Kathani was riding on a horse, feeling exhilarated after being trapped on that ship for six months. She picked up her speed, not caring about anything that was going to happen. Suddenly, she heard someone calling out to her. "Miss, are you alright?!"
Kathani ignored him, but the man began to chase her. 'He wants to race?" Kathani laughed and looked behind her, and sure enough, the man was still trying to catch up with her. Both of them picked up their speed, and as she saw the hedge ahead, the man's voice cautioned her. "Careful there!"
But she jumped anyway and then finally made her horse stop to turn and stare at her opponent, her handsome opponent, who looked breathless as he smiled at her. As Kathani left in pride, she felt her heart fluttering against her chest.
With a gasp, Kathani opened her eyes as she remembered a strange dream that involved horseback riding and Anthony. "Kathani, get up; we have our meeting schedule with the Duke of Hastings at exactly 9 a.m.
Kathani's mind was still reeling from her dream. "Have you ever had strange dreams about a handsome guy you just met last night?" Sophia stopped midway, opening all the curtains, as she stared at her friend. "We just arrived here last night; when did you find time to meet handsome guys and have dreams about them?" Kathani smiled dreamily as she recalled details about her handsome Viscount. Sophia stared at her friend in awe, who was still daydreaming about her Viscount. "Back to earth, Kathani. If Amma finds out that you kissed a British man, then both of us will get scolding of the lifetime."
"Amma will endure; besides, I cannot wait to meet my sexy Viscount again." Sophia shakes her head before making her friend get up. "Let's deal with our Duke first, then we will search for your sexy Viscount." So with that, Kathani began to dress for her meeting with the Duke of Hastings.
Kathani and Sophia arrived at Hastings house on time. The Duke secretary greeted them as he took them into the sitting room. "Wait here, Miss Iyer; His Grace will see you in a moment." Kathani nodded her head as she and Sophia looked around.
There were many portraits of previous Dukes and Duchesses, but one portrait got Kathani's attention. It was a beautiful woman sitting in a chair while a tall, dark, handsome man stood by her shoulder with one hand on it. The way they stared at each other, it was the same kind of love she always sees in her Amma and Appa's eyes. There was a plaque underneath with names on it. "Duke Simon Bassett Hastings, Duchess Daphne Hastings. Painted by Sir Henry Granville, 1813."
"I see you take a liking to the second Duke and Duchess of Hastings." Kathani turned around and saw a handsome man walking towards them who looked quite similar to the man in the portrait. The secretary stepped forward to make an introduction. "This is famous historical photographer Miss Kathani Iyer and her assistant, Miss Sophia Bennett, and this is His Grace Duke Alfie Hastings."
Both Kathani and Sophia curtsied him, but the man stopped him. "Please, there is no need to curtsy; shaking hands will suffice." He shook both ladies hands and offered them a seat. Once settled, the Duke of Hastings began. "Miss Iyer, I am truly impressed with your recent coverage of Florence and Norway; in fact, in our latest diplomatic conference, the Norwegian minister was praising your skills that had boosted their tourism, and I am hoping you can do the same magic for Mayfair."
Kathani smiled at being praised, but she couldn't keep her curiosity at bay. "His Grace, if you do not mind, can you tell me what is so special about Mayfair? I mean, as far as I know, that part of old London was once a living place for elites in Regency times, but its history seems to suddenly disappear after the great London fire of 1814."
Duke Alfie looked saddened by this question as he stared at the same portrait of his ancestors that earlier caught Kathani's eye. "Mayfair holds a special place in my family's hearts. You see, the second Duchess, whose name was Daphne, used to live there; in fact, she was the Diamond of her season and later married my great-great-grandfather Simon, who was Duke of Hastings in those times."
"So Mayfair is special because it holds familial value?" Sophia inquires, and Duke lets out deep chuckles. "It's not just that; Mayfair is special in its own way; for instance, if you go there, you will feel frozen in time." Kathani and Sophia gaped at him as he stood up. "Trust me, ladies, it's better you see it for yourself because only then will you understand what I mean."
"Will you not join us?" Kathani inquired feeling perplexed but Duke gave her sad smile as he says. "I wish I could and hopefully one day I will but for now here is car keys for your personal use. I hope you enjoy your trip here." With that, Duke of Hastings left, leaving two baffled girls behind as they tried to understand what kind of job they had landed into.
As they were about to leave, the secretary gave her a paper map for directions to Mayfair. "Used this to find your way because once you are near the area, your app will be of no use as satellite do not work there. Also park your car outside the borders of Mayfair because it will not go ahead inside the Mayfair."
Kathani and Sophia stared at each other as the secretary gave each of them pouches of coins. "Used this if you used carriage or bought anything because Morden age currency will not work there." Sophia blinked as Kathani opened her pouch and surveyed the old-looking coins inside it. "Excuse me? What are these?"
"Currency of Regency Times" With that, he left, leaving both girls with so many questions. "Come, Sophia, let's see for ourselves what is so special about this place."
