(A few days went by and surprisingly she was feeling a little better. She went back to work and informed everyone that she was pregnant. Tonight she was going to tell her father and brothers over dinner her mom was preparing.)
(She is outside on the roof of the hospital where she goes to get a piece of mind when she gets the courage to call Chris. It rings and rings with no answer from his cell, so she calls his office phone. As she was about to hang up someone picked up and her breath got caught in her throat.)
Becky: Hello.
Mariska: Umm hi, my name is Mariska and I was trying to get in touch with Chris Meloni.
Becky: I'm sorry but he no longer works here.
Mariska: (shocked) OK umm did he leave a forwarding address or number to be reached?
Becky: No I'm sorry.
Mariska: Ok thank you.
Becky: You're welcome I'm sorry I couldn't help you with what you needed.
Mariska: No it's ok you have a good day.
Becky: You too.
(She hangs up and rests a hand on her still-flat belly. She racks her mind to try and figure out why and where he could have gone. She calls his cell again and leaves a message before she gives up. She makes it home by six and her father and brothers are there with their wives. She says hello before she heads up to take a shower and find loose-fitting clothes to wear. She goes back down and finds her mom in the kitchen putting bread in the oven.)
Mariska: Mom need any help?
Shelley: No I got this, you go rest yourself.
Mariska: (whispers) Mom in pregnancy not handicapped.
Shelley: I am well aware dear, how about you go set the table?
Mariska: Fine.
(She set the table and then brought all the food over as everyone else was outside laughing and talking.)
Shelley: Baby can you go get everyone?
(She walked to the sliding door and yelled for everyone to come eat. Her brothers were the first ones up and making their way inside. They all take a seat at hold hands as her mom says grace, and then they pass the food around.)
Mike: Isn't this nice the whole family is together?
Shelley: (smiles) Yeah it has been a while since we've had everyone here.
Dom: Well Sara and I have some news.
Shelley: (looks at them) No.
Dom: Yeah.
Mariska: What? What is it?
Sara: We're having a baby.
Paul: Oh congratulations guys.
Vicky: Oh my that's wonderful.
Mike: (smiles big) That's great you two. Listen whatever you guys need just ask.
Sara: Oh we couldn't do that.
Shelley: Non sense, this is our grandchild.
Dom: Mom please don't spoil the baby before it even gets here.
(Mariska looks down as she take in her brothers big news. She can feel her mother eyeing her and she wouldn't dare make eye contact.)
Shelley: Someone else also have some good news.
Mariska: (shocked) Mom.
Shelley: What? It's going to be sooner than later.
Mariska: I just don't think now is a good time.
Mike: (look between them) Good time for what?
Paul: (look at his sister) Your dating?
Dom: You killed somebody.
Mariska: No, god why would you even say that?
Paul: Well it must be a boyfriend. What's his name and where does he live?
Mariska: It's not a boyfriend. It's something more permanent and..
Sara: Oh my god you're pregnant.
(Everyone gets quiet and you can hear a rat piss on cotton because everyone stopped breathing. Mariska sit her fork down as she take in her family expressions.)
Mike: Well?
Dom: Damn sis.
Paul: What's his name?
Mariska: Look yes I'm pregnant and no I'm not giving you his name Paul.
(she looks around the table and everyone is mute and just looking at her. Her mom is caressing her dad's arm as the look on his face change from amusement to anger.)
Mike: Who is it?
Mariska: Dad it doesn't matter.
Mike: (stands up) What's his name?
Mariska: His name is Chris and he's the guy I was working with in Kenya.
Mike: (breathing heard) How can you be so stupid?
(She looks up when he said this because he has never talked to her that way.)
Shelley: Michael?
Don: Dad?
Mike: You were suppose to be down there to learn the ropes of being in the medical field not sleeping around.
Mariska: I was not sleeping around daddy. Chris and I had become really close but we both knew that it wasn't going to last.
Mike: So what your 22 years old you should have known better. I'm not paying for you to be out there spreading your legs for any man that looks your way.
(Mariska looks down as she feels her eyes water with tears.)
Shelley: Ok Mike you have gone too far now.
Paul: Dad chill.
Mike: No, who's going to help her raise this baby? She's still in school, how is she going to take care of a baby with no degree. I expected more from you Mariska, this is a got damn disgrace to this family. Have your mother and I taught you nothing, that baby is going to hold you back. You might as well quit school now and go get a job down at the diner because your life is over.
(He looks at her and it's a look she has never seen on her father's face HURT, ANGER, and a look she can't read. Feeling ashamed and in shock that her dad talked to her like that she gets up and run out of the room.)
Shelley: What the hell is wrong with you?
Mike: You knew about this?
Shelley: Yes I knew about it. I was at the hospital when she was told she was pregnant.
Mike: Well how come you didn't tell me?
Shelley: It wasn't mine to tell. How could you talk to her like that. She is your daughter and you just belittled her in front of everyone.
(Shelley gives her husband a look before she turns to go check on her daughter. She reach her door and finds it locked but she could hear her sobbing behind the door. Instead of making her open the door to talk, she decides to give her some time before she turns to deal with her husband.)
Mike: (
