Chapter 166: Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!

Ready to head to Lily of the Valley Island, the site of the Sinnoh League Conference, Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock were waiting for their ship to come.

However, the group found out that they actually missed the ship much to their dismay.

"The next one will come tomorrow."Brock stated.

"Aw man."Ash groaned.

"I guess we'll have to catch the next one."Dawn suggested.

Denise, however, was lost in her thoughts than complaining about losing the ship that was to head to the Lily of the Valley Island.

"Me and Ash did it. We both won the Beacon Badge and now can officially enter the Sinnoh League."Denise thought and then remembered seeing the blaze of Ash's Infernape become powerful during her friend's battle with Volkner."Also, Ash's Infernape has really become stronger than he ever was before. I hope that training really pays off when Ash faces off against-"

"Floatzel! Let's go!"

Ash, Dawn, Denise and Brock headed out of the building to see Kenny having a special training session with Olivine City's Gym Leader, Jasmine.

Jasmine was a slender teenage girl with fair skin and milky chocolate brown eyes. She has long straight light brown hair that reached her waist with two orange beaded hair ties that tie two locks of her hair into short pigtails that stick up. She wore a teal sundress with a bridal hem that reached her knees with a snow white cardigan that reaches her waist and sleeves that go over her elbows and was tied with an orange puffy bow. She also wore white sandals which have two teal decorations over the toes.

Dawn smiled at seeing Kenny again.

"It's Kenny."Dawn remarked.

"Floatzel, Whirlpool!"Kenny ordered.

Floatzel raised its arms and a large whirlpool appeared above its head.

"Now release it and use Aqua Jet!"Kenny ordered.

Floatzel released the Whirlpool and then used Aqua Jet, which binds it.

After doing its attacks, the Sea Weasel Pokémon landed next to his trainer.

Kenny then glanced at Jasmine.

"What do you think?"Kenny asked.

"A Whirlpool and Aqua Jet combination?"Jasmine said with a smile."Now that's pretty good. That would multiply their strength. Even in a normal smile."

Ash and Brock recognised the lady as she was Jasmine, the Gym leader of Olivine City.

"Hey, that's-"Ash started.

Brock immediately became lovestruck at seeing Jasmine again.

"It's Jasmine!"Brock said joyfully.

Brock went to flirt with Olivine City's Gym Leader once more as Dawn and Denise glanced at Ash.

"Ash, who's Jasmine?"Denise said in confusion.

"She's the Gym Leader of Olivine City in the Johto Region."Ash exclaimed."Her partner Steelix was awesomely strong."

"Cool."Denise praised."So she's a Gym Leader who specialises in Steel Type Pokémon like Byron."

Ash nodded. "Yeah."

Brock started flirting with Jasmine again as he held her hands.

"It's been too long, Jasmine!"Brock declared.

"Your name is Brock isn't it?"Jasmine assumed.

"Right."Brock agreed."And seeing you again means that fate has bonded us together in frozen time and space forever!"

Croagunk then poison jabbed Brock causing him to wince in pain.

"Or me…"Brock muttered.

Brock collapsed on the ground as Ash, Dawn and Denise rushed up to Kenny and Jasmine.

"Hi, Jasmine."Ash greeted.

"Hey, Ash."Jasmine responded, surprised to see the Pallet Town Trainer after so long."How are you doing?"

"Great."Ash replied."Thanks."

Pikachu smiled. "Pikachu."

Dawn and Denise looked at Jasmine.

"My name is Dawn."Dawn stated.

"And I'm her twin sister, Denise."Denise answered.

"Hello."Jasmine said, smiling at the twin sisters."My name is Jasmine."

Kenny smiled at Dawn and Denise.

"Hey, Denise."Kenny admitted."Congratulations on finally becoming Top Coordinator like your mother. Your latest match against Amy in the final round of the Grand Festival was awesome."

"Thanks, Kenny."Denise thanked.

"So you were watching it too?"Dawn assumed.

"Yep."Kenny replied with a nod."No doubt Barry and Lucas were watching too."

Denise felt a little anxious at the mention of Lucas since she remembered that she hadn't given him answer on whether to go out with him or not.

"Of course, they would."Denise chuckled.

Dawn glanced at Kenny's Floatzel.