Kathani and Sophia get inside the car and begin to drive towards their destination. It was not that far from Hastings house because, as soon as they neared the borders, the app stopped working, just like the secretary warned them. "Let me check the map." But Kathani stared at the woods and recognised them from her dreams. "I swear I saw these woods in my dream." Sophia tried to find a spot, but Kathani was instinctively driving as if she knew these paths by heart.
At exactly the same moment, in another part of London, a bottle of milk dropped from Anthony's hand. Newton barked because he felt his master distress, whose head was now filled with vision of his Kathani driving towards that cursed place.
"Stop! Do not go there!"
Kathani lost control of her car as once again she heard a voice in her head, but thankfully Sophia grabbed the wheels and Kathani pushed the break, stopping the car. Both girls were gasping in shock as Sophia turned to face her friend. "What happened to you?" Kathani shook her head as she noticed something. "I am fine, and look, we are here."
Sure enough, there was a huge sign for Mayfair, and both girls got out of the car and started walking towards it. Kathani was about to step inside when a desperate voice reached her ears. "Please stop!" Yet, shaking her head, Kathani decided to proceed inside.
Anthony watched in his mind how he failed to stop her. He ruffled Newton's fur to try to calm himself down, but he knew who was behind this. "I think it's time to visit my family."
Kathani and Sophia finally realise what is so special about Mayfair after all, and while Kathani was fascinated by what she was seeing, Sophia was spooked as she observed her surroundings. "It looks like we stepped into the Regency version of "the village." I mean, how can they live like 18th-century people when there are so many awesome things from the 21stcentury?"
"Do not be rude, Sophia; it is not unheard of for some people to preserve their heritage." Kathani defended herself, as few people keep staring at her and welcome them sweetly, especially her. "Welcome to Mayfair, sweet girl. Can we invite you for tea?"
"Some other time." Sophia quickly interjected, as she refused the third invitation before they excused themselves. "Did you see what she was wearing, and what's up with these tea invitations? Who invites strangers into their house?"
Kathani shook her head as another family stopped her path. The woman and young ladies were dressed in appalling citrus shades as they stared at her. "Bless my lucky stars! Is it truly you?"
Thinking they were also her fans, Kathani tries to smile as two other girls stare at her and Sophia's dress. "I must say outside-world clothing is getting shorter by the day."
The older woman gasps in horror and scolds the girl. "Prudence! Please do not be rude to our guests, especially special guests like her. I am extremely sorry; my daughter does not mean any offence. Please forgive my family."
Kathani could see how fearful that woman suddenly looked, so she tried to comfort her. "It's alright, I do not mind your daughter at all, and I think these colours on you are quite eye-catching." The woman sighed in relief and invited them for tea, but this time Kathani politely declined. "Some other time, aside from now, I will be visiting Mayfair a lot for my work."
"That's really great news! Please stop by Featherington House any time you want; our house is always open for you." Sophia smirked at her friend as she nudged her side. "It looks like you are already popular in Mayfair."
Kathani smiled as introductions were made along with promises to see her soon. Just as the family was leaving, the youngest daughter turned around and warned them in a low voice. "Please, Miss Iyer, no matter what happens, promise me you will stay away from the beggars of Mayfair."
"I beg your pardon." Kathani began, but Portia Featherington's voice disturbed them. 'Penelope! Make haste!" "Coming mama!" Penelope calls back before warning again in a low voice. "Please remember to stay away from the beggars of Mayfair."
With that, Penelope left, and Sophia was definitely getting spooked as she grabbed Kathani's hand. "Let's leave Kathani; we will return some other day."
So with that, both girls left Mayfair, and as they walked back towards the outside, Kathani could feel everyone's eyes on her as they stared at her with both hope and fear.
It was late in the evening when Alfie returned home, feeling optimistic that he would find success that his predecessors were unable to find. He was about to pour himself a drink when suddenly the lights were switched off, and then a candle was lit, showing a lone figure sitting in his armchair staring at him. "You should not have meddled in my affairs, boy, although I should thank you for bringing her to me this time."
Instead of being afraid, Alfie calmly stared at the man as he replied. "You are forgetting that aside from Hastings blood, there is also Bridgerton blood running through my veins, and it's in our nature to meddle in our family affairs, is it not? Great uncle Anthony?"
He watched as Anthony Bridgerton laughed and stood up to face him in dark. "It's amazing how each one of you reminds me of both Hastings and my sister, but I will tell you, boy, what I told your ancestors before you, and that is that no matter how much you or anyone else tries, those people will never get forgiveness or freedom from me." With that, Anthony Bridgerton stepped forward into light, and Alfie gasped to see his eyes completely black, with no whites in them, as red veins etched beneath them and two pointed fangs peaked from his mouth. "Consider this my ultimate decision, boy, and for your sake, stay away from my Kathani; otherwise, I will forgive whose blood runs in your veins as I dry it up."
"Uncle Anthony, please listen to me!" Alfie begged, but suddenly the lights were lit, and he found himself alone in the room with that candle light burning out as smoke disappeared in the air, just like his uncle.
