Chapter One: When All Goes to Hell
She stared bored as the room turned around her, doors spinning at an alarming rate. The sight was far too familiar to hold her attention for long. It all started to blur as her concentration remained inward. Thoughts swirled around in her head as the cloaked figure next to her suddenly stepped forwards.
"Aresto momentum." The non-descriptive voice uttered, causing the room to come to a sudden stop. She moved lazily after the figure, hiding how ready her body was, the adrenaline flooding her veins. Battle senses tuned to max, as they always were in a public place. The person chose one of the doors and opened it, they didn't bother with holding the door for her, instead they strode forwards assuming she would follow.
Letting out a quiet sigh she rolled her eyes, putting extra swagger into her steps. She knew the exact way to walk to annoy people, she saw how changing her gate had affected her own relatives. She knew that her friends had enough experience with her that they could recognise her emotional state by how she walked. She saw how they prepared themselves for the day ahead when she let herself show it.
The hooded figure turned their head in her direction after walking a couple of steps into the room. She heard the faint sound of teeth grinding together. She tried to hide the delight that filled her in knowing she'd affected the person hidden under the hood. Her mischievous side swam to the surface. "Problem?" She blinked innocently at the cloaked person.
"It's this way." The figure span on their feet and started walking towards the door. But a golden light had caught her attention. Sand was falling in a tank on one side of the room. Odd swirls of golden streaks danced within. Something about it felt familiar.
She cocked her head to the side and couldn't help but step towards the tank. She watched as once all the sand had fallen to the bottom, it started to rise back to the top. Heart in her throat, she felt transfixed. Her heart rate sped up, and the sound of the sand was all she could hear.
"Potter?" She jolted, the sudden voice breaking the sands spell. Slowly she turned her head to see she was in a darkened room. On a nearby table lay a number of broken necklaces with empty hourglasses. She couldn't help her own memory overtaking her.
She was in the infirmary. The setting sun created shadows across the room.
"Come here, quickly!" Her friend urged her closer, she frowned confused as she moved forwards. Hermione was in front of her and fiddling with something that she'd looped around both of their necks. Her eyes got caught on the glint of gold shining brightly. "Here… ready?"
"What?" She looked up into Hermione's brown eyes. "What are we doing?" But instead of answering Hermione gave a grin and turned the hourglass over three times. Hermione's fingers held up the long golden chain necklace and the tiny, sparkling hourglass inside span hypnotically. It twirled as the room blurred. Her eyes got caught on the impossible speed of the tiny grains of sand twirling around the hourglass. She felt herself getting weightless, as if something was affecting the gravity of the room, her clothes lifted up in the air and her curls fluttered in the breeze. The lighting in the room around them changed, making the room a rush of colours and shapes that span around them in a blur. She had the sensation of falling backwards, with her ears pounding and something rushing around them and making her lose her breath.
And then it all stopped.
Everything stood still and she couldn't help but notice how the golden sand now rested on the bottom of the hourglass. "What just happened?" She couldn't help but ask, beyond confused. The ground once again felt solid underneath her feet, the chain digging into the skin of her neck.
"We've gone back in time." Her eyes were drawn back to the necklace as the chain was lifted above her neck and placed back around Hermione's neck. "Three hours back…"
"Potter!" A voice called out. She frowned and looked around the infirmary trying to pin point where it came from but there was no one else in the room.
"Come on." Hermione led them towards the infirmary doors and peeked out into the hallway. Giving the all clear she waved them through. As they walked she couldn't help herself but give her leg a pinch, that ruled out this being a bizarre dream.
"What are we meant to do?" She asked.
"Yes… I think we're going down to Hagrid's." Hermione muttered to herself as she looked out of a window. She walked up next to her friend and looked out of the window and onto the Hogwarts grounds only to see three figures making their way down the hill.
"Are you telling me, that we're here in this hallway and out there, too?" She whispered as she looked at the black-haired figure in disbelief.
"Yes." Hermione nodded and continued walking to the door leading them outside.
"Potter!" She heard again, she scanned the empty hallway in confusion. It must be her imagination, shaking it off she followed her friend outside into the sunshine.
"But what happened? What was that thing?" She asked again. "What did it do and where did you get that hourglass thing?"
