"Well, Mittens, it's been a long day today, but now it's time for bed!" Ella lifted her cat up and kissed him on the head before setting him back down and heading to her bedroom. She discarded her day clothes to put her nightgown on, but her skirt had landed on Mittens, stopping her in the middle of changing.
"Meow?" He questioned as he poked his head out of it.
The singer just giggled as she removed it. "Oh, don't worry about that, little boy! I'm sorry about that, but as they say, curiosity killed the cat, you know, so mind your wandering eye!" She finished putting her pajamas on and crawled into bed. "Sweet dreams, kitty!"
Before long, she found herself sleeping peacefully. With some quiet and calm breathing, there was now a dream bubble above her head, which the camera panned into. Inside of the dream, there were many holes inside of a large dirt room.
"Oh, Mr. Rabbit, where did you go?" She exclaimed. Ella was wearing a baby blue dolly dress, and had bright pink painted cheeks. She was also wearing some jet black mary jane shoes, looking almost toy-like. The rabbit poked its head out of one of the tunnels, squeaked, and wiggled its nose, like it was asking the princess to follow it.
"There you are! Where are we going then?" She ran after it, and she soon was in a field with the bunny. It kept running towards a carrot farm, wanting to be fed some. "Goodness, you're quite fast, aha!"
However, on the way there, Ella fell into a hole that she didn't see, which was just big enough for the rabbit to jump over and see her do so. She screamed on her way down and eventually fell flat on her rear. She looked around the area and saw many familiar things, including… herself? There she was, still sleeping away, even though she was also down on the floor. She was now wearing her nightgown, like her real self was, and there was still a dream bubble above her head, even though she was now not dreaming anymore…
"Hmm… Oh, that must be what Mittens is dreaming about!" The subconscious, small singer jumped up, grabbed the side of her bed, and kicked her way up. She saw Mittens sleeping directly on top of her back, in exactly the same pose she was in. She giggled. "Like mother, like son!"
She hopped into her cat's dream cloud, and as she did, she found herself in a rather sophisticated library with more books than Ella could count. She marveled at the variety of it all - there were some dictionaries, joke books, academic help books, and even some fairy tales! The place wasn't entirely neat, so someone must have been doing something in here.
Nearby, there was a pile of books on top of the table with one blue one knocked over and opened to the side of the stack. Ella approached to see Mittens himself simply resting on top of the pile, making the princess giggle. "It's so adorable to watch him sleep, even when he already is." She closed her hands and tilted her head against them.
Just then, Mittens awoke, revealing a grandfatherly body, and a large robe. "Who has awoken me from my slumber?" He then looked down to see Ella. "Oh, why, hello, my dear."
"Oh, Mittens! You know how to talk now?"
"Reality can be bent to the dreamer's will if they so wish and understand the power they have to control them."
"Hmm? What does that mean?" The girl looked up to her cat with a curious expression.
"Come, owner. There is much to discuss." He led the singer over to a chair and wordlessly told her to take a seat, which she did.
"For ages, dreams have been thought of as transportation to other worlds, in simpler terms." The cat picked up a book and read an excerpt from it. "Emily Dickinson once wrote; 'Let me not mar that perfect dream by auroral stain, but so adjust my daily night that it may come again.' when she was alive."
"Oh, that's truly quite interesting! But, ah, who is that, and what did she mean?"
Her cat dismissed the question. "Here's one you may know instead." Mittens flipped through a few pages in the book. "'There was once a man in Peru, who dreamed he was eating his shoe. He woke with a fright in the middle of the night to find that his dream had come true.'"
Ella giggled. "Wow, Mittens, you sure are a smart little boy! Plenty of good rest and brain food must help with that."
"Did you expect anything less?" The cat would have smirked if he could have.
"Well, I have seen you run into a wall a few times when you play with your toys…"
"The thrill of the hunt does get to us felines at times."
"I suppose. I do feel bad when it happens. I should probably get back to my own dream, but, ah, enjoy yours!" As the princess motioned to jump out of the dream cloud, Mittens shouted to her.
"Beware of your wandering eye, young princess!"
"My, that was quite interesting! I suppose I should get back to bed now." Ella grabbed the side of her blanket and made her way underneath it, but she heard some loud snoring coming from Owen's room of the apartment. Some further curiosity got to her.
