"You didn't tell Angela, right?" Cory asked, pulling Topanga outside to his backyard. He had the feeling that Angela had been glaring at him all night. It was unsettling. She had no reason to glare at him, unless Topanga told her something.
"Of course not," Topanga lied convincingly. Of course she told Angela. Seeing as Angela was her only female friend after being surrounded by so much testosterone for a decade, she confided in her things that neither Cory nor Shawn would understand. However, she did not expect Angela to take the news as poorly as she did, especially the engagement. "Did you tell Shawn?"
"What? Me? Tell Shawn? No way," Cory lied, however his rather nervous state practically gave it away. Thankfully for him, Topanga was in her own little world of worries to realize that Cory had indeed told Shawn everything.
"Okay, then what are we standing around here for? Let's go back inside," Topanga ordered. She didn't want to be gone too long from dinner with the Matthews. That would suspicious. So Cory and Topanga headed back to the dinner table where Mr. Feeny, Shawn, Angela, Morgan, Alan and Amy all sat.
"Cory, Shawn was telling us the wonderful news," Alan began.
"You told them?" Cory asked looking at Shawn. He couldn't believe his friend. He had promised not to say anything. Topanga was going to kill him. And from that look in her eyes, he knew he was a dead man.
"You told Shawn?!" Topanga questioned.
"You knew?!" Angela asked her boyfriend. Shawn just shrugged, he was far more interested to see how this played out.
"Of course I told Shawn," Cory explained. He turned to his awfully calm father. "You aren't mad?"
"No, your mother and I are thrilled. Truthfully, we'd always knew this day would come," Alan explained.
Cory was did not know his father had that much faith in him, but it finally allowed him to sit down and relax in his seat. "That could not have gone any better," Cory admitted to Topanga as she sat alongside her fiancée.
"Yeah, we always knew Shawn had it in him. Look at you two, both going on to college together," Alan praised. Shawn may have been a kid from the wrong side of the tracks, but Alan was impressed with how the mischievous kid he once knew grew up to be an incredible young man.
"Shawn's going to Pennbrook?" Topanga asked. She assumed he was traveling the world to take pictures, but seeing as he would be alongside her and Cory during this special time in their life was reassuring. She turned to Cory. "Why didn't you tell me about this?"
"Well, you see-" Cory began, but was cut off by Eric barging into the kitchen.
Immediately sensing something was wrong, Eric did what he did best - he opened his mouth. "What's with all the tension. So what if Cory proposed to Topanga because she's pregnant. People do stuff like that all the time. At least he's taking responsibility for it, right, Dad?" Eric commented, patting his father on the back.
"Eric!" Cory yelled. How did he know? First it was Shawn, now Eric.
Eric looked around the room and by the shocked expressions on everyone's faces minus a smirk from Shawn, he could tell that he may have just spilled Cory and Topanga's secret. He figured everyone knew based off the tension and the fact that Eric heard Cory tell Shawn back at the apartment. "Was I not supposed to say anything?" Eric asked.
"Cory, honey, please tell me that Eric is wrong," Amy asked calmly, not fully believing the truth.
Cory stood up from the table with Topanga at his side. "Mom, Dad. Topanga and I are going to have a baby and we're getting married," Cory admitted with his arm wrapped around Topanga.
"What?!" Alan asked raising his voice.
"You're going to have a baby?" Amy implored, much more softly than her husband.
"We weren't planning for it to happen, but it did and we're taking responsibility for it," Cory tried to explain.
"By getting married?! Why would you do that?" Alan questioned.
"Because they love each other," Shawn piped in trying to help his friends out.
"That's not a reason," Angela argued. "They are too young." When Topanga confided her engagement and pregnancy to Angela, Angela could have taken it better. She was surprised to say the least. Topanga was valedictorian of their class. How was she smart enough for that but not about protection? A marriage this young wouldn't solve anything, especially the baby.
"I think this is my cue to leave," Feeny said, standing with his plate and leaving the Matthews' residence to finish his meal in his own home. He'd return the plate later once everything boiled down.
"We're trying to do the right thing," Cory explained.
"The right thing? The right thing was not to get her pregnant. How could you be so stupid?" Alan implored. He thought he taught Cory better than this. "This is all your fault."
Topanga felt bad for Cory, who was on the receiving end of his parent's anger. She had to cut in. "If I may, Cory isn't the only one to blame. We are both responsible for this and are trying to do our best," Topanga said.
"No, this is my fault. I should have known better and I asked her to marry me," Cory argued. He refused to let his fiancée have to deal with his parents. When they plan to tell her parents that will be all Topanga.
"Topanga, I thought you had more sense than this," Amy admitted. She loved her son, but Topanga was the smarter one out of the two of them. She did not understand how Topanga would let this happen. "Have you even began to think of the responsibility that comes with this?"
"No, they haven't," Angela interjected, crossing her arms.
"We've had to pay for everything. Your food. Your clothes. Your diapers. Your phone. Your car insurance. Do you think you can handle that?" Alan asked, trying to reason with his son.
"Can everybody calm down! I think I could be the voice of reason, here," Eric said, once again reminding everyone that he was in the room and caused this whole mess. They all shared a look with one another and started to laugh, Eric included. But Eric quickly disposed of their laughter. "I think they should get married."
"Amen!" Shawn agreed.
"Eric, stop it," Alan said.
Eric strode over to the two lovers and forced himself to stand in between the two of them. He then wrapped his arms around his brother and Topanga. "The chances that Cory could find a woman like Topanga are one in a million," Eric began.
"Hey!" Cory objected.
"Shut it," Eric ordered, placing his hand over his brother's mouth. "And Pangers here is pregnant. Who else would want her?"
"Eric!" Topanga yelled, offended by his words.
"Look, they're perfect together and have been since kindergarten. We all knew this was going to happen, just maybe not this soon," Eric finished.
"And it's not like they're going to be alone through this whole thing," Shawn stated. "They'll have us. Helping them every step of the way. Right?" Shawn looked at Angela, hoping she would understand and support Topanga and Cory through this difficult time.
"Right," Angela smiled.
Alan and Amy looked at each other, realizing that they may have overreacted. "I guess we were a little harsh, Alan," Amy began. "I mean, we acted just like our parents did when we told them we were getting married." Amy turned to face her son and Topanga. She placed a hand on both of their cheeks lovingly. "We support you and your decision to get married. We'll be here every step of the way. And we can't wait to meet our grandchild."
