The next morning, as the castle awoke to the sounds of students bustling through the corridors, Hermione set off to meet with Professors McGonagall and Dumbledore to discuss her ambitious course load. Meanwhile, Harry, Ron, and Jean made their way from the Gryffindor Common Room to the Great Hall for breakfast.
"So, which new subjects have you chosen this year?" Harry asked, glancing at Ron as they descended the stairs.
Ron shrugged, adjusting his bag over his shoulder. "I went for Divination and Care of Magical Creatures. Figured they'd be interesting and, well, not too difficult."
Jean, walking beside them, looked curious. "What about you, Harry?"
"I'm taking Care of Magical Creatures too," Harry replied. "And I thought about taking Divination, but I wasn't sure, so I took Ancient Runes and Arithmancy instead. How about you, Jean? Any classes you're looking forward to?"
Jean smiled, glancing around at the bustling students. "I'm really excited about Potions and Transfiguration. I've always had a knack for Chemistry and Physics, so I think those classes will be fascinating. And I'm definitely looking forward to Defense Against the Dark Arts. Professor Lupin seems like he knows his stuff."
Harry nodded, matching Jean's enthusiasm. "Yeah, I'm looking forward to Defense Against the Dark Arts too. Professor Lupin is brilliant. And Potions can be really interesting, even if Snape isn't exactly welcoming." He grinned, adding, "Transfiguration with McGonagall is always impressive. She's a tough teacher, but you learn so much."
—
As they continued walking towards the Great Hall for the Welcoming Feast, Wood's mind was still on Quidditch. "By the way, Harry, do you have any suggestions for those substitute players? We need people who can step in and keep up with the team."
Harry thought for a moment. "Well, I know Ginny Weasley is really good on a broomstick. She might be a great addition as a Chaser. And maybe we can keep an eye on some of the first and second years during flying lessons to spot any potential talent."
He then added, "Also, Jean played football during her time schooling in America. She's really athletic. I'd have to teach her flying on a broomstick, but I'm sure she'll catch on quickly."
Katie Bell chimed in enthusiastically, "Ginny would be perfect! I've seen her fly, and she's got great control and speed."
Alicia Spinnet nodded. "And Jean sounds promising. Athleticism and teamwork from football will definitely help."
Angelina Johnson added, "We should also look at some of the younger students. It's never too early to start grooming the next generation of players."
Fred and George exchanged mischievous grins. "We could use some more pranksters on the team," Fred said.
George agreed. "We might find some talent among the younger troublemakers."
Wood looked thoughtful, then nodded. "Alright, let's keep our eyes open. If we spot anyone with potential, we'll give them a shot. And Harry, if you can get Jean up to speed on a broomstick, we might have a new secret weapon."
With that, the team was abuzz with excitement and ideas, ready to take on the new season with renewed energy and a plan to ensure they were stronger than ever.

As the Gryffindor table buzzed with chatter, Ron was busy shoveling scrambled eggs into his mouth. Just then, Hermione returned from her early morning meeting with a thoughtful expression.
Ron, barely pausing to swallow his food, blurted out, "What happened at the meeting?" Bits of toast crumbs flew from his mouth as he spoke.
Hermione gave him a disapproving look, but couldn't help smiling a bit. "Ron, could you at least try to chew with your mouth closed?" she said, sitting down and pouring herself a glass of pumpkin juice.
"Anyway, the meeting was quite interesting," Hermione continued after taking a sip of pumpkin juice. She glanced at Harry, Jean, and Ron, who were all eagerly waiting to hear more.
"I've decided to take on all of the optional subjects this year," Hermione announced proudly, her eyes shining with determination.
Harry raised an eyebrow. "All of them? That's quite a load, Hermione. Which ones exactly?"
Hermione listed them off, ticking them off on her fingers. "Ancient Runes, Arithmancy, Muggle Studies, and even Divination."
Ron nearly choked on his eggs at the mention of Divination. "You're taking Divination? But I thought you said it was a load of rubbish!"
Hermione shrugged. "It might be, but I want to broaden my knowledge. And who knows? Maybe there's something to it after all."
Jean, who had been quietly listening, smiled encouragingly. "That's impressive, Hermione. It sounds like you'll be very busy."
Hermione nodded, a determined look on her face. "Yes, but I'm up for the challenge. I want to be as prepared as possible for whatever lies ahead."
