Chapter 2: Celebrations and Competitions
The streets of San Antonio were alive with excitement as Jasper and Billy wandered through the city. The air was thick with the scent of cooking food and the sound of laughter. As they turned a corner, a brightly colored flyer caught their eye. "Well, I'll be," Billy said, snatching the paper from the wall. "Looks like we picked a fine time to roll into town. The 4th of July celebration is tomorrow!" Jasper leaned in to read the flyer over Billy's shoulder. His eyes skimmed over the schedule, taking in the various events planned for the day. A slow grin spread across his face as he spotted two particular items. "A rodeo and a horse race, huh?" Jasper mused, his mind already working. He turned to Billy, a glint of excitement in his eyes. "What do you say we see just how fast that chestnut mare of mine really is?" Billy's eyebrows shot up. "You want to enter the race? With a $50 horse?" Jasper shrugged, trying to hide his amusement. "Why not? She's got spirit, that one. And I've got a feeling she might surprise us all." "Well, color me intrigued," Billy chuckled. "But if we're talking about surprises, how about this – I think I might try my hand at the rodeo. Always wanted to see if I could tame one of them broncos." Jasper nodded, his grin widening. "Now that sounds like a plan. And you know what? I think I'll give the bucking bull a try myself." Billy let out a low whistle. "A bull? You're either braver than I thought or crazier. Maybe both." "Maybe so," Jasper agreed with a laugh. "But what's life without a little excitement, right?" With their plans set, the two made their way to the town hall to sign up for the events. The clerk behind the desk raised an eyebrow as Jasper put his name down for both the horse race and the bull riding. "You sure about this, son?" the clerk asked, eyeing Jasper skeptically. "That bull riding ain't no joke. We've had fellas carried out on stretchers." Jasper just smiled, his tone confident. "I appreciate the concern, sir, but I think I can handle it."
Billy snorted as they walked away. "Handle it, he says. Like he's talking about breaking in a new pair of boots, not riding a thousand pounds of angry beef." After signing up, they took another look at the schedule. Jasper's eye caught on two more events. "Looks like there's a pie social this afternoon, and some dances in the evening. Might be worth checking out, don't you think?" Billy's face lit up at the mention of pie. "Now you're speaking my language! Let's head over to the park and see what's cooking." The park was bustling with activity when they arrived. Tables were laden with pies of every description, and the air was sweet with the scent of sugar and fruit. They found a spot to sit and each ordered a slice. As they ate, Jasper couldn't help but notice a group of young people nearby, stealing glances in their direction. He nudged Billy. "I think we've caught some attention," he murmured. Billy looked up, a piece of apple pie halfway to his mouth. He grinned when he saw the group, particularly the young ladies who were giggling and whispering among themselves. "Well now, maybe this celebration is going to be even more interesting than we thought." Before long, a few of the braver girls approached their table. "You fellas new in town?" one of them asked, a pretty blonde with bright blue eyes. "Just rolled in yesterday," Billy replied with his most charming smile. "I'm Billy, and this here's my friend Jasper." The girls introduced themselves, and soon they were all chatting and laughing together. Jasper found himself relaxing, enjoying the easy banter and the genuine warmth of their emotions. It was a welcome change from the intensity he'd grown used to with Maria's army.
As the afternoon wore on, one of the girls, Sarah, turned to Jasper and Billy. "Say, there's a dance tonight at the Willow Creek barn. You boys should come along. It'll be a grand time!" Jasper and Billy exchanged a glance, then nodded. "We'd be delighted," Jasper said, tipping his hat to the ladies. "We'll see you there." As they walked back to their hotel to freshen up for the dance, Billy nudged Jasper. "You know, for a fella who looks like he's seen some hard times, you sure do clean up nice. Bet you'll have all the ladies swooning tonight." Jasper chuckled, but there was a hint of sadness in his eyes. "I used to love dances, back when... well, back before. It'll be nice to experience that again." Billy sensed there was more to the story, but he didn't press. Instead, he clapped Jasper on the shoulder. "Well, partner, let's make sure you have a night to remember then." The Willow Creek barn was transformed for the evening, strings of lanterns casting a warm glow over the crowd. A lively band was set up in one corner, filling the air with joyful music. Jasper and Billy barely had time to take it all in before they were swept onto the dance floor by Sarah and her friends. Jasper found himself partnered with a lively redhead named Emma. As they twirled around the floor, he was surprised to find himself genuinely enjoying the moment. The music, the laughter, the swirl of skirts and emotions – it all combined to create a heady atmosphere that made him feel almost human again. "My, Mr. Jasper," Emma said breathlessly as they finished a particularly energetic reel, "you're quite the dancer! Where did you learn to move like that?" Jasper smiled, memories of his human life flashing through his mind. "Let's just say I've had some practice," he said with a wink.
As the night wore on, Jasper and Billy danced with several of the young ladies, each seeming more charming than the last. They stayed until the very end, their dance cards full and their spirits high. Walking back to their hotel under the starry sky, Billy couldn't stop grinning. "Now that," he declared, "was a mighty fine evening. Those San Antonio gals sure know how to make a fella feel welcome." Jasper nodded in agreement. "It was... nice," he said softly. "To just be normal for a while, you know?" Billy gave him a curious look but didn't ask for an explanation. Instead, he just said, "Well, partner, I hope you're ready for tomorrow. Because if tonight was any indication, it's going to be one hell of a day."
