Bruce Granger was one to keep his head cool and walk through with meticulous tactics to solve any problems being an archeologist trying to figure out everything by observation and going through archives upon archives to solve the mysteries of the world or strategically planning with the police and BBA to stop the bit beast weapon designed by power hungry maniacs and mad scientist no problem but when it comes to family matters how much he observed and try to figure things out he would still be dumbfounded as ever. Probably because of his eccentric father or his unpredictable son Hiro. He was grateful his younger son was normal to some extent but can be sometimes very whimsical. Or perhaps it was so because most of his time was away from home. He did called them and wrote to them but still wasn't like living a `normal` life and when he did come home from his months long excursions it felt like he was out of his elements just like now.
Bruce sighed and thought of how he got into this situation in the first place.
`OH Yes! Because Hiro thought it would be a good idea! `
Currently he was making breakfast with a certain dual haired boy who he hadn't seen in two years who have grown quite a bit since then but his personality….. he did notice very subtle changes in him but all in all he was still the same quiet boy he remembered. His own younger son nowhere to be seen in the kitchen probably asleep at such an early hour but his elder son Hiro teaching Kai how to crack an egg singe-handed who seem to be glaring at Hiro the whole time his own in the bowl along with the egg-shells.
Yesterday Evening
The G-revolution and the rest of the teams arrived one by one at the resort at Chicago for a vacation and to participate in the exhibition match the BBA has arranged to promote the sport further.
After recovering from jet lag the teams started to prepare for the exhibition match which was to be held after a week. Even though it was just an exhibition match some competitive natured bladders wanted to have all out matches with their rivals. Parents, guardians and coaches came along to enjoy a well-earned holiday and to spend some quality time with their kids and the other adults. Then some big news shocked each and everyone regarding a certain decision Mr. Dickenson had taken for his ward.
For Bruce was or most of them for matter this was a complete shocker
It reminded him of the days where Stanley Dickenson had played every card in his hands to get the boy's custody. Fought tooth and nail for him to get it. And now all of a sudden he just gave it up.
Three years ago in Russia at the world Championships
The bladebreakers, especially thanks to Tyson, had won the championship and after witnessing the weapon now had proof to put Voltaire behind bars for good. Not to mention with Interpol and the police all of them working together they won't be able to escape that easily.
The demolition boys and the rest of the abbey bladders were rescued from Biovolt send to their homes whom they found rest of them would stay at the abbey and under BBA supervision will be reformed in the future.
But when it comes to a certain someone and as to what would happen to him as he was to go back to Japan with them he knew the best option for him was to be in Dickenson's care.
For he couldn't do it himself partially…. Well mostly because he was away for his work which sometimes weigh heavy on his conscience because of many reasons. The nature of his work demanded most of his time but deep down he knew he should get a more reasonable job till his boys grow old enough to handle themselves. He loved his job and enjoyed it not because he was some workaholic who would put his career before his family but because he just couldn't stand being in his house after his wife passed away. Back then he worked at a research lab. Sure the hours were tough but he had a good pay and a normal routine. He had always wanted to go and explore the mysteries of the world and his wife had always encouraged him He had applied for it and had gotten approval letters for him to go out into the world but every time the thought of leaving them all behind, made his change his mind.
Bruce mind took him to few years back in the past.
Tyson was just a couple of years old at that time. A tragedy had befallen them. As to get away for all the pain of the memories and the thought that he would never see her again, he just couldn't take it. Everything in their house reminded of her and he knew if he stayed there he would just be dreaming about his wife and himself together forgetting about everything else around him and neglecting everything. If his father and son hadn't been there to get him through that he didn't know what he would have done. Probably would have stayed in his room looking at her pictures lost in the memories inside his head for hours on the end. He knew he had to go to work and take care of his family but he just couldn't stand going to work and coming back home to the same place that once bring him joy but now crushing agony. He just couldn't stand being in that house again. The once thought about not leaving his family behind faded away as the thought of not going back to their house again cease hold of him. He knew it was selfish of him to leave all of them especially his younger son but he just couldn't take more of this heartache.
He took the job offer for that dig in South Africa.
They say everyone has their own way of grieving. Mine was to distance myself from the things that reminded me of her.
Bruce thought gloomily.
I told myself I was starting anew but really I threw myself in my work to drown out my sorrow. Quiet the hypocrisy huh! I always told myself I would put my family first and here I am doing the exact opposite putting my family behind not for career per say but to run away from all the pain of losing her.
Present
When Mr. Dickenson decided he would take Kai in half of me felt guilty and half of me was relieved. Guilty because I couldn't take in a child that was in need for a guardian who had been manipulated at the hands of his own family but the major part of me felt relieved seeing as I wasn't even taking care of my own child and what would Tyson think if I really did that his own father couldn't care less if he needed him, his own son, but make room for someone else's kid sure. Other will probably think I did it just to redeem myself out of my horrible parenting that after his mother died should have taking much more care of him but instead left him with his grandfather to deal with his grief of losing his mom.