Harry, curious about Hermione's decision, raised an eyebrow and asked, "Hermione, why did you decide to take Muggle Studies? I mean, you're already pretty knowledgeable about the Muggle world, being Muggleborn and all."
Hermione paused, considering her answer thoughtfully. "You're right, Harry. I do have a good understanding of Muggle life, but I want to delve deeper into it from a wizarding perspective. There are aspects of Muggle society and technology that I haven't fully explored, and I think it's important for me to understand both worlds as comprehensively as possible."
Ron, now intrigued, chimed in with a grin. "Does that mean you'll finally be able to explain to us how those 'lectric' things work?"
Hermione chuckled softly at Ron's mispronunciation but nodded nonetheless. "Yes, Ron, I suppose I could give it a try. Understanding Muggle technology like 'lectricity' could be quite useful."
Harry joined in with a teasing smile. "I think it's 'electricity,' Ron."
Ron shrugged, undeterred. "Yeah, whatever it's called. Just make sure to explain it in terms we can understand, Hermione."
Hermione rolled her eyes playfully. "Of course, Ron. I'll do my best."
Harry, intrigued by Hermione's ambitious schedule, furrowed his brow slightly and asked, "But Hermione, how are you planning to attend so many classes? Aren't some of them bound to be at the same time?"
Hermione nodded thoughtfully, taking a moment to consider Harry's concern. "You're right, Harry. It's going to require some careful planning. I've already spoken to Professor McGonagall about it, and she's assured me that they'll do their best to accommodate scheduling conflicts."
Harry, feeling a sense of suspicion about Hermione's ability to manage her schedule so seamlessly, extended his psionic senses. He detected the faint psionic signature of a magical artifact around Hermione's neck. Concerned, he decided to communicate telepathically, ensuring only Jean could hear his message.
Jean, ask Hermione what's around her neck? I sense a magical artifact. Is everything alright?
Jean, who was sitting next to Hermione, glanced over with a slight furrow in her brow, sensing Harry's urgency through their shared psionic connection. She discreetly leaned towards Hermione and whispered, "Hermione, Harry's asking what's around your neck. Is there something you're not telling us?"
Hermione blinked in surprise, momentarily caught off guard by Harry's unexpected inquiry. She reached up and touched the pendant hanging around her neck, a small hourglass-shaped charm that shimmered faintly with magical energy.
"It's a Time-Turner," Hermione replied quietly, realizing Harry must have sensed its presence. "I... I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Professor McGonagall lent it to me again to help manage my class schedule."
Jean, intrigued by Hermione's mention of a Time-Turner, leaned in a bit closer and asked in a hushed tone, "What's a Time-Turner?"
Hermione hesitated for a moment, considering how best to explain. "Well, it's a magical device that allows the wearer to travel back in time. This particular one, given to me by Professor McGonagall, lets me go back a few hours to attend additional classes without missing my regular ones."
Jean's eyes widened with fascination. "That sounds incredible! But isn't that... really dangerous? I mean, messing with time and all?"
Hermione nodded solemnly. "It can be, which is why they're heavily regulated. I have to be very careful when I use it, following strict rules to avoid creating paradoxes or changing too much."
Harry, who had been using his enhanced hearing to listen in, added quietly, "Hermione, just make sure you're not overdoing it with the Time-Turner. We don't want any accidents."
Hermione nodded slightly in acknowledgment, grateful for Harry's concern. "I know, Harry. I'll be careful, I promise."
Harry, intrigued by the Time-Turner and wanting to understand more about its workings, leaned forward slightly and asked Hermione, "Hey, Hermione, do you think I could take a look at the Time-Turner later? I'm really curious about how it works."
Hermione hesitated for a moment, considering Harry's request. She knew the Time-Turner was a delicate magical artifact with strict usage guidelines, but she also trusted Harry and knew he was genuinely interested.
"I... I'm not sure, Harry," Hermione replied cautiously. "Professor McGonagall entrusted it to me, and I need to be responsible for its use. Let me think about it, okay?"
Harry nodded understandingly. "Sure, Hermione. I get it. Just let me know if you change your mind."
Jean, who had been quietly listening, chimed in with a reassuring smile. "I'm sure Hermione will let you see it, Harry. It's just a matter of finding the right time."
Hermione nodded gratefully at Jean, feeling torn between her responsibility to safeguard the Time-Turner and her friends' curiosity. As they continued their conversation, the Time-Turner remained a topic of both intrigue and caution, a reminder of the complexities and responsibilities that came with possessing powerful magical artifacts at Hogwarts.
