"Attacus, was it?" They ask. "Ah, yes. She's always fretting about you, ever since I brought her here."
"Where is she?" I demand.
"With me."
"And where are you?"
A condescending chuckle. "I can't tell you that," they chided. "You'll have to find her by yourself if you want to see her."
"What do you have to do with my sister?"
"She's very… useful. You see, she has this condition. It would be simply marvellous if we could use her for testing." They circle around me, eyeing every single part of me. "Don't worry."
'Don't worry.'
They just come in like, 'Hey, there, buddy! We stole your sister and are currently doing possibly fatal tests on her to torture her! Don't worry, It won't affect you!'
Well.
"I- You're sick, you know that?" I snarl. "I will get Lachia back. Mark. My. Words."
"Oh, don't be so sure," they said. "After all, we want to use her to her maximum extent. That means no family visits, no distractions, and no leaving. You got that?"
"Hey! I-"
"Okay, good. Bye now!"
Their image disappears and the darkness folds back into the calm Nothing I'm used to seeing. I remember describing it to Lachia. "What's it like to not see anything? Is it pitch black all the time?" She asked. "What do you see?"
"Nothing," I say calmly.
"I know, but what does that nothing look like?"
"Lachia. I know colours. I don't see pitch black. I refer to it as Darkness because it's closer to that than bright lights everywhere I go."
"Define."
"Sure. Look straight ahead of you and make sure you can't see anything behind you."
"Uh huh."
"You know how you see everything in front of you?"
"Yeah."
"It's kind of like if you tried to see behind you by sticking out your foot. You don't see black. You don't see green. You simply don't see anything."
Silence.
"I never thought about it that way," Lachia mused.
Now she's gone. For now, anyway. I will never, never let her get taken away that easily.
The prior feeling of cluddedness fades away as I'm dropped back into reality. I'm still in the tunnels and Khapra is in front of me.
"Lachia," I choke. I hear the silence coming from Khapra and feel the tension in the air as she's left in pure shock. "I know where she is." I'm not even controlling my own mouth anymore. It all tumbles out of me — too fast to control. I don't even remember what I say even after I say it. Just the last words:
"Lachia's not okay."
