Back at the apartment, the unit gathered around the kitchen table, quietly eating their meal. The atmosphere was heavy with concern for Jay and Kim.
Suddenly, they heard the soft patter of little feet. Emma toddled down the hallway, her eyes wide and filled with confusion. She clutched her teddy bear tightly, looking shaken.
Kevin was the first to notice her. "Hey there, little one," he said softly, crouching down to her level. "What's wrong?"
Emma looked up at him, her lip quivering. "Mama… Dada… argue," she babbled, her voice trembling.
Lindsay's heart ached at the sight. "Oh, sweetie," she said, moving closer to Emma. "It's okay. Sometimes grown-ups have to talk about serious things."
Adam nodded, trying to reassure her. "Your mama and dada love you very much, Emma. They're just having a tough time right now."
Voight, always the steady presence, gave a small smile. "Why don't we get you something to eat, huh? How about some cookies?"
Emma nodded slowly, still looking a bit unsure. Kevin gently picked her up and carried her to the kitchen, where Lindsay handed her a cookie.
As Emma nibbled on her treat, the unit exchanged worried glances. They knew Jay and Kim needed time to work through their pain, but seeing Emma so distressed was hard for all of them.
As the unit sat around the kitchen table, they suddenly heard raised voices coming from upstairs.
Kim and Jay's argument echoed through the apartment, their voices ricocheting off the walls. The tension was palpable.
Emma, who had been nibbling on her cookie, froze. Her eyes widened, and she dropped her teddy bear. A moment later, she let out a piercing shriek and began to cry uncontrollably.
Kevin immediately scooped her up, trying to soothe her. "Shh, it's okay, Emma. It's okay," he whispered, gently rocking her back and forth.
Lindsay rushed over, her face filled with concern. "Emma, sweetie, it's alright. Your mama and dada are just talking loudly. They love you very much."
Adam looked towards the stairs, his heart heavy with worry. "We need to calm her down," he said softly, his voice filled with urgency.
Voight, always the steady presence, stepped in. "Let's take her to the living room. We'll put on some cartoons to distract her," he suggested.
As they moved to the living room, Emma's cries began to subside, though she still clung tightly to Kevin. Lindsay quickly found a children's show on the TV, and the bright colors and cheerful sounds started to capture Emma's attention.
Kevin sat down with Emma on his lap, continuing to comfort her. "See, Emma? Everything's going to be okay," he said softly.
The unit exchanged worried glances, knowing that Jay and Kim had a lot to work through. But for now, their priority was to make sure Emma felt safe and loved.
"We'll be here for them," Voight said quietly, his voice filled with determination. "All of them."
The unit gathered around the dinner table, trying to enjoy their meal. Emma sat in her high chair, happily munching on her food, oblivious to the tension building between her parents.
Jay and Kim sat across from each other, their faces tight with frustration. The argument that had been simmering all day finally boiled over.
"Jay, you can't just shut me out like this!" Kim exclaimed, her voice rising.
Jay clenched his fists, trying to keep his temper in check. "I'm not shutting you out, Kim. I just need some space to think."
Kim's eyes flashed with anger. "Space? You always need space! What about us? What about Emma?"
The rest of the unit exchanged uneasy glances, trying to focus on their food. Kevin, Lindsay, Adam, and Voight all felt the tension in the air.
Jay's voice grew louder. "I'm doing the best I can, Kim! You don't understand the pressure I'm under."
Kim slammed her hand on the table, causing Emma to jump in her high chair. "Don't you dare talk to me about pressure, Jay! You're such a jackass!"
The room fell silent, the harsh words hanging in the air. Emma's eyes widened, and she looked around, sensing the anger and confusion.
Jay's face turned red with anger and hurt. Without another word, he stood up and stormed out of the room, the door slamming behind him.
Kim sat back down, her hands shaking. She looked at Emma, who was now starting to cry, and her heart broke. "I'm sorry, baby," she whispered, reaching out to comfort her daughter.
The unit remained silent, unsure of what to say or do. Voight finally spoke up, his voice calm and steady. "Let's give them some space. We'll take care of Emma."
Lindsay nodded, moving to pick up the crying toddler. "Come here, sweetie. It's okay."
As the unit tried to comfort Emma, Kim buried her face in her hands, feeling the weight of the argument and the pain it caused.
As the unit settled into the living room, they put on a baby show to distract Emma. The bright colors and cheerful sounds filled the room, providing a soothing backdrop to the tense atmosphere.
Kim sat on the edge of the couch, her nerves still frayed from the argument. She bit her nails anxiously, her eyes darting to her phone every few seconds, hoping for a message from Jay.
Lindsay, noticing Kim's distress, moved closer and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "He just needs some time to cool off, Kim. He'll come back," she said softly.
Kim nodded, trying to take comfort in Lindsay's words. "I know. I just hate that Emma had to see all of that."
Kevin, who was sitting with Emma on his lap, looked over and gave Kim a reassuring smile. "She's okay, Kim. Kids are resilient. And we're all here to help."
Emma, now engrossed in the baby show, seemed to have calmed down. She giggled at the antics on the screen, her earlier distress forgotten for the moment.
Voight, always the steady presence, spoke up from his spot near the door. "We'll get through this, Kim. Just take it one step at a time."
Kim took a deep breath, feeling a bit more grounded by the support of her friends. "Thanks, everyone. I really appreciate it."
