As the evening approached, Lily continued to manage her own and what she came to learn were the Head Boy's duties. She was seriously shocked at how many more people approached her as James than she normally would have been as her regular old self. Here she she thought she was the go-to person for heart-to-hearts. However these encounters also definitely had a different flavour to them than the ones she was usually approached with.

She wasn't quite sure what to attribute this to. Was she that unapproachable? Or was James just naturally more charismatic and people gravitated toward him? Was this a blood status issue again? By the time dinner rolled around, she felt more confident in her temporary role, though she was eager for James to be back on his feet and preferably back in his own body.

Lily always griped about her workload and how James seemingly got nothing done, but this one evening showed her that somehow, somewhere along the way he did manage to get a lot done. Their methods were definitely different, but she assumed that many of these seemingly inconsequential asks for his opinion would have snowballed into real issues had he not gone around calming tensions left and right. He has no reprieve even at the dinner table, where Lily usually hid behind a book or friendly conversation to deter intruders on her private time.

She returned to the Hospital Wing just as James was finishing his last round of potions. Madam Pomfrey was giving him a final once-over, nodding in approval.

"You're free to go, Miss Evans. Just take it easy and make sure you rest tonight," she instructed.

"Thank you, Madam Pomfrey," James said, his voice sounding tired but grateful.

Lily and James exchanged a look, and with a nod from the matron, they left the Hospital Wing together.

"Feeling any better?" Lily asked as they walked down the corridor.

"A bit," James admitted. "Still not great, but at least I'm out of there. Also no more sneezing. Do you always sneeze so much?"

"Good. Let's head back to the common room and regroup with Remus," Lily suggested, not deigning to answer the last part. "We need to go over the plan and see if there's anything else we can do."

Back in the common room, Remus was waiting for them in a quiet corner. He looked up as they approached, giving them a reassuring smile. Sirius and Peter were blissfully still at dinner, so they couldn't second guess why Lily was joining their corner.

"Everything go alright?" he asked.

"Yeah," James said, sinking into a chair. "Just glad to be out of the Hospital Wing."

Lily nodded. "Okay, here's the plan: we'll head back to the prefect's office tonight and take another look at that clock. We need to make sure we understand the inscription fully and see if there are any other clues we missed."

"Agreed," James said, looking determined despite his exhaustion. "Let's get this sorted out and get back to normal. I love you, Lily, but—and don't take this the wrong way—I can't wait to be back in my own body."

"Trust me, the feeling is mutual," Lily replied, not realizing she implicitly agreed to more than just the desire to regain her female self.

Once inside the prefect's office, they headed straight for the grandfather clock. Lily carefully examined the inscription again, running her fingers over the engraved words.

"There has to be more to this," she murmured. "Maybe there's a hidden mechanism or a spell we haven't noticed."

Remus joined her, looking over the clock. "We need to think like a Marauder. What would James do?"

James raised an eyebrow. "You mean besides mischief?"

Remus chuckled. "Actually something like that exactly. Maybe there's a prank element to this. Something that only reveals itself under certain conditions."

"I'd hide it so well, not even I could find it again. Bit counter-intuitive I know," the usually raven-haired boy disclosed.

Lily nodded thoughtfully. "Alright. Let's start by checking for any hidden compartments or spells then. We need to be thorough."

They spent the next hour combing over the clock, using every detection spell they knew. Finally, Lily found a small, almost invisible latch on the side of the clock's base that hadn't shown up with any method and really it was pure chance and luck that she pushed at just the right moment, it blended so seamlessly into the base.

"Here," she said, pointing it out to Remus. "This could be something."

Remus carefully opened the latch, revealing a hidden compartment with the following words written on it with gold engraving: ad astra per aspera. The hidden compartment wouldn't budge.

Everyone looked to James as if he had some unique insight on how to solve this riddle.

"Maybe that's a spell?" he shrugged. "That would be the ultimate prank, hide the solution in plain sight, no one would think it is what it seems like. Especially after making you work so hard to even find it."

Lily frowned, her mind turning over the phrase. "Ad astra per aspera. If my Latin isn't eluding me, it means something like 'through hardships to the stars' or 'to the stars through difficulties'."

James, in Lily's body, looked thoughtful. "It's fitting, considering what we're going through. Maybe it means we have to face these challenges head-on to get back to normal, or to something even better, greater."

