"
Dr. Chon said "I don't see why not?"
Later that morning
All 12 of the girls ran to the window and shouted "Pepito, Steven! Pepito, Steven!"
Riley said "Pepito, Steven we are no longer sick!"
Dainelle said "We can come to the ball!"
Pepito said "You are coming to the ball with all these spots?"
Steven gave his brother a stern look. and said "Do not worry girls, no one will laugh"
Pepito said "Just look at your spots!"
All the twelve girls said "Oh no!"
: true there spots were not gone each girls still has a batch but they were not the sort that person could catch.
Dainelle said "All these spots!"
Chole said "We can't not go to the ball!"
Chole said "Everyone will laugh at us"
Riley said "No Chloe, no one well laugh"

Madeline who had been dropped off earlier that morning said "Steven I will be right back"
Back inside and up in the girl's rooms and after giving Riley the trophy that she had won from the talent show,
Madeline said "I have it and know what to do, we must get busy! We have much to do, and not a lot of time"
Chole said "What do you mean?"
Madeline said "Our costumes for the ball of course!"
Chole said "Costume for the ball?"
Dainelle said "With these spots, never!"

: Madeline explained that Kim give her the idea. while being at Emily school wasn't so bad
Madeline said uh Riley Miss Helen brought us two uniforms new rule we have to dress alike
Riley said great Maddie they will have a hard time tell us apart for sure
Madeline said not Really Riley my uniform is just light red Jacket and your uniform is with no Red Jacket just a headband with butterfly and my Headband is with Tights of course,
Riley nodded and then all 13 girls started working on their new costumes.
: It was the night of the ball, and everyone was there from the Mayor of Paries and his wife. what a pairs to an under manner clown with some flaming red hair, and the Transylvanian count who cause quite a scare. there was hats of all sizes and wigs with long curls but there was still wasn't any trace of the thirteen little girls.
Hannah said "Where can the little girls be, did you hear that Carino?"
Dan said "Surely it is nothing, I will see for myself a bear and tights"

: then more spotted animals leaped from the brush, dogs, cow, and an antelope emerged with a swoosh!
Hannah said "Who are all these creatures?"
: but the animals did not seem quite so tough when the leopard and the tight sample a cream puff.

: and that littles voices give them a sight, that the mystery felines was Riley and Madeline.
Dan said "I believe we have spotted the girls from next door"

Pepito called through his window "I am up here Muchachas, I am up here!"

Hannah said "I will take you to him"
: the twelve girls crowed around Pepito with care and concern, what was ailing Pepito they needed to learn
Hannah said "Steven you already had the chickenpox please take Madeline back to the party. I know she didn't catch them from the girls but I'm not taking any chances."
Steven said "Si mama, come Madeline there is a game we can all play also why don't you introduce me to Kim and Sally as I already know Emily.
Madeline nodded and she and Steven hurried back outside to enjoy the party games with her friends.
Riley said "Pepito why are you in bed?"
: Lit up by the firework while hiding in bed he was coved in spots from his toes to his head.
Riley said "Oh poor Pepito, you have caught the Chicken pox!"
Pepito said "And now you are going to tease me, like I teased you"
Riley said mais non Pepito, we have come to be with our friends"
Pepito said "Go on, you do not want to miss the fireworks and anyway, you might catch it again"

Riley said "And we can see the fireworks right here with you"

As the group of spotted children watched the fireworks from their friend's bedroom,

All of a sudden there was a knock on the door.
Dan entered along with Steven and Madeline,
Dan said "Steven, Madeline follow me please; Riley, Madeline and girls I have something for you"
: with happy smiles and cheery eyes, the ambassador give them first prize.
Dan said "Felicitations Steven, and niñas you have won first prize, you have the best costume at the ball!"
All the girls have won
Dan closed the door and said to Steven and Madeline "Come on you two!"
: Below in the garden the guests steven and Madeline had their fun, but the best party of all had just begun and they stayed with their friend, because that's what friends are for and that all there is isn't anymore.