—
As Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Jean finished their breakfast, the Great Hall began to bustle with the activity of students preparing for the day ahead. Professor McGonagall made her way down the aisles, handing out timetables to each student.
"Here you go," she said, handing a stack of timetables to Hermione, who distributed them to Harry, Ron, and Jean.
Harry glanced over his timetable and smiled. "Looks like we have Ancient Runes first."
"Great," Jean replied, her excitement evident. "I've been looking forward to that class."
Hermione nodded, already scanning the details of her timetable. "Me too. It'll be fascinating."
Ron, on the other hand, grimaced as he looked at his schedule. "Divination first thing in the morning," he grumbled. "Why did I sign up for this again?"
Harry chuckled. "Cheer up, Ron. Maybe you'll see something interesting in the tea leaves."
Ron rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress a small smile. "Yeah, right."
As they gathered their belongings, Susan Bones and Hannah Abbott from the Hufflepuff table approached, smiling warmly. "Mind if we join you on the way to Ancient Runes?" Susan asked.
"Of course not," Hermione replied, pleased to have more company. "The more, the merrier."
With their books and schedules in hand, the group made their way out of the Great Hall and headed toward the classroom for Ancient Runes. The corridors of Hogwarts were filled with the usual morning hustle and bustle, students chatting and hurrying to their first classes of the day.
Ron waved them off as he headed in the direction of the North Tower for Divination. "Good luck with Ancient Runes," he called over his shoulder. "I'll try not to fall asleep in Trelawney's class."
"Good luck, Ron!" Harry called back, waving.
As they walked, Hermione engaged Susan and Hannah in a discussion about the upcoming lesson. "I'm really curious about Professor Babbling's introductory lecture," she said.
"Me too," Susan agreed. "I heard we're going to start working with some really complex runic alphabets."
As they continued walking, Harry glanced at Hermione and Hannah, a thoughtful expression on his face. "By the way, Hermione, Hannah, there's something I've been meaning to talk to you about. Jean, Susan, and I have been considering a personal project. We want to create a trinket to help our friend Rogue."
Hannah looked intrigued. "Rogue? I don't think I know her."
"She's a friend from Xavier's Institute," Jean explained. "Rogue has a mutation that doesn't allow her to touch anyone without draining their powers and abilities. Unlike Harry, who has complete control over his abilities, Rogue can't control it at all. It can even drain a person's life force if she's not careful."
Hermione's eyes widened in concern. "That sounds terrible. How do you plan to help her?"
"We've been thinking about using runes," Susan chimed in. "We want to create a magical trinket that can help her control her powers, maybe even suppress them when needed."
Harry nodded. "We were hoping you might have some ideas, Hermione. You're great with Ancient Runes, and your knowledge could really help us figure out the best way to approach this."
Hermione's expression turned thoughtful. "That sounds like a very challenging but worthwhile project. I'd be happy to help. We'll need to research runes that can bind or regulate her mutant powers. It won't be easy, but with enough effort, I'm sure we can come up with something."
Hannah smiled warmly. "I'd love to help too. It sounds like an amazing project, and it would be wonderful to do something that could really make a difference for your friend."
Harry felt a surge of gratitude for his friends' willingness to help. "Thanks, everyone. This means a lot. Rogue has been struggling with this for a long time, and if we can find a way to help her, it would make such a difference in her life."
As they arrived at the Ancient Runes classroom, the group felt a renewed sense of purpose. The prospect of their new project added an extra layer of excitement to their studies, and they were eager to dive into the fascinating world of runes, not just for their classes, but also to help a friend in need.
—-
As Harry, Hermione, Jean, Susan, and Hannah entered the Ancient Runes classroom, they noticed several other students already seated, including Daphne Greengrass, Tracey Davis, Padma Patil, Terry Boot, and Blaise Zabini. The room was filled with neatly arranged desks, each equipped with parchment, quills, and a set of rune stones.
Professor Babbling, a petite witch with sharp eyes and an air of quiet intensity, stood at the front of the room. "Welcome, third years," she began, her voice calm but commanding. "This year, we will delve deeper into the complexities of runic magic. Ancient Runes is not just about translation; it is about understanding the very essence of magical writing and its applications."