I would have taken him in But the main reason is that I didn't want to because of his rude behavior. Sure he was `trained` at the abbey and so were the rest of the boys but being the grandson of the top dog was sure to give him some extra luxury none of the abbey boys could get, pretty sure none would dare to touch the big boss` boy, cause if they did they would be the one to suffer the wrath of the said tyrant. His match with Spencer was the proof of that. Unlike Tyson and especially Ray they didn't pull any trick to inflict any bodily damage on him.
And after freeing from the clutches of his grandfather he sure didn't seem too warm toward everyone either nor didn't seem to be that grateful of everything they did. Sure he did acknowledged them and he did played a big role in bringing the Biovolt down but what bothered him the most was that he still had that same insolent behavior that he didn't approve of in fact if anything he thought Kai was a bad influence on his son and the other kids.
Yesterday at the grand reunion they all sat down and chat up with each other and told them what they all have been up to. Bruce naturally telling them all about his archeological digs. Taro and Judy told him about the last tournament and the BEGA fiasco which he had seen on TV. After their first encounter with Boris, Bruce was sure Boris would not dare to resurface and try something so reckless but the man was as sly as a fox it seem. After the Biovolt disaster he somehow managed to escape and with the heavy police BOLO remained hidden only to appear in Japan claiming to be a turned man and since Japanese authorities didn't have anything solid on him and with a few bribing he not only had managed to build BEGA right under Mr. Dickenson's nose but before doing that brought down his opposition beforehand. Rising as the unopposed pro beyblading league no one could stop.
Tala and the demolition boys who now go by the team name of Blitzkrieg boys tried to take the league down all by themselves but poor kids ended up in hospital and one in coma no less. He felt bad for these boys having to suffer through all the torment Boris put them through whether in the past or now, but his son Tyson, his amazing that he felt like he had abandoned once again had saved the day once again. But to think his elder son also joined BEGA was something of heart breaking all those efforts he had tried to put Boris and Voltaire behind bars and one of his sons go and joined hands with the enemy. To say he was shocked and disappointed would be an understatement. But he guessed Hiro had his reasons he just had to ask him what and this reunion brought a good opportunity for that. But he always thought Kai would never in a million years go and join up BEGA. And his thoughts about him being spoiled rich brat, doing whatever he wanted without thinking of the consequences, giving people nothing but silent treatment most of the time and when he did talk he treated them as the other people were beneath him not to mention he had formed and had been the leader of a gang, hanging around bunch of other rowdy teens and delinquents. If he had niggling feeling that Kai was a troublemaker before, after hearing about that he joined BEGA he knew he was right about his character.
Catching up with Mr. Dickenson was quiet interesting. First about almost two years ago the PPB had found a rock containing huge number of bit-beasts with an ancient writing over it that may have hold the secret to the mystery of the origin of the said sacred spirits and they hadn't contacted him about it. First he became livid but after knowing that it was stolen he was deflated that he would never get to see it again.
Then there was BBA getting shut down.
But the latest one was the one he did not see coming.
Mr. Dickenson had given Kai's guardianship to someone he knew only for a few months!
And after only two years of his contract remaining. In japan the coming of age is 20 but seeing as he has dual nationality he would become an adult at 18, But the question still remains, Why would he raise the boy for this long and then gave it up so quickly to someone he hadn't even known a full year.
Was he sick?
Was he dying?
Did Kai did something that made him realize he couldn't take care of him anymore. He knew Kai was staying at an all-boys boarding school.
He had kept in contact with Mr. Dickenson whenever he got the chance.
Had Kai gotten into troubling again like that kid when he was first sent there?
Well knowing Kai he did probably did something that made him give up his custody to someone else at this point of the contract.
He just hoped that his new guardian was ready and 'equipped' to handle him.
He didn't know what he would have done had this boy been living under the same roof as him. He had lived with his father but the granger sr. was somewhat of a smack 'em till they get 'em kind of guy. Would beat the living hell outta all of them even if his grandson gave him lip. Bruce smirked at that thought and the memory that one brought.
He sighed and looked at his current predicament.
Temporary guardian of the one and only Kai for the whole day.
The news of Kai's guardianship had spread like wild fire. And brought up many questions to everyone's mind.
Hiro somewhat peeved and at the same time amused by this news asked Stanley as to why he didn't gave him to someone who knew Kai for years to properly discipline him instead gave to someone who would only playing into his hand and let him do whatever he wanted.
Stanley assured them it was only because he was always too busy to even take care of him and since the couple was young and eager and exceptionally capable, he gave his custody to them.
To say Hiro also had the same feelings for Kai as him was no secret he didn't trust him as far as he could throw him. But Hiro also joined BEGA. But he was the coach. Probably joined to keep an eye on Boris to not corrupt any more kids and destroy their lives in the process be right there if Boris did try something fishy and would save them. Keep your enemy closer is what they say. And keeping very close tabs on Boris means anything suspicious and he would go straight to jail. That is what he have been telling himself but still it pains him to think that his son would betray him and joined hands with the enemy instead of holding his brothers in the bleak times.