"Your Floatzel looks great."Dawn remarked.

"I was just letting Jasmine take a look at my contest moves."Kenny admitted.

Ash and Brock looked at Jasmine.

"But, Jasmine, you're Olivine City's Gym Leader."Ash complemented."How does that work?"

"You speciality is Pokémon battles."Brock stated."Not Contest Battles, right?"

"Right."Jasmine agreed with a nod."But in order to get really stronger, I think its best to learn from all kinds of experiences and Contest Battles are teaching me a whole lot."

"But what about the Gym?"Ash questioned.

"One of my colleagues is watching the Gym for me."Jasmine replied."And thanks to him, I really get to go out and sharpen up my skills."

"That's wonderful, Jasmine."Brock praised."You're happy and proud to be a Gym Leader. At the same time, you're looking for ways to improve your battling skills."

Jasmine smiled at Brock.

"As far as I'm concerned that's what being a Gym Leader is all about."Jasmine remarked.

Kenny brought his attention on Dawn.

"Dawn, what's the plan from here on out?"Kenny asked.

"Right now, I am going to cheer on Dennie and Ash at the Sinnoh League."Dawn declared.

"And after that?"Kenny asked.

Dawn became surprised by Kenny's question

"After that?"Dawn said in confusion.

"There's still a lot of time until the next Grand Festival."Kenny declared."So are you going back to Twinleaf Town to stay with your mum or continuing to travel on your journey instead?"

"I haven't really thought about it yet."Dawn admitted with a troubled look.

"Well, I honestly would love to travel to a whole new Region after the events in the Sinnoh League."Denise declared confidently.

"That's cool, Denise."Kenny praised.

Suddenly, Floatzel got captured by the mechanical arm of Team Rocket's balloon.

"Floatzel!"Kenny yelled out.

Team Rocket began reciting their motto.

"Silly twerps whose heads are filled with mush!"

"Get to the point! We're on a rush!"

"On the Wind!"

"Past the Stars!"

"You twerps are making me blush!"

Ash, Dawn, Denise, Brock, Jasmine and Kenny glared at Team Rocket.

"Team Rocket!"Kenny shouted."Give back my Floatzel!"

"On whose show?"Jessie sneered.

"Gotta go!"James remarked.

"Overheat!"

Flint's Infernape saved Floatzel with a powerful Overheat causing Team Rocket's balloon to explode and send the three bad guys into the air.

"Alright!"Jessie complained."Who fired us from the boss' debate!"

"I had millions of cash in my mind!"James retorted.

"Head into the sky!"Meowth scoffed.

"WE'RE BLASTING OFF AGAIN!"Team Rocket screamed and disappeared in the sky.

Floatzel landed safely on the floor as Kenny rushed up to him.

"Floatzel, are you okay?"Kenny asked.

"Floatzel."Floatzel said with a nod.

Ash, Dawn, Denise, Brock and Jasmine turned around to see Flint walking up to them.

"Flint, it's you."Denise chuckled.

"Yeah."Flint agreed."And I am glad that I made it in time, Denise."

"What are you doing here, Flint?"Ash asked.

"I wanted to see you two before you left before you continued your journey."Flint declared."After all, you guys are the ones that brought my best bud back to his electrifying self and took some doing."

Denise blushed and smiled shyly at Flint's words.

"It was nothing."Denise assured."Really."

Ash laughed lightly in respond while rubbing the back of his neck.

"Volkner wanted to come as well."Flint admitted."But his busy taking up challenges, so he told me to give a big hello to all of you."

Jasmine went over to Flint.

"Hello, Flint."Jasmine greeted, earning Flint's attention."My name is Jasmine and I am the Olivine City's Gym leader. I would like to challenge you to a Pokémon Battle."

Flint smirked. "With me?"

"Not everyone gets a chance to battle a member of the Elite Four everyday."Jasmine explained."It will help me get a lot stronger."

"Of course."Flint responded."Always happy to accept a beautiful challenger."

"Oh, thank you."Jasmine thanked gratefully.

Ash smiled at Pikachu.

"A Gym Leader battling a member of the Elite Four."Ash praised."That's awesome."

"Pika."Pikachu agreed.

"This should be cool to watch."Denise suggested.

