Later on that evening, after spending most of the day exploring the new town, the crew returned to their ship. As the crew settled in for the night, Luffy found himself unable to quiet his thoughts. He kept replaying the incident with Aria over and over in his mind, his chest tightening as he remembered how close she'd been to him, how her eyes had looked into his, how it'd felt having her body pressed against his...
He tossed and turned in his bed, frustrated by the conflicting feelings coursing through him. Why was he so rattled by a simple accident? He'd been in close proximity with women before, and it'd never bothered him like this. So why was this time so different?
He sat up in his bunk, running a hand through his already messy hair. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep like this. He needed to do something, anything, to get his mind off the incident. With a sigh, he quietly climbed out of his hammock and snuck out of the men's quarters.
He walked towards the deck of the ship, hoping the cool night air would help clear his head. As he stepped out into the moonlight, he noticed a figure sitting on the deck ahead. It was Aria, her silhouette illuminated by the silver light of the moon.
Luffy hesitated for a moment, surprised to see her up at this hour. He considered turning back, not wanting to disturb her. But something compelled him to stay, to see what she was doing out here alone.
He walked over to where she was sitting, still debating with himself. As he approached, she looked up, and their eyes met. For a moment, they just stared at each other in silence, the only sound the gentle lapping of the sea against the ship's sides.
Aria smiled weakly, breaking the silence. "Can't sleep either?"
Luffy nodded, feeling a bit sheepish. "Yeah, I've just been... Thinking about stuff".
He sat down next to her, keeping a slight distance. The air felt charged between them, filled with unspoken tension.
Aria nodded in understanding. "I know the feeling. I've been having some trouble quieting my mind tonight too."
There was another moment of silence, neither of them quite sure what to say. The moon continued to shine above them, casting a soft glow over the deck.
Luffy shifted uncomfortably next to her, his thoughts still swirling. He couldn't deny that being near her made his heart race and his palms sweaty. He glanced back at her, taking in the way the moonlight made her hair shine and her eyes sparkle.
"I'm sorry." Aria said softly.
Luffy looked at her in confusion. "What are you apologizing for?"
"When I challenged you to that spar earlier, I was just doing it as a joke, but I feel like maybe I upset you. I don't know. Then that exchange between you and Sanji, I couldn't help feel responsible." her words were soft, gentle and sincere.
Luffy's expression softened as he realized what she meant. "Oh, that?" He chuckled. "You got nothing to apologize for. I'm the one who probably got a little too carried away with the fight. And that little scuffle with Sanji, that's nothing new."
He smiled, trying to lighten the mood. "Besides, you definitely taught me a thing or two during our duel."
Aria smiled back, a little relieved he wasn't angry. "You weren't too bad yourself."
A moment of silence fell between them as they both looked out onto the open sea. The stars were especially bright tonight, the cool breeze tousling their hair.
Luffy glanced at her again, the silence growing a little awkward. He had a question that was nagging at the back of his mind, and before he could stop himself, he blurted it out. "Hey, can I ask you something?"
Aria looked at him, wondering what it was he wanted to ask. "Sure".
Luffy took a deep breath, trying to calm his beating heart. He had a feeling the question he was about to ask might change things between them. "It's just...I need to know why you challenged me to that duel earlier. Was it really just a joke?"
"Well yeah. I know I could never actually defeat you in a real duel. You're a million times stronger than me. I just thought it would be funny, you know? We're always playing and joking around together. I thought it would be a lighthearted thing. I hope it didn't make you uncomfortable..." she sounded almost regretful, like maybe she'd done something wrong.
Luffy's heart skipped a beat at her words. The playful bantering they always did together, the thought that she enjoyed spending time with him... it all made that strange feeling he'd been having lately even stronger. However, Luffy did his best to remain calm. "It didn't make me uncomfortable. I guess I just wasn't expecting it, that's all."
"Oh... well, that's good." she said, a smile of relief washing across her face.
Luffy looked back at her, his heart rate picking up again. He knew there was one more question he needed to ask, but he was terrified of the answer. "Aria, can I ask you something else?"
"Of course." she said, speaking softly. She knew that when he asked that, it was usually followed by a deep or even personal question.
Luffy took a deep breath, steeling himself. He had to know. "That moment we had, when you accidentally fell into me during our fight...was it just a mistake, or did you do it on purpose?"