"It's called a time turner." Hermione answered. "And I got it from Professor McGonagall on our first day back. I've been using it all year to get to all my lessons. Professor McGonagall made me swear I wouldn't tell anyone. She had to write all sorts of letters to the Ministry of Magic so I could have one. She had to tell them that I was a model student, and that I'd never, ever use it for anything except my studies. I've been turning it back so I could do hours over again, that's how I've been doing several lessons at once, see? But…"
"Potter!" Her surrounding melted away in swirls of grey. Only for another room to took its place.
She gasped and swung her head around in confusion, unsteady on her feet she staggered out and made contact with cold glass. Leaning against it she stared at the hooded figure in front of her.
"What are you doing?" The figure asked form underneath their hood.
"What… where…" She tried to ask. A whirl of memories span in her mind's eye.
"What's it doing?" The figures hood moved and she could tell their eyes were now locked behind her. "How are you doing that?" They asked, frowning she turned her head in confusion to see what her hand was pressed up against.
Her mouth fell open, the sight of the moving sand swirling around her hand pressed against the glass. Golden ribbons twirled in harmony for a moment. All the sand had lifted away from the constant up and down movements. It now appeared to be drawn to her, silence rang around the room.
"What's happening?" She dared to ask, after all shouldn't an employee of the Department of Mysteries know more about the phenomenon happening right now?
But her first words in this room were not answered by the Ministry employee. Instead all the sand suddenly paused. Hanging in the air, her blood rang cold and goosebumps broke out across her skin at the unexpected sight. Suddenly she could sense something was about to happen.
And happen it did.
The sand hurtled at the glass. "Potter! Stop it, get away from there!" The voice shouted, a desperate hand reached out towards her. The magic protecting the glass and keeping the sands within caused shock waved to break out across it. The sands hurtled themselves again and again. She stumbled backwards.
"Why is it doing that?" She asked as winds broke out across the room, caused by the shock waves the sands made.
"You've travelled through time before haven't you?" The figure demanded. "Haven't you?" They stared over at her.
"Yeah, years ago though."
"Merlin be damned." The figure cursed. "Why didn't anyone tell us?" They muttered to themselves, before quickly gesturing over to one of the doors in the room. "We've got to get out. Come on!"
"Where are we going?" She asked as they hurried around tables.
"We're getting you as far away from the sands of time as we can." They replied opening the door. "Who knows what will happen if it gets free."
"Get free?" She turned her head and a bang rang out across the room, the sound of glass breaking and raining down on the floor. Horrified she turned her head to see grains of sand escaping and coming towards her in a storm of glinting gold. The wisps danced in the air, twirling around the sand that rushed towards her. She gasped and years of experience had her body moving before her mind had caught up. The door slammed closed and they heard the sound of sand ricocheting off the door.
"Quickly!" The unspeakable rushed on ahead through the room. She quickly glanced around herself noticing the planets and the glowing pathway where otherwise there was space.
"Okay…" She blinked remembering Ginny describing this room when she'd been here last. She kept her eyes on the path, running after the unspeakable who was almost at the door. She sprinted as she felt the hairs on the back of her neck raise. There was only a moment of realisation that something was about to happen before wisps inched into view. They wiggled in the air, glinting gold in the darkness of space at the edge of her vision. "Fuck." She swore as the sands of time began to circle her in a hurricane. She continued to run, in the vain hope that nothing would happen, that her own brand of luck hadn't struck again. But it was of no use. The sands and wisps span around her, inching closer and closer.
"Potter!" She heard the unspeakable yell from behind the sands of time. She halted in her steps realising she was running towards them, if she got too close maybe they would get trapped too. She could hear the sound of their footsteps getting closer, and knowing that she couldn't bring trouble onto this other person she leapt off the pathway before they could reach her. She floated in the air for a moment. It reminded herself of the freedom of flying, her hair danced around her head. But the moment didn't last forever. She felt herself floating away, turning in the vacuum of space until she didn't know up from down.
And then she crashed into one of the planets, stomach first. Looking down she only had a second to realise the planet she'd somehow found was unmistakably Earth. And then as if in reaction to her crash the sands flew faster in the air. They created a vortex, a swirling windpipe that had her body being pulled through. An odd noise rushed over her, joining in with the sound of rushing sand. "Please don't tell me this is the end of the world." Golden wisps danced around her and she felt herself being tugged forwards.
"Potter!" She heard the desperate cry as gold overtook her vision and took her away.