The group headed to a small field for Flint and Jasmine to have their battle.

Flint used Infernape while Jasmine still needed to take out the Pokémon she was going to use.

"The battle will be one on one!"Brock declared.

"I am going to use Infernape."Flint stated.

"Okay."Jasmine remarked and took out her Poké Ball."Here's mine!"

Jasmine's Poké Ball opened and sends out her Steelix.

"Steelix!"

Dawn took out her Pokédex to scan Steelix.

"Steelix the Iron Snake Pokémon and the evolved form of Onix."Dawn's Pokédex buzzed."Steelix's body is much harder than any metal as it is tempered underground under high pressure and heat."

"Whoa."Denise sneered."Jasmine's Steelix must be really strong."

"Yeah."Ash agreed with a nod."Her Iron Tail was really tough for me to get past when I challenged her to win my seventh badge in Johto."

"But a Steel type like Steelix is at a disadvantage against a Fire type like Infernape."Dawn reminded.

"Though at the same time, Steelix is a Ground Type whose attacks are super effective against a Fire Type like Infernape and Jasmine's partner."Ash stated with a smile."I wonder what her strategy will be."

Ash suddenly got an idea.

"I should let my Infernape watch this."Ash suggested."You should do the same thing with Combusken, Dennie."

"Great idea."Denise agreed.

Ash sent his Infernape and Denise sent Combusken to watch how Flint's Infernape battles.

"Infernape!"

"Combusken!"

"Hey, Infernape and Combusken."Ash said, greeting the two Fire-Fighting Type Pokémon."Me and Dennie want the two of you to watch how Flint's Infernape battles."

"Be sure to take notes, okay?"Denise instructed with a wink.

Both Infernape and Combusken nodded at Ash and Dawn.

"Infernape."Infernape said with a nod.

"Combusken."Combusken remarked.

Dawn turned around when she noticed Kenny looked a bit concerned.

"What's wrong, Kenny?"Dawn questioned.

"It's nothing."Kenny replied simply and glanced at Jasmine."Jasmine! Good luck!"

Dawn looked at Kenny with a confused expression.

"Battle begin!"Brock declared.

Flint smiled at Jasmine.

"Why don't you go first?"Flint requested.

"Steelix, Iron Tail!"Jasmine ordered."Let's go!"

The end of Steelix's tail glowed white and flipped around to hit Flint's Infernape.

"Dodge it, quick!"Flint ordered.

Flint's Infernape dodged from being hit by Steelix's Iron Tail.

"Excellent. Infernape has been well trained."Jasmine murmured before giving Steelix his next order."Alright, Steelix! Use Iron Tail and aim well!"

Steelix activated Iron Tail again.

"Deflect it!"Flint ordered.

Steelix attempted once more to use Iron Tail, though Flint's Infernape deflected it.

"Use Sandstorm!"Jasmine ordered.

Steelix lifted its head straight up and spins around, creating a sand tornado.

It then fired a sandstorm at Flint's Infernape from its body.

"Repel that!"Flint ordered.

Steelix used Sandstorm, but Infernape repelled the attack.

"It wiped out the sandstorm!"Ash complemented.

"It seems that none of Jasmine's attacks seems to be working."Dawn declared.

"Since that is Flint's battling style, he first wants to watch how his opponent attacks."Denise exclaimed.

"Crunch!"Jasmine ordered."Let's go!"

Steelix rushed forward to bite Flint's Infernape.

"Use Flare Blitz!"Flint ordered.

Flint's Infernape becomes surrounded by red-orange fire and covered its entire body.

The Flame Pokémon then slammed into its opponent with great force.

Steelix gets taken back (and defeated) from Infernape's Flare Blitz.

"Steelix!"Jasmine cried out.

Steelix slammed into the ground and fainted, making Flint's Infernape the winner of the battle.

"Steelix is unable to battle! Infernape is the winner!"Brock declared."So the victory goes to Flint!"

Dawn smiled at the battle that she and her companions just witnessed.

"Wow."Dawn praised."They won it in one move."

"That shows how amazing Flint is."Ash admitted.

"Like all the other Elite Four."Denise chuckled.

"Infernape."Infernape agreed.

"Combusken."Combusken said.

Jasmine smiled as she looked at Steelix.