Lily nodded slowly. "Could be."

James smirked. "And hopefully not that we're star-crossed or something equally dramatic."

Lily chuckled. "Yeah, let's hope not. We've got enough to handle without adding a tragic romance into the mix."

Remus rolled his eyes at their obliviousness. When would these two just accept that they are hopelessly in love and just snog for Merlin's sake already?

In any case, he conceded to the point that it might be a spell with a nod, and tried the incantation provided with a wave of his wand, and lo and behold, the lid open, revealing an old piece of parchment inside. He unfolded it, reading aloud.

To truly see through another's eyes,

You must walk in their shoes 'til the sun and moon rise.

Through the triduum's span in your heart make room,

Only then will you break the spell's loom.

Beware though of the clock's spinning,

Don't think you can idly stay sitting,

For those waiting like a nut,

You'll lose all you've learned, every single thought.

Lily sighed in tentative relief. "Do you think this means the spell lasts only 72 hours?" she would really love it if they had an end date in sight and this wouldn't go on indefinitely.

"Let's hope so," Remus agreed.

James nodded, a determined look on his face. Not great, but not terrible. He would have preferred some kind of instant solution, but definitely better than being stuck like this for weeks on end. "Alright. Two more days of pretending to be each other. We can handle that."

"Except we will lose all of our memories if we fail?" Lily pointed out as she tried to decipher the meaning.

"That would be rather extreme. Again, we would have heard of weird myths involving obliviated prefects if that were the case," the werewolf prefect mused. "If I had to guess you'd lose every good thought you learned about each other through this empathy exercise and would be doomed to hate each other till eternity."

For some reason that didn't sound any better, as far as James was concerned. His eyes met Lily's and he just dared to hope that she didn't want to lose whatever rapport they managed to establish either.

"Another complication, based on the first note, the spell started at midnight. The three days will end at midnight on the night of the full moon. Just after moonrise," she elaborated, knowing that if nothing else, that particular night was significant for Remus, and by extension the Marauders as well. She couldn't replace Prongs in this role. She wasn't sure how, but the boys definitely somehow joined their werewolf friend on the full moons, and she was also sure that she wouldn't be able to replicate whatever the method was in less than two days.

"Worst case we will fake James getting sick with Lily's cold," Remus quickly came up with the solution. "Trust me no one would expect James to participate if he was sick, it's the perfect cover, and you don't have to worry about me."

Lily seemed content with that explanation, but the actual Marauder in her body was visibly not so pleased with that answer.

"Moony, absolutely not. I'm not letting you go through this alone, we four promised each other remember? No, bloody fucking martyrdom," James's anger was palpable.

"Does anyone want to actually clue me into how you are with him on these nights anyway?"

"No," the boys both answered simulatuously.

"What if Sirius implies something and I have no bloody clue what he is talking about?" Lily asked, clearly worried.

Remus and James exchanged a reluctant glance before James sighed. Lily already knew Remus was a werewolf, illegal animagi status wasn't worse than that right? "Alright, Evans. The truth is, we're all Animagi. I mean the Marauders besides Moony. We transform to keep Remus company during his transformation."

Lily's eyes widened in shock. "You're... you're Animagi? All of you? That's very advanced magic! And... you did it for Remus?"

James, in Lily's body, looked a bit embarrassed. "Yeah, well, he's our friend. We couldn't let him go through it alone."

Lily felt a mix of admiration and dejection. "That's incredible. I don't know if I could ever accomplish something like that."

Remus patted her on the back. "Don't sell yourself short, Lily. You've got more talent and determination than most. Though definitely not a two-day project."

Lily nodded, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "Alright. Let's get back to the dorms and get some rest. We'll need it."

"And you absolutely cannot tell anyone about this, you understand?" James implored.

"Of course," she assured.

On the way back, Lily still couldn't let the topic go. "What animals can you transform into?" she mused. "Apparently, your animal form tells a great deal about a person."

James, still in Lily's body, glanced at Remus, who gave a slight nod of encouragement. "Alright, Evans. You already know the fact, so might as well hear this, but really you must not tell anyone about any of this. This is our biggest secret. It's not just us you'd get into trouble, but Remus as well."

Lily nodded eagerly. "I promise I won't tell."

James took a deep breath. "I can transform into a stag."

Lily's eyes widened. "Prongs... because of the antlers. That makes sense."