Being careful not to catch her nightgown on anything, she slipped underneath her door and ran across the hallway to do the same to her neighbor's. She jumped into the food lover's dream cloud, only to be met with tons of food all over the place. It ranged from trees made out of lollipops, to puddles full of gelatin, vanilla ice cream raining down in one specific place, a huge wall of cheese, and even Ella's pajamas had turned into granola! It was crumbling a little bit, but as long as she walked around carefully, she should end up being okay.
Suddenly, the princess heard some loud eating noises, and through the wall of cheese, Owen poked his head out. "Oh, hey, Ella!" He greeted, with his mouth still full. He swallowed. "It's an awesome place here! Just watch out for the puddles!"
Ella almost stepped in one of the gelatin puddles, but she barely sidestepped it. Looking inside of it, there were two boot-shaped tortillas, which Owen must have been wearing until accidentally stepping in it.
The big guy then jumped off of the cheese wall, landing right in a giant cup of soda. "WOOHOO!" He exclaimed, as the wave of the liquid splashed onto Ella.
"Oh, goodness! Owen, the- the granola! It's-" The singer then realized that it was no cause for concern. "It's sticking to my body? Oh, okay! Hello!"
She then walked up to her friend. "So this is what you dream about?"
"Yeah! Sometimes, I just lay down and can think about anything and it happens! This isn't one of those, but the best part about food dreams is that you never get full!"
"I suppose so! Well, ah, there's not much for me to do here, so perhaps I'll see what everyone else is dreaming about! Enjoy your dream!"
"Okay, see ya!" Owen tried to eat a cookie, but it slipped out of his hand and fell in the puddle where his boots had been. "Aww, that was my last one!"
The singer was already gone, so she didn't witness this. After she left, her nightgown swapped back to its normal state, causing her to breathe a sigh of relief. She looked to her left and remembered Noah's apartment, right in between hers and Owen's.
"You know, I truly don't know that much about Noah! Perhaps I could learn more about him through a dream."
Ella made her way into the bookworm's unconscious thoughts, and she was now in something that looked exactly like it would take place in a detective movie. Everything was either gray, black, or white, and it was a simple run of the mill house.
Despite that, there seemed to be nothing going on. She tried to call Noah's name, but nothing happened. She looked down at her mouth and covered it in shock. She kept walking, only to see the know-it-all sitting in a chair. She waved to him and again tried to say something.
"Hello!" flashed on-screen in a gray box with white text like an old silent movie. Noah still did not react to her wave, though, so she danced around to try to get something to happen in this cold, dark world.
As she did so, a trail of pink followed the princess, adding a splash of color to the monochrome. She clapped in joy as she witnessed this, causing some sparkles to fall onto the ground.
The world filled itself with more and more color as Ella found many things to enjoy with the nothing she had in the world. Lots of books were around, which she expected, and while none were ones she would immediately select, she at least understood how they could be enjoyable! There was also a dog nearby, which she tried to gush over until remembering she could not talk, but she still went to pet it behind its ears.
Eventually, as the area began to return to its normal self, or at the very least become its normal self - Ella wasn't sure - she noticed that she was in a log cabin. It was quite cozy-looking, despite how little there was to do in it. She admired the area proudly as she realized what she had done.
With nothing left to fix within the area, the singer went to exit Noah's dream. The camera panned over to the bookworm himself, though. While he seemed slightly annoyed and bothered by the sudden change, he didn't react besides merely looking back and forth.
It was fun to see what Ella's friends were up to - or well, sleeping to - in their dreams, and she didn't want that to stop quite yet. "Sky's home is a tad farther away… but she still lives somewhat nearby, right?" Ella pondered as she saw a dream cloud above a house, which featured somebody on a helicopter, who was about to skydive.
She started running to it as usual, with it taking longer because of how far away the athlete's house was. Once she got there, she hopped into the dream cloud as normal and found herself on the same flying device, her nightgown and hair aggressively flapping in the wind. Sky herself was right next to the singer.
"Ella!" The olympian shouted, barely audible over the propellers. "What brings you here?!"
"Um, I'm not quite sure! What are we doing up here though?!"
"Well, we won't be up here for long! We're about to skydive and hit that target down there!"
"Hmm? Why?!"
"It's a way to test your precision and ability to work under pressure!
