Sleeping in my hammock, I felt alive again. It was the first real night of sleep I had had in some time. I wasn't sure if I had ever had a better bit of sleep, but it felt like it had been forever since I had a comfortable night of rest. Sleeping on a rocking boat, and then the stone floor of a cave, was not ideal, and I couldn't remember anything before that. So, for myself, I was having the best night of sleep in my whole life.
As I got up, I looked over and found some simple fatigues that were given to me by the crew of the ship. I found the blue pants and simple Marine shirts fit rather well. As I scanned over myself, I did notice that I was skinnier then when I first looked at my own self back on the boat when I first remembered anything. I looked at my messy brown hair as my blue eyes looked over myself. I was in a better place than I was the day before. I thought about the fruit I had eaten, and as I thought about it, I remembered the name of it somehow. It came to my mind that I had eaten the Mercury fruit, or the Suigin Suigin no Mi. It was odd, but as I looked at myself, I raised my hand. I looked at it carefully as I was able to turn my hand into different things, from a hammer to a knife to a flower. It was strange having such an ability, and I wasn't sure what to think about it. I had used it the day before, but now I tried to wrap my head around this. I had no clue what to think about this power or how it exactly worked.
I headed out after putting on some shoes to find myself something to eat. I waved to the people I walked by. As I looked at them, I felt gratitude towards these people.
I looked over to find two people joining me at the table, one with pink hair and the other blonde with a butt chin. They were both Marines, looking pretty worn out, and neither seemed very threatening. I paused, turning back to my food and taking a bite. It tasted okay—some of the best stuff I had, which wasn't saying much.
"Hey, um, I am new here. Sui is the name," I commented, making up my name on the fly based on the fruit I ate. "What are your names?"
The pink-haired one smiled warmly. "I'm Koby," he said. "And this is Helmeppo," he added, gesturing to the blonde beside him.
Helmeppo nodded, looking slightly less enthusiastic but still friendly. "Nice to meet you, Sui," he said.
"It is nice to meet you as well, Helmeppo, Koby," I replied as I mentally repeated their names so I would remember who each of them were. "So, tell me about yourselves if you don't mind."
Koby leaned forward, his eyes lighting up. "Well, it's a bit of a long story. We were both taken in by Vice Admiral Garp. He's been training us to be proper Marines."
Helmeppo chuckled. "Yeah, training us pretty hard. But it's worth it. We're learning a lot."
I nodded, taking in their words. "That sounds intense. I'm still trying to figure out my place here."
Koby smiled encouragingly. "You'll find it, Sui. Just stick with it."
Helmeppo nodded in agreement. "Yeah, Garp may be tough, but he's one of the best. You'll learn a lot from him."
I felt a spark of hope at their words. Maybe this was the start of something new, something better. "Thanks, guys," I said, feeling a bit more confident. "I appreciate it."
I continued to eat, listening to Koby and Helmeppo talk about their training. They mentioned a lot of cleaning and running errands as they were still considered errand boys on the ship. Apparently, we were on our way to Marine Headquarters. I nodded, realizing that I would need to talk to Garp himself after this meal.
"Well, I am off to see the Vice Admiral. I think I might be joining you two in learning from him if he accepts me," I informed them, having eaten quickly due to my hunger.
Koby smiled. "Good luck, Sui! Vice Admiral Garp is tough, but if he sees potential in you, he'll definitely take you under his wing."
Helmeppo nodded. "Yeah, don't worry too much. Just be yourself."
I thanked the two of them as I got to my feet. I took my tray and put it away, before heading up to meet with Garp. Luckily finding him wasn't hard, but that meant it was time to talk to the person who allowed me on this ship. Of course, I felt nervous. Garp was a rather imposing person, and as strong as an ox. He was naturally a bit intimidating. I took a deep breath and approached him. I reminded myself the importance of showing confidence.
"Excuse me, Vice Admiral Garp," I said, trying to sound confident. "I wanted to thank you for letting me on your ship. I also wanted to ask if I could stay and learn from you. I know I have a lot to learn, but I'm willing to work hard."
Garp turned to face me, his massive frame and stern expression initially intimidating. But then he smiled, a wide grin spreading across his face. "You've got spirit, kid. I saw that when you climbed up onto my ship. If you're willing to work hard, then you're welcome to stay and train with us."
Relief washed over me. "Thank you, sir. I won't let you down."
Garp chuckled. "We'll see about that. Training starts early tomorrow. Be ready."
"Sir, I believe I ate something called the Suigin Suigin no Mi, and I know that I can change my body into shapes and do similar things with it. However, outside of that, I don't know how it works," I informed him, giving him a salute just like I had seen everyone else give him on the ship. "I promise to put everything I have into this training. I will not let you down and will make up for the kindness you have shown me."