Hermione, already eager, had her quill poised and ready. Harry glanced around and saw the same excitement mirrored on the faces of Jean, Susan, and Hannah, as well as the other students. Even the typically aloof Daphne Greengrass and Blaise Zabini appeared interested.
"Today, we will start with a brief overview of the Elder Futhark runic alphabet," Professor Babbling continued. "Each rune not only represents a letter but also carries its own magical significance and power."
With a wave of her wand, a series of ancient runes appeared on the blackboard. "For instance, the rune Fehu represents wealth and abundance, while Uruz stands for strength and vitality. Understanding these meanings is crucial for using runes effectively in spellwork and enchantments."
As the lesson progressed, Professor Babbling explained the history and origins of the runes, emphasizing their cultural significance in ancient magical societies. The students took diligent notes, occasionally exchanging excited glances as they absorbed the fascinating information.
After the lecture, Professor Babbling handed out small pouches containing rune stones to each student. "For your first practical exercise, I want you to familiarize yourselves with these rune stones. Practice drawing them and meditate on their meanings. This will form the foundation of your studies this year."
Harry, Jean, and Susan exchanged knowing looks. This foundational knowledge was exactly what they needed for their project to help Rogue. Hermione, ever the diligent student, was already meticulously copying each rune onto her parchment, her mind likely buzzing with ideas.
As they worked, Harry leaned over to Hermione. "Do you think these runes could help us with Rogue's trinket?"
Hermione looked thoughtful. "It's possible. We'll need to research runes that specifically deal with control and regulation. Maybe runes like Isa, which represents stasis and control, could be useful."
Jean nodded, her eyes sparkling with determination. "This is going to be challenging, but I think we can do it."
Susan added, "And with all of us working together, we'll have a better chance of finding the right combination of runes."
Nearby, Daphne Greengrass and Tracey Davis were quietly discussing their own interpretations of the runes, while Padma Patil and Terry Boot were engaged in a detailed debate about the potential uses of runes in modern magic. Blaise Zabini, sitting with an air of detached interest, was nonetheless carefully drawing each rune with precision.
The rest of the class passed quickly as the students practiced drawing their runes and contemplating their meanings. Professor Babbling moved among them, offering guidance and answering questions. By the end of the lesson, they felt both overwhelmed and exhilarated by the potential of runic magic.
As they packed up their things, Professor Babbling made one final announcement. "For your homework, I want you to choose one rune and write a short essay on its historical significance and magical properties. This will help you deepen your understanding and prepare you for more advanced work."
The students filed out of the classroom, buzzing with conversation about the day's lesson. Harry, Hermione, Jean, Susan, and Hannah walked together, their minds already racing with ideas for their project and the exciting year of learning ahead.
"Ancient Runes is going to be amazing," Hermione said, her eyes shining with enthusiasm.
Harry nodded. "And who knows? We might just find the key to helping Rogue."
With a shared sense of purpose and excitement, they headed to their next class, ready to tackle whatever challenges and discoveries lay ahead.
—
As the group of Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs left the Ancient Runes classroom, Harry's enhanced hearing picked up a conversation behind him. He glanced back and saw Tracey Davis speaking earnestly to Daphne Greengrass.
"Daphne, you really should talk to Professor Snape about the problems you've been having. He's your Head of House; he can help," Tracey urged.
Daphne hesitated, looking uncomfortable. "I don't know, Tracey. It's... complicated."
Harry, his curiosity piqued, slowed his pace to listen more closely. Jean, noticing Harry's distraction, nudged him gently. "What's up?"
Harry whispered back, "I think something's going on with Daphne Greengrass. Let's wait a moment."
As they lingered near the corridor, Harry listened intently.
"Complicated how?" Tracey asked, concern evident in her voice. "You've been acting strange lately, and I'm worried about you."
Daphne sighed. "I've been feeling... different. It's like there's this energy inside me that I can't control. Strange things have been happening around me."
Harry's mind raced. Energy she can't control, strange things happening... It sounded all too familiar. He shared a quick glance with Jean and Susan, who had also paused, sensing Harry's unease.
Without thinking, Harry approached Daphne and Tracey. "Hey, Daphne, Tracey," he began gently. "I couldn't help but overhear. Daphne, can we talk for a moment?"
Daphne looked surprised but nodded. "Sure, Potter."
Jean and Susan joined them, offering reassuring smiles. Hermione and Hannah exchanged curious looks but stayed back, respecting the sudden seriousness of the situation.