"You were wonderful, Steelix."Jasmine assured kindly and took out her Poké Ball."You take a long rest."

Jasmine returned Steelix into its Pokè Ball.

"Infernape, excellent job."Flint stated.

Flint returned his Infernape into its Poké Ball as well before looking at Jasmine.

"I am sorry, Jasmine."Flint apologised."But letting my opponents have an easy goal isn't my style, you know?"

"I have learned a lot because of that."Jasmine admitted and gives Flint a bow."Thank you very much, Flint."

Ash, Infernape, Denise and Combusken went up to Flint and Jasmine while Dawn was left alone with Kenny.

"Dawn, I am going to challenge Ash to a battle now."Kenny declared."If I manage to win…"

"Then what?"Dawn asked.

"Dawn, I want you and I to go to a journey together."Kenny stated.

An astonished look appeared on Dawn's face.

"A journey?"Dawn said in surprise.

"I know this is out of no where, but I had to tell you how I feel."Kenny remarked.

Kenny then ran off from Dawn.

"Hey, Kenny!"Dawn protested."Wait!"

Brock watched the scene behind him and simply smiled.

Later that Evening…

Ash, Dawn, Denise, Brock, Jasmine, Kenny and Flint watched the sun set at the beach while standing near the lighthouse.

Jasmine glanced at Flint.

"So tell me, Flint."Jasmine insisted."It's this strategy of letting your opponents attack first like that is your battling style."

"Right."Flint agreed."You see for me that's the best way to train. Winning a battle without getting attacked doesn't teach you anything. First, I let my opponent attack and then I defend against them which really helps sharpen up my Pokémon's skills."

"I see."Jasmine answered.

"But if my opponent is a whole lot stronger than me, I can't really hold off against them."Flint admitted.

"Like Cynthia?"Jasmine assumed."The Champion of the Sinnoh region's Pokémon League?"

"Yeah."Flint replied with a wink.

Ash smiled at Flint.

"Hey Flint, are you going challenge Cynthia?"Ash assumed.

"I am."Flint answered."But I am going to train as hard as I can."

"Awesome."Ash commented."I would love to see that battle."

Pikachu smiled. "Pikachu."

"Hey, Ash."Kenny spoke up, earning Ash's attention."I challenge you to a battle."

Denise became surprised at Kenny's declaration.

"Great."Ash remarked."I guess it's time to pick up from where we left off in Solaceon Town."

Ash's stomach suddenly started grumbling.

"Let's pick it up."Ash suggested sheepishly."I'm hungry."

"Then let's go back to the Pokémon Center."Brock insisted and glanced at Jasmine."Jasmine, care to join us?"

"Thanks."Jasmine thanked."As long as it won't be trouble for you all."

"Hey. No problem."Denise remarked."We'll be most happy if you joined us for lunch."

Kenny looked sad while Dawn smiled at him.

"Come on, Kenny."Dawn encouraged."Let's go."

At the Pokémon Center, Ash, Dawn, Denise, Brock, Jasmine, Kenny and Flint finished eating lunch together.

"Boy."Ash remarked while rubbing his stomach."Am I stuffed."

"Those tempura shrimps were worth the wait."Denise praised.

As they get out of the restaurant, a group of children see Flint and wanted to get his autographs.

"Wow! It's Flint!"

"Flint of the Elite Four!"

"Shake my hand!"

"Can I get your autograph?"

"Sure."Flint answered."But let's first take turns."

Denise noticed a few children walking up to her.

"Hey!"A little girl gasped."You're Denise the new Top Coordinator!"

"Can we have a photo with you?"A little boy asked.

"Oh, sure."Denise replied kindly.

While Flint and Denise were busy with their small fans, Jasmine noticed something was troubling Dawn.

"Something on your mind, Dawn?"Jasmine suggested.

"There is, but it's not that important."Dawn declared with an anxious smile.

"You see my goal is to become Top Coordinator just like my sister."Dawn explained."But now there are other things on my mind. Right now, it seems all I can think about is cheering Ash and Denise on when they compete at the upcoming Sinnoh League. And I can't really decide what to do after the Sinnoh League is over."

Unknown to Dawn and Jasmine, Kenny was listening to their conversation.