The next morning dawned bright and clear, perfect weather for the 4th of July celebrations. Jasper and Billy made their way to the city center, leading the chestnut mare. Despite her humble origins, she looked magnificent, her coat gleaming in the sunlight. As they approached the race line, Jasper could feel the excitement building in the air. The other horses were prancing nervously, their riders looking a mix of confident and anxious. Billy gave Jasper a pat on the back as he swung into the saddle. "Show 'em what you've got, partner," Billy said with a grin. "And remember, we've got a nice chunk of change riding on this race, so no pressure or anything." Jasper laughed, feeling surprisingly at ease. As a vampire, he knew he had certain advantages, but he was determined to win this race fairly. He leaned down to pat the mare's neck. "What do you say, girl? Ready to surprise everyone?" The starting gun fired, and they were off. The chestnut mare shot forward like she'd been launched from a cannon, keeping pace with the lead horses. Jasper held her back just a bit, conserving her energy for the final stretch. As they thundered around the track, Jasper could hear the roar of the crowd, feel the pounding of hooves through the saddle. It was exhilarating in a way he hadn't experienced in years. As they approached the final turn, Jasper leaned forward, whispering encouragement to the mare. "Alright, girl. Time to show them what you can do." It was as if she understood every word. The chestnut mare surged forward, her stride lengthening as she ate up the ground. They passed one horse, then another, until they were neck and neck with the leader. In the final yards, Jasper gave her free rein, and she responded with a burst of speed that left the other horses in the dust. They crossed the finish line a full length ahead of the next horse, the crowd erupting in cheers. As Jasper brought the mare to a stop, he was immediately surrounded by well-wishers and admirers. Billy pushed his way through the crowd, his face split in a wide grin. "Hot damn, Jasper!" he whooped. "That was something else! I think you've just made us a tidy profit!" Before Jasper could respond, a couple of well-dressed gentlemen approached, their eyes fixed on the chestnut mare. "That's some horse you've got there, son," one of them said. "We'd be interested in buying her, if you're selling. Name your price." Jasper shook his head, patting the mare's neck fondly. "I'm afraid she's not for sale, gentlemen. A cowboy has to trust his horse, just like the horse needs to trust her cowboy. Chestnut here trusted me for the win, and I aim to keep that faith going." The men looked disappointed but nodded in understanding. As they led the mare back to the livery, Billy couldn't stop talking about the race.
"I swear, Jasper, I've never seen anything like it. That mare of yours, she's something special. And the way you rode her! It was like you two were reading each other's minds or something." Jasper just smiled, enjoying Billy's excitement. "She's a good horse," he said simply. "Now, what do you say we head over to the rodeo? I believe we both have some riding to do."
The rodeo grounds were packed, the air thick with dust and anticipation. Billy was up first, drawing a particularly ornery-looking bronco. As he settled into the chute, he shot Jasper a grin. "Wish me luck, partner. I've got my eye on that buckle." The chute opened, and the bronco exploded into the arena, bucking and twisting for all it was worth. Billy held on, moving with the horse in a display of skill that had the crowd cheering. When the whistle blew, signaling he'd made the full eight seconds, Billy threw his hat in the air with a whoop of triumph. As Billy made his way back, still grinning from ear to ear, it was Jasper's turn. He approached the bull chute with a calm that seemed at odds with the situation. The bull inside was massive, its eyes rolling as it snorted and pawed at the ground. "You sure about this, Jasper?" Billy asked, a note of concern in his voice. "Ain't no shame in backing out, you know." Jasper just smiled. "Don't worry, Billy. I just want the experience, not the buckle. I'll be fine." As he lowered himself onto the bull's back, Jasper knew he could easily stay on for the full eight seconds if he used his vampire abilities. But that wasn't the point. He wanted to feel the rush, the danger, the sheer human audacity of pitting oneself against such a powerful beast. The chute opened, and the world exploded into chaos. The bull lurched and spun, its muscles bunching and releasing with incredible force. Jasper held on, feeling the power beneath him, the roar of the crowd in his ears. He lasted just shy of four seconds before he was thrown clear, landing with a thud that would have broken bones if he were human. As it was, he got to his feet quickly, dusting himself off as the rodeo clowns distracted the bull.
Billy was there in an instant, concern and admiration warring on his face. "You alright, partner? That was one hell of a ride, short as it was." Jasper grinned, feeling more alive than he had in years. "Never better, Billy. Never better." As they made their way out of the arena, Billy's new buckle gleaming at his waist, Jasper felt a sense of contentment wash over him. For the first time since he'd been turned, he felt like he belonged somewhere, like he was part of something. Looking at Billy, still buzzing with excitement from his win, Jasper knew he'd made the right choice in staying. Whatever challenges lay ahead, whatever demons from his past might resurface, he had a feeling that together, they could face anything. The 4th of July celebration was winding down, but for Jasper and Billy, it felt like their adventure was just beginning.
