Chapter Five

The first thing Sarah noticed about the girl known as Bonnie Bennett, was that she was absolutely stunning. She was small, but lithe and the older woman could only assume she did cheerleading or dance.

Currently the girl was wrapped up in Tyler's arms, who was also encased in a Reid and Pogue sandwich. The four didn't seem to care that they were in the middle of Nicky's, where everyone had seen the three Sons turn in unison and make a break for the door. Tyler had caught the girl first, picked her up and spun her around like the prince did in those fairytale cartoons. They had laughed as he did it and almost fell when Tyler went to set her down.

Reid had caught them, sliding beside Tyler and dropping a kiss to the crown of the girl's head. Pogue had came up behind Bonnie, giving her a side hug and then nodding in Caleb's direction. The elder Son nodded, though he didn't seem to like how the boys were holding Bonnie.

It was almost like he was jealous of how easily she let them in. Caleb looked like an outsider to their interaction; like everyone else.

Well everyone but Nicky, who had come from behind the bar-top. "Alright you runts," he announced, his voice booming over the music. The three pulled away as the owner too in the girl in question. He held his arms out for her to come into. "Come here, kiddo!"

Bonnie said nothing as the burly man held her close. Sarah's eyes widened as he held her tight, and she could have sworn she heard a sniff from him.

"You need anything while you're here, you come to me if the boys aren't available. Shelia was a good woman, and you're family around here." Nicky told the teenager and left her with a loud smack of a kiss to her forehead.

Sarah turned her gaze to Kate. Her roommate looked like she was trying to hold on by pins and needles. But she obviously wanted to hug Bonnie. And it looked like the girl took notice. Sarah's breath caught as sage green eyes caught sight of them and then Kate was off the pool table she had been leaning against and the girls were embracing.

For the first time in a long time Sarah felt like an outsider, watching in on a scene that she wasn't sure she was meant to see. It was like a family coming back together. No, she realized even as Caleb moved to linger off to the side with the boys while Kate and Bonnie parted to talk and gust to each other, it was a family coming back together.

She hadn't thought it would hurt to see it. The warmth in all of their eyes, a protective glint in Caleb's that she had never seen before, that hurt too. Hell she could see Aaron and his snooty girlfriend Kira back by the wall, watching the group and looking envious as Reid and Tyler moved to stand beside Bonnie and Pogue took his place at Kate's side. Caleb remained off a little ways, but he also fit the picture perfect image.

And then it happened; those green eyes turned to her and the illusion shattered. She offered a smile to Sarah, being led by Kate to her.

"This is my roommate Sarah," Kate introduced.

"Hi," greeted the blonde, holding out her hand for Bonnie to shake.

"Nice to meet you," Bonnie told her and then took her hand. The moment their skin touched, she watched as the girl's eyes widened softly and a breath hitched in her throat.

Reid, who has just picked up his beer bottle, yelped when it cracked in half. "Shit!"

It was Caleb who acted, pulling the girl from Sarah's grasp. Tyler took over from Caleb, who turned to his girlfriend and nodded towards the outside. He wanted to talk. About what, she didn't know but she followed behind him as they weaved through the crowd. She glanced back at the group, Reid had gone off to get another round of beers, while Pogue and Kate were leading Bonnie to a table. Tyler never left the girl's side, his hand on the small of her back.

Was he sure he didn't have a crush on her?

Once outside, the couple stood facing each other. Caleb looked like he wanted to say something, but clamped up.

Okay, she mused, that wasn't like him at all.

"So that's Bonnie," she started, leaving it open for him to make small talk.

He just nodded his head.

Alright then. "She seems nice, a little jumpy though."

Caleb was as silent as a grave. Sarah huffed to herself. The girl was a bit skittish, but that wasn't going to stop the blonde from trying to make friends with her.

"You know, you dragged me out here," she pointed out, trying one more time to get his attention.

It seemed to get him to start talking. "Yeah, um...I just..." he trailed off for a moment and then exhaled a curse.

How was this hard for him? What had happened in Virginia?

"Caleb," she said, a tinge of worry in her voice. "Baby you're worrying me here. Is there something I need to know?"

He looked over at her, brown eyes deep and sad and filled with guilt.

So something had happened.

"I need to tell you something," he said, his voice somber.

Sarah felt a weight drop into the center of her gut and keep her planted for the ground. Something told her she was not going to like this at all.

Tyler was rubbing circles along her back. The beer in her hand was still frosty and cold, a freshly chilled one from Nicky. Kate and Pogue had gone to order some food for her; bacon wrapped jalapeƱo peppers and twice fried mozzarella cheese sticks.

Bonnie knew she shouldn't be eating that. Caroline had them on a strict diet as cheerleaders, but Kate had promised to go running with her and even do some cheerleading workouts with her while she was in town.

Thinking of the blonde, she reached for her phone, and shot a quick text to her to let her know that she has made it to Ipswich safely. She and Matt were the only ones outside of her father who knew were she really was.

She was in no mood to speak to Elena.

"You sure you're okay?" Tyler asked, for the fifth time since she had been cornered away. The first three had been when he was leading her to the table. Even Pogue had told him to chill out.

