Once Cory got the call from his mother that Topanga went into labor, he fainted. After his father and Feeny got him back to his feet, the five of them, Eric and Jack included, raced over to the hospital to meet the newest member of the Matthews family. All the while, Jack was trying to get ahold of his younger brother, Shawn.
Stopping at the first nurse he saw, Cory began, "I'm Cory Matthews. My fiancée Topanga Lawrence is having a baby-"
"Cory!" His mother called over, gaining his attention.
Cory turned away from the nurse and ran over towards his mother. "Where is she?" He asked.
"She's just past those doors," Amy directed her son. "They're prepping her for C-section."
"But that wasn't apart of our birth plan," Cory explained. Topanga had made Cory memorize their birth plan down to a T. She wanted to have it all natural and she strictly said no C-section.
"I know, but the baby isn't in the right position," Amy explained. She saw the worry spread across Cory's face. "Hey, everything is going to be alright. Now go see Topanga."
Cory smiled and headed straight for the operating room. Once he was scrubbed up, he rushed to Topanga's side. "Cory?" She asked.
"I'm here," Cory assured her, placing a kiss on her forehead. "Are you ready to have our baby?" Topanga nodded as Cory stood by his fiancée's side holding her hand.
"Alright, Topanga, you're gonna feel some movement. The nurse right here is going to help me out," the doctor instructed.
Cory tried not to look over the curtain in fear of passing out again. His head still hurt from Eric and Jack's apartment floor. He just stood by Topanga's side, holding her hand as they waited to hear any news regarding their baby.
That's when they heard it.
A soft cry.
"Topanga, we did it," Cory cheered, kissing his fiancée.
"It's a boy," the doctor informed the couple.
"A boy?" Topanga asked. She and Cory thought they were going to have a baby girl first, but nonetheless they were happy to have their son.
"Would you like to cut the cord, Dad?" The doctor asked Cory.
Cory was hesitant. He released his grip on Topanga and with his freed hands, he was handed the scissors to cut where the nurse indicated. Once done, she placed the newly swaddled baby boy in Cory's hands to show Topanga.
"Topanga, look at him," Cory said in awe.
"He's perfect," Topanga said. She was about to reach out her hand to touch her son for the first time when her son was abruptly taken from Cory.
"Doctor, his breathing is irregular," the nurse informed the doctor, carrying the infant away.
"Where are you taking him?" Cory asked.
"The Neonatal ICU. Cory, you can follow her there," the doctor explained as she was trying to stitch Topanga back up.
"Intensive care?" Topanga asked worriedly. Her son was just born and he was absolutely perfect. Though her pregnancy had its challenging moments, she did not think it was anything to be worried about. Nothing that warranted an immediate visited to the NICU.
"It's okay," Cory assured. He wasn't sure what to expect. Ever since his mother informed him that Topanga was getting a C-section he had this bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. Cory wondered if this was what he was feeling from earlier. "I'll be right back. I love you."
"I love you, too. Please bring him back," Topanga said as Cory followed the nurse out of the operating room and into the NICU.
Outside in the waiting room, everyone gathered around hoping to hear an update regarding Topanga and Cory's baby.
"I didn't miss it did I?" Shawn asked out of breath. When he received Jack's message that Topanga went into labor, Shawn cut his road trip short and disobeyed every speed limit to get to the hospital on time. Cory needed him.
"No, not yet, Mr. Hunter," Feeny informed him. "You're right on time."
Cory walked out into the waiting room and was immediately met by everybody there. His mind was all over the place that it didn't even register for him that Shawn had made it back in time.
"What's the verdict, Daddy?" Shawn asked smiling. Cory was silent for a moment trying to gather his thoughts. His family and friends could tell that something wasn't right based solely on his demeanor alone.
"I only got to hold him for a minute," Cory began. He avoided everyone's gaze and kept looking at the ground. He was on the verge of tears. "He's not breathing on his own, so they put him on a respirator. They don't know if he's gonna..." One by one their hearts broke for Cory and Topanga. Cory was trying so hard to be strong and not cry, but he couldn't help it. "He's just so small, so helpless. We haven't even picked out a name yet."
Amy was the first to step out from the crowd. She held her son in her arms as he cried into her shoulder. "Shhh, everything's going to be alright," she soothed. Truthfully, Amy did not know how it was all going to play out, but she had faith that Cory and Topanga's baby would be just fine.
"How am I gonna tell Topanga?" Cory cried.
Shawn couldn't believe what he was hearing. His own godson was there at the same hospital his father was at months prior, fighting for his life. He lost his father. He wasn't going to lose his grandson.