"I remember feeling like that before."Jasmine admitted."I was wondering whether or not to continue being a Gym Leader back then. Which is why I am out in this journey and since I've been on it, I seen and heard so many important things. But I can tell you that you have to decide yourself what road is best for you to travel on."

"For myself…"Dawn murmured.

Jasmine gives Dawn a smile.

"Dawn."Jasmine spoke up."At the end, only you can decide what future you want."

Dawn smirked. "Right."

"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.

After Flint and Denise finished spending time with their small fans, she and Ash wanted to hear how Flint won the Sinnoh League.

Ash and Denise sat on a bench with Flint to hear his story.

"It all happened when I was just ten years old like you two. Rumour had it that my final opponent was a really strong Trainer."Flint exclaimed as he recalled that he battled a strong Trained, as his Inerfnape before evolving from Monferno had trouble hitting his opponent's Snorlax."Infernape's attacks weren't landing at all while my opponent's Snorlax's attacks were fierce."

"That must've been really intense like Ash's final battle with Brandon."Denise assumed.

"So how did you win?"Ash questioned.

"Because I'm a genius just like you two."Flint admitted confidently with a thumbs up.

"What kind of an answer is that?"Ash asked.

"Pika pika."Pikachu mumbled.

"I guess everyone has their own secrets."Denise giggled lightly.

Flint simply smiled and looking at the ceiling.

"It had nothing to do with winning or strategy."Flint declared before looking at Ash and Denise."Look, Ash and Denise, as you both get ready to enter the Sinnoh League, I got one piece of advice for the two of you. However strong your opponent might be is no big deal because only a person who truly believes they can win can win."

Ash and Denise glanced at each other.

"So we have to believe that we can win."Ash murmured.

"Remember that."Flint instructed.

Both Ash and Denise smiled at Flint.

"Right."Ash agreed.

"Thanks, Flint."Denise thanked.

The following morning, it was time for Ash and Kenny to have their battle.

Dawn and Denise sat next to each other with Pikachu, Prinplup and Combusken accompanying them.

"This will be a one on one Pokémon battle!"Brock announced.

"Okay!"Kenny remarked and threw out his Poké Ball."Here we go!"

Kenny's Poké Ball opened and his Empoleon appeared on the battlefield.

"Empoleon!"

"Buizel, I choose you!"Ash stated.

Ash's Poké Ball opened and Buizel appeared in the battlefield.

"Bui bui!"

"Empoleon vs Buizel?"Dawn responded with a smile."A battle between two Water types."

"Let's see how this turns out."Denise suggested.

"Combusken."Combusken said.

"Prinplup."Prinplup chirped.

"Pika."Pikachu remarked.

Ash looked at Buizel.

"Buizel, be sure to stay focused!"Ash instructed, earning a nod from the Sea Weasel Pokémon."Okay, Kenny! You can go first!"

"You got it, Ash!"Kenny assured.

"Begin!"Brock informed.

"Empoleon use Flash Cannon!"Kenny ordered.

Empoleon fired a silver beam of energy from its beak at Buizel.

"Dodge now!"Ash ordered.

Buizel dodged Empoleon's Flash Cannon.

"Use Drill Peck!"Kenny ordered.

Empoleon's beak and crown glowed white and it spun like a drill as it headed towards Buizel.

"Intercept!"Ash ordered.

Empoleon followed with Drill Peck, but Buizel intercepted the move.

Dawn and Denise immediately see Ash was using a bit of Flint's battle style.

"Wow."Dawn remarked."Ash is using Flint's battling style."

Denise nodded in agreement.

Prinplup, Combusken and Pikachu cheered at the sight.

"And that's because battling is the highest of training there is."Ash chuckled."I want Buizel's defences to look sharp."

"Wonder how this will work out as you planned."Kenny complemented and gave Empoleon his next order."Use Hydro Cannon!"

Empoleon unleashed Hydro Cannon at Buizel.

"Quick!"Ash called out."Intercept it with Water Gun!"

Buizel used Water Gun to stop Empoleon's Hydro Cannon, but failed and gets hit.

"Metal Claw!"Kenny ordered.

"I thought so!"Ash stated."Evade and use Ice Punch!"

Empoleon goes to use Metal Claw, but Buizel evaded and used Ice Punch.