"Baby Boy I'm fine," she promised and leaned in, kissing his cheek. It was sweet that he cared.

He was close to smiling but it faltered just as quickly as it happened. Bonnie frowned at that. Tyler was a puppy, and he loved the affection Bonnie and Reid showered on him. She has expected him to fluster and get bashful. Instead he looked like he was committing a war crime.

"Ty?"

"Sorry, just got something on my mind," he said quickly; a bit too quickly.

"You all good now, Bonnibee?" Reid asked as he came up with his and Tyler's beers. He pressed another kiss to the crown of her head.

"I'm fine, Malfoy," she said with a bit of cheek.

"I'll have you know I am way hotter than Tom Felton," Reid said, taking offense to her nickname. But it was all in good fun, as he leaned in and this time pecked her cheek. The trio knew Aaron was still looking at them. And it was a act they put on simply because Reid and Tyler hated how the older man leered at Bonnie even in plain view of his girlfriend.

"Sure you are," she said with a wave of her hand. Her eyes pinned the two with a determined look. "Now what the hell are you two not telling me?"

"Depends," Reid countered, pausing to take a sip of his beer. "Are you gonna tell us about what you saw?"

"I didn't see anything," she denied.

"Now that right there is a lie," Tyler pointed out and then grabbed at the basket of food Pogue and Kate had brought.

"What's a lie?" Kate asked.

"Bonnie said she didn't see anything," Reid told them. Kate knew of Bonnie being a witch, the Sons had told her about Bonnie and their powers a few hours before Bonnie had returned.

Bonnie looked at the girl in fear. "You know?"

"Oh yeah," Kate told her and winked. "Your secret is safe with me, Bon."

Bonnie's smile was soft and filled with gratitude. Kate had always had her back before she knew about her powers, and how she was going to take this secret to her grave.

"Now, what did you see?"

"Et tu, Kate?" Bonnie pressed a hand over her chest, false concern written across her face. It wasn't lost on the little witch that she was trying to play on her heartstrings.

"Watch out for those eyes Kate," Reid warned, leaning into the brunette. His lips were pulled up into a smile. "She's trying to get you to change the subject."

"She used to do it all the time when she didn't want to talk about Caleb," Pogue smirked at her.

Bonnie turned her head, taking one of the baskets of food Reid had swiped. Caleb was always a sore subject even among the Sons.

"Come on Bonnibee," Reid said, poking her shoulder.

She answered him by stuffing a popper in her mouth and flipping the finger. Her response seemed to start off a chain reaction. Pogue grinned before taking a swig of his beer, while Kate and Tyler started laughing. Reid looked appalled at the gesture, but he was quick to recover.

The blond moved, grabbing hold of the cheerleader by her hips and then hurling her over his shoulder. Bonnie let out a scream, her hands moving to keep her dress from flipping but Reid kept a steady hand on her legs to keep it secure.

"Get ready to regret that Bennett," the middle Son warned her and then started into a run out of Nicky's. The others just sat there, knowing full well that Reid wouldn't go far. Besides, it would do good to have Bonnie smile. Pogue did reach out to pat Tyler on the shoulder though.

"She'll be fine," he promised though it was empty to the youngest Son.

They walked a good few blocks from Nicky's like that. Anyone who passed said absolutely nothing about one of the Ipswich's own prominent sons walking around the cloudy evening with a squirming teenager over his shoulder. Reid only hung around five people in his life, recently six with the addition of Caleb's girlfriend. They all knew the girl on his shoulder was the Bennett girl. She came every summer though it was a bit of a sight to see her in the middle of fall.

Reid turned into the park, ignoring Bonnie's fists, thought he had to give it to her. Pogue was going to have fun giving her some new lessons.

"Reid if you don't put me down--" Bonnie cut off with a yelp as Reid dropped her into a puddle of rainwater and then she let out an even louder cry of frustration at the state of her dress. It was a welcoming gift from Evelyn and now it was wet. Angry with her pseudo brother, Bonnie moved to get up when she found herself weighed down by magic, and she peered up to see Reid's eyes were black.

"Let me up," she demanded.

With a shake of his head, Reid bent down and plopped right into the puddle with her. A wave of his hand followed and the two found themselves dry and unnerved by the water. He gave one last spell to warm them and keep them dry in case any of dark clouds overhead tried to release some rain.

A moment passed between them before Reid slipped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer to him. Bonnie stole a glance up at him, her anger fading when she saw the tears in his eyes.

"You miss her," she breathed out and he gave a curt nod before moving to bury his face in her hair.

"I'm sorry," he murmured into the crown on her head.

Bonnie sighed and then wrapped her arms around his waist.

"You didn't have to make a big scene you know," she murmured into his shirt.

"I know," he said.

"And you got Aunt Evelyn's gift wet and dirty,"

"I know,"

"And you're a big baby,"

Reid held her tighter. "Bonnie just shut up and let me hug you."

She smiled at him. "Alright," she shrugged, "but can you move us to a bench at least?"

Reid chuckled, "Sure, just give me a second."

Bonnie nodded. Once they were situated on the bench, she'd start asking him about Sarah and hopefully about the one claiming to the Fifth Son of Ipswich. It would be something to get her mind off her Grams.