Garp's eyes widened slightly, then a broad grin spread across his face. "A devil fruit, huh? You've got some interesting powers, kid. That'll make things even more fun. Just remember, it's not the fruit that makes the Marine; it's the spirit. Show me you've got what it takes, and we'll see what you're made of."
I nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "Yes, sir! Thank you, sir!"
Garp chuckled, patting me on the shoulder with enough force to nearly knock me over. "Welcome aboard, Sui. Training starts at dawn. Be ready."
I nod my head and take my leave, heading to the deck to find some space to practice movements with this devil fruit of mine. I discover that my whole body can turn into mercury. I try to throw a punch and move as best as I can. It feels weak, and I lack the impact, but the power is wild. I move with a bit more fluidity, my body momentarily turning semi-solid as it shifts into mercury and then back to solid form. I notice the two people I had been having breakfast with watching me.
"Yeah, apparently, I ate a devil fruit, something called the Suigin Suigin no Mi. My whole body can now turn into mercury. It's an odd thing to turn into, but it's pretty fun," I say, stopping my movement and turning to face the two of them.
Koby's eyes widen in amazement. "That's incredible! I've only seen one person ever use devil fruits before. His devil fruit was way different looking then your is. How does it feel?"
Helmeppo smirks, crossing his arms. "It's definitely unique. Just don't let it go to your head. Logia Devil fruit powers are super rare, but they come with their own challenges."
I nod, appreciating their reactions. "Yeah, I'm still figuring it out. It's a bit weird, but I'm determined to make the most of it."
Koby smiles encouragingly. "You'll get the hang of it. Just keep practicing. We're all in this together."
Helmeppo nods in agreement. "Yeah, and who knows? Maybe we'll learn a thing or two from each other."
"Kid don't jump in the water, you will sink like a rock, as do all devil fruit users," a man with a sword at his side commented, looking over at me. "You have a Logia, one of the rarest types of devil fruits. You best get control over it," he informed me, watching me carefully. I don't know this, but this man is Garp's right-hand man, Bogart.
"Yes, sir," I replied with a nod and a salute. I didn't know about the water thing, but now I'm glad I didn't try to jump in that morning for a swim. The Logia thing I'll have to figure out as well.
Bogart nodded approvingly. "Good. Keep at it. Mastery over your powers will be crucial. And remember, always stay vigilant."
"Thank you for the advice, sir," I said, feeling a mix of gratitude and determination. With that, I resumed my practice, more aware of the challenges and potential of my new abilities.
"Let's work together," Koby said as Helmeppo and I prepared ourselves. We all worked together. I helped them with tasks and spent the rest of the day working to figure out my own power and wrap my mind around it as well. It was a fun day, as I got to know these two better. I found that they were pretty good people. It sure beat being alone and isolated from the rest of the world.
I learned about Helmeppo's issues with his father and about how Koby ended up as a Marine in the first place. I told them about my own experience, about how I woke up without any memory of who I am, rowed for a few days, ended up on the island, and then wandered across the island until I ran into their ship.
"So that is what brings me to now. I never thought I would be on a Marine ship, but I must admit I am rather excited for this adventure. And I promise, if you two need help, I will do my best to help out," I explained, holding a mop in one hand as I looked at the other two.
Helmeppo smirked, twirling his mop. "Well, just don't get us into trouble, newbie."
Koby smiled warmly. "We're glad to have you with us, Sui. Let's make the most of this journey together."
"I won't, I will pull my own weight," I replied with a nod as I walked with them to get the meal for dinner. It was a simple meal of rice curry. Spicy stuff that was so very spicy and so very good to me. I smiled as I ate. "This stuff has just enough heat, don't you two agree?"
Koby nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, it's got a real kick to it! Perfect after a long day."
Helmeppo chuckled, wiping a bit of sweat from his brow. "It's definitely spicy, but I like it. Keeps things interesting."
I nodded as I smiled and then took some more bites of the curry, thinking about the future. "I can't wait to get to Headquarters. I think that we should have even harder work there to get us into shape," I reasoned, taking another bite a moment later. "The more chances to grow stronger, the better. It means we can get really strong and work to help others. I will make sure personally that I can pay back all the kindness that has been shown to me."
Koby smiled warmly. "I'm sure you will, Sui. We'll all get stronger together and make a difference."
Helmeppo nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we'll become a great team. Just wait and see."
I finished up and nodded my head, "Yeah, I look forward to whatever happens," I commented, taking my tray and heading back to the room I was given as a guest. Tomorrow, I would leave this room and join the rest of the crew, sleeping in the crew quarters. I found more items I would need from the next day onward, including the essentials for being a Marine.
I lay down to rest, savoring the last night in the guest room to ensure I got a good night's sleep. I knew peace and quiet would be rare in the future. As I settled in, I felt a sense of purpose and a goal: to get stronger and to help these people who had helped me out.
A/N- Thanks for the catch that helped