"Dodge and use Metal Claw again!"Kenny ordered.

The Emperor Pokémon dodged and hits its opponent using Metal Claw.

Buizel landed on the ground and began panting slowly.

"Let's turn this around!"Ash suggested."Buizel use Ice Punch!"

Buizel leaped forward and used Ice Punch.

"Dodge and use Drill Peck!"Kenny ordered.

Empoleon dodged Buizel's Ice Punch before attacking its opponent with Drill Peck.

Buizel gets a direct hit by Empoleon's Drill Peck and gets defeated, making Kenny the winner of the battle.

"Buizel is unable to battle! Empoleon is the winner!"Brock declared."And the victory goes to Kenny!"

Dawn was surprised to see Kenny win the battle.

"Kenny won?"Denise questioned in awe."Now that's unexpected."

"Yes!"Kenny cheered in victory."We won!"

"Empoleon!"Empoleon agreed.

Ash and Pikachu went to check on Buizel.

"I'm sorry, Buizel."Ash apologised with a smile."I guess I got a little too carried away to be too much like Flint. You deserve a good rest."

Ash returned Buizel in his Pokè Ball.

Denise and Brock went up to Ash.

"Great training for you as well."Brock stated.

"Huh?"Ash said in confusion.

"Just make sure not to get overconfident next time."Denise instructed.

"Right, Dennie."Ash replied.

Pikachu jumped into Ash's arms while Kenny walked up to Dawn.

"Hey, Dawn."Kenny remarked.

"Wow, Kenny."Dawn praised kindly."Great job."

"So look, Dawn."Kenny spoke up."I'll be over at the lighthouse. If you want to come to a journey with me, I'll be there."

Kenny then walked away from Dawn.

"Kenny…"Dawn murmured softly.

Afterwards, Ash, Brock, Dawn and Denise joined up with Flint and Jasmine.

"So what are you going to do now, Jasmine?"Ash asked.

"It's back to the Olivine Gym."Jasmine declared."For this moment on, my goal is to become even stronger battling as a Gym Leader."

"She wants to get stronger, huh?"Flint murmured before bringing his attention on Ash and Denise."Say Ash and Denise, I've decided to go ahead and challenge Cynthia now."

"Really?"Denise asked curiously.

"Remember the piece of advice, I gave you?"Flint reminded.

"Sure."Ash responded with a nod."Only one person that truly believes they can win? Can win."

"To be honest, I didn't actually 100% believe I can win Cynthia as long as I didn't believe I can win, there's no way I could have beaten her."Flint stated."Now I feel that I am ready to go."

"Then you can be sure I'll be routing for you all the way."Ash assured.

"Me too."Brock agreed.

"And me."Jasmine added.

"The same with me."Denise admitted.

Combusken smiled. "Combusken."

"Wow."Flint chuckled."Thank you all."

A while later, Ash, Brock, Dawn and Denise headed onto the ship that was to take them to the Sinnoh League as Flint and Jasmine waved goodbye to them.

"Take care!"Flint declared.

"Good to see you!"Jasmine remarked.

Ash, Pikachu, Brock, Denise and Combusken waved goodbye to Flint and Jasmine.

Brock was in tears and held a tissue near his eyes upon having to leave Jasmine again.

"Thanks!"Ash thanked."Lots of luck in whatever you guys are up to!"

"Pikachu!"Pikachu remarked.

"Bye!"Denise chuckled."Hope to see you all again soon!"

"Combusken!"Combusken agreed.

At the lighthouse where they were meant to meet, Kenny waited for Dawn but instead finds a letter with a Piplup figurine.

Kenny opened the letter to read it.

"Dear, Kenny. About my future plans for the time being? I have decided to cheer for Ash and Denise in the Sinnoh League. I'll think about what I am doing after that and only I can figure that out. But I'll guarantee you one thing for sure. No matter what happens, I'll keep working on my dream to become Top Coordinator. As long as we both share that same dream, I'm sure we'll meet again, Kenny! Count on it!"

"Kenny!"

Kenny turned around and saw Dawn waving at him with Prinplup next to her on the ship passing by the lighthouse.

"Hey, Dawn!"Kenny called out.

"Hey, Kenny! Take good care of yourself!"Dawn insisted happily."And let's both give everything we got!"