"Can we see him?" Morgan asked. Like everyone else, she was just as terrified. That was her baby nephew. She didn't want anything bad to happen to him.
Cory wiped his tears away and ignored Morgan. "I have to see Topanga," he said almost robotically, before walking away towards Topanga's room.
"Alan, what are we going to do?" Amy asked. Her grandson's life was hanging on by a thread.
"I don't know, Amy. I don't know," Alan admitted. He had had three children of his own, but he had never been more scared in his life than in this exact moment.
Shawn pushed past Feeny, Eric, and Jack in a hurry and followed the path to Topanga's room. This couldn't be happening, he had to do something. Sitting around would get them absolutely nowhere.
After wandering around aimlessly to find Topanga's room, he eventually found her lying on a hospital bed with a notepad in her hands as Cory sat in the chair next to her. "Hey, mama. How you holding up?" Shawn asked, leaning against the doorframe.
"I could be doing better, considering all of this," Topanga said. She had to be the strong one between her and Cory. When Cory found her and broke the news to her about their son, he shut down. Whatever she tried, she could not get through to him. He had been non-responsive to her ever since. "Will you please talk to him? I can't get through to him right now, you're his best friend, he'll listen to you."
"Okay, let me handle this," Shawn said, entering the room. He moved over towards Cory and sat in the chair next to his best friend. "Man we're gonna have fun with this kid!"
Seemingly taking Cory out of his funk, even if for a moment, Cory grinned. "This kid's going to be our slave," Cory said.
"Cory Matthews!" Topanga reprimanded. "I will not let you treat our child like that."
Shawn and Cory both looked at each other and said in agreement, "Hormones." Topanga rolled her eyes and focused back to the writing on her notepad.
"I'm going to teach this kid everything I know. How to talk to girls. How to Hotwire a car," Shawn listed.
"Then I'll bail him out of jail," Cory laughed.
"I can't believe I'm hearing this," Topanga mumbled.
"Who knows, maybe when he's at school he'll have a kid like me to sit next to," Shawn suggested.
"Well he won't have to," Cory said.
"Why not?" Shawn questioned.
"Because you'll still be there," Cory said erupting in a fit of laughter with his best friend.
Once they calmed down, Shawn tried to pry. "So when can I meet the little guy?" Shawn asked.
Cory's gaze cast down to the ground, but was forced to look up when he heard a knocking at Topanga's door. "May I come in?" The doctor asked.
"Come in," Topanga invited. Cory stood from his chair and went to stand by his fiancée.
"The medicine we tried on your son isn't working, the only one who can fight for his life is him. I'm so sorry," the doctor said before exiting the room.
Shawn saw his friends appear absolutely broken. This was not how this day was supposed to go. Shawn left the hospital room and headed straight down to the NICU. He scrubbed up and went in search of Baby Matthews.
Shawn couldn't help but notice how small he was. Poor kid. Shawn stood by the bed that held his godson and spoke to him for the first time. "Hi Baby Matthews, I'm your Uncle Shawn. Or you could just call me Shawn. Look, this is the second time I've been in a hospital this year and I don't really like the way the first one turned out, so I want you to listen to me. I've been out of town. I went looking to see what was important in my life. I met a lot of people out of town that were looking for the same thing. And I came back here because I want to tell you something. Don't go out of town. Don't go anywhere. Life is right here with these people, with your family. And my family. We got the greatest family there is. We want you to be with us so we can watch you grow and see you change and make great memories together."
"That was beautiful, Shawnie," Cory said as he wheeled in Topanga to the NICU to visit their son.
"How long have you guys been standing there?" Shawn asked turning around to face his friends.
"Long enough," Topanga smiled.
Shawn looked down at the baby's name plate. "I see you still haven't named him," Shawn noticed.
"We haven't heard what you had to say. Everyone gave their suggestions, except you," Cory explained. Topanga handed Cory her notepad to give to Shawn. On it there were a handful of names scribbled on by everyone else.
Shawn looked back down at his godson. None of the names on the list seemed to fit him just right. Taking on last glance at the baby, Shawn smiled and wrote down one name before handing the notepad back to Topanga.
"Joshua Gabriel Matthews," Topanga read.
"Gabriel means 'he who God protects,'" Shawn explained.
"I like," Cory said.
"Me too," Topanga agreed.
Shawn smiled.
"And with an uncle like you, he's going to be fine," Cory promised. Though it may have seemed bleak and like all hope was lost, it was in that moment that the three of them knew they would be just fine.