He still hadn't asked Hiro about his reasons to join BEGA and that left a pretty stale smell in having a proper reunion. They both had greeted on another asked about how their jobs were going which as awkward and to avoid any conflict right in front of everyone they both took themselves away and onto enjoy the vacation with their respective friends. Even though they both knew they should clean the air between them but didn't have it in them just yet to do it.
.
But Kai he didn't understand as to why he would join the enemy again. To battle Tyson. He took his title so he wanted it back. He could do that another year in the next championship. He didn't understand as to what drove boy to join Boris again. Sure in the end he didn't come out of it unscathed. He was still a young boy and it was still just a game part of him thought that's what he deserved which made him guilty for even thinking such a thing.
The hot topic continued to be discussed much to Kai's annoyance, the red head from the Majestics even saying that he thought that Kai was an emancipated minor.
What Hiro said next brought Bruce back from his train of thought back into the room and his words drained all the color from his face.
"How about all the adults take turns to demonstrate that we all can be if not better are capable of handling and disciplining him. Besides the people here all know about his temperament much more than someone who hadn't even known him a full year. I say if one of us can handle him you should gave his custody to them".
His words stopped everyone dead in their tracks.
Kai looked at Hiro like he has just slapped him across the face before it turned into an angry one.
"And just who do you think you are Hiro. Its none of your business so stay out of the matters that have nothing to do with you" deeply annoyed by what Hiro said Kai tried to put Hiro in his place and hopefully bring an end to this uncomfortable topic.
"What's the matter Kai. Don't tell me that the mighty Kai is scared of staying with people who know how to actually handle you and your notorious stunts ones that can get you brand new guardians to live with"
Kai growled at him.
Stunned at first but Stanley stepped in before a full out brawl started out. The hinted sarcasm not going unnoticed as he was aware of Hiro's dislike towards the boy.
He cleared his throat to get their attention.
"As I have stated before that was not the case. But Hiro has a point for not just Kai but for everyone else here. We need chaperons if you boys and girls want to go out the premises of the resort. I suggest all the adults take turns whenever there are plans to go outside. That way there won't be any hiccups. And all of us can enjoy our time spend here." He tried to divert the topic.
"That is all well and good. But seriously I would love to meet the people who so blindly took him from you but what intrigued me the most is why none of you took it." Hiro aimed at all the adults that were now trying not to look him in the eye as most of them seem to shift uncomfortably.
Hiro smirked when none of them gave an answer.
A wooden sword got to him before Kai could.
"Yo! Whats the dealio with the blim blam you layin in out homedog."
To Hiro everything about Kai infuriated him as much as he liked to bring down that haughty attitude of his he was very intrigued as to why one of them had taken his guardianship and he wanted to see with his own eyes as to why.
"But really how much would it hurt to do that." he said while ignoring Grampa.
"Fine how about just one day of being his guardian. All of us will keep tabs on this and the loser has to treat everyone to a hotpot party. Sounds good"
The kids cheered for the potential party. But the rest including Kai didn't look too pleased by this whole turn of events. Was Hiro trying to pull a prank on them? But they had agreed to it most of them reluctantly because if they didn't it would raise the question as to why they wouldn't. The obvious answer would be that they didn't want anything to do with a criminal's grandson but he had helped them to stop him.
The other was his not so nice attitude but wasn't it their job to give a place to him where he would be surrounded by good people and changed himself. But the opposite was also true especially for the younger minds and that is exactly what they didn't wanna have.
But one day wouldn't hurt right after all they would also be taking charge of the others while going out. They agreed on turns so that they would also get to relax and just enjoy their time away from work.
And hence, my turn. Full day with this kid doing what any parent would do with their kids.
Those feelings that this boy should stay away from his family were creeping up like vines climbing from the recess of his mind and taking over it. He just hoped he does not get the best of his nerves. As much as he wanted to like him for the sake of his son's friendship at the same time he wanted him far away from the shadow of his influence that seemingly have seeped into Tyson somehow. His sweet boy sometimes shows hints of arrogance instead of being humble especially when it came to beyblading. It irked him to see that but at the same time he felt sorry for him. All of it was not his fault. What his grandfather chose to do was not his burden to carry. He just wished he became more civilized and acted a bit more politely. He didn't have any family and a member of it was in jail. Never heard nor seen his parents.
He felt more sorry for the abbey boys though. Now they really were stuck between a rock and a steep place if they didn't live in the abbey would die out there in the frosty colds of Russia and if they stay in the abbey they have to suffer the wrath of Boris the bad. If he had to take in anyone he would gladly take in one of the abbey boys but again his work didn't allow that. But this kid he would get all the assets and wealth which Voltaire had built up over the years once he came of age. Didn't have to care about anything in the world unlike those boys.
He put aside those conflicting thoughts and mentally prepares himself as he had one whole day to deal with him. Deep down he just hoped he would disappear like he always did so that he didn't have to deal with him. He sighed for the millionth time and psyched himself to face what the day had in stored for him.
Here we go. One whole day of keeping the kid I wanted away from my family the most now have to keep him in the family.