"What do you mean? When we both fell into each other?" she chuckled, still feeling awkward and embarrassed over the whole thing.
Luffy nodded, his eyes locked onto hers. "Yeah, when we fell on top of each other." He had a feeling he knew the answer already, but he needed to hear her say it out loud, to confirm the thoughts swirling in his head for weeks.
"I didn't mean for us to crash into each other, if that's what you're asking." Aria clarified. It was genuinely an accident on both of their part, really.
Luffy studied her face, looking for any hint of deception. He couldn't detect any, and her words seemed sincere. He relaxed, slightly, but there was still something gnawing at him. "So...you didn't do it on purpose?"
"No." she said in a soft voice, a soft chuckle escaping her lips.
Luffy nodded, his heart strangely both lighter and heavier. A part of him felt relieved that it had been a genuine accident, that she hadn't intended to get that close to him. But another part of him, the more confusing part, felt disappointed, like he had hoped she had done it deliberately. He knew it was irrational, that he was being ridiculous, but the feeling persisted.
He didn't know how to respond, what to say in that moment. The strange tension between them felt like it was about to snap.
The gentle sea breeze blew through their hair while the stars twinkled above. Aria could sense something was up but was too nervous to ask. Instead, she sat there and looked out into the ocean. She smiled suddenly, a playful look in her eye. Suddenly and unexpectedly, she poked his ribs in an attempt to tickle him and break the tension between them.
His eyes widened in surprise at the sudden jab to his ribs. He instinctively flinched away, letting out a surprised laugh. "Hey, what was that for?" he asked, trying to sound indignant but failing with the smile that broke out on his face.
"Payback, for a week ago when you tried to wake me up by ticking me! I never did get you back for that you know." she said with a smile.
Luffy chuckled, his heart lightening with the return of their familiar playful banter. He rubbed his side where she'd poked him, pretending to pout. "You still holding a grudge over that?"
"No, not really." she laughed. She always found his fake pouting adorable. He could be such a child, and while it seemed to annoy their other crew mates, Aria found it endearing. She felt very protective of Luffy, treasuring the little moments they shared like this.
Luffy's pout quickly melted into a grin. He loved their back-and-forth banter, their playfulness. It was a welcome distraction from the confusing emotions swirling inside of him whenever he was around her lately.
He nudged her gently with his shoulder, his smile turning into a cheeky smirk. "You know, I could always start tickling you again. Then we'd be even."
"No!" Aria said, sharply but with a hint of playfulness behind it. "Don't you dare."
Luffy chuckled, his eyes sparkling with mischief. He couldn't help but tease her a little, enjoying the way she reacted. "What's the matter? Afraid you can't handle a little tickle attack?" he teased, lightly moving his fingers towards her ribs.
"Pft, please. We all know it's you who's the ticklish one." she laughed.
Zoro, who was believed to be napping, observed from the distance.
Luffy scoffed, trying to play it off even though he knew she was right. "Me? Ticklish? Pfft, what are you talking about?" he said, doing a very bad job of concealing the fact that he was, indeed, very ticklish.
Zoro smirked from his hiding spot, seeing the interaction play out before him.
"Oh, you know, like when I do this!" she said, her hands aiming for his ribs.
Luffy let out a surprised laugh as her fingers found his ticklish spots. He immediately tried to squirm away, unable to stop the giggles that escaped him. "Hey! Cut it out!" he spluttered between laughs, batting her hands away weakly.
Aria continued to tickle him, her smile wide as she enjoyed getting him to laugh. Zoro's smirk only grew wider as he continued to watch the spectacle unfolding before him.
Luffy struggled to control the laughter that was bubbling up inside of him. He squirmed and twisted, trying desperately to escape her relentless tickling. He managed to get out a breathless gasp between fits of giggling. "Please...stop... I can't take it anymore!"
Aria stopped, a playful smirk on her face. "Okay, but only because you're the captain and I have to follow your orders."
Luffy let out a relieved gasp, trying to catch his breath. He gave her a half-hearted glare. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" he said, still breathless from laughing so much.
"Very much so." she admitted, smirking.
Luffy playfully pouted, pretending to be annoyed. "You're mean, you know that?" he said, jabbing his finger at her. But there was no anger behind his words, only mild annoyance mixed with affection.
Zoro had been quietly watching the whole scene unfold, his smirk never leaving his face. He saw how the two interacted, how playful and easy they were with each other. He could tell there was something more than just friendship between them, a connection that neither of them had fully realized yet.