James nodded, a bit impressed. "Exactly."

Lily smiled, feeling a sense of satisfaction. "And Sirius... he must be a dog, right? Because of 'Padfoot'?"

"Specifically, a big black dog," James confirmed.

Lily chuckled softly. "Of course. That suits him perfectly. Now I get why he likes to slobber over everything."

James laughed, it was true, Sirius had a weird thing about licking even in human form. They were used to it by now.

She turned to Remus. "And Peter? 'Wormtail'... he must be something small, a mouse?"

Remus nodded. "Almost, his form is a rat. Dead useful, he can get into places the rest of us can't."

Lily frowned slightly, still wrapping her mind around it. She wasn't quite sure what that told about Peter as a person. "A rat... unexpected, but it makes sense."

"And 'Moony'," she continued, looking at Remus, "is obviously because of the full moon."

Remus nodded. "Exactly. It's not just about the transformations, though. The nicknames are part of our bond."

Lily felt a newfound respect for the Marauders. They had gone to incredible lengths to support their friend. "You guys are amazing," she said softly. "I never realized how much you did for each other."

James smiled, a touch of pride in his eyes. "We're family, Evans. And family looks out for each other."

When they reached the common room, Peter was nowhere in sight, but they found Sirius lounging on one of the sofas, his eyes narrowing with curiosity as he saw them enter. "Where have you three been?" he asked, his voice tinged with playful suspicion. "And why do you all look so... chummy?"

Lily exchanged a quick glance with Remus, trying to come up with a plausible explanation. "Just catching up on prefect duties," she said, trying to sound nonchalant. She still couldn't master James's easy-going tone. "You know, catching Lily up on the meeting that she missed."

Sirius snorted, clearly not buying it. "Prefect duties? Since when did you three become such boring goody-two-shoes, Prongs?"

James rolled his eyes, playing along, answering as he thought Lily would. "It's called responsibility, Black. Not that you'd know much about that."

Remus chuckled, leaning against the arm of the sofa. "Someone has to keep things in order around here. And with Lily down for the count all day, we had to pick up the slack."

"The slack being the Head Girl wishing the Head Boy went down on her?" the dog-animagus chuckled recalling that morning peculiar encounter.

Lily, in James's body, groaned at the embarrassing reminder of James slipping up in her body, making it seem like she had the hots for Potter.

Sirius raised an eyebrow at "James's" groan, clearly confused. "What's the matter, Prongs? You've been in love with Evans since third year. Shouldn't you be happy if she wants you now?"

Lily quickly realizing her mistake tried to redirect. "I just don't like you teasing her, especially for something she had no control over, as feverish as she was. Just lay off her."

Sirius looked surprised, but then he grinned, putting up his hands in retreat. "Alright, alright. We all know how protective you are of her."

Lily had an amused look on her face, actually touched by the notion that James was protective of her. "Yeah, well, someone's got to look out for her when she's not herself," she mused, internally chuckling at the hidden meaning.

James's eyes went wide, taken by surprise by Lily's admission. Though it was utterly weird to hear the fondness for himself in his own voice. He quickly masked his surprise, trying to play it cool. "It's nice to know the Head Boy always has my back."

Sirius, still grinning, seemed to accept this explanation. "You're both insufferable, you know that? Get a room already."

Both Head Students blushed at hearing that observation.

Remus, though he privately agreed, cleared his throat and seized the opportunity to steer the conversation to safer ground. "Well, now that everything's sorted, let's get some rest. We've got a lot to handle tomorrow."

Sirius nodded, still looking a bit suspicious but willing to let it go. "Alright, Moony. Just remember, all work and no play makes for a very dull Marauder."

The werewolf smirked. "Don't worry, Padfoot. You've got enough play for all of us."

As Sirius trodded up to their dorm, the trio—Remus, James, and Lily—found a quieter corner of the common room to discuss the prefect matters they had used for their alibi. Lily felt a wave of relief wash over her. They had managed to deflect Sirius's curiosity for now, but the real challenge lay ahead.

"We might as well go over what happened at the prefect meeting yesterday since you might bear some of the fallout once we switch back" Lily sighed, rubbing her temples. "You missed quite the spectacle."

James, in Lily's body, nodded, looking concerned. "Sorry about that. What did I miss?"

