(After Faith tells her everything she would need to know about PCOS and pregnancies. She recommends some doctors who specialize in high-risk pregnancies.)
Faith: OK mama how about we take a look and see where we are?
Mariska: (wipes her eyes) Ok.
Shelley: Everything is going to be fine.
Faith: I'm going to go get the ultrasound machine while you undress from the waist down.
Mariska: Ok.
(Faith hands her a sheet and then leaves out to go search for the machine. Mariska moves behind the curtains and undresses leaving her socks on. She then hops back on the bed and sits there feeling like a little girl with her mom in the room.)
Shelley: So, was it this Chris guy?
Mariska: (mouth drop) Mom you can't ask questions like that.
Shelley: What? You can tell me when you are ready but you can't tell me who is the father of my grandchild.
Mariska: It's just weird Mom.
Shelley: (arch an eyebrow) Well you have to tell him. You're not going to raise this child all by yourself.
Mariska: I haven't even heard from him since I got back and that was two months ago.
Shelley: So it is Chris.
Mariska: Yes mother.
Shelley: I can't believe my baby is having a baby.
Mariska: Yes me either. I don't even know how far along I am. How am I going to raise a tiny human being?
Shelley: With lots of love and care.
(She can only nod and sigh as she waits for Faith to come back. They were having small talk when a knock sounded and Faith opened the door.)
Faith: Alright are you ready to see your baby?
Mariska: I don't have much of a choice.
Shelley: Don't be a smart ass dear.
Mariska: Sorry I'm just still trying to process it all.
Faith: It's perfectly fine to feel how you are right now.
(She instructs Mariska to lie back so she could do the ultrasound vaginally since she's early. Mariska hiss a little when she inserts the wand and they all turn towards the monitor.)
Shelley: Would she have to come more since she has PCOS?
Faith: Yes, only because she's high-risk. And here is your baby, everything looks good and the growth is on schedule.
(Mariska covers her mouth as she watches the blob on the screen in awe. Her mom grabs her hand and squeezes it as she looks at her grandchild.)
Mariska: Can you tell me how far along I am?
Faith: Your baby is measuring at around eight weeks. So that would mean the spotting you had was most likely implantation bleeding.
Shelley: So the baby is healthy and there's no sign of any complications?
Faith: Yes, everything looks great and the heartbeat is...
(She stops talking for a minute and looks more closely at the monitor as she moves the wand a little.)
Mariska: (becoming concerned) What is it? Is my baby ok?
Faith: Your babies are fine.
Mariska: (looks confused) What?
Shelley: Oh my.
Mariska: What? I don't see anything.
Faith: That's because baby b is hiding. Take a closer look and you will see two heartbeats and one sac but two babies.
Mariska: Im have twins?
Shelley: (smiles) Yes, you are having two babies.
(Mariska turns pale and it looks like she is going to pass out. The doctor slowly pulls out the wand and turns her attention to Mariska.)
Faith: Woah Mariska take a few deep breaths for me.
Mariska: How am I going to raise two babies? I can barely raise one and now you're telling me that I'm having twins.
Shelley: Breath baby.
Faith: What are you feeling Mariska? All of this is up to you and what you want.
Mariska: (rubs her head) Is he punishing me?
Shelley: No sweetheart. He wouldn't give you anything you can't handle. Babies are a blessing and maybe this is his way of giving you something every doctor told you, you couldn't have.
Mariska: (sigh) I want to go home.
Shelley: OK, we can go home.
Faith: I'll have your next appointment waiting at the front desk and a prescription for prenatal vitamins.
Mariska: OK, is there anything I should look out for?
Faith: Come right back if you start bleeding and it's heavy or doesn't stop. If you are in any pain that doesn't feel right come back. But right now everything looks good and everyone is healthy.
Mariska: Ok.
Shelley: How about you get dressed and we can head home so you can rest.
Mariska: Ok.
(The doctor leaves them as Shelley helps her daughter down and into her bottoms. She kisses Mariska's forehead before she moves her out the door and to her car. Mariska is on autopilot and really not comprehending anything her mother is saying.)
Shelley: Baby are you hungry? I'm sure you are, probably haven't eaten since this morning.
Mariska: Im not hungry just want to get home.
Shelley: Ok.
(She reaches over and rubs her arm before she drives home. Once there Mariska goes straight to her room to shower and get into bed. She was woken up a few hours later by her mom letting her know that dinner was ready. Before she could even say anything she was up and running to her bathroom. She lifts up the lid and drops to her knees dry heaving what little she has in her stomach.)
Mariska: GOD!
Shelley: (rubs her back) Just let it out, baby.
(Mariska gags and coughs as she spits out the vomit and wipes her mouth. She rests her head on the seat as she takes deep breaths to calm her stomach.)
Mariska: That's so gross.
Shelley: Oh this is just the beginning.
Mariska: (groan) I don't think I can do this.
Shelley: Well it's too late to think that now in eight months you're going to have two healthy and happy babies.
(Mariska groans again before she finally gets up off the floor and brush her teeth. She tries to go back to bed but her mom drags her downstairs to the table to eat. She eats a portion of the food before she goes back to her room and falls back to sleep.)