He rolled his eyes at Luffy's protests, knowing full well that Luffy wasn't really annoyed. As he watched them, he mused to himself. "Those two... They're oblivious as hell..." He chuckled softly, shaking his head. He was looking forward to how this was going to play out, knowing that Luffy and Aria had a long road of realization ahead of them. As he continued to watch, he heard Nami call out his name. He looked up to see her standing a few feet away, a concerned look on her face.
Nami approached him, her eyes narrowed. "What are you doing?" she asked, eyeing him suspiciously.
Zoro smirked, tilting his head towards the scene in front of them. "Just enjoying the show."
Nami followed his gaze, seeing Luffy and Aria laughing and talking. A knowing smile played on her lips. "Ah, I see. They never seem to realize what's right in front of them, do they?"
Zoro shook his head, his smile widening. "No, they don't. It's almost painful to watch sometimes. But it's also amusing."
Nami let out a soft laugh, nodding in agreement. "You're right. It's like watching two clueless teenagers in love. Although it's more like one clueless teenager and one slightly less clueless teenager."
Zoro chuckled, tilting his head thoughtfully. "Yeah, you're right. I wonder how long it will take them to finally figure it out."
Nami shrugged, watching as Luffy made a particularly dumb comment that made Aria laugh even more. "With Luffy being the one in the dark, probably forever."
Zoro laughed. "That's true. He's oblivious to pretty much everything but food. But he's got that weird chemistry with her - the way they're always playing and teasing each other..."
Nami nodded, her smile turning almost fond. "Yeah, it's cute in a way. They're just so comfortable with each other. But they both need a good nudge in the right direction, especially Luffy."
Zoro smirked again, folding his arms. "We should put money on it. How long do you think it will take for them to figure it out? I say at least another month or two."
Nami pursed her lips, considering the bet. "Hmm, I don't know. They're both pretty thick-headed. Maybe even longer than that. I say six months, at least."
Zoro chuckled, extending his hand. "Alright, you're on. Loser buys the winner a bottle of nice sake."
Nami shook his hand, agreeing to the bet. "Deal. I'm looking forward to my free sake."
Zoro smirked, his eyes still on the oblivious pair in the distance. "We'll see about that. I'm feeling lucky."
Nami chuckled, then turned to walk away, but not before shooting Zoro a knowing smile. "Don't be too confident, we both know they're both painfully slow when it comes to emotions."
Zoro smirked back. "True, but sometimes a little push in the right direction is all they need."
Back to Luffy and Aria. Her eyes lit up suddenly in remembrance, a wide grin across her face. "Ohh! I totally almost forgot!"
Luffy tilted his head, curious. "Forgot what?"
"I have something to show you!" she said, excitement in her voice.
Luffy's interest was piqued. He loved surprises, especially from Aria. "Really? What is it?"
She chuckled. "Wait right here for a minute, okay?"
Luffy's curiosity was killing him but he nodded obediently. "Okay, I'll wait right here."
Aria rushed away, returning moments later with a shopping bag from one of the shops she visited with Nami and Robin earlier that day.
Luffy's eyes widened with curiosity when he saw the bag. "Ooh, what's in the bag?" he asked, practically bouncing on his toes like an excited little kid.
"Before I show you... promise me you won't laugh or be weirded out or anything." Aria said, a hint of redness in her cheeks.
Luffy raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued now. "Pfft, why would I laugh or be weirded out?" he asked, rolling his eyes. "I'm not that easily shocked. But fine, I promise I won't laugh or be weirded out."
She sighs, relieved, still excited to show him what she bought that day. "Okay, close your eyes."
A small pout formed on Luffy's lips. He didn't understand why he needed to close his eyes, but he obeyed, closing his brown eyes tightly. "Alright, my eyes are closed. Now what?" he asked, his curiosity growing stronger by the second.
A moment later, Aria says, the excitement still shining through in her voice. "Okay, now open."
Luffy opened his eyes, and his jaw dropped as he saw Aria sporting a straw hat. She had a slightly awkward smile on her face, while a huge, goofy grin spread across Luffy's.
"You're wearing a straw hat!" he exclaimed, clearly delighted by the sight in front of him. He stepped closer to her to get a better look. He gently picked up the hat, examining it. "Where'd you get it?"