Lily sighed, recalling the incident. "Mulciber and Avery tried to wiggle out of their patrol timeslots again. Mulciber complained about having to patrol on Tuesday evenings, claiming he wasn't available. He tried to undermine the system I put in place by arguing that his 'yellow' marking meant he shouldn't have to patrol then."

James frowned. "Of course he did. And what did you do?"

Remus interjected, his expression serious. "It was more than just a disagreement, Lily. It was blatant disrespect. Mulciber almost called you that before you cut him off. He might not say it to your face, but apparently, he has no problem trying to undermine you behind your back."

James's eyes darkened with anger. "He tried to call you the m-word? That's it. I'm hexing him the next time I see him."

Lily shook her head, placing a calming hand on James's shoulder. "No, James. That's not the way to handle this. We need to be the bigger people. Also if you hexing him now it will seem like, I'm hexing him which is just trouble I don't need right now."

Remus nodded in agreement. "Lily handled it well. But we do need to stay vigilant. They might try something else."

Lily, in James's body, crossed her arms. "I told him that if he couldn't appreciate the effort put into making their schedules more manageable, we'd drop the preferred timeslot system entirely. And I made it clear that any further attempts to undermine our authority would result in them handing in their badges."

"Agreed," James said, still fuming but visibly calming down. "I just hate that they think they can get away with that kind of behaviour."

Lily smiled softly. "I know, but we're not going to let them. We'll keep things in order and show them that they can't push us around."

James shook his head, his frustration still evident. "It's infuriating that they think they can undermine you just because of their prejudices."

"I know, believe me, welcome to my life," she huffed.

As Lily spoke, something clicked for James. He'd always admired her for her intelligence and beauty, but now he saw something deeper. Her strength, her constant fight against prejudice, and her unwavering determination—it all hit him hard. She wasn't just someone he fancied; she was someone he genuinely respected and aspired to be more like. This whole experience had opened his eyes to a side of her life he hadn't fully appreciated before.

Remus glanced at the clock. "We should get some rest. Tomorrow's going to be another long day."

James nodded, his expression equally resolute. "We've got this. Just two more days," he kept repeating it like some mantra since they found the clue.

With that, they stood up and made their way towards the staircases leading to their respective dormitories. They stopped at the bottom of the stairs, each glancing towards the staircases they would normally ascend.

An awkward silence settled over them as they realized the next issue. Lily, in James's body, hesitated. "So, I guess I'll be sleeping in your dorm tonight," she said, trying to sound casual but failing.

James, in Lily's body, scratched the back of his neck (though this was still weird since there was a bunch of hair in the way he didn't usually have). "Yeah, and I'll have to go to the girls' dormitory."

Remus, sensing their discomfort, tried to ease the tension. "Well, at least you both get a unique perspective on each other's lives. Think of it as another part of the empathy exercise."

Lily and James exchanged uneasy glances.

"I suppose it's only fair," Lily said reluctantly. "Just... try not to snoop through my things, alright?"

James rolled his eyes but smiled. "As if I would. And you, don't go messing up my side of the dorm. I've got a system."

Lily smirked. "Your system is chaos, Potter. I only got a glimpse of it this morning but that was enough."

"Organized chaos," he corrected, a playful glint in his eyes.

Remus chuckled. "Alright, you two. Enough bickering."

They exchanged nods, and Lily turned to ascend the boys' staircase with Remus in tow, while James headed towards the girls' side. As they climbed, they each felt a strange sense of unease, knowing they were about to step into each other's personal spaces.

Lily reached the top of the boys' dormitory stairs and pushed open the door to the seventh-years' room. It was a mess, just as she expected. That morning she hadn't even seen the bunch of Quidditch gear strewn about, books and parchment scattered on his desk, and his unmade bed. True, that last one was her own fault; she had left in quite a hurry when she realized the body switch had happened.

She sighed and made her way to his bed, trying not to disturb anything or anyone. By some miracle, Sirius and Peter were already asleep, their light snores filling the space. As she settled in after a quick "'Night" from Remus, she couldn't help but feel a bit of admiration for how James managed to function in this chaos. It was a real skill, even if a very weird one.

Lying in James's bed, surrounded by the remnants of his day-to-day life, she felt a strange sense of connection to him. Despite the awkwardness and challenges of the day, she had gained a newfound respect for his ability to juggle responsibilities and maintain his charisma. She understood now that his seemingly effortless charm and leadership were underpinned by a lot of unseen effort and dedication.