"I see, but goodness, isn't that just a bit-" Before Ella could finish that sentence, the helicopter tilted and threw both girls off it. "-dangerous?!"
"Not with a parachute!" Sky confidently claimed, making the princess adjust her shoes so they didn't slip off.
"Okay! Are these fine?"
"No, not a pair of shoes! A parachute!"
"Oh, my bad! Well, they are cute!" Ella now had two green parakeets slowing her fall.
"I didn't mean a parakeet! I meant a para-" Sky failed to deploy her chute at all, causing her to land in an ambulance. "-medic…"
The two birds had disappeared, causing Ella to scream as she burst through the target. Again, the songbird fell on her backside as she fell out of the dream cloud.
"Oh dear, poor Sky… Thank goodness that was only a dream, or else she could have been hurt much worse!" She aimlessly wandered, taking her way home from work, and remembered that Sammy's home was on the path.
With her curiosity still not quite sated, she hopped up into her girlfriend's dream cloud. Inside of the area, it was an empty park around the time it was in the real world - likely around 11 PM, as Ella had been traveling dreams for a bit now. It was quite a rainy night, and streetlights lit up the path. The cheerleader herself was on a bench, scrolling through her phone. She looked quite happy.
The princess's face lit up in joy as she went to sit next to her.
"Oh! Ella! Uh, hi!" The twin greeted. "I-I didn't expect you to get here so soon." She giggled. "I guess you got my text."
Sammy seemed to ignore that Ella was in her pajamas - likely because this was a dream, somewhere you often don't question things. "Why, yes, I did! I simply happened to be in the area when you texted me." The singer claimed. "I'm always willing to spend some time with you."
The twin laughed lightly. "Yeah. This is… kinda like when you invited me to prom that one day. I couldn't wrap my head around why you did that, but three years later… I don't regret it at all."
"Well, a better question would be why I wouldn't do that, aha! I could tell that you needed someone to be your friend in a time of need. A girl as nice as you shouldn't have had to feel so alone."
"Doesn't that… fit you better?"
Ella paused and scratched her neck. "Well, perhaps just a bit, but you also fit that description. How shy you were before was adorable, and seeing how much you've grown because of me makes me so proud of you- no, of us! Before, you used to blush when you would even look at me." She giggled.
"W-well, yeah, but that's because you were cute! Wait, no, you are cute still! I-I mean-" Sammy sighed in annoyance at herself. "I wasn't used to being around people that are as cute as you. I've always admired you, even before we started talking. You were the first one who didn't call me 'Samey.' You've got such a way with animals so they love you as much as you love them, and your musical skill has always been so impressive. I… don't feel like I'm as impressive as you, even today."
"Oh, don't say that, silly!" The singer mutually hugged her lover, shielding her head from the incoming rain by letting it land in her own hair. "You have plenty of your own accomplishments. You're very physically strong and know what things may be dangerous. Meanwhile, I never have that much awareness!"
Sammy laughed as she realized how right the princess was, recalling the many occasions she'd been called to get a jar open for her. She always accepted, just to spend a little more time with her. "I guess you're right."
There was a short silence as they enjoyed the warmth of each other's arms until one of them spoke up. "I-I just hope you know that…" The cheerleader held back her tears, though they weren't of sadness. "I-I'll be with you even in the darkest of times, Ella."
"Aww!" The singer gushed as she kissed Sammy on the lips, her heart melting into a puddle.
The next thing Ella knew, she was back on her bed, with Mittens on her back. Her bird chirping alarm went off, causing her to blink in confusion before remembering where she was. Most of her memory of the previous night was quite foggy, but she recalled nearly everything about her "time" with Sammy.
She got up, stretched, and found her phone. "I just had the sweetest little dream last night! You and I were discussing our past in the rain and shared a perfect kiss! It felt so real! I love you so much, Sammy!" There was a heart emoji next to that.
It wasn't long before she got a reply. "That's weird… I had almost the exact same dream."
"Oh, how romantic! Lovers having the same dream sounds like a sign of closeness to me! Perhaps it was real after all…"
A/N: There was initially a plan for a mythology gag here, with Chris running his own game show in his dream. However, we realized that Ella does not know where Chris lives at the moment, so we scrapped it. As usual, we hope you enjoyed the chapter.