"I bought it at one of the shops I went to today with Nami and Robin." Her smile was a bit sheepish. "Am I totally lame?"
Luffy shook his head, still grinning. He could never find her lame, especially when she was doing something that resembled him. "Nah, you're not lame. But if anything, you're copying my style." he teased, poking her forehead playfully.
Aria playfully batted his hand away, her cheeks turning slightly pink. "Hey, it's not copying if I do it better." she teased back, striking a mock-confident pose.
Luffy laughed. "Is that so? Think you can pull off a straw hat better than me?" he challenged, putting his hands on his hips and puffing out his chest.
Aria chuckled, mirroring his pose. "Oh, I know I can, captain. I look way better in this hat than you ever have." she retorted playfully.
Luffy's eyes widened in mock shock. "Oh, really? You dare to question my straw hat supremacy?" he gasped, feigning offense.
Aria smirked, enjoying how their playful banter was going. She loved when they teased each other like this. "Oh, I can take your straw hat supremacy and raise you the fact that I look pretty cute in this hat, too." she replied, sticking her tongue out at him.
Luffy pretended to pout for a moment before his smirk returned. "Okay, maybe you do look pretty cute in that hat..." he admitted, a hint of affection in his voice. "But I'll always be the OG straw hat master."
Aria laughed, enjoying his competitive spirit. She leaned closer to him, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "We'll see about that, captain. I might just end up stealing your title as the straw hat king."
Luffy's smile widened. He liked her playful confidence. He leaned in closer as well, their faces now only a few inches apart. "Oh, you think you have a chance?" he challenged, his eyes locked with hers.
Aria chuckled, her heart rate picking up at how close they were. She could feel the spark between them, a mix of playfulness and something more. She decided to push it further, her eyes dancing with mischief. "I don't just think I have a chance...I think I'm about to steal the crown right off your head."
Luffy's heart skipped a beat at her words, the tension between them growing even stronger. The air felt thick with electricity, their banter taking on a new level of flirtation. "Is that so?" he responded, his voice a touch huskier than usual. He was playing into her tease, enjoying the game. "You think you can take my crown, huh?"
Aria's heart raced, her cheeks flushed at the huskiness in his voice. She was enjoying this, their banter turning more and more flirtatious. She took a step closer, their bodies almost touching now. She leaned in even closer, her voice barely above a whisper. Her breath brushed his ear as she spoke, sending shivers down his spine. "Oh, I don't just think I can. I know I can."
The crew, having witnessed this interaction from a distance, couldn't help but smile at the scene unfolding before them. They knew there was something different about the way Luffy and Aria were talking. Nami and Robin exchanged knowing glances, their suspicions about the potential feelings growing between the two.
Zoro smirked, enjoying the show. He silently made a mental note to tease Luffy about this later.
Usopp chuckled, recognizing the signs of a possible blossoming romance. He looked at the others, his eyes reflecting a bit of surprise, but also joy.
Chopper, being as observant as he was, picked up on the subtle hints of flirtation and watched the two intently, his eyes wide.
Brook chuckled, the tone of the interaction not lost on him either. He hummed in amusement, thinking it was about time.
Franky chuckled as well, a knowing smile on his lips. He could see the underlying tension in their banter, even if they themselves might not yet be aware.
Jinbe smiled faintly, his observation skills keenly picking up the chemistry between the two. He didn't say anything, silently watching.
As the crew watched, Luffy and Aria continued their playful banter, oblivious to the watchful eyes. The conversation stayed light-hearted and friendly, their banter taking on a childish and innocent quality as well, even if there was a hint of flirtation in the air.
Luffy and Aria were completely absorbed in each other, their conversation flowing easily as they teased and bantered back and forth, the crew silently observing from a distance. The chemistry between them was undeniable, even if they weren't fully aware of it themselves yet.
Nami chuckled, seeing how completely engrossed they were in their playful banter. "They're adorably dense, aren't they?" she whispered to the others, a hint of amusement and affection in her voice.
Zoro smirked, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, it almost physically pains me how clueless they both are." he replied, shaking his head in mock sympathy.
Usopp chuckled. "They really are oblivious, aren't they? But it's cute in a way." he said, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
Chopper giggled, nodding. "Yeah, they're like love-sick puppies, completely smitten but don't even realize it."
Robin chuckled softly, her eyes watching the pair intently. "Young love, it's a beautiful thing. Even when they don't know it yet."
