"Is Shawn home?" Katy asked, once Topanga opened the front door.
It had been a week since Shawn and her had their argument at the diner. She hadn't seen him since. The only reason she knew he was back in town was because Cory paid her a visit the other day. Well, technically not her, rather he stopped at the diner when she was working.
She had been feeling guilty about the whole situation and wanted to explain herself more rationally and possibly more truthfully. Kermit still hadn't returned home. Katy began to question her marriage after almost two weeks of radio silence on Kermit's part.
"Let me go check," Topanga gulped, shutting the door on Katy.
She could not believe her eyes. Shawn hadn't told her much about what happened with Katy the day they left for Philly, but from what she heard from Cory, they had a huge fight. That's all Cory told her. She had pressured him for more information, but apparently his relationship with Shawn meant more to him than her marriage.
No surprise there.
She expected nothing different. It was just frustrating.
Cory walked down the stairs humming a tune after putting Josh down to bed for the night.
Topanga ran over to him. "You will not believe who is at our front door asking for Shawn," Topanga said.
"A stripper?" Cory asked. It was the first thing that came to his mind and sounded the most Shawn-like. Unfortunately, that meant he was entitled to a Topanga slap for the answer. "Ow!"
"Cory Matthews!" Topanga scolded. "No, it's not a stripper. Katy's here and she's looking for Shawn. How did she even get our address?"
"Katy's here?!" Cory yelled loud enough for Katy to hear him outside the apartment. She knew they had to be talking about her in there. It was taking a while for Shawn to answer. She figured that Shawn probably told them about what happened. "We have to warn Shawn."
"Have to warn me what, Cor?" Shawn asked taking the path down the stairs Cory took moments earlier.
"You? Warn you? Nah, you must've misheard. I said we have to mourn, Shawn. It's Nana Boo-Boo. Nana Boo-Boo just died," Cory lied. Whenever put under immense pressure, he dug himself into an outrageous, fabricated lie.
Topanga hoped Shawn would see right through it, but alas Shawn was as dumb as his counterpart. All Cory had to do was pout and fake a few tears and Shawn believed him wholeheartedly.
"Nana Boo-Boo died?" Shawn asked. He had only met the woman a handful of times and his experiences with her were less than pleasant, but Cory obviously felt sadness over her death. He had to comfort his friend in his time of need. "Oh my god, Cory, I'm so sorry for your loss. Why don't we go down to that restaurant you like and take all the rolls?"
Cory nervously smiled. That sounded really appealing, he was in the mood for some rolls. "They want you to take the rolls."
Topanga had enough of this. She had to step in. "Shawn, Nana Boo-Boo isn't dead," Topanga clarified.
"What? Of course she is. Cory wouldn't have to mourn unless she wasn't," Shawn argued. He knew people dealt with grief differently, he just hadn't expected Topanga to be the denial type.
"Cory, please explain it to him," Topanga urged.
Cory tried to make sounds come out of his mouth but gibberish came out instead. He deferred to Topanga instead and hid behind her.
"Katy's at the door," Topanga explained. "She's asking for you."
"Katy?" Shawn asked. He assumed that he misheard. There was no way Katy Hart was at his door. The argument they had was explosive, but Katy wasn't wrong. All the points she made for valid. He just wasn't ready to admit that to himself.
Topanga nodded.
Shawn contemplated his next move. He could either be the bigger person and see what she wanted to say or ignore her completely. The latter option seemed the most appealing, but Shawn knew he would regret it if he brushed her off.
"Hi, Shawn," Katy greeted when Shawn opened the door. As time wore on waiting, she started to think that no one would answer.
Instead a pleasantries, Shawn went to the crux of it all. "What are you doing here Katy?" Shawn asked.
"I was hoping we could talk," Katy said. Shawn sent a glare Topanga and Cory's way. The two of them took the hint and ran upstairs. Those two were extremely nosy. If he was going to talk to Katy, he wanted to do it alone.
"Come right in." Shawn opened the door wider, inviting her into the apartment. He closed the door behind her as she settled onto the couch. "Could I get you anything to drink?"
"No thank you, I'm good. I just finished my shift at the diner." Katy fidgeted with the hem of her uniform. "I'm sorry. I overreacted the other day. There was just a lot going on that you wouldn't understand."
Shawn softened. He did not expect an apology from her when it should have been him apologizing. Typically Shawn would use that to his advantage, but with Katy it was different. He didn't want her to take the blame. "Katy, you have nothing to be sorry about," Shawn insisted. "I overstepped my boundaries."
"It was a thoughtful and kind gesture, one that I should have taken advantage of. It probably would have beat Christmas alone in New York."
"When does Kermit get back?" Shawn asked, sliding next to her on the couch.
"I don't know," Katy began to cry. She reached for a tissue next to the couch to dry her eyes. "I haven't seen him in almost two weeks. He left."
"He left you?"
"I don't know. We got into an argument and at the end of it he walked out. When you invited me along, Kermit had been already gone for a few days. I needed to be home in case he returned. He never did though."
Shawn wrapped his arm around Katy and hugged her. He knew what it was like to be left time and time again. This could not have been easy for her. He regretted blowing up at her in the diner, she had more pressing matters to deal with at home.
"I'm so sorry-"
"Please don't pity me."
"I wasn't going to. I know exactly how you feel."
Katy looked incredulously at Shawn. "You do?"
Shawn breathed contemplating whether or not he should say anything. He probably said more than what he intended to say. "Everyone important to me has left. My birth mom, my mom, my dad, and my ex-girlfriend. The only people who remained constants are Cory and Topanga. That's why I value them so much. I value the people who stayed and keep them close to me."
"Shawn, I didn't know." But it explained a lot for Katy. It clicked why he followed Cory and Topanga wherever they went. He didn't want to get left behind again.
"That's because I never told you." Shawn never let anyone into his tragic backstory. He didn't want the pity much like Katy had said.
They sat in silence and just stared at one another. It reminded him of the times he was with Angela, when they would sit in complete silence and bask in each other. Those small moments were some of his favorites.
Katy stared back at Shawn with dried tears around her eyes. She closed the distance between them and kissed Shawn lightly. All she wanted was one kiss to shake away the feelings that she had been growing towards him.
Unfortunately, those feelings did not dissipate.
Fortunately, Shawn placed his hand on the back of her head gently and continued the kiss, pulling her in for more.
They both knew what they were doing was wrong. For one, she was still married though her heart started to betray her. Second, this could only be a one-time thing. Third, Shawn was leaving tomorrow. He wanted to catch an early flight and settle down in England before the New Year, since his assignment began January 1st. He had been meaning to tell her all of this, but the conversation went in another direction instead.
Slowly, he positioned himself on top of Katy, continuing the kiss. Both knew they were headed into uncharted territory together. Neither one of them cared.
They were living in the moment.
Some might call it reckless spontaneity.