She pulled the covers over herself, trying to get comfortable. The scent of James's cologne lingered in the bedding, a constant reminder of the strange situation they were in. She smiled to herself. There was something utterly familiar in the scents surrounding her. At the back of her mind, there was a memory nibbling at her thoughts, of the Potions classroom and the day in sixth year when Slughorn showed them four difficult and under the right circumstances dangerous potions, but before she could consciously make the connection to the way Amortentia had smelled to her, sleep claimed her.

Meanwhile, James reached the girls' dormitory and paused at the door. Taking a deep breath, he pushed it open and stepped inside. Lily's side of the room was neat and orderly, everything in its place. He carefully made his way to her bed, feeling out of place among the girlish decorations. He made quick work of finding some pyjamas, a towel and body wash, and dashed to the bathroom to take a quick shower, being very careful to touch himself as little as possible. It felt like some weird violation of Lily's body if he dared to look or touch too much since it didn't really belong to him. As he lay down in bed after returning, he marvelled at how different their worlds were, yet how much they were learning about each other through this experience.

As James was getting comfortable, the door creaked open, and Marlene McKinnon slipped inside. Her eyes were blazing with a mix of annoyance and determination as she spotted James in Lily's body.

"Lily!" she hissed, mindful that the other girls might hear, marching over and grabbing him by the arm. "We need to talk. Now."

James, taken aback by the sudden intrusion, tried to protest, but Marlene was having none of it. She hopped on Lily's bed, pulled the curtains around them, and cast a privacy charm.

"What on earth are you doing?" James managed to sputter.

Marlene's eyes narrowed. "What am I doing? More like what are you doing? You blow me off in the Hospital Wing, don't tell me about this whole body-switching mess, and now you're here acting like nothing's happened?"

James sighed, realizing that he had to come clean. "McKinnon, I'm sorry. We didn't have a chance to explain everything. It's been a crazy day."

"Crazy day?" she echoed, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "That's an understatement. Do you have any idea how worried I've been? My best friend is acting weird, my Quidditch Captain is acting super weird, can't even perform a bloody roll, and I'm supposed to just roll with it. At least Lily had the good sense to fill me in."

James winced, feeling the weight of Marlene's frustration. "I'm really sorry, Marlene. We've been trying to keep everything under control, but it's been harder than we thought."

Marlene huffed, clearly still annoyed but willing to listen. "Alright, spill. How did this happen?"

James took a deep breath and explained the situation as best as he could. He wasn't sure what Lily had disclosed so far so he started at the beginning. He told her about the spell, the clock, the secondary clue they found this evening, their hopes of it lasting just 3 days and their speculations on how to reverse it. Marlene listened intently, her expression gradually softening as she understood the gravity of their predicament.

"Okay," she said after a moment of silence. "I get it. It's not like you guys did this on purpose. Merlin's bloody balls, who would put a jinx like this on the prefects' office?"

James shrugged, looking genuinely baffled. "We have no idea. Maybe it was a prank from the founders to make sure the representatives of the student body got along, or some ancient spell that's just now coming into play. We aren't even sure if this is the first time this has ever happened. All we know is that we have to see it through and learn the lesson it's trying to teach us."

Marlene shook her head in disbelief. "You lot always manage to get into the most bizarre situations. Just... be careful, alright? And keep me in the loop."

"Absolutely," James agreed, feeling a bit more at ease. "And thank you for understanding."

Marlene nodded, her stern look returning. "Just remember this, Potter. If I find out you've taken advantage of being in the girls' dorm, you'll regret it. Got it?"

James nodded vigorously. "Got it. I promise, Marlene, I'm just trying to get through this without causing more trouble."

She sighed, finally relenting. It's not like James was a pervert, and the only person he had really been into, well, he is occupying her body. The other girls had nothing to worry about. "Alright. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But I'm watching you."

"Thanks, Marlene. And again, I'm really sorry," James said, genuinely grateful for her understanding.

Marlene gave him a stern look but nodded. "Just don't make me regret trusting you. And for Merlin's sake, let me know if there's anything I can do to help."

With that, she left the bed, cancelling the privacy charm and leaving James alone with his thoughts. He lay back down, feeling a mixture of relief and guilt. For he was definitely enjoying falling asleep surrounded by Lily's scent all too much. He could definitely get used to this.