As the baby show continued to play, the unit did their best to create a calm and supportive environment. Kim kept checking her phone, hoping for a sign that Jay was ready to talk.
In the middle of the night, the apartment was quiet. Emma was sleeping soundly in her crib, her soft breaths the only sound in the room.
The baby show had long since ended, and the unit had retired to their respective rooms, giving Kim and Jay the space they needed.
Kim lay in bed, her mind still racing from the events of the evening. She had finally managed to drift off to sleep when she heard the door to the bedroom creak open.
She blinked her eyes open and saw Jay standing in the doorway, his silhouette illuminated by the hallway light.
Jay's shoulders were slumped, and his face was etched with pain. He took a few hesitant steps into the room before his emotions overwhelmed him. He sank to his knees, his body shaking with silent sobs.
Kim's heart broke at the sight. She quickly got out of bed and rushed to his side, wrapping her arms around him. "Jay," she whispered, her voice filled with concern and love.
Jay clung to her, his tears soaking her shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Kim," he choked out. "I didn't mean for things to get so bad."
Kim held him tightly, her own tears falling freely. "It's okay, Jay. We're going to get through this. Together."
Jay pulled back slightly, looking into her eyes. "I don't know how to fix this," he admitted, his voice trembling.
Kim cupped his face in her hands, her touch gentle and reassuring. "We don't have to have all the answers right now. We just need to take it one step at a time."
Jay nodded, feeling a glimmer of hope in her words. "I love you, Kim. I don't want to lose you."
Kim kissed his forehead, her heart aching with love and determination.
As Jay's sobs began to subside, Kim gently helped him to his feet. "Come on, let's get you cleaned up," she said softly, guiding him towards the bathroom.
Jay followed her, feeling a mix of exhaustion and relief. The bathroom light was soft and warm, casting a gentle glow over the room. Kim turned on the tap, letting the water run until it was warm, and then dampened a washcloth.
"Here," she said, handing him the cloth. "Let's get you feeling a bit better."
Jay took the washcloth and wiped his face, the warm water soothing his tired eyes. Kim stood beside him, her presence a comforting anchor.
As Jay finished, Kim reached for a towel and gently dried his face. "You don't have to carry all of this alone, Jay," she said, her voice filled with compassion. "We're a team, remember?"
Jay nodded, feeling the weight of her words. "I know. I just… I don't want to let you down."
Kim smiled softly, her eyes filled with love. "You could never let me down. We're in this together, no matter what."
Jay took a deep breath, feeling a sense of calm wash over him. "Thank you, Kim. I don't know what I'd do without you."
Kim wrapped her arms around him, holding him close. "You don't have to find out," she whispered. "We're going to get through this, one step at a time."
They stood there for a moment, finding strength in each other's embrace. The warmth of the bathroom and the quiet of the night provided a small sanctuary from the turmoil of the day.
"Let's get some rest," Kim said finally, leading Jay back to the bedroom. "Tomorrow is a new day, and we'll face it together."
As Jay and Kim settled back into bed, the emotional weight of the night still lingered. Jay, feeling a mix of exhaustion and lingering frustration, mumbled under his breath,
"I'm such a jackass."
Kim, hearing his words, gently turned to face him. She placed a soft kiss on his forehead and whispered,
"You're not a jackass, Jay. You're my baby."
Jay looked up at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of gratitude and vulnerability. "I don't deserve you," he said softly.
Kim shook her head, her eyes filled with love and determination. "We deserve each other, Jay. We're a team, and we'll get through this together."
Jay nodded, feeling a sense of comfort in her words. He reached out and took her hand, holding it tightly. "Thank you, Kim. For everything."
Kim smiled, her heart aching with love for him. "Always, Jay. Now, let's get some rest. Tomorrow is a new day."
With Kim's comforting presence beside him, Jay finally began to relax.
In the middle of the night, Jay lay in bed, his mind still restless. He shifted uncomfortably, rubbing his stomach as a wave of nausea washed over him. The beer he had consumed earlier was now taking its toll, and he regretted drinking so much in an attempt to numb his pain.
Kim, sensing his discomfort, stirred beside him. She turned on the bedside lamp and looked at him with concern. "Jay, are you okay?" she asked softly.
Jay shook his head, wincing as another wave of nausea hit him. "I think I drank too much," he admitted, his voice strained.
Kim sat up and gently placed a hand on his forehead. "You don't have a fever, but you look pale. Do you need some water or something to settle your stomach?"
Jay nodded, grateful for her care. "Yeah, water would be good."
Kim got up and went to the kitchen, returning a few moments later with a glass of water and some crackers. "Here, try to sip this slowly," she said, handing him the glass.
Jay took a small sip, the cool water soothing his dry throat. He nibbled on a cracker, hoping it would help settle his stomach.
"Thanks, Kim," he said, his voice filled with gratitude.
Kim sat back down beside him, her eyes filled with concern. "You need to take better care of yourself, Jay. Drinking like that isn't going to help."
Jay nodded, feeling a pang of guilt. "I know. I'm sorry. I just… I didn't know how else to cope."
Kim reached out and took his hand, her touch warm and reassuring. "We'll find better ways to deal with this, together. You don't have to go through it alone."
Jay squeezed her hand, feeling a sense of comfort in her words. "I promise I'll try," he said softly.
Kim smiled, her heart aching with love for him. "That's all I ask. Now, try to get some rest. We'll face tomorrow together."
With Kim's comforting presence beside him, Jay slowly began to relax. He took another sip of water and lay back down.