Harry led Daphne a few steps away from the main group. "Daphne, I know what you're going through," he said softly. "I think your X-gene has awakened."
Daphne's eyes widened. "X-gene? What are you talking about?"
Harry glanced around to make sure no one else was listening. "The X-gene is what gives some people special abilities. It's like a mutation, but magical. Jean, Susan, and I have it too. You're not alone."
Jean stepped forward, her expression compassionate. "It's true, Daphne. When my powers first manifested, I was scared too. But you don't have to face this alone."
Daphne looked between them, a mix of relief and confusion in her eyes. "I... I don't know what to say. This has been happening for a few weeks now, and I didn't know who to talk to."
Susan smiled warmly. "We're here to help. We'll figure this out together."
Tracey, who had been listening quietly, looked at Daphne with renewed understanding. "Whatever it is, Daph, we're with you. We'll get through this."
Harry nodded. "Let's talk more after classes. We can meet somewhere private and discuss what to do next."
Daphne took a deep breath, visibly relieved. "Thank you, Harry. Thank you, all of you."
As they rejoined the others, Harry felt a surge of determination. Helping Rogue was important, but so was supporting Daphne. Together, they would navigate the challenges of their unique abilities, and ensure no one had to face them alone.
With a newfound sense of solidarity, they headed to their next class, ready to tackle whatever challenges and discoveries lay ahead.

Meanwhile, as Ron and the rest of the third years, including Hermione—who had used the Time-Turner to attend the Divination class—exited their first Divination class, the air was filled with a mixture of confusion and skepticism. Professor Trelawney, with her usual dramatic flair, had made a vague and cryptic prediction that left the class buzzing with speculation.
Ron walked alongside Hermione, Neville, Dean, and Seamus, shaking his head. "Can you believe Trelawney? She said something big was going to happen to you, Neville. Something about a great change."
Neville looked worried, his brow furrowed. "I don't know what she meant. I mean, what kind of great change?"
Dean shrugged, a skeptical grin on his face. "Maybe she thinks you're going to win the House Cup single-handedly."
Seamus laughed. "Or maybe she thinks you're going to become a famous wizard overnight."
Neville didn't look reassured. "What if it's something bad? She kept saying 'a great power within you will awaken.' What if I hurt someone?"
Hermione, always the voice of reason, added, "Divination is known for being vague, Neville. It's hard to know what she really means. But if something does start happening, you'll have us to help you."
Ron patted Neville on the back, trying to be supportive despite his own doubts about Divination. "Yeah, mate. We're all here for you. And you know, I've heard Trelawney's predictions are usually nonsense."
As they walked through the corridors, they bumped into Harry, Jean, Susan, and Hannah, who were heading to their next class. Seeing the worried look on Neville's face, Harry asked, "What's wrong, Neville?"
Ron sighed. "Trelawney made one of her predictions. She said Neville's going to have some kind of big change, like a great power within him awakening."
Harry and Jean exchanged a knowing glance. "That sounds familiar," Jean murmured.
Harry stepped closer to Neville, his expression serious. "Neville, do you remember what else she said? Any details?"
Neville tried to recall. "She said something about a great power within me and that I should be prepared for a significant change. She was really vague, though."
Harry nodded thoughtfully. "Neville, there's something you should know. Jean, Susan, and I have abilities that are different from regular magic. It's because of something called the X-gene. It sounds like Trelawney might be predicting that yours is about to awaken."
Neville's eyes widened. "X-gene? What does that mean?"
"It means you might have a unique magical ability," Jean explained gently. "It can be a lot to handle at first, but you're not alone. We'll help you."
Hermione, always practical, added, "We should keep an eye on things, Neville. If anything unusual starts happening, tell us right away."
Ron, still skeptical but wanting to support his friend, said, "Yeah, Neville. We're here for you. And who knows? Maybe it's something really cool."
Neville managed a small, uncertain smile. "Thanks, everyone. I guess we'll just have to wait and see."
With that, the group headed off to their next class, the weight of Trelawney's prediction lingering in the air. Harry, Jean, and Susan made a mental note to stay close to Neville, ready to help if his X-gene did indeed awaken.
As the day continued, they couldn't shake the feeling that their third year at Hogwarts was going to be full of unexpected twists and turns. But with friends by their side and a shared determination to face whatever came their way, they felt ready to handle whatever the future held.
